    The Jupiter 60 and UP 119 Replicas were referred to O-Connor Engineering in Costa Mesa, California by Disney after hearing about Walt Disney Studios building both the C.K. Holliday, and E.P. Ripley locomotives from scratch for Disneyland in Anaheim.
    The boilers were built by the Dixon Boiler Company, also based in California, and the paint work was designed by the help of famous Disney Animator, Ward Kimball. :)
    The Jupiter and UP 119 are possibly 2 of the most beautiful steam locomotives in North America, and having just had the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike last year, steam up throughout the Spring, Summer, and selected dates in the winter.
    These old Bachmann 4-4-0s may not be the best, but hold a lot of character and charm. The newer 4-4-0s are much nicer, but are more than 3 times the price, and 50 pounds is a fair price for the older 4-4-0s since they're around $65 US dollars here, which isn't bad.

    Related tangent.
    One day, a man by the name of Chadwell O'Connor was enjoying his hobby, filming trains, when he felt a tap on his shoulder. Another train lover was asking to look at his camera. O’Connor has built a special fluid head bearing that moved so smoothly. The other man was amazed. “Can you make some of them for me? By the way, my name’s Walt Disney.”
    This meeting in 1952 lead to a friendship between the two and between their respective companies, to the point that when the National Parks Service was building the Gold Spike park, they originally went to Walt Disney Imagineering to have them build the replicas of 119 and Jupiter. The Disney company turned them down, but recommend O’Connel’s company instead, who agreeded.

    Casual railroader here, I've had one of these since I was a kid (I'm 35 now) and knock on wood I've never had a mechanical problem with it and it's still happy to do laps around my Christmas tree during the holidays. I do recognize many of the same running issues you had; it struggles with points, it's very noisy, and that wire going from the tender to the loco broke exactly the same as yours. And while the packaging isn't any kid of luxurious, the styrofoam's done more than a good job of keeping it safe in storage.
    One problem I constantly have with mine is the front truck (I think you Brits have a different term for them that escapes me atm) likes to jump off the tracks for...seemingly any reason it can think of. It seems to get worse when it's pulling a long/heavy consist of cars behind it, almost like the force of the drive wheels pulling unweights the front of the loco and there's nothing to keep the front wheels from climbing over the rails. But it'll even do that just running by itself unless I put a fair amount more time and effort into setting up my track than I need to for any of my other trains.
    Regardless, thanks for bringing this back into my recent memory. I haven't done the "model train around the tree" thing in a few years now. Maybe I'll bring it out again this holiday season.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Wow! That's very impressive Mike, I am very surprised! Yes I had issues with my front truck too initially - I think I've managed to adjust it properly now, but it was a nuisance!

    Sam, great review and you did a great job on the history! Not a lot of people that are not from the States do not know much about the golden spike nor the 119 but you do so hats off to you! Now, the paint scheme is correct. At the time of when the model was made, the prototype was in this paint scheme. The reason why she does not look like this today is because no one truly knows what both the Jupiter and 119 looked like. As a result, historians have been revising the scheme over the years and the one the model has was one of the revised paint schemes. Same can be said for the current paint scheme. It was revised from the scheme that is on the model. In other words, Bachman did not try to make the scheme different but was basing it off of what the replica had at the time. Currently, they are thinking about revising it again. Thanks for the review and happy railroading!

    I have the modern Jupiter steam locomotive, and I paid around $200 for it with sound, and I’d say it’s definitely worth the upgrade. With 12 wheel pickup, good performance on points, and with it being much more modern in the tooling. It’s very good if you’re willing to put down the money for it. Oh and the cab is open to a degree

    The tender-motor plus loco-drive was a feature of the 1950s Graham Farish King class - but in that instance they were not permanently coupled: the drive was via a cardan shaft where a square 'pin' fitted into a socket, so the loco and tender could easily be separated. I can see how the small size of the loco pushed Bachmann towards a tender-drive, but with those tiny wheels on the tender they went for the unusual drive-shaft arrangement.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому

      Blimey, dating back that far?! Yes that does make sense - it would have been foolish to opt for full tender drive on a model like this!

