Wow... There are actual metal bands that have covered this song that didn't do as well as these guys. I think this might be the best cover of this song I've ever heard
It started with Paul Di'Anno's Iron Maiden, the ultimate Punk Metal band. No one had seen anything like them before. The politicians in the Houses of Parliament were seething about them, trying to get Maiden banned from everywhere :) . It was a very special time in the history of rock music and to this day I don't think many punks and metalheads realise it.
And im telling you I don't want to here it. This wasn't quite an open forum though was it ? You intentionally picked out my comment. Why not juat make a fresh new post ? I just said the swearing can stop, but if you're incapable of stringing one decent sentence together then just say my man.
Thrash Metal and Punk Rock go hand in hand (due to the fact that Thrash has roots in Punk Rock), but to actually see a Punk band cover a Thrash band is rare, and I think these guys definitely pulled it off.
Out of all the Punk Rock bands, Sum 41 is easily one of the most respectable especially if you hail from Death Metal, Deathcore, Heavy Metal, Thrasher metal, etc
im a huge metallica fan and i kinda didnt like Sum 41 before i saw this and their cover of master of puppets....these guys now have my respect, great cover!
im blown away right now like fliping out i never knew they had this much talent i seen metallica live many times before and heard this song many times live and its almost exactly the same
Make his fight on the hill in the early day Constant chill deep inside Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say? For a hill men would kill, why? They do not know Stiffened wounds test there their pride Men of five, still alive through the raging glow Gone insane from the pain that they surely know For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls Take a look to the sky just before you die It is the last time you will Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery He hears the silence so loud Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be Now they see what will be, blinded eyes to see For whom the bell tolls Time marches on For whom the bell tolls
Can't believe someone said that this lacks soul ... Wtf it's not like you can put that much soul into it he doesn't have a total metal voice and Stevo fucking kicked serious ass as usual :)
My my... Myself, I love Metallica. Bought Ride the lightening when it came out, and was accused of devil worship for listening. Anyone who would even bring up the original to comment on this cover is... Well, you know what they are. These guys aren't trying to compete with Metalicca!! This is a tribute, and DAMN good cover. No one will ever do a better version of any original Metallica, that can't be done, so just listen to some real good stuff here by Sum 41, they ripped this song period.
Crazy over a year later I find myself coming back to this cover many times over lol.. easily the best cover there is of this song. Sum 41 has a few covers that sound as good if not better than the original!
Atleast they're playing it for the younger kids to hear instead of just letting em fade away. I know I would have never listened to Metallica if it wasn't for Sum 41 doing covers of em
Its real cool to see the metal and thrash influence in their writing, especially in the solos. I want to see the bad evolve even further in this direction, I believe they have the skills to do it!
@chaosandres Surely he'd be pleased and ecstatic that the music that he created is still being played and loved 25 years after he died? And being played to an amazing standard.
@snkeymlietrz hey, this song is the reminder of cliff, the best bass solo ever, but still they are making a cover cause of their love of metalica, so think of it . Really good cover.
they did a great job i love Sum 41 but Cone played bass a tad different. instead of just hammering off to the next note he picked every individual note..which coming from a bassist who covers this doesnt sound right! BUT thats the point of a cover to make it your own love this video great job Sum 41
Damnit sum 41 why did you have to go and show some skills I had a good thing going with the clownin on your "house punk" music now I gotta give you respect not cool guys but badass at the same time lol
@hobbes Or just listen to any of their albums. Even their first ones had metal style songs alongside their pop punk ones, like Pain for Pleasure or Still Waiting.
People who say this fucking rocks, obviously don't know how much this song can fucking rock, when played by a badass band like metallica. This is like christmas music.
@brillenwald Well its more of the Voice that makes it hard. Cause In alot of Metal Songs you are using a lot deeper tone and its a lot different Than Punk. But Deryck plays with Punk and Metal songs so he can sing both
pretty good cover but there was no bass at the beginning. didnt bring out the pedal or anything. i thought they would at least attempt it. other then that it was a good cover. :) a lot better then i could do
For those COMPARING this to Metallica's efforts. And how many times do you think Metallica have played/rehearsed this song, compared to these guys? Respect the music.
They're actually playing it the way Metallica played it back in the day. The guitars are tuned the way they're originally meant for the song itself. They're not tuned low like Metallica does now. They're not going 1000 miles an hour through the song and making mistakes like Metallica does live. It's a pretty good cover. But, I have to be honest and say I'm not a punk rock fan.
This is actually tuned low like how they play it now, the guitars are in Eb tuning instead of the Standard E tuning Metallica used in 84. And I really like 1000 mph when they play it live 🤣🤣🤣
and that is how punk bands earn respect from the metal brotherhood
A lot of people don’t realize that A LOT of 2000’s pop punk bands worship old metal bands like Priest, Maiden, Metallica, etc.

