Just saw this film. Thought it was a good solid spy thriller. And very female empowering really. Every corner she turns there's a man there waiting to beat her down, and she gets back up and keeps fighting. It's a film about Russia and how cold, cynical and exploitive of people they can be. How all governments can be.

Movie is way better than what they're making it out to be. Lawrence's character also shows a level of strength, intelligence, and resolve you just don't find very often. Didn't feel like a long movie either. And while I like Atomic Blonde it's the polar opposite to this. Don't expect action packed, popcorn fun with neon lights. This is a cold war drama with a far more realistic tone.

I Bought the CIA Red Sparrow awkward relationship. He knew she was a Russian spy trying to play him, she was always playing both sides. These critics either didn't pay attention, or they're just giving bad information. It was the Uncle who put her in the situation to be a Red Sparrow. He saw potential in her, That Was The Whole Point of the movie. Jennifer Lawrence's character is the bad ass her uncle thought she was, and in the end she killed him. Critics are lazy.

I predict the same for Jennifer Lawrence. Another bold daring role, looking fantastic and has an intense thriller film to her bow and under her belt. And everyone's talking about it. Not boring or predictable. It was supposed to be shocking this film and it's being criticised for that?

Regarding the floppy disk..Francis Lawrence address this “It’s actually something that is used a fair amount in places like the DOD and CIA,” Lawrence tells Inverse. “They don’t want important information to be on super small storage devices. Those are easy to hide. If you have important information you want them on something a bit bulky, maybe even a bit outdated that you need to have special drives.” As it turns out, old tech makes great security. “It’s an extra layer of protection,” Lawrence adds.

I just have to ask, do the reviewers know what a "Sparrow" or "Swallow" were in real life?
Because they were a thing, they were both male and female, and they were used against foreign targets in the Soviet Union, Europe, Asia and the USA.
Among the targets was the French Ambassador to the Soviet Union and his wife.

Jennifer Lawrence went on one of the late night shows recently and said (I'm paraphrasing here) that her nude scenes were a way for her to own her nudity after what happened with the nude photos of her that were released a few years ago. My response to her - not that she or anyone else is particularly looking for a response - would be to say the following:
Own it. Don't own it. Do whatever you want, and think whatever you want about it, but put it behind you. The only way you'll ever be able to take away its power over you is to simply move on and don't allow it to control your actions. I know this is an over-simplification of the issue, and nothing can take away the pain that was caused to you by the people responsible for leaking the photos, but try to focus on your art and simply let everything else fade into the background. Be nude, don't be nude, do whatever you want. Whatever choices you make in the future, do it because it's what you want to do, or because it's what your art demands, or really for any reason you want; but, don't do it because of anything those creeps did to you, because that's what gives them power.
Jennifer Lawrence is an exceptional actress who deserves much better movie roles than a lot of the dreck she's been in over the years.

    • @cjwright79
      @cjwright79 6 років тому +4

So your advice to her is 'do whatever you want'. I think that's exactly what she was already doing. I mean, how could she not.

I watched it yesterday and it was really good. The drama thriller, not your simple spy-story-popcorn movie. Very good cast doing an excellentob. This is a movie you have to pay attention to, otherwise you will lose plot details. This is not a simple spy- action movie. It’s a psychological spy thriller with nude scenes, explicit violence, for some surely difficult to digest.Only in the middle of the movie there is some weakness, the movie slows down and appears like a popcorn-spy movie, but it quickly turns onto its path of a serious thriller. And of course don’t forget to mention that the author of the original Nobile worked for the CIA, so, some poetic license granted, this man shirt he knows what he’s writing about. Ps This is an anti-hero story, so don’t be surprised if you don’t identify with the main character and if there is no relationship between the male and the female lead characters, both are just doing their jobs. This is an anti-hero story, so don’t be surprised if you don’t identify with the main characters and if there is no chemistry (in the eyes of the audience) between the male and the female lead characters, both are just doing their jobs. I saw it once and Shirley watch it again in order to get some plot details that I missed. This movie surprise me, at times it appeared to be popcorn movie, but it’s a hard spy thriller, low slow paced and interpreted by first-class actors. Just enjoy their performance, l watched it once and I am surely going to watch it again at the movies, not at home for the moment.

