Dining Table Made From Pallets!

  • In this video I build a dining table from reclaimed pallet lumber. Butcher block style with many layers of glaze-coat epoxy finish. I spent hundreds of hours on the weekends, off and on between projects for over 3 years on this table! Unfortunately I had an Sd-card die and I lost all the repetitive footage of me destroying piles and piles of pallets, but you can watch my other videos if you really need to see the process. Sorry for the grainy footage in the beginning, its from an earlier camera I no longer use.
    This video contains the last footage of my grandfathers workshop. I had been spending every weekend i could with him, his health had been declining so it was very important to me to spend as much time with him as i could, and this project was started in the little bits of time i could squeeze in between ball games and PBR's. He was a great guy, a closest friend and a mentor with a thousand lessons and a million stories,. He will never be forgotten. Na Zdravi! to my friend Lew
    A big thanks to FUJII for allowing me to use his music for the background tracks.

      Why haters? When someone does not agree with the general feeling, is he a hater? Don't use that word with such contempt at people who don't share your judgement, BECAUSE YOURS TOO IS A JUDGEMENT! Honestly, for having built a comparable table with palettes in France (much more beautiful palettes than these), it's too much work and repeating work for a modest output. It's about how, the method, you start to build it. Classify me as a hater, that won't change my objective note.

    • @marytramp5678
      @marytramp5678 4 роки тому +3

      @@joetke it's "haters" bc you're so negative. and only people filled with anger and hate are so negative. There are ways to voice your maybe not so objective opinion, get your point across, and not be so negative. I say maybe not so objective only bc you said things like," much more beautiful palettes than these." That is subjective and up for interpretation. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
      when you want to criticize someone's work, " too much work for a modest output." Follow up with something helpful.. When I have made a comparable table, I start by trying to find better palettes. then when assembling I .....then you can finish it with," yours is nice, a little too labor intensive, especially for the end result. I hope my tips can help you in the future."
      I'm no woodworking pro not even a beginner, but I do know that there is ALWAYS more to be learned and more ways to do things. To be negative about anyone's hard work is being not only hateful but hurtful and I think there's just about enough of that in the world don't you? Good Luck and peace be with you! 💕

    I was touched by your tribute to your grandfather. I grew up raised by a single mom. Fortunately I had a grandfather who was a master builder as well as uncles who were plumbers, electricians, mechanics and machinists. They were patient enough to impart a great deal of wisdom to me and I will be forever grateful. I am trying my best to teach the next generation as I am sure you will. Wonderful project. I chipped a very expensive planing blade by using reclaimed wood that had finishing nails in it because I didn't check with a detector. I was "Penny wise, but pound foolish." Good advice. If you have a very strong neodymium magnet, that will work as well if you don't have a metal detector, and best yet, it doesn't need batteries!

    A beautiful piece of work!
    OMG the labor involved to reclaim the pallets!
    When you start the chairs, find a local tree trimmer and tell him what you are looking for, it might take some time but it will be worth the wait.
    You don't need a full on mill, a lot can be done with the simplest of tools as you know.
    Best regards!

    • @treecycled
      @treecycled  5 років тому +12

      I usually snap a piece of scrap wood off, or use the scrappy little red craftsman add in that came with my other table saw. A lot of this footage from early in the video is almost 4 years old when i never used them and didn't really concern myself with safety a whole lot, more of a get it done type attitude. I have since built a discipline about it and will use them within 3 inches of the blade now. I definitely could use a set, but i plan on building them in a future quick video. Thanks for watching David! welcome to my channel!

    Your dining table turned out amazing! Kudos!!

    • @MariaTorres-hc5uq
      @MariaTorres-hc5uq 4 роки тому +1

      Yes! In Lisbon Portugal we say the same!! "Pra quem é bacalhau basta!" It means that you can serve bacalau, a cheap food (it's dried codfish and it's very popular here), instead of a more refined dish. The table is gorgeous!

    • @zappaloui
      @zappaloui 4 роки тому +1

      @@MariaTorres-hc5uq Hahaha! My dad says that all the time: "Pra quem é, bacalhau basta!". He must've heard that from his Grandfather, he was from Aveiro. However, that phrase naver made much sense over here (Sudeste Brasileiro) because 'bacalhau' isn't exactly a cheap item, hence the use of its variant.
      Gotta love this little subtile intrincacies of cultural heritage and exchange, right?

    • @strikebr

    • @joenalaska
      @joenalaska 4 роки тому +1

      Well, that's because he made way more work for himself then he needed to, from the glue up to the epoxy finish. Good effort and a great first table, this is the kind of project that teaches you how to do it so much easier and better next time. Luckily you have UA-cam so there's no need for you to add unneeded coats and unnecessary cleanup (with proper prep). Learn from other people's mistakes! Get googling and you'll find everything you need.

    • @treecycled
      @treecycled  3 роки тому

      I agree. In these earlier videos i took my safety way too lightly. I use a push stick almost religiously now unless im doing the Flip-rip method, and then hands aren't even close to the blades. These table saws i used had all the of "safety features" pulled before i ever used them, I've recently purchased a brand new cabinet saw with riving knife, blade guards, etc.. Thanks for the concern though, its dually noted, and thanks for watching!

    Nice, almost looks like a bowling lane. Though if I were going to make this I would have found a way to hide the screws and bolts so you couldn't see them. I noticed several things that seemed to make more work for yourself and ended up taking longer to complete. If you had cut all the palette boards to the same width and glued and clamped them on a flat surface you would have had far less planing to do. Once you put glue on them the nails were not necessary. Things like that add up in time.

    • @drockx85
      @drockx85 4 роки тому

      Yeah, I didn't like how he planed his boards. Run them through at the same time and they come out the same thickness, no extra sanding or planing at they end.
