    I wish more synths had deep effects sections integrated into the hardware. Effects are a valuable component of sound design.

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide 7 років тому +9

      The problem is that a good built-in effect adds significant cost, and a not so good one is just a waste of space and money. though if it allows you to modulate effects parameters with the synth's filter, envelope, LFO etc. that could make for some rather amazing effects. I don't think many synths do that, however, unless you get the right eurorack modules and put them together yourself.

    • @dbpooper7512
      @dbpooper7512 7 років тому +9

      Honestly, I'd be happier with really cheap, shitty fx than none at all. Even if you can't use them for their intended purpose, they're still tools you can make use of.
      Admittedly, even crap effects add cost, so you're not wrong. It's just that once you incorporate outboard effects into the dna of a patch, you're basically already in modular territory. But if you could do all of the sound design within the synth, you could save it as a preset.

    • @hakonsoreide
      @hakonsoreide 7 років тому +5

      Saving it all as a preset, including effects, can be a huge advantage, I agree, and perhaps the strongest argument for onboard effects. I guess I've changed my mind a bit about this now: as long as effects easily can be bypassed, having them is more of advantage than not, and probably worth the additional cost. And to those who would insist on outboard effects, that cost would probably not be too prohibitive either as they'd already felt they could afford the extra gear for external processing just to get that slightly improved/different sound at an even higher additional cost. Now, if the likes of Strymon could license some of their effect tech to be integrated into synthesizers, that could make for quite an epic-sounding machine all in one box. And - if one could access just the effects section of the synth, one could process other audio through it too.

    The dry sound is very useful for certain applications. Sometimes a hard syncopated metronomic staccato timbre works better than a washed out modulated smear.

  • @metaspherz
    @metaspherz 7 років тому +11

    There's a wide range of reactions to your dry sound vs. FX video. Some reactions were lame and insulting while others genuinely appreciated your efforts. I'm with the latter bunch. A lot of us have struggled with technique and find it helpful when guys like you take the time to do the ol' show and tell. Thanks! I never once thought about chaining one of my guitar peddles to a synth. My synths all have FX, noise, reverb, filters and other such stuff built in. But I can see some dramatic sonic possibilities by using FX peddles since they all seem to have their own set of musical personalities to explore.
    I've seen some modular synth videos that sounded amazing that used peddles like Earthquaker Transmisser, and the Acapulco Gold among others. Why not experiment?

      I didn't like the sound of Valhalla except shimmer. I also use Rob Papen's RP Verb which can sound extremely good, it's just that in Ableton it always ends up deleting settings between saves. I had a need for a hardware unit with my modular and I'm really happy with Big Sky.

    effects on a synthesizer are like spices in soup...depends on what kind of soup you are making and what the main dish is and in the hands of the right cook (keyboardist) the effects can work wonders. Personally, I like the more subtle effects just to add to the richness of the piece you are working on.

    I gotta start look into some pedals..! Usually use the Electribe 2 synth and sampler, which have some decent effects, but not exactly "everything i ever dreamed about"... And only 1 effect parameter per effect is a joke. Same with being limited to just 1 "local effect" per track... And 1 LFO per track... And 1 voice per track... And only "attack and decay" envelopes... I still REALLY like these instruments, but they could have been MUCH better...

    You dont need to buy effects for a good synth. The internal effects are always better option because of less rumble interference of external conections for example.

    • @jean-louispech4921
      @jean-louispech4921 6 років тому +3

      " The internal effects" ...
      1) many analog syths don't have internal effects....
      2) internal effects is not always equal to good effect, and external effects can be better.
      A bad internal reverb, is a bad option when you want a good sound with reverb like etherals pads.

      Some are jealous that the reverb unit cost nearly as much as their synth. Reverbs nowadays have advanced to become synthesizers themselves.

    • @simonbeck7446
      @simonbeck7446 4 роки тому

      Up to the late 1970s, most synths didn't include much in the way of post-processing- the VCS3 had a spring reverb, the CS-80 had chorus and tremolo, but generally they were fed through external effects. The Roland Juno-6 had an analogue chorus effect to make up for its single-oscillator architecture. By the 1990s the boundary between digital sound generation and signal processing was becoming blurred. With the widespread return of analogue synths has come a view (rightly or otherwise) that DSP should not be part of an analogue instrument.

    Basic as fuck (3 wave form) analog synthesizers definitely need something to make them sound interesting. I became bored with classic analog years ago. There is only so much you can squeeze out of those machines. Dave Smith realized this when he designed the Prophet 12. But the synth market these days is geared toward nostalgia, so he's cranking out modern antiques like the Prophet 6 and Rev 2 as fast as he can to cash in.

      >"(3 wave form) analog synthesizers definitely need something to make them sound interesting." - I've noticed that good programming skills make them sound a lot better than effects. Unfortunately a lot of keyboard players are not actually synthesizer players and need help to sound good. So effects do have a purpose.

    Funny how people complain about synths not having built-in FX. In a period where everybody and his grannie knows of eurorack/modular synthesizers, I think it can be called ironic. You know what type of devices always have built-in FX? Aira-crap, roland boutique-crap, arturia-crap, akai-crap and about every other manufacturer making devices primarily focused on 16 year olds/people working at McDonalds. ---Say you buy a serious synthesizer, e.g. a Minimoog, Deckard's dream, CMS 2607, GRP A2/A4 or the Odyssey remake: guess what? Not one of them has built-in reverb/delay.

      good old vintage synths were used with effects because they had no built in effects.
      The music made with them needed the effects.
      All the pionneers of the 70's have used effects with their synths, even if it is legends synths.

    Synths need effects if you don't know how to use a synth

    That lame ARPeggio is not the best way to make your point , it's pretty much the opposite : add 1000$ worth of effects on a shitty sound and it still sounds lame .... every time you try to add the Big Sky it is way too much : this is the first time I hear somebody making a BigSky sound like crap , also the NUX kinda sounds like shit to me
    but I use only vintage effects ,synths and mixers , tape decks..... so I'm probably not the right guy to give my opinion on this gear .

    So all your effects are routed in serial? Is that the norm? I'm new to individual fx.. so am wondering what people normally do with them?

      Who cares what people normally do. Synthesizers are for experimenting.