The most interesting thing to me is the way that fortunes rise and fall for celebrities, for seemingly no fault of their own. In 2015, Taylor Swift was Queen of the World. And likewise J Law was adored by the media. In 2018, Taylor Swift is a bitch and J Law is overrated. They are doing their same shtick as before but people are acting like something's changed about them. But nothing really has, we as the audience just get bored easily. Indeed. Rounders has a bunch of little things that can be picked apart (like the fact that Teddy didn't know he had it at the beginning, since Mike could have had quads), but it simply works. There is an ocean of great acting, from the fantastic, over the top KGB from Malkovich, down to the subtle Famke Janssen role, and to little things like "Fuck me? FUCK YOU!" The drama is well constructed. There is tension. There are some good laughs. The transitions between scenes work well. It's a great movie. If they ever do a sequel, we have to see Knish actually play some hands.

Seriously I'm not saying don't write about sexual violence, just do it right that actually serves the plot and taps into the character and who they are. Not just for shock vaule or a dramatic short cut. And where they character doesn't end up just being another object. Exactly the problem I had with the latest game of thrones season. They literally gave Sansa a storyline that wasn't hers in the book just so they could rape her and make her a "strong female character." Ugh. The only depiction of male-on-female rape i've ever seen done well was in big little lies. Shot in order to maximize the violence and violation, not to exploit a naked woman's body. The character is then represented with respect and sympathy.

No, that's not the takeaway you're supposed to get from the sexual training and the torture scene. Those scenes exist in the movie to counterbalance the finale (although I will say that the movie doesn't do a perfect job of making the dramatic connection). She sets her uncle up for probably what will be horrible, horrible torture before certain death in the end. In light of what the movie shows us of the methods of the Russian govt, the fate that she gives her uncle is extremely evil. To offset that evil, we have to see why it's justified. We have to see what he did to her. I completely disagree with Christy when she wrote that the rape and torture was gratuitous. Those scenes set the stage for the retribution at the end. This is especially true of the brutality of the interrogation. When the audience sees the look on her uncle's face in the end, it's very convincingly innocent and scared and you have sympathy for that --- until you consider the totality of what he let happen to her. Nobody in my audience was like how could she do that to him --- and that's crucial and it's a direct effect of the the rape scene and the torture/interrogation.
My complaint about this movie is actually different than yours. I liked it a lot, but it does smack of American propaganda. Metaphorically, the uncle represents the Russian govt (deft strategically, focused/driven to diabolically sharp degree. and indifferent). The CIA agent metaphorically represents America... and the propaganda part is that he is the exact opposite of the uncle: he's not nearly as strategically-minded ("clumsy" as they say; he is motivated by feelings, passions whether about beliefs or people); he's nowhere near as driven (because he won't make the kind of "coldhearted" sacrifices to himself and certainly not to others that the Russians are willing to do); and he cares. This is supposed to represent the ideological distinction between Russia and the United States. And when you read it that way (from an American filmmaker) it's jingoistic (and pretty bigoted if it weren't so absurdly exaggerated that it could be taken seriously). "They are heartless machines who would set their own family up for rape and death. In America, we believe in caring about people and we adhere to noble principles." The reality is that the CIA engages in the exact same spygame bullshit. This is propaganda not quite as appalling as Zero Dark Thirty (which was later revealed to be a CIA vehicle), but the timing shows a clear 'Murica! attitude that we don't need.
Still, that message was subtle enough that it didn't appall me, so I gave it an A-.
Fyi, not all field operatives (in the CIA or the intelligence agencies abroad) are trained in hand-to-hand combat. The badass ones that we're used to seeing in movies are few. Most operatives operate nonviolently using more cloak and little to no dagger. That's why the NOC list is so important. There are tons of them and they can't fight their way out if they're exposed.
Women hold the psychological leverage because they've got the fuck card. It's not in the least bit remarkable (to anyone who isn't naive) that this leverage is a valuable resource for the state (any state, including America) and that governments have studied it, formalized the protocols to increase its effectiveness, and then incorporated it into training. It sounds like the proposition of a woman fucking for a living is appalling and that's why you don't like this movie. But the movie isn't making the statement that all women do so or that women ~should~ do so.

5 years late but completely agree. You know they would have complained if the abuse and manipulation D was subjected to by her uncle was merely implied, never shown, or even shown a bit less than what the movie actually showed, because they really wouldn't be able to understand her want for revenge or why the audience sure agree his punishment was justified.

