- This client drove 2,600 miles to have me rehab their R32. We know the R32 is iconic. But like all MK4s it has some issues. In this video we rehab a ton of things to this 100k mile R32 VR6 to get it to Wookies in the Woods. We are replacing a VR6 timing chain, VR6 clutch, VR6 water pump, FULL VR6 exhaust, R32 shifter repair and more!

Even as a Honda guy and having not owned a VW in over 20 years, I must say I enjoy the time and dedication you and other VW enthusiast put into the brand. Car guys respect clean cars regardless of logo.
The main thing that I love about vw is the community and the creativity. It doesn’t matter if it’s an original bug or a brand new electric van the passion is the same and tahr people are some of the nicest you’ve ever met.
Ah the joy of working on a VR6 in a golf, reminds of the good old days...back then I thought it was tight and difficult to work on. But compared to modern cars it's actually not that bad.
This channel always tempts me to get another Audi or VW but then I get in my Japanese car and think of all the usual VAG issues that I’ll never have to deal with on my car. Then I think, “you know what, watching VW videos rather than owning one is good enough to scratch that itch!”
@@blueridge8992 trust me. I’ve always wanted a big bumper cabriolet. Hell any a2 really. But with 2 civics and a Lexus RC, I don’t really have the space
Never understood the VW vs Honda 'conflict'. Both brands are cool and have their unique models. I'm a german guy but love Hondas too.
Incredible how it seem you like those R32 and know everything on them. Cool to see people with the same passion.
Will be at the Dragon in October with GTR enthusiasts from the Chicago area where my son lives. He's bringing his '17 GTR with 600+HP and I'm bringing my stock '23 GTR (warranty!). I know you and the VW crowd had fun, hope we have the same. Great video, you spoil us you know, it brings a smile to see when one goes up for viewing, thank you.
MK4 GTI 337/20th/GLI 1.8T/R32 all had rear vented rotors
I’d love to know how you did the front to rear bushing without dropping the shifter box. I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me.
Pretty in pink? Suits you Charles!!! hahahahahahaha........
im a tech in newfoundland and watching u take this thing apart with a small cordless tq gun is upseting me. id never get away with that here unless with was less then 3 years old
The amount of work that goes into these videos is insane. Enjoy and respect it alot!
Thank you!
Fun fact about Alberta and snow...I lived there for 5 years in the '90s...they don't use much if at all any salt, they lay down aggregate on the road for traction over salt...it works better however it can be a bear with glass some times.
This is because it is often cold enough for long enough that salt will no longer melt ice on the road and be ineffective.
Any Albertan knows, a cracked & chipped windshield, is a new windshield...
@dumbestoyster hail yeah brother
In recent years they've started using salt brine on the highways. I'd really like them to reverse that decision....
Aluminum pan cracks when lowered cars hit things, steel bends before it cracks.
mk3 steel pan best thing i did to my mk4 12v VR6
yup
Had a b5s4 I hit a bump that came out of nowhere. Cracked lower and upper pan. Def wish I had a steel pan.
Never fun.
Different brand and engine, but I swapped an aluminum pan for a steel pan on my engine swap for the same exact reason
JET FUEL CANT MELT STEEL BEAMS
Should have ordered your flywheel from Paul so he would have come and installed it.
But then it would have gotten installed upside down 🤣
🤣
Charles, you are the first YT mechanic/car guy that I have seen remove the stickers from the tires. Thanks you! 😂
I’m glad I’m not alone when the sticker tires drive me crazy
Hahaha sticker tires drive me nuts!
The audio quality of the videos must be praised. It struck me at the most random time and it blew my mind how the audio from the recorded video and the audio of the voice-over is almost identical and the transitions are so smooth, that you can rarely tell the difference. Top stuff.
Man. How cool would it be to be the owner of this car watching this video? Y'all have fun at Wookies!
It's always satisfying to see an R taken care of properly, especially when I keep tabs on dismantlers (for parts, just in case) who seem to be parting/junking them on a weekly basis (exaggeration but it's frequent)
The O-rings for the bevel box are standard metric sized o-rings. (13.5X3.5), (20X3.15) and (68X2.5). Next time ya'll are in Knoxville area, let me know. I've got beer, pinball, choco lab and if needed 2 guest bedrooms.
Thank you for this!! Installing my bevel box this weekend and was thinking of ordering a viton rubber. Rubber type matter much?
We absolutely love rosstech
O RINGS= the carwizard buys a/c o rings and uses these o rings for everything, they last a lot longer, and yes they are a particular brand.
Charles has best videos because he knows how to pace things!