Wow...
There are actual metal bands that have covered this song that didn't do as well as these guys. I think this might be the best cover of this song I've ever heard
The Metal One it is better when they have Dave brownsounds
The Metal One ikr 😂😂 how is it that the punks get it almost perfect 😂
Sum 41 personnel are metalhead, you know! Metalheads that play punk!
Sum 41 basically became a metal band for their last 2 albums
It started with Paul Di'Anno's Iron Maiden, the ultimate Punk Metal band. No one had seen anything like them before. The politicians in the Houses of Parliament were seething about them, trying to get Maiden banned from everywhere :) . It was a very special time in the history of rock music and to this day I don't think many punks and metalheads realise it.
This was an awsome cover, nothing but respect to Metallica.
Stuart Jenkins What I meant is Sum 41 have shown respect by covering this. You can keep your foul language and opinions to yourself :)
And im telling you I don't want to here it. This wasn't quite an open forum though was it ? You intentionally picked out my comment. Why not juat make a fresh new post ? I just said the swearing can stop, but if you're incapable of stringing one decent sentence together then just say my man.
Hobbz The Reaper thats what idiots do when they lost a comment battle

This tone is perfect.

Nailed the guitar tones, even if the recording masks it a little; Vocals work BECAUSE singer's not trying to Het it up. Nice work.
James's long lost son
Out of all the Punk Rock bands, Sum 41 is easily one of the most respectable especially if you hail from Death Metal, Deathcore, Heavy Metal, Thrasher metal, etc
Listen to sum 41 album CHUCK. They were always big metal fans and that album was heavily influenced by metallica, their best album in my opinion
does this look infected as well
sum 41 never misses on a metallica cover
im a huge metallica fan and i kinda didnt like Sum 41 before i saw this and their cover of master of puppets....these guys now have my respect, great cover!
Sum 41 has a future as a Metallica cover band in Vegas.
Nah. Metallica fill that role.
Nah they are a band of their own. Greatest punk rock band.
im blown away right now like fliping out i never knew they had this much talent i seen metallica live many times before and heard this song many times live and its almost exactly the same
Sum 41 are surprisingly talented :) They have no shortage of good metal shit themselves, check out Chuck and Does this Look Infected

I almost raged when I saw the title, but then I realized they're doing a great job!
Great band..they can play metal song too

Yessir.
Crazy over a year later I find myself coming back to this cover many times over lol.. easily the best cover there is of this song. Sum 41 has a few covers that sound as good if not better than the original!
honestly this is probably the only time someone has done the intro properly while covering this song
I thought I was going to hate this but it kicked ass!
Sum 41 didn't get the fame or respect they deserve. Only here in Canada they were REALLY big. Same with Alexisonfire 100%
Really really good for a punk band...8/10....'Tallica 4ever!!!!!
Atleast they're playing it for the younger kids to hear instead of just letting em fade away. I know I would have never listened to Metallica if it wasn't for Sum 41 doing covers of em

Very good cover version. Sum41 ftw
@chaosandres Surely he'd be pleased and ecstatic that the music that he created is still being played and loved 25 years after he died? And being played to an amazing standard.

Really good cover.
Sum 41 does "The Best" Metallica cover ever!!
@TheBasketballDudes2 but I wouldn't expect Metal bands to play punk songs.
they did it well... this is what i call a good cover
Out of all bands why do limp Bizkit and sum41 do the best Metallica covers?
3/4 of Limp are QUALITY musicians. And, well, Fred just makes the band what it is as well I guess.
dragon2712 best way to put it xD

I have a felling that Sum 41 love to cover Metallica songs.

Check out The Decline by NoFX... 18 minutes.

@vindrila Thats a good thing tho. I always like a good Metallica cover.
METALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL YEAHHHHHHHHHH