    The true master of this kind of drive system is Roco! On most (modern) Roco tender-locos the motor (and DCC socket) is in the tender, and has a shaft drive (hidden) that drives the loco it self, but the tender wheels are also driven too (and pick up), so those locos have no pulling power issues for sure, specially the 2-10-0 s! And since its Roco the 5 pole motor, both loco+tender pickups, and good mechanism is evident.

    Just got this from Hattons, £42, afterm missing out on a model of 'The General.' Indeed, most of these 'Wild Western ' frontier locos were wood burners. Here in New Zealand we have a couple of Rogers loco from 1877 preserved, and indeed it has lots of colours. Look up NZR Rogers K class. No 88 and 92 are fully preserved.

  • @Zebrails
    @Zebrails 4 роки тому

    Casey's 382 is a better loco, YES! The 119 is at least 30 years old and someone put a knuckle coupler on it. Originally had X2F Horn Hooks on it. Awesome crawl (less on point frogs) but to pull so many coaches, outstanding. It's a "classic" locomotive in North America. I've got a static "Jupiter" with matching rolling stock behind it. It's a novelty locomotive, like your RivaRossi Casey Jones. But, the fact it still runs and looks good is some sort of testimony that "good" luck can still be had. Awesome review and respect to this piece.

    If you want a nice older 4-4-0 to look at, keep an eye out for a Tyco "General". They were all cast metal and really nice. They came available as a kit and I was lucky enough to find a sealed kit from the 1970s and build it myself a couple years ago; It was a lot of fun and it runs great. Came unpainted and everything. They're actually smaller than the bachmann 4-4-0s but they're really interesting models. Also, Tyco acquired the tooling from Varney I believe, so they aren't of the typical Tyco build quality.
    Anyways, thanks for another great video.

    Really like this model. My favourite film of all time is The General - the 4-4-0s like the one seen in the film and this one are really rather beautiful and I consider them works of art with the colours and bonds the drivers made with their locomotives!
    Another idea would be to pick up some cheap American box cars or wagons, so you have something to pull with your American locos since you've got a fair few. I feel that could really capture the feel of the locos better if you had some old fashioned wagons trailing them! These 4-4-0s would pull anything from passengers to freight and played a huge part in the American Civil War, and this model really does look great and is pretty accurate design and colour wise too! The lamps were pretty huge, they were often oil lamps contained in a large box for a reservoir of oil to burn at night, and the tenders would carry huge wood logs and planks as they burned wood very efficiently. The wood on this model looks very odd, they'd normally be long planks just whacked lengthways on the tender.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  4 роки тому +1

      Me too! It is a lot of fun - and maybe the fact that they're in so many films makes me love them even more! Great idea too - I'd be down for that! :D

    I also found a great way to stop your locos from stopping on points. You grab some glue and some tin foil, you then rip a small pea ice of foil and measure it on the frog of the point. You then put a little bit of glue (a little bit) and place the foil right whee were the glue is. And test a loco on it and it will hopefully run without a problem

    One note about the paint scheme, we still don't fully know the colors used due to not much detail is out there. Something that has helped is knowing how the colors reacted with the film/plate that were used during that era, thus why most are certain that CPRR Jupiter was blue and UPRR 119 red. Both engines in real life are lookers to say the least and was very lucky to be able to see them at the 150th anniversary celebration on May 10, 2019. Now as for the models, it would be great if a manufacture could create more detailed and accurate models of these engines. The retooled Bachmann engines are a step in the right direction but the paint is still the same as old. Until then I will wait or look for one of the brass sets that were made.

      The older ones (in both H0 and N scale) seem to be made in Hong Kong, the newer ones in China. The older ones have a simplified paint scheme in both scales. No line on the running board, no rosette between the driving wheels. The sand dome and lantern are red. In N scale the steam dome is made of brass on both locos. The "RR" in Union Pacific RR does not look like "AA" in the Hong Kong made locomotives. Also, the steam dome, bell and cylinder are painted in gold in the Hong Kong made H0 loco. The Chinese one has the same bronze hue seen on the locomotive you reviewed. The final gears on the N scale locomotives are made of metal. I think I prefer the new paint scheme. All locomotives run well, but one needs to consider the electrical pickup limitations. These are strictly oval track locos. Would I pay $250 for one of these made with the new tooling? Not unless the steam dome, bell and cylinder were made of brass. Or I win in lottery. Whichever comes first!

