I spent so long trying to find someone to teach me how to clean my canister filter… I have a similar one but a different brand and couldn’t find a video anywhere… thank you so much!! My canister filter is working properly again
You should add more filter foams. Your 1st and second bottom baskets are nearly empty. They can fit a lot more and do much more filtration for you. I fill mine up and it does a better job IMO. I use 1 coarse, and 2 medium foams in the bottom tray. Then I fill up the second tray with fine floss pads. My 3rd and 4th tray are all bio-media.
I had an fx6 on the other side of this tank which contained more sponges, fine filter media etc. If I didn’t have that, I would agree with you for sure👍🏻 thanks for watching mate
Fantastic video, very helpful for beginners, as we've all been, im probably not the 1st and wont be the last person to take there canister to the sink and wash it all clean with tap water then thinkin why is my cloudy water not clearing up, brilliant video, do you think you could do one on the fx6 for us all, keep up the fantastic work you're doing👌👌👌👍🏴
I've had the SunSun for a few months - love it. Have been doing everything except the impeller which I will add to my routine. My SunSun however has started giving me these long continuous beeps for 1-2 minutes at a time. Any ideas what that would be?
Sean Meister thanks mate👍🏻 & it’s been a great filter for me! I’ve had it about 4 years now & it’s done really well. Right now I’m using it for the 125 along with the fx6 I have. Seems to be a good combo for this size tank! Thanks for checking this one out & commenting Sean👍🏻
@@cichlidscapeoh good to know...I am thinking about getting one of their smaller canister filters so this helps. Thanks for sharing and responding to me!
Hello, In my 90 gallon tank with 12 discus and the same SUN-SUN 304B Canister filter, how regular do you recommend that I clean my canister filter? Thanks.
Thanks for checking out the video Richard. With discus I would clean it out once every few months if that’s the only filtration you are using. Having said that it depends on how much your feeding etc. Best way to know is to test to water you know. If your doing water changes but your nitrates aren’t really going down....you know it’s the **** in the filter😂👍🏻
Have you run a canister filter to multiple tanks? I have a 20 long and two 10 gallons. I'm considering a large canister for better water filtration that services all three tanks. Any thoughts on that?
It’s not meant to. If bubbles are coming out of the filter outtake you have air trapped in the canister housing. Just rock the canister from side to side. That’ll help the air get unstuck. Hope that works👍🏻
Even with expensive canister filters like the Oase biomaster 850 there's issues of trapped air inside the canister filter which makes gurgling and hissing sounds from the outlet pipes. So i think it's just a common issue with all canister filters , irrespectiveof their price difference.
Brandon Calk I use both safe & seachem lake salt. It was probably that which you saw me adding👍🏻 I use the recommended amount of safe for the 125. Enough for the chlorine in the tap water as I don’t have chloramines or anything more sinister in my tap water👍🏻 thanks for checking this video out Brandon
@@cichlidscape I have well water and have trace amounts of ammonia in my tap. I recently got some safe but have been terrified to use it in fear of under dosing or over dosing. I have always used prime to treat my water while filling the tank. Will safe neutralize the ammonia like prime does or is it best to just stick with prime?
Brandon Calk yeah safe will do that too. Just add the recommended amount to neutralize the ammonia too & you’ll be golden👍🏻 when you do that just be sure to have plenty of surface agitation & there has exchange in the tank. Safe has been known to strip o2 from the water if you really overdose it! Never experienced it myself but I just wanted to mention that & making you aware of it👍🏻
@@cichlidscape awesome, thanks for all the helpful info. And love your tank. I have an issue with over stocking my tank because every fish is a "must have" fish lol. I followed you on Instagram. Maybe can check out my tank too
Arvid Johansson they do as there’s surface area to them, even submerged in water👍🏻 not as good as something like bio-home but they have some impact I’m sure. Thanks for checking out this video my friend!
@@cichlidscape I have 4L off them laying around. Might as well through them in then :) Who does not like to look at how other people maintain their tank. Before (3 years ago) I learnt from community I used to use 10 liter buckets. It took me hours. It still takes an hour but I only have to put in around 10 minutes of work.
Arvid Johansson May as well! For sure! & learning from people definitely helps! Even if they don’t do things perfectly you can always learn from a few things they do👍🏻
Jays African Cichlids not at all mate👍🏻 it’s a really good product to utilize. Especially in a canister filter I have found👌🏻 thanks for checking out this one! Hope you enjoyed it
Thanks for sharing. Do you have any ideas about how to drain the cannister filter of standing water BEFORE moving it for cleaning? I have a large SunSun and I love the performance. But it is so heavy when it is full of water and the media baskets that I just can't lift it. UGH. The filter is in a cabinet below the tank, so it's only a few inches above ground level. Thanks again for taking the time to film and post this. It's always interesting to see what types of media folks use for their aquatic friends' homes.
Does anyone have the part number for the top tray. I need one, as mine was missing when it was given to me "used". Other than that it works great other than the annoying rattle that never seems to go away.
What they really mean is don’t change to all new media at one time because you’re throwing out too much bb at one time. If you changing media do it little at a time between water changes. You have to use tank water to rinse the media without killing beneficial bacteria and that’s done during water changes.
I have both brand but fluval fx6 holds more media and pump is a lot stronger. The only reason why people buying sun sun brand cause of the cost and fx6 cost 3x more but if your patient then get the fx6. If your patient every year fx6 is on sale for around $120-180 and its a better quality build then this one. Most people go with sun sun cause its decent and cheaper than eheim / fluval but be patient and get the fx6 when its on sale. I do agree if fx6 never goes on sale then i would buy the sun sun brand but when its on sale why buy the sun sun brand lol
Take a look at multiple channels, online articles etc, that is not advised unless you are on well water. Feel free to do this yourself but it’s not advised for the most part. It just isn’t worth the risk imo👍🏻
Geez, 2 months...if I leave my Fx5 without a prefilter for a week it gets a lot dirtier than that... Maybe your flow in the tank wasn't that great and it doesn't gather much of the muck off the floor?!

Would it be better to use silicone grease than Vaseline to minimize degradation of the O-ring?
Great filter clean buddy do like the sun sun 👍👍

Do you have wavemakers on this tank to help pick up the crap? Or is the intake in the corner getting it all? Cheers
Is it suitable for a 45 gallon aquarium or is it too strong?
Beautifull job

For one, it has a uv. These are serious filters. I still am partial to a wet/dry sump though
I turned everything off properly and when i opened the clips water exploded everywhere.