Awesome video once again, any R32 content, especially something as extensive as this one we cannot get enough of. What should R32 owner's with low mileage cars buy now that will be needed later? Since you said things are harder and harder to find, I'd like to buy now before parts are all gone. It would be great if you could make a short list of essentials that are still in stock today but you know will be gone.
Even thought I’m terrified to open the bonnet on my MK5, I love your videos, they are the best.
Thank you!!!
I'm from Alberta, I was surprise to see someone down there from here. Not much rust here, we use sand and small rocks on the road for traction in the winter.
Not much rust here is a blatant lie. Yes we don’t use salt for the most part, but rust is still a huge problem on a lot of cars.
So much rust in Alberta lmao 🤡
@@nicolamontori Your funny, I've got a few old vehicles with no rust.
@@homeguy4 Then you might be lucky but look around yourself, most vehicles are rotting away and more than anything, the parts with the most rust are the ones you can't see
Have the same headlights with angel eyes on my mk4.
Im always thinking if it was a stupid idea or not get a mk4 R32 back in 2014 wen i got the driving icence when only cost 7,5K €... Nowadays are worth the double with double kms in Spain...
Also would be nice if you did a video on bolting up the r32 transmission and a more detail service on the r32 bevel box
We need a The car care nut type of series tha explain how to maintain ur volkswagon
Great video man, and awesome to see it at WITW. It was definitely nice to see and the owner (McKay) is super cool too! A lot of work done, but those new engine mounts at 36:30 .. whoa ... engine hardly moved when you rev'ed it.
I'm from smalltown Alberta! love watching your videos @humblemechanic! I am wanting to get into mechanics and have been consuming as much automotive content that I can and your videos have been SO helpful! I am thinking about going the apprenticeship route and then maybe going to college but want to get my foot in the door ASAP and see that as the only route being that I am still in high school. Keep on making awesome content!
Hi, I am glad to still see mk4 golf on your channel, even tho I don't have R32, it is a plesure watching it.
For people that lower mk4's to ground, try engine mount spacers, i had problems with inner cv joint breaking and engine mount spacers helped a ton.
Keep up the good work :D
Wow EIP parts, that really takes a guy back. I still wonder what happened to Russ from Dubcorp/Raderwerks Tan EIP Stg 1 Bora R conversion car that started life a TR cloth car and was torn apart with like 600 miles.
I have the 1.8turbo engine ,and 4door car ,now cant find spare parts oem the factory stop making parts i mean interior parts in the internet some find from china and the mechanical parts all from factories from east europe and turkey ,cause i live Greece .This is difficult to fix one car 20 almost years without genuine parts at least here in europe ,i dont know in Usa what happen!Always like this golfmk4 R32 ,is my dream car!But ....!!!I love ur work on vw golf mk4 if i was in usa and had mk4 i came to u to fix it!Love from Greece!
25:22 measure and purchase replacement o-rings from McMaster-Carr
Gruven Parts sells machined aluminum fuel line holders. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
They make great stuff!!!
So what your saying is all we have to do is drive to you and you'll do chains/clutch? Leaving Vegas now 👀🤣
Hahhah it’s like opposite of Paul install
Hey Charles. Great video as always. Really like the honeycomb mat you used for placing removed bolts in recognised order. Very useful.
Regards from the UK.
That seal on the transfer case looks the same as the one you get on the Opel 8Valve water pump. If you can give me the measurements, i have a brand new pump. You should be able to get them from Autodoc in Germany or VWSA in south Africa. Also speak to Masterparts and GoldWagen spares in Cape Town they usually have hard to find stuff
@23:00, also 20th/337/25thA.E. Euro 20v has vented rear rotors.
25th A.E. PD (diesel) had solid rear rotors.
He put that oil pan because the 24 valve one. It’s very much lower and it always hits when your car is lowered.
thanks for all the tips, watched all of it
Charles you're the fvkin' man! What an absolute VW gawd tier mechanic. Keep up the good work and have fun at WITW!!!
You sir would make a great advocate for the church of satan... sorry I mean volkswagen, your talent makes such an in depth service and upgrade seem straightforward and fun to do. That car looks awesome as well, but I shall not be tempted to work on a car with such an insidious timing chain design. Perhaps I could own one that has that already done.... oh no.. I must go pray now
I don’t have an R32 (wish I did) but still love watching this stuff.
My thing is, if you’re gonna wrap the car, why choose Pink? Was it cheaper or something? Lol
Humble mechanic how about the same video also on the Mk4 golf gti 1.8t awp also not enough love for it sure you also have subscribers who have them
Thanks
Western provinces cars are actually waaaay much better rust wise. Ontario is the worst, we use so much salt is unbelievable. Which cams did you use Charles, BTW?
