Imagine BMD does this for the 17k as well. I imagine it would be around $10-20k vs $30k further putting them ahead in the competition as well as in innovation and cost. Completely different cameras for different uses, in my opinion. The BM 12k is an amazing camera, no doubt, but it's a BEAST that requires huge batteries and a RAW workflow. It's gonna be crazy HEAVY. The C400 is tiny, super lightweight, takes tiny batteries and is extremely power efficient, has 10 stops of ND and can shoot in both Raw and XFAVC for easier files to edit with in post. It also has crazy good autofocus. It's more designed for a run-n-gun, documentary style production. I think the 12K likely has the better image quality, but I definitely would not want to run around handholding the BM for 12 hours a day.

Thanks for explaining this release. I would certainly purchase this Cine 12k LF body over the Pyxis, however, I don't think this release is a cause for regret to Pyxis owners . This is a very strategic offering of a high-end camera modification to leverage off of existing equipment accessories of cameras of the URSA and Pyxis lines, thus creating an entry price point into a cutting-edge production body without the higher cost of the version fully rigged-out Cine 12K with BMD accessories. This modified version will be an incentive for users to stay loyal to the BMD ecosystem. If one was considering the Cine 12k LF fully rigged out as a likely future camera, this LF body version will probably cause many to pull the trigger a lot sooner.

My biggest concern IS the fact that this is a 12K sensor. I never have a need for more than 4K. 4K gives me plenty of room to punch in a bit without noticeably degrading the resolution. Instead, I would rather have larger photo sites for a better quality image. The resolution race is a race to the bottom IMHO.

Hey Flo, wild this got announced right after Arri released a lower tier Alexa 35. Even though the 12K has not been out for so long. I guess in somes ways a silmilar idea though with this leaving out some hardware options I think it makes for an exciting proposition. Maybe more so than the Pyxis I would consider the Pyxis' greatest weakness is not having NDs Though the 12Ks weakness is maybe not having a 6K option which sounds crazy but I would rather have 6k than 8k I am not sure how well my computer would handle that and the amount of data you'd be churning out. With the C200 I am already shooting like 1TB per wedding so the idea to shoot maybe 2 would be hard to swallow though maybe compression is better in BRAW. Though I did watch Team 2 Films video on the 12K LF and they went into great detail about the sensors tech and it was super interesting on how it pixel bins without losing qaulity and maintains the full LF sensor in 8k and 4k and the image is outstanding. I think this will be good for BMD. But I honestly think there biggest struggles with cameras is on one side is Canon and Sony and the other side is Arri and RED and they sort of sit some where in the middle without as clear of a purpose and you can say they're just the cheap option now. All of this said I think I'd end up with the Pyxis if any but not havign Internal NDs kills it for me and my work. But this 12k is pretty wild what it will do for VFXs houses and workflows is going to be wild.

12k isn’t the important thing here but the quality you get in 8 and 4 is.
As someone that shoots of a lot of outdoors and footage for licensing 6 and 8 make a difference.

I think the toughest part about this camera is that there isn’t a ton of professional work online that highlights the camera in multiple production environments. The work that you do is great, I’m a big fan of your images - but the work is quite niche in the grand scheme of things.
I would love to see high quality and high effort short films, music videos, and commercials (real or spec) that were shot with the 12K, but there aren’t much on display, which leaves me skeptical. A lot of the work that I do see online that’s made with this camera is sort of… Underwhelming? And that’s not a direct fault of the camera, but it could say something about the audience who it caters to.
When Sony releases their cinema cameras, they give them to talented DP’s who make short films that SHOW the type of result that you could achieve with the camera. I still think about “At The Motel” from the Burano launch.
The 4K and 6K’s are great owner/operator cameras that are under $3K. They are made for solo operators, which is great. But the 12K Body pricepoint directly competes with the FX6, which has a fraction of the resolution but 10X the reputation. I have rented my friends FX6’s, and my friends have rented my FX30 and Komodo (Surpisingly, I’ve probably made the entire value of the Komodo back in rentals)… But I’ve never heard of someone seeking out and renting a 4K/6K/12K for a professional, funded project.
Very low budget short films? Sure. But Anything with an actual budget? No.
And then for $15K for the other kit, you’re $5K away from buying an Alexa Mini or Sony Venice on a good day, and you might be able to score a camera with high hours for $15K on a great day. Those are two cameras that you could easily rent for $1000/day…
So, what are we left with? A $15K camera that’s amazing on paper, but isn’t being used by the industry, and likely will not rent on any major productions. That, my friends, sounds like a sick tool for a fraction of the owners and a very expensive toy for the majority.
I’m looking at buying a Venice this year, and it’s going to cost me a pretty penny - and I would love to go with something like the 12K LF, but it just seems like it has incredibly low potential to get used in the environments that I’m working in.

Thank you for the feedback on my work!!
I think this new price point will get more people into it so we should see more diverse work and I personally hope to use it asap as well :).
I do understand what you mean though.

I didn't read everything yet, but I understand your sentiment. I would say try and rent it first and see what you think it looks like. If you search online, there are quite a few people who have already used it in studio and uncontroled environments and of course it looks phenomenal! Only Alexa's top cameras can compete, but at triple the price or more. If you're not looking to go to rental route, I would highly recommend this camera over the Venice simply because you can be invest what you saved on the gear that will help move the line more significantly than purchasing the Venice over this.

If it only had an l-mount 🤔❤

The Pyxis is there for that. L is still aimed at mirrorless so it makes sense that the Ursa Cine are PL or EF.

@@OfTwoLands Well, it would be innovative (with sony opening) to have the l-mount, not only for pleasure of adaptation, but also for full electronic control over lenses. The pyxis sensor is by far worse than this. 🤔 Or put the 12K LF Sensor into an l-mount-pyxi - that would be it❣️

Yes I know it's Netflix approved. Yes I know black magic has excellent color science. But I don't trust this ...its too much cheeper than the competition for the price!

😂 ok. BM have always been much cheaper than the competition and they punch way above their weight!

I think a lot of what makes Blackmagic more affordable compared to, say, a Sony, is no continuous autofocus and the lack of IBIS. Which appears to be true for this body as well. I'm really surprised BM hasn't at least implemented continuous autofocus yet. Obviously it isn't always needed / desired, but it seems like it would be a software side fix and folks who don't want to utilize it can just turn it off. There are certainly situations where I wish I had the option on my 6K. I've been using a Lidar solution as a result, but it's not as reliable.
