This film is cold war propaganda level film, nothing make sense in this film...
You dont understand the decisions of characters in this film exactly because they try to demonize the russians...Cause you know all russians are bad and they do evil things because they are Russians they dont need motivation at all...
Not to mention that for some reason they show USA in modern time but Russia apperes to be stuck somewhere in the 1970-1980 this just shows that the people who are making the movies have no idea about Russia what so ever....

@@BackFromSpace and the hero of the story is an UDSSR spy - so what? Beside, they neither glorify the US nor horrify the UDSSR. They just show how horrible it is to work as a spy. Regardles where you're from.
So hold your horses cowboy - not everything is pro XY or contra YX just because some protagonist is from a certain country.
Neither is a movie where nazi germany do horrible things propaganda... or those about corrupt FBI or CIA agents. They are storys in a movie. a plot thats unfolding. and sometimes related to real historical events.

@@NotUnymous The CIA dude (that has a villa with a pool, such tough spy life amirite) makes our hero "feel loved" by banging her to classical music and challenges her to stop being a cog in the machine and exercise free will. "Free will" in this case means defecting to good guys at CIA and getting her colleagues and superiors killed, btw. And it's treated like a nice, wholesome resolution to the story. And that Mordor-like country the movie depicts where a prima ballerina lives in a pigsty and can't afford food and medicine, where nobody has a cell phone and theater staff locker rooms look like they came straight from Silent Hill is not even supposed to be USSR, it's authors' idea of modern Russia. In contrast to elven village of US.
      Not propaganda at all. Right.
This movie is a worse red scare flick than fucking Red Dawn.

For me, as russian, this film was best comedy for last few years. Can't even remeber when I laughed so hard last time.
All that stupidity of the script, outdated propaganda, staged cruelty, senseless murders - what a great comedy! In this film, all stereotypes that Hollywood shoves in movies about Russia over the past 20 years are combined into one. Was surprised only by the lack of bears paratroopers with vodka and balalaika.
After watching that, I don't think even Tarantino could make more funny movie in trash genre. This movie beats all records of absurdity and humor.
And I'm really surprised that some people perceive this comedy as a historical or documentary film. I refuse to believe that there actually are such stupid people cmon.

But "Red Sparrow" was advertised by media as a historical true and that based on secret documents. While actually it based on cheap fiction novels from 90th about kgb sex spy academy (pretty famous stories at the time). With such falsification of facts - this is no longer "just a movie".

This movie's plot reminds me of the (non-fiction) book "Sexpionage: The Exploitation of Sex By Soviet Intelligence" by David Lewis (1973). IRL, the female agents were called "swallows" and the male agents were called "ravens". I believe the book is currently out of print, but if you get a chance to look it over it's a pretty interesting read.

Seeing people call this movie senseless comedic propaganda or whatever is the funniest thing ever considering Russia does the exact same thing with America or anyone else they oppose I can guarantee you 100% there are thousands if not hundreds of movies where Russia looks like the good guy and America looks like the bad guy or whatever and no one complains about those being propaganda. not one of us we literally could care less.

It has similar cinematography to the Girl in the Dragon Tattoo. It had a great twist at the end and I thought the storyline was captivating. I agree with Chris about the fence around the movie, you really are not put in a position to guess what's going to happen but they sprinkle undefined clues that don't come together till explained at the end. I also agree about the ballerina to killer thing didn't really sync. I give it a B+ and will watch again.

I was so curious to hear what critics thought of this movie, since I saw a screening of it back in October.
It's disappointing to hear that it still has pacing issues and is slow in parts, that was one of my big issues with it, that I mentioned in the survey, so I was hoping they would re-edit it, but doesn't seem like they did. I felt a lot of the same as you did Chris. I wanted to like this movie more then I did, but it just was too slow and all over the place for me to really like it.
I am planning to see it when its out in theaters again though, to see if they did change anything from when I saw it last.