Not sure when I've seen a more inept review. Not that this was a great movie by any means, but the panel seem to have missed or misinterpreted almost every point. (They're right that the training phase was poorly handled, and sometimes left one wondering how she was able to do certain things). Overall consensus of this panel is very harsh and simplistic.

This is the first video I saw you guys talk about a movie. I hope you would watch it once more, because you were criticising scenes that from isolated view looked like what you were thinking it to be, but in truth with the context of previous scenes you might find out that the rape attempt was establishing her full commitment to the practice of sparrow. Also I don't believe that she was in love with the guy, because she learned at the start that he loves women and pays them from time to time, but afterwards he feels guilty. This just shows that the sex they had was just her reassuring of his support (if you remember he told her that the "mole" that he was covering is a true friend so why not be for him even more)
At least I am glad that I saw your video, because your reviews have the quality of ranting in a pub with friends.

In movies Hollywood is very good at making superhero spies (Mission Impossibke, Bourne, Atomic Blonde). But generally, whenever they try to do anything else, they fail. The brits do great and intelligent SPY films. This seems like a failed attempt at mixing both. I will see it anyway since I like this genre, both the good and the bad.

Please stop getting offended for other people. Lawrence has been plenty outspoken, if she had any issue whatsoever with the movie she'd just say it. Like she did with X-Men, or that movie with Chris Pratt that I'm forgetting the name of. If she doesn't give a shit about the nudity then why should anyone get offended on her behalf? I really wish Ben would have seen the movie as I'm sure he would have chimed in like during the Wolf of Wall Street review where he had that great bit about not giving a shit about people being offended for the rest of time.

I would rather see a film about all those Russian hackers and trolls in one room posting on USA-fb and USA-political sites. Jennifer Lawrence would also be the lead in this film. That element, plus the "extra-curricular" training which plays such a large part of Red Sparrow, would most likely get more people into tech and science fields...I am only partially joking.

    Kevin Feige: "Yes, hi?"
Francis Lawrence : "I would really love to make a Black Widow movie, but i want Jennifer Lawrence to play the lead, how does that sound?"
Kevin Feige: "what? No? First of all Jennifer Lawrence plays Mystiqe in the X-men universe. And eventhough she's an awfull Mystiqe, she is still there. Second, Scarlet Johansen is Black Widow in the MCU and she is doing an awesome job. We all wanna see a Black Widow, but it's gotta be with Scarlet in the lead.
Francis Lawrence: "Well fuck you Mr. Marvel i'll just go do my own Black Widow movie with Jennifer Lawrence, but i'll call it something else so you can't sue me."And that's how Red Sparrow happend. Now can we please get the REAL Black Widow movie.

  • @brajeshsingh2391
    @brajeshsingh2391 Рік тому

This movie is well directed. Its shot well and the screenplay is tight. Unfortunately the "logic" is really weak. I mean for a movie that has such a serious subject and tone, the actual plot is more than a stretch. It does have interesting elements but there just was too much contrivance and weak logic to justify the plot. The movie tries to balance the struggles or the exploitation of the lead with espionage thriller and fails on both counts. Agreed it was a tough plot but there could be no loose ends, certainly not as loose as the movie had.
Also the acting is poor. Jennifer Lawrence is really ordinary in the role. Neither is she able to display the emotional anguish or manipulative deception of her character. And frankly nobody is really convincing.
While you will be able to sit through Red Sparrow because the plot has interesting base, and the movie is well directed technically, its a poor effort on both the counts of drama and substance which are critical for a movie of this type.
I give this a 5. For all the style and length and the intense subject its pretty hollow on the inside.
Needed a better lead, acting and a much smarter plot.

Looks like most “reviewers” have not even read the first book let alone the trilogy which expands on the first book. It also sounds like the movie cut corners on covering the first aspect of Dominica’s tradecraft training. Rather jumping to the more salacious Sparrow School. Too bad. The two main characters do indeed dance around each other with a singular moment of sexual contact that seemed underwhelming... but that is the beauty of the plot... it’s not CANNED and doesn’t follow the usual OBVIOUS Hollywood model. I haven’t seen the film yet but I suspect it will be followed by two sequels Palace of Treason and The Kremlin Candidate both of which expand further on the plot created in the first book. Just a guess. I was a bit disappointed i the first book sighting a lot of the same issues many reviews have sighted... but after having read the second book it’s clear why. Unfortunately, these reviewers fail miserably in offering up any further details that might better edify the trilogy. I GIVE THIS REVIEW ONLY ONE STAR.
