- This is a recording of my appearance on Eric Rhoads' Art School Live. It was a wonderful experience and an honor to be on. In the video I go over why I think doing mastercopies is probably the single best exercise you can do to learn and grow in you art and become a better painter, and go over why and how I've been doing them for so long. In the video I go over doing small composition copies or oil sketches, to more refined copies from favorite artists such as Ivan Shishkin, Isaac Levitan, John Singer Sargent, and more. Enjoy!

I wish Patrick Okrasinski was left to explain his work with fewer interruptions & questions. There was a couple of times when the interviewer took the discussion in a totally different direction than Okrasinski was intending.

This is Eric’s personality, he gets excited and involved with his guests by relating it to his own experiences or revelations as an amateur. I cringe because I would do exactly the same thing if I was interviewing, which is why I don’t interview 😂
Interesting and timely as I am beginning some Master Copies (June 2024).
i copied Vermeer multipole times at the NY Metroplitan Museum--just painting the wall behind the figure, on one of them, amazed me in it's complex colors!
master copies are the best learning tool. It is very full proof plus painting from nature, outside. Lately I’ve just gotten into painting with natural light

Is it legal to paint a master copy at the original size but crop in on a small section? I've been wanting to do a master copy of a Thomas Cole landscape. I was only wanting to crop in and copy one of the trees in for foreground...I was planing on painting it full size.
Joe McGurl does many many 6x8" studies on location for a larger painting in the studio.

It's amazing how many people can get these master copies very close so they have the ability but when they do their own work it doesn't really stand up. So what is the real skill? is it the creative side and decisions you make on composition, values, the right techniques to convey a corn field etc.
Tough question. Little bit of everything. Like in music it easy to play a song but harder to write a good one, the creative element is definitely a factor. I think it’s mostly the decision making behind the painting that is hardest to crack. It’s easy to copy the right color when you already see it done, but trying develop your own sensibility and taste is tough. But I think an important part of the answer to that is by exposing yourself to lots of great art, along with the technical.
Is there a resource for a full list of official, legal rules for master copies?
just don't sign the signature and try to sell it as an original!
Have you ever done 5X7 studies for portraits? Or would you recommend it?
A couple- would be a great idea if you wanted to only focus on color. Crank out a lot of them!

Do master copies have to be of works by dead artists??
Not really- I suppose it can be any artist you admire. BUT generally it is a good idea to choose dead artists, as those are the ones that have stood the test of time and are really good, even if we don’t realize how good they are while copying them, and because no one really wants to be considered a knock off of a living artist. Best solution is to copy far and wide imo, and eventually you build your own voice
@@patrickokra I’d love to be a knock off of Clyde Asprvig😆😆 but nature does pretty well too.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you are open to selling your mastercopies/studies, you can't do that if the artist is living (or recently deceased) because of copyright stuff. That said in general it's a good idea to study any paintings you are really interested in and inspired by, you can learn a lot from your contemporaries as well

@@patrickokra Chelsea Lang advocates picking a few artists whose style really inspires you, so that you learn their techniques and then incorporate that learning plus your own individuality into your own voice.
