  • Ryan Leidner Architecture thoughtfully renovates a bygone California house into a modern home that is intrinsically connected to its surrounding landscape by incorporating lush greenery into the interior spaces. Imbued with a tangible sense of transparency, Twin Gable House proposes a more outward, open way of living.
Located in Sunnyvale, a suburban neighbourhood 45 minutes south of San Francisco, Twin Gable House sits within a streetscape dominated by single-level, Eichler family homes. The renovation aspired to rejuvenate the midcentury modern-style California house by injecting high design into its somewhat simple, suburban façade. While most Eichler homes boast flat ceilings, this house benefited from having a twin-gable shape that brings height and openness, undoubtedly setting the tone for the design and direction of the renovation.
There is an immediate sense of the outdoors existing within the California house - upon entering through the front door into the atrium space, one is met with an interior garden. Rejecting the idea that homes are a place to be lived inwardly, the outdoor connection continues throughout the home. The California house is enveloped in a lush garden, incorporating the landscape into every interior space.
In this sense, one of the key features of the California house is the garden. The clients wanted to feel like there was lush greenery constantly surrounding them, as if the home is sitting within a garden whilst feeling somewhat detached from the sidewalk. To achieve this, Stephens Design Studio used sliding plains of concrete bands that have plants surrounding them so they appear disguised within the landscape. The organisation of the plantings is very loose, and whilst there is a lot of rhythm and repetition, there is also a little bit of chaos in the way the plants interact.
Light filters throughout, creating an even deeper connection to the outdoors. The California house welcomes light at every possibility, and the play of light throughout the day means the house always feels dynamic. The sun enters and shifts during the day as it filters through branches and bounces off white walls and white-panelled high ceilings.
Twin Gable House innovatively blurs the line between the indoors and the outdoors. The subsequent feeling of transparency means the space is dynamic yet robust, warm yet modern - providing a palpable sense of freedom and vitality to the family living there.

Loved the integrated duality, on this project, so much. It's so well aligned and achieved to the point of not being obvious if it was rather a house built inside a garden or a garden built inside and around the house. A genuine *sigh* of love from me to you, beautiful nature in the house in the nature.

I love the incorporation of nature into the house, how airy and open it feels and how intimate at the sometime. One issue is that, to me, it feels too white. It has white wood ceilings and beams, white walls and light grey floors. I wonder how it would look like with natural wood ceiling vs. white-painted one? maybe it's deviating too much from the original mid-century design?

Unfortunately this video is falling back into the same pattern of not showing the actual architecture of this structure. The last few videos seemed to have made the conscious choice to show more of the homes spaces and transitions and thankfully some drone footage to show neighborhood or topographic context. This seems more like a commercial for some type of picket fence stereotypic American lifestyle. Please put more emphasis on the architecture and not a 100 percent overly romanticized propaganda short films. Don’t want to be harsh because the production value is good but seems extremely surface driven.

I think what is potentially missing is arguably the foundation of design literacy: the FLOOR PLAN. It would be so beneficial to ground and orient the viewer to the concept. The visuals would then articulate and reinforce what the goals were. Shots of bark and plants doesn’t help understand the indoor outdoor connection but a plan showing the courtyard and all the openings would. You raise a good question about how one might think they are communicating design and how design is actually communicated. If we reflect and ask ‘What is the take away here? What did this content reveal or demonstrate about successful design? What is going to make me remember this piece of architecture?” I’m not sure I could respond with anything more in depth than ‘courtyards are good?’. 🤷🏻‍♀️ They didn’t speak about zero thresholding, or continuity of materiality between inside or outside, or the size of the openings, or view lines, or how the courtyard and backyard relate etc. etc. and relate it back to the plan… Never Too Small do a great job of showing how the architecture works, you might enjoy their channel.

The choice of having the primary bathroom be so transparent to the inner courtyard, and thus all the public spaces of the house, is really weird to me. I get wanting to open the bathroom into the space, but unless you live alone the lack of privacy would just be too weird to me.

Sunnyvale native here. Raised in an Eichler. Why was Eichler never mentioned, student of FLW. Nor did you mention that these homes are historically protected and can only be modified in a limited way. This video implies you designed this house. This is a tract home Eichler. Kind of implied taking credit for Eichler design.

I usually enjoy these videos, but there were too many close up shots here that I couldn't get a feel for anything the floor plan in this house does. I kept thinking they would close-up a paper clip. If there is a site with the house featured, I would like to see it because the house seems like something I would like, outside of the close-ups on the plants, the kids toys. Oh and the woman's voice was so off-putting I had to turn off the sound, then when it got to the kid on the patio chair, I gave up.
