This reminds me of an account I once read from Leigh Brackett, a legendary screenwriter who wrote several films for John Wayne including Rio Bravo and El Dorado. El Dorado is just an updated version of Rio Bravo, and during filming, Wayne wanted to repeat several key scenes exactly, but Brackett had written them in a different way than in the earlier movie. The Duke wasn't having any of it and asked her to change the scenes back. Brackett stood her ground at first, saying she didn't want to copy what was done before because that just wasn't good practice. Wayne simply told her, "If it was good once, it'll be good every time." And that was that. The scenes are pretty much identical in both movies. lol

+honeybeebadger No, he didn't. However, he did try to enlist, and there are letters to a few friends asking their advice about which branch he should join. Eventually, he made the decision to sign up to be a recruiter and press photographer on the front lines because people would follow him anywhere. An OSS commander even approved his application, but the response was sent to the home of his estranged wife who didn't tell him about it. If something had happened to him, she would have had to raise their four kids by herself. It's a matter of public record...private record too with his grandchildren having some of those letters.
Whether you agreed with his politics or not, John Wayne was one of the greatest stars in the history of movies. He had a presence and a charisma that was unmatched. A true legend that deserves his status as an American icon.
Lynn Turman I didn't agree with John Wayne's politics, but I recognise that his political opinions were sincere and we shouldn't be either too cynical or too trusting. I do fully agree that Wayne was a genuine movie legend, with real charisma, charm, humour and who put in many fine performances and too many professional performances to count. His best films are just as rewarding to watch today as when they were made.
+Lynn Turman Even Maoist Jean-Luc Godard has acknowledged Wayne's acting genius - such as, Godard has offered, exemplified in the Searchers scene where he picks up Nathalie Wood off onto the horse.
In terms of the Oscar's or other acting awards John Wayne was seriously under rated. Without doubt his best performances were in westerns but that doesn't make him a limited actor. Just look at his performance in The Searcher's in particular and how he makes what he does look easy and so natural.I picked out The Searcher's as a prime example but there were more that we are all familiar with. Deserved the Oscar he got but he should have had one before.

But today its much more than just giving the award for best actor. Or would you say that the committee who chooses winners would without a doubt reward the best actor without looking what message the film he is in projects? For example if there were Dirty Harry type of film that had great acting by the main character, and then another film which had more critical look of police but lousier actor, which one would you think had won this year? Considering that that cop killed George Floyd i see it being impossible that any role that gives even slightly sympathetic view of police, wouldnt be allowed to win even if it were oscar worth performance.

John Wayne was a draft dodging coward.

I use to think he was bad because of his politics but now I just remember what he was to the American motion pictures. He is irreplaceable.

In terms of the Oscar's or other acting awards John Wayne was seriously under rated. Without doubt his best performances were in westerns but that doesn't make him a limited actor. @@runnerlegend7726 Sadly Wayne had already had lung cancer in 1964 and had his left lung removed well before he made True Grit not to mention The Shootist which he was very good in. Everyone in The Shootist begged to be in it so they could work with and support "The Duke". They were all friends of his except O'Brien who became his friend on the set of "The Shootist" I believe. Wayne stopped coming to work on Shootist because of his health so they all shot around him as much as possible for some while before he could come back. It was spendy and probably didn't help the movie or performances but who was going to fire and replace John Wayne? Nobody... They were ready to hire George C. Scott to play The Shootist which I can't even imagine. Then they found out that Wayne wanted to play the part...so guess who got the part!
