Discing - John Deere 4640 & 630 Disc

- Discing helps break down the larger clods of dirt created by chisel plowing. You can also use a disc to knock down corn stalks. In this video, we bring back out our new John Deere 4640 and our 630 disc. Enjoy!

Ryan, pulling a disc was always my favorite thing to do. It changed the way the ground looked, was pretty fast and had to be done. Thanks for posting!
We bought a brand new 4640 in 1980. It had quad range. We used it about 10 years. Never had a problem with it. Definitely one of the best tractors ever made. Also around that time we sold our 7520 and bought an 8640 and what a beast that was. I miss those days farming with my dad.
The 4640 is probably one of my most favorite tractors. My grandfather had one
Drove this machine at 13 yrs old, to me one of the best jd's ever made in my opinion.
William Ellis I think the DJ 4440 and 4640 are the same either than size I was cultivating last and the tractor was working so hard the manifold was red 😮😮😮😮😮😬😬😬😬😬
@@thecadester9286 that isn’t good for the motor I’ve seen people cause a lot of damage running one that got to hot I even seen one once that the turbo got so hot it caught of fire
The memories
I had that same tractor, just a little bit smaller plow custom made. I miss my childhood helping my dad.
Jeez that 4640 sounds good!
"Oh my god, the bovidity". Lol, nearly shot water out of my nose.
4640, the good ole days.. Those were tough old tractors..
How Farm Works, thank you for showing us many things!👍
in my day, we tied , 4 sheep dogs together, and still got done, in time for the paul Harvey radio show, why I need a tractor.
Thanks for letting me eride with u. Use to farm my self ! Good memory's
Your channal has lots of info about farming and is helping me alot
Listen to that tractor purr
thanks for the videos I actually filled out a job application at this place in Florida but as I worked around tractors my whole life I never worked with tractors in this way I used them in hay mowing fluffing raking and baling I hope they give me a chance
Can't beat that 4640, great video.
Love those soundguard cab tractors, especially with a quad-range
Du machst richtig schöne Videos. Schöner Sound. Der John Deere 4640 ist mit der 630 Scheibenegge ein perfektes Gespann für die Bodenbearbeitung nach der Getreideernte bzw. Maisernte.
love them old iron horses
Can't beat 44-46-or 4840s love the video 👍
It did a nice job discing that up
I love the older model John Deere tractors, they are built tougher, last longer, and are a lot simpler to use( technology wise ), I'm subscribed to a farmer that recently rebuilt his 4960 John Deere tractor from the ground up after it caught on fire a couple of years ago, but I never realized how freaking expensive parts for John Deere tractors are, sometimes I wonder if your paying for the brand.
I really liked this!
Awesome video, thanks! I wish I were out in the fields.

What we like to do on our farm is to plow it under first disk then seed
What about Stewart's Wilt? In eastern Pennsylvania the field corn has it but has not reduced yields, but the sweet corn gets wiped out.
Hmmm... I was told years ago that you don't ever want to run those folding disks with the wings up-- it'll tear up the center section. Course that may be on older, lighter built folding disks-- that Deere disk looks pretty tough and seemed to handle it just fine!
Yall don't use a crumbler or "rolling basket"?? I run one behind the 23 foot disk on my BIL's farm in northern Indiana and it does a GREAT job at finishing the field and firming it up slightly for planting... crushes all the clods and breaks them up and breaks up the rootballs and stuff and kinda puts the fluffy loose soil and residue on top, while firming the ground up a little underneath so the planter doesn't run so deep into the ground...
Works great! OL J R :)
working crp is something else when we got a new 200 acre piece we had to use a wishekt disc to break it up then run a regular disk over to level it
Also, looks like new disc blades are needed soon?
Hi HFW,
Love the way you present everything thank you.
With regard to the extra weight on the discs I was wondering whether you could make a steel box to fit flat on the back in the part that doesn’t fold, and use one or more front Tractor weight to allow you to use the full width of discs and so save a pass on the tractor? I am thinking the extra weight would push all the discs down equally?
thanks
Do you grow different crops in the same fields?
Notice that your corn from the year prior was just around the field!!!
When you have lots of land, this could be an option!!
Thanks 4 Sharing!!
The worm you mention, is that the same as cut worm?
Would you spray this before discing?
Do you do much notilling? Here in Pa. I would roundup in the fall and have a beautiful seedbed for corn in the spring.
Ryan, perhaps you can tell us the theory behind the smaller strips of crops? Is there a rotational issue, soil issue,or traditional issue a work here?
there are other videosor websites on why its like that, just sugesting you look it up.
Seems like you mainly chisel plow now though? Is there a reason you chisel plow instead of disc? Beginner asking.
The Disc would traditionally follow the chisel plow. We now use the VT for any passes that we don't hit with the chisel plow. Either way the chiseled ground gets worked down.
I watch all you videos and enjoy them, you had one on the 630 Disc, how wide is yours? What it spacing ?
I’m looking at an 18’ 630 with 7.5” spacing and trying to figure out how much Pto or drawbar HP is needed
Thank you
u should do some start up vids
What gear are you in? When we disc with a 4430 or 4630 we go in C1 or C2 our disc is a 220
Will you make another planting video?
Ryan what’s the main and most important difference in disc (harrowing) and plowing? Aren’t they practically the same thing?
+Ryan Parish Plowint goes much deeper. Disking just mixes the top few inches of soil.
How Farms Work ah. Thanks.
What's the difference between discing and plowing, besides the obvious. Is it just a preferance thing or are there different functionalities to the two?
+Mason Jenkins Discing makes the ground soft like a pillow and only mixes the top few inches. Plowing gets deeper and is to break up compaction.
here in denmark where i live discing is not verry common ( i have never seen one in action ) but i would say that 70% of the farmers plow about every other year at least where i live
ps your videos are verry addicting keep up the good work :)
How many acres do you have?
wow thank god for no till. this is a lot of work
We called it double cut or triple cutting a field
ikr thats a nice tractor! but... are 4430 with a 6 shovel plow went in mudy water chizel plowed all way down an the 4430 does not have a pally brake or the lever and you need more traction? 4640 are bigger than 4430's i don't care thats a very nice tractor sounds great how low are you going with the disk?
How wide is that disc
Did the 4440 pull the disk good . Our 4440 struggles with the 18 foot disk
This disk behind the 4440 would actually lift the front tires off the ground, even with the 4640 it was a bit of a pull. This disk is the big reason why we got that 8R last fall.
Travman035 how wide is the disk? we pulled a 20 footer with a 4430 no FWD but it had duals
25 Feet,
ah
***** the Disk is harder to pull than a soil finisher or field cultivator.
that disk is work for that wee little tractor 0_0
Wat gear was u running in
Sometimes your terminology throws me - stakes for fence post.
U know you can cut the corn stalks down an it will be a lot easier for the disk
Why don't farmers use mold boards anymore?
how wide is that disc?
good1
why does it have to gear shifters
Oh ok. Thanks for the reply
Are you in Iowa?
+Mike Young Potosi Wisconson
imdafarmer gamerboy
OK thanks.
Should straight pipe that 4640
Get some cat challengers my farm is cat lexion, challenger get some of them
