    The video is really good. You guys are becoming quite the producers. I would like to have seen more of inside the cab and a review of all the monitors you are watching. I still use a modified drill for beans and a 694 JD planter for corn.

    If your done for the year doesn't matter but for next year- May-Wes finger closing wheels and drag chains behind them make that seed trench close even around corners

    No till to me means having mulch/manure in a layer on to of the ground and only planting in that top zone. Looks like you have a thin layer on top and are actually cutting into the ground a little bit.

    Most corn planter that I have seen have a box for fertilizer, corn seed, and insecticide for corn root worms. Looks like your planter is set up like that but not too familiar with that planter. That way you can fertilize, plant and put on insecticide with one pass.

    Looks like your tongue needs adjusting on your planter... the units are supposed to run level across the top of the row unit side panels that support the hoppers, and yours are nosed down quite a bit at the top when the planter is down in the ground. Course I guess if it's working right, then why bother-- leveling the planter will require readjusting the trash whipper operating height and the closing wheel down pressure, as once the planter is leveled it will raise the trash whippers up in front and push down more on the closing wheels in back.
    We always leveled out planter first thing when setting up to plant... Course we were running a Deere 7100 on the 3 point hitch, so lenthening or shortening the turnbuckle at the top was all that was required to level it; pull-type planters are leveled at the tongue hitch height adjustment.
    Might not matter so much with vacuum meters, but I read in the book that other style meters might not work as well if the planter isn't level...

    Really nice vids you make. I myself grew up in the countryside of Sweden and have always had a big interest in farming and all what was going on on the fields where I lived. Unfortunately I myself isn't a son of a farmer but I can feel I have it in my blood. I am very grateful to all vids about farming and especially those you make because they're very well made. I look through the different vids you have made this far over and over again. Also I think it's interesting to see how the american countryside looks like. Now a question; when do you start off the season with planting? In Sweden where I live the farmers usually start up in late april and goes on until late september.

      @TheRestOfTheStory 9 років тому

      eraaspr1 The planting season is similar here. We start whenever the ground is dry enough in April with oats, then corn and soybeans. We don't plant anything else but in the fall through September and October cover crops and winter wheat will get planted.

    It doesn't look like you use GPS to plant with? I also wondered if you weight your marker arms on the planter? Here we either have to weight them or use a heavier blade with serrations.

    Is this corn going to be harvested for grain or sileage?
    Have y'all consider getting your own pull type or 3 point sprayer? Seems like you have the manpower to spray your own ground. We grow lots of cotton here and having your own spray rig is a must. You can cover a lot of ground with a tractor mounted tank and 3 point tank and 60' booms on a 7610.

      Thomas Rouse Two crops almost demand that you have some kind of sprayer...Cotton and Peanuts My son and I sprayed our peanuts 5 or six times last year.. Matter of fact if you want to see a tractor that is not afraid of wet ground.. Type in on You Tube; J D 2955 spraying peanuts

      Thomas Rouse We have a sprayer that needs a pump on it, I've been thinking about pulling it out and fixing it up.

    Explain the contents of the hoppers on the plant rig for me. I know that one of course has the seeds but what are the contents of the other two and the other six? Some time ago I would have guessed one contained Temik but I think it has been banned. My other guess for the individual hoppers is Myemik which was introduced to replace Temik. Do you use seed talc? When I was on the JD tractor 12 row plant rig the other day when the peanut seeds were being loaded seed talc was spread over the top of each bag and then talc was applied on the top of the seeds when the hopper was filled.

      jbmbanter We always put graphite in with the seed. The front two bins are for fertilizer, the middle bins that are on each row is for the seed. The bins in the way back are for insecticides such as Lorsban.

      jbmbanter Damn somebody out there knows the drill when it comes to Peanuts.. we have hopper extensions also and 300 lbs of seed will cover 6 acres. we put liquid inoculant in the fertilizer tanks with a tube in the seed trench and dry inoculant in the insecticide hoppers. The front tank on the 8950 has the prowl and valor spraying behind the rig .Planter is behind a unverferth strip till rig with tremble guidance

      You guys have answered a lot of my questions and I appreciate it. I looked at the 12 row planter since I posted and it is incredible how many wheels that it has whether it be cogs, gauge wheels, press wheels and even the wheels that support the planter as it goes down the row. I bet the land I watched being planted was planted by my Uncle years ago with a two cylinder John Deere tractor with a two row planter. I also watched a pivot irrigation system run over corn for the two days I was at my campsite in the country. It had finally gone 360 degrees during my 2 day trip. It's really dry here in East Central Georgia now.

    How do you decide which field to chisel plow and which to no-till?

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  9 років тому

      bigtractorpower Normally we'd chisel ground that was in corn the previous year and no-till current year corn into what had been bean ground.

      Interesting... when my BIL in Indiana had a no-till coulter cart/drill, my job was no-tilling beans into corn stubble with the drill. We disked up all the corn stubble and sometimes chisel plowed it beforehand, but the corn was always planted into disked ground.
      Since he traded off the no-till coulter cart/drill combo and bought a 1760 Deere 12/23 row 15 inch planter for beans, we're pretty much chiseling and disking everything before planting. Corn goes in with the nephew's 7200 Deere 16 row planter.

    Do you have sensors inside the cab that let you know when the seed hoppers are getting empty? How often do you need to refill them? Neat video, thank you.

    • @HowFarmsWork
      @HowFarmsWork  9 років тому

      Larry342516 The monitor will let you know if you are running out of seed because your population will immediately decrease. We don't ever run them that low since we got out and refilled them every 30 acres or so.