Also regarding the coolant pipe. URO parts sells a cast aluminum piece that’s under $30. It made it through wookies when I made the trip from Texas is 2023.
Just measure the o ring and you will propably find enough replacements. That's what we do at our company and unless it's a really high temp o ring like for a watercooled exhaust we always find them.
Just posted to measure and check McMaster, so seconding your comment. Hopefully to move it higher in the views.
To bad you don't work on Toyota's. My late cousin gave me his father's 2000 Camry LE 4 cylinder and boy does it need work. I mean it still runs but it need a lot of repairs. I just think the Camry wasn't maintained properly. I'm trying to undo what they didn't do. I can do small repairs to the Camry but not major repairs. I also want to make the Camry more sporty. Yeah I know everyone is telling me it's a family car. I have one thing to say to that. It's my car I'll do what I want with it. I love watching your videos.
Charles fixed up a Camry once, he was surprised at how easy it was lol... Almost like it is not designed to anger technicians unlike VWs. 😂
I actually have a question. My buddy has a 08 GTI that he's had since new and wants to sell to me. He's been driving it since purchase and now has 280k (American). Is it worth buying? He's only asking $3gs and he's kept it up to date on maintenance (so he says). Also, doing a awd swap a major pain to do for that series GTI? I've never owned a German car and I am mechanically oriented to an extent.
His buddy at DAP has done the AWD drive swap and its not worth it unless youre into self-harm lmao.... I love my 07 GTI, just replaced the stock Turbo with a Shuenk K03+, and almost all the plastic parts attached to the engine were dry/ cracking (car from Arizona) so Ive ordered it all and on Monday I get to put it all back together!
@@moss550M How's the turning when going fast with FWD?
@@Veldkamp88 I havent visited the local track (PPIR in Colorado) with it yet but on street turns its okay, some torque steer/ spinning the tires if you give it too much on Stage 2, but still very fun
@@Veldkamp88 A 08 Civic Si will have a stock LSD which will make for better corner exits than the Rabbit.
34:46 Haven't been a part of the VW community since my MKII Jetta back in teh early 2000's but wow, people are still doing the chopped-car-trailer thing? I love it!
Funny thing about that chopped car trailer guy that you catch a glimpse of in this video. He’s another UA-camr. I just saw a couple videos of him fixing and building it before WITW about 2 weeks ago.
Pure coincidence that probably the first shot of actual WITW Charles captures him on video.
Great job and good luck on all the work you’ve done and will do. You really are like a living vw service manual. Having worked at a vw dealer as a tech for just over a year, I know they have the wackiest procedures sometimes.(I’m sure he doesn’t necessarily know it all of the top, and just looks up certain things between shots or whatever, but still extremely knowledgeable and experienced.)
When you were going through the oh and while we're here. It reminded me of when I had my mk3 Vr6 GTI redone last year.... Feels like everything got touched.
One of the best sounds…. Wish I could have you give my 04 GLI some love. Stage II APR.
Charles, this video is so sophisticated great done.
Can't get enough from your work.
Have a great time.
Thank you!
I freaking love the way those sound
Wookies was sick!! It was 1st time down. After driving the dragon and the surrounding roads.. my local roads don't scratch my itch anymore. I'll have to drive recklessly fast to get even close to the same kind of excitement. Hopefully next year I'll be able to stay the whole weekend.🤙
Haha once you go you get hooked. Thats what happen to me in 2015 or 2016
I've been on the Mazdaspeed platform for over 10 years, I'd totally jump ship to this platform if I had shop like yours nearby to do all the work.
Men you really are humble because this man is a living repair manual I am not a mechanic but would be scared of doing VW stuff, happy to see the videos and make me a bit more confident in case I need to do something
Looks like an Easter egg. I approve.
33:21 looks like there is a missing bolt on the that drive shaft.
Alberta is the least rustiest place in Canada. No ocean and too cold to bother putting salt on the roads
Was about to say thats not very rusty at all
Once again, great content. ❤
Thanks for this informative video, great workmanship and I love the glorious sound of the r32
Charles, I am here in central NC near Charlotte. Would you be interested in walnut blasting for the channel and a fee of course my 19 Alltrack SEL with 60k miles. I want someone I can absolutely trust to do the work. I am the local who reached out about doing coding on my 23 Arteon SEL Premium R line. I sold the Arteon unfortunately, went dark side. Ordered 24 BMW M4 Competition XDrive. My 19 Alltrack SEL is a prime candidate for easy video. I picked it up in 19 CPO with 6k miles. All services have been completed on time as scheduled at VW South Charlotte. Super clean well taken care of clean car. No accidents, damage, paint work or modifications ever. I have coded with OBDELEVEN, things like active lane centering and other convince features. You may want to do additional coding on Alltrack SEL as part of a video as well, I am good with that also.