RS 09 ethnicity and race are two different things, though. And to be honest you are the first person I've seen mention race in either of those movies, so I don't think it's that big of s deal. Also Gal Gadot and Natalie Portman are white. Again, I don't care about whitewashing of movies, but I feel like to say they aren't white is asinine

Just came back from watching this movie.
To be honest I always thought JL was a bit overrated but this movie really won me over.
My friends and I were entertained and on the edge of our seats from the first moments to the last.
I actually really liked that the movie took it's time with scenes that are usually just glossed over with a quick montage or something. It may not have been entirely needed but it goes a long way to show you just how messed up things are for the protagonist with makes you understand her a lot better as the story progresses.

I'm not saying that this was the intention behind this movie, but I am saying that this is why we're seeing films like this being produced again (and the fact that its author was a CIA guy REALLY makes me wonder).
I'm sure the movie is terrific.

Hello again, I watched it yesterday at my local theater. And yes, it was surprising, at times confusing ,but at the end I have to say it’s a strong thriller, a very good movie, it’s explicit, it’s very violent , it has nude scenes, its adult content. Nothing is glorified, exactly as you said. It’s a definite thumbs up for me. Its lengthy ,especially in the middle ,when it kind of looks as if it’s turning into a popcorn spy thriller, but then it comes back to being a heavy drama, an intense thriller. So, finally, this is not for the lighthearted, this is an adult movie with many plot twists where you really have to follow what is going on. I’ll definitely watch it again! Go see it, but beware it will be a punch in the stomach at times!

Now that you've put it (the movie) in the way you have, I'm now more than ever, interested to watch it. I enjoy it too when Hollywood studios venture to produce dark movies that are hard edged, gritty, and have unexpected graphic sex scenes in them. And whether those sex scenes are intentional or not, the important thing is that they serve the plot and overall movie. These are my kind of films; movies that are not your average adult fair; movies that are difficult to box. Thanx Stuckman for the review! Definitely will watch this one.

Sex in this movie in most scenes is not nice at all, quite the contrary. On the other hand it has some brutal and almost "gore" explosions of sheer violence (this sort of violence reminded me a lot of the movie "Possesor uncut", another very interesting movie). It is a dark movie. Which in my view is not per se a bad thing. The acting is fantastic, particularly in the case of Jenifer Lawrence. Photography is perfect. And the music by James Newton Howard fits perfectly in every scene. I have REALLY enjoyed this film, by I have to admit this is not a movie for everyone.

SPOILER ALERT. Watched it yesterday and loved it! I feel like many movie goers these days (including myself) have been fed so much Marvel / DC / Pacific Rimish stuff that they expect something that's similar in terms of difficulty to digest. This movie is a masterpiece and this is coming from someone who's not a Jennifer Lawrence fan. I don't even remember the last time I've been pulled in so deeply into an intrigue. It's rare to see every actor in a movie do their job so well. I was as terrified of Sebastian Hülk as when I saw T1000 as a kid. Matthias Schoenaerts was brilliant (ok the young Putin look helps a lot). What I really liked is that the plot wasn't dumbed down. When Nate and Dominika first meet I was like Ah Geez... it's gonna be one of those 'is he gonna find out she's a spy' kinda thing'" and then positively surprised that the characters are pros and took the relationship to a whole different level. Intrigue level 100.

Hey Chris, I've seen your reviews for all the Marvel Netflix shows and was wondering if you're going to review The Punisher?
Especially considering that JJ season 2 is coming out soon

When she signs up at the swimming pool she uses her real name Domenica but Nate says she is using Katerina when he reports to his boss.
Just thought I would mention that.

Lion Dano I see. You're about 12 years old and haven't figured out how grownups speak. You see, when someone says "Looks like a nice day" there is in reality some implied language there. What is really being said is *"From what is presented here, this* looks *to me* like a nice day."
      Extrapolate, boy genius.

I lost any love that I had for this b when she made "STAY AWAY FROM MY WORK!" statements about Trump supporters. It's utterly moronic to turn people away just because they have different political leanings. I have no such feelings about people who want to allow every third and second worlder to immigrate into the states and dilute the American middle class's wage to nothing.

Michael G, personally, I have no issues with the star of the movie. It just sounds to me like they made some really bad decisions in the script and plot.

Would you consider doing a Dear Zachary review? I think its message is still relevant and just an overall heartwrenching yet somehow inspiring story. More people should know about that :)