I don't know if the previous owner modified it or something. The motor on mine once burned my finger when I touched it. I paid around 20£ for it so It's not that big of a deal. Sam, your tourist coaches are great behind this old-timer. The very old gas-lit clerestory coaches with balconies at both ends are hideously rare (probably much like your tourist coaches) but also are probably not in the right (or no ) livery to suit the Jupiter and 119 locos. I have a pair in UP (Armory) Yellow, so painted too modern to go with this loco, but for a tourist attraction (hence allowing all sorts of different era USA locos) could be allowed! (Yes, includes Challenger, Big-Boy, F3 and Doodlebugs!)

    I have one of these (doesn’t run of course) but it actually does have pickups in the main locomotive it’s just on one side, the broken wire you talked about at 15:00 is the only connection to lead power from the chassis to the motor which is why your example only works on the tender. Not a criticism or judgement just something I thought would be helpful to know.

    As a toy, for GBP 25, and if you accept it to become a shelf decoration sooner or later, why not.
    Anyway, I had made some tests with my Bachmann N class (ref. 32-166) and I had been lucky to have no problems with freight wagons due to the kinky towbar (test on R2 curves on reverse, including full throttle runs, and backing on a R2 point). I might be lucky but I agree with you : a system that is uselessly overcomplicated had to be scraped. I'll do another test with passenger coaches later to see if there is a problem, maybe yes.
    So, for this locomotive... Well, if you take it as a decoration for a shelf with a (limited) ability to tow wagons, that can be interesting. As a collector's item, it has its interest. And thank you for the original subject for this video. I like changes like that.

    Hi Sam! Great little loco for the price! As this loco had a straight smoke stack it would suggest it was coal burning, this make sense as the Union Pacific transversed the Great Plains with nary a tree to be seen. Also coal is cheaper to transport than milled wood from way back east, so therefore I suspect the tender of this model is a wood burning one that has been painted to represent a coal load thus highlighting this inaccurate detail rather than hiding it- silly buggers _Dave

      The old Bachmann 4-4-0s were terrible in detail, quality, and accuracy. The 119 was a coal-fired engine and Jupiter was a wood burner. This was recently rectified by Bachmann with their re-tooled 119 and the rest of the re-tooled Bachmann 4-4-0s which are now much more accurately detailed, better running and equipped with DCC and Sound.

    I have just unboxed my 009 gauge Lyd today and I can confirm why its expensive for such a small loco, it's due to being very well detailed, some parts made of diecast and mechanism is very well detailed for its size. The first differences I see is that the cab is actually there, the coal load is more realistic, and the tender wheels are bigger and the trucks are more accurate. haven't taken the new one apart for maintenance yet, but from how it runs it seems to have a flywheel motor. it also comes with sound and digital control, which is always lovely to have. I believe your former Jupiter was in the silver and red, where if you looks at pictures, the replica is in blue and red. So same goes for 118, but it's not as drastic between the replica and the original, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure that ugly load is covering the motor. I have an earlier version of this locomotive and it doesn't have that "feature". What it does have is a motor that sits too low in the chassis, causing arcing between the motor and pickup wheels on the tender. I simply added some washers between the trucks and tender body to increase the gap. The locomotive runs perfectly now. It looks to me as though Bachmann raised the motor in later versions to cure that issue and they had to cover it up. So, you get an ugly load for your tender. They could have just shimmed the trucks like I did.

    The 1860's-70's were pretty colorful. Look at colorized (corrected) pictures of clothing of the time. The Bachmann 119
    like many locos in their line were intended for kids and not serious adult modelers.
    Bachmann introduced a higher grade line for U.S. collectors, similar to the British models you regularly torpedo on here.

      That's true!! Why did they drop all the lovely colours in later years?!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

      @@SamsTrains I blame Queen Victoria going around wearing black all the time.
      Victoria may have been a great Queen, but not a great fashion maven.

    Hey how did you get the loco to run so well. I have the same model and it occasionally stops running and I don't think it's getting much electrical connection.