😂. First statement was the most important!
This was at least a 40-50 hour job. Always great R32 content, Charles. Thanks.
Stavbuilt is making the best billet crackpipes right now
Do you have any tips for separating the rear axle shafts from the rear diff? Unless there’s something I’m missing besides the bolts on the flanges, mine seem stuck.
den ser fandme godt ud i den farve
Mr Charles, I couldn’t make Wookies this year, but it’s my goal to go and shake your hand. Your videos taught me everything I know today and I want to say thank you. Rebuilt so much watching your videos (and Pauly of course)
Have fun hopefully I see you next year!
Alberta doesn't use a lot of salt, if any at all. They use.... rocks.... You read that right. They put gravel on the road for grip.... Lots of windshield replacements.
My OCD would kill me while working on an older dirty engine bay like that. I'd need to spray down and clean EVERYTHING!
Me, doing a timing belt on my Honda V6, being grateful I'm not working on a VW VR6 anymore, but watching this while I work just for the nostalgia.
These are my favourite videos on yt maintenance and mods Ty HM
the eip short shifter is the wildest part of this video lmao
Fantastic video detailed, informative and will help us keep these soon to be classics on the road!
Not gonna lie, the ONLY way I've been able to prevent a coolant leak from there is with RTV.
32:57 I can't believe how good Liqui Moly MOS2 improves manual transmission feel. It's like butter.
Oil additive doing good job 👌
OH god. I was eating lunch when you cut open that engine mount.
Based off of the color scheme and the amount of money put into maintenancing this car, I can only imagine it’s sponsored by MrBeast
Keep posting videos like this really good content watched everything
Didn't you once have a purple vr6 mk3? I saw the vid but can't remember you doing something to it.
Is it doable to do cams without taking the gearbox off? Just did my chains this year and would like to put cams in in the near future
Brilliant channel but Noooooo to the pink 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Customer car. “Customer is always right, in matters of taste”
Atta boy Charles! Nicely done! Do those mk4 R32 have launch control?
I love these long videos with all the work shown and explained. Nothing better than watching a master at work lol
Not a bad way to spend $10k before a week in the dragon lol great job as always charles
The MkIV R32 is my personal fav ❤️ And I don’t hate the pink
As a kid of the 80's I absolutely love these colors.
The wrong oil pan probably has something to do with the oil drain plug having made contact with the driving surface 😂
I still get a chuckle seeing you use a bent valve as a transmission-holder-upper tool. When life gives you bent valves...
I need the link for that blue bolt organizer! What is that?!
boltster.com/collections/frontpage/products/original-boltster™-bolt-and-fastener-organizer
I love the sound of R32 engine, just can't explain the feeling.
@ 34:55 That's my Black Mk7 R with Mk7 GTI Wheels 😂😂
Nice!!!!
As I’ve been stupid (or sensible🤷♂️🤣) and bought a V6 4Motion blind and had it delivered to me🤦🏼♂️🤣 with a supposed timing chain issue… yeah my ass engine light on… AND they’d recently had to replace the sump from something hitting it… yeah found the problem very quickly, knackerred bottom end now after a bit of a rev for a laugh has seized which I suspected bottom end anyway, so have a good engine and doing chains etc and everything possible!!!!!
Dude not sure if available in the USA however check out VW classic parts, I’m lucky and in Europe and trust me it’s amazingly good and now you know where all these rare NLA parts come from on eBay!!!!!
PS cracking channel dude, I’ve worked in the motor trade for 30 odd years at main dealers but you are my go to VR guy right now!!!! 😂😂😂😂
And I’m not looking forward to it at all!🙈🤣
Owner probably spent around 10k keeping this piece of art on the road
that pink is awesome
That car needs to have the Jazz (design) graphics added to it! They'd go great with the paint job and those calipers!
Does anyone know the brand of the brace that was installed at 37:32 ??
OCDEURO Rear Body Brace 👌🏽
They use a lot of sand up in Canada versus salt that's why the cars are in a bit better shape
I own a focus st and still watch all your videos 😂
🙏🙏🙏🙏
anyone else think that it was just a badly sun damaged red car
This is real pink. Not tornado pink 🤣
Watching Charles always makes me want to go out and work on my Golf
The intake manifold alone would make me wanna pull this motor. That looked like a nightmare
