I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to see this video. When the Nobska came into view, I almost cried. Summers on the island in the 60s and 70s were heavenly. I refuse to return, knowing my heart would be broken at everything I'd see on the modern Nantucket
I am a native now living in vermont. It is so heart breaking there. I have only been back twice in the last ten years for family funerals. The spirit died decades ago
I've only been going to Nantucket (maybe 4-5 days each year) for the past 15 years or so. I was there 2 weeks ago! Good to see much of the downtown area practically identical to these films (especially the Whaling Museum and the Yacht Club...they are identical today!).
Remember kids jumping off the stern of the Nobska. Thought of joining in, but witnessed more than once, the propeller coming into motion with kids in the water. My grandmother would not have been happy had I cut my arm off. - I was also the first to witness Preston's at dawn the day after the fire. The only thing left, after turning down Airport Road, was the chimney in 1.5 ft of hot coals.
Are you on the Uncateena in the beginning? I remember that LOUD ship and how long it took to get to Nantucket. I was in Nantucket as a kid int he 1960's. I LOVE this nostalgic trip back there. THANK YOU!!!
thanks for putting up this video, i was there in 1977, can you tell me why the hotel rates are so expensive now 200-300 dollars, yet from the videos of ive seen present day nantucket on youtube it doesnt even look as good as i remember it.
I watched looking for glimpses of my grand parents who built a place out in Wauwinet in the 50's. Our family just sold, as the place is mad house, and keeping the house would have been mayhem for the next generation.
You would think that after running one roll of film through the camera that you would realize that panning all around makes the picture blurry and unwatchable. The human eye jumps from image to image unlike the movie camera. The fix is to focus on one subject, stop, and go to the next scene and resume. I have 16mm film the 1940s of Nantucket that is almost broadcast quality mostly because my Grandfather did not pan.

Best Nantucket pictures/video on the web! For those who remember Nantucket in the 60s and 70s, this is the real thing.
I spent the summers on Nantucket out in 'Sconset - 1969-1973 - great times.
The movie Summer of 42, reminded me of Nantucket.

I still have a little medal I won swimming in the "Sankaty Head Olympics" in 1973,do they still have that swimming tournament there?

I rode the Uncateena once or twice as a kid!!!
The Uncateena, horrible boat that it was, was not yet built!
I grew up on Nantucket in the 60s and we called it the “Junkateena”
Alot of people miss Whitey Wilhauer. He once said the harbor is alot cleaner now than it was in the 60s. So there is that.
The harbor is cleaner now because the steamers don’t empty their waste holding tanks indiscriminately anymore.
Went in 66 thru69.As a kid .Went back in 2019 and there are way too many millionaires there now.Glad I experienced it back then.

Nantucket looks so different now...
The newest car I saw - 1964 Chevrolet sedan.
larry millers buick riveria . I remember that car well
I didn't see Colonel Hans Landa anywhere.
yeah i didnt realize it changed so much. why are the hotel rates so high 200-300 dollars yet doesnt necessarily look as good anymore.
200-300 dollar hotel rooms? Try $400+ Crazy prices but it is a beautiful place, then and now

They call it the invasion of the billionaires. It's really changed from when I lived there in the 70's.

believe me they were always there, they just had more taste back then and were okay with more ruggedness
The late 60s and early 70s - best of times. The wealth was there but it was much more subtle - understated.

Did Joe Cocker take this movie; shaking and panning

circa..140 yrs since the white whale sunk the Essex
And now it's ruined with huge empty homes.
More like the late '50s
