California House With A Lush Internal Garden Atrium (House Tour)

- Ryan Leidner Architecture thoughtfully renovates a bygone California house into a modern home that is intrinsically connected to its surrounding landscape by incorporating lush greenery into the interior spaces. Imbued with a tangible sense of transparency, Twin Gable House proposes a more outward, open way of living.
Located in Sunnyvale, a suburban neighbourhood 45 minutes south of San Francisco, Twin Gable House sits within a streetscape dominated by single-level, Eichler family homes. The renovation aspired to rejuvenate the midcentury modern-style California house by injecting high design into its somewhat simple, suburban façade. While most Eichler homes boast flat ceilings, this house benefited from having a twin-gable shape that brings height and openness, undoubtedly setting the tone for the design and direction of the renovation.
There is an immediate sense of the outdoors existing within the California house - upon entering through the front door into the atrium space, one is met with an interior garden. Rejecting the idea that homes are a place to be lived inwardly, the outdoor connection continues throughout the home. The California house is enveloped in a lush garden, incorporating the landscape into every interior space.
In this sense, one of the key features of the California house is the garden. The clients wanted to feel like there was lush greenery constantly surrounding them, as if the home is sitting within a garden whilst feeling somewhat detached from the sidewalk. To achieve this, Stephens Design Studio used sliding plains of concrete bands that have plants surrounding them so they appear disguised within the landscape. The organisation of the plantings is very loose, and whilst there is a lot of rhythm and repetition, there is also a little bit of chaos in the way the plants interact.
Light filters throughout, creating an even deeper connection to the outdoors. The California house welcomes light at every possibility, and the play of light throughout the day means the house always feels dynamic. The sun enters and shifts during the day as it filters through branches and bounces off white walls and white-panelled high ceilings.
Twin Gable House innovatively blurs the line between the indoors and the outdoors. The subsequent feeling of transparency means the space is dynamic yet robust, warm yet modern - providing a palpable sense of freedom and vitality to the family living there.

give the videographer/editor a raise!!! 😍 very beautiful house. Perfection!!!!
I love the effect of entering the front and walking through a garden. Great design and a beautiful house. Lots of natural light.
Every two or three videos, I see my dream house design. I love this channel.
🥰
The Eichler is the quintessential Californian Architecture in my opinion. I have done dozens of as-built drawings of many variations of these homes and they are all spectacular!
@1:14ff, The seamless lines of the tiles running from inside to the outside was a well thought out touch.
Great example of architecture & design functionality meeting family's personality creating what a true home should be in the end.
Just watching this episode made me feel so relaxed, I loved the zoned but open space living
Ive been waiting years for someone to capture this house on video
Can't express enough what a great job you guys do capturing and conveying the feel of these homes, it's so relaxing! ♥️
My favorite here was the garden full of beautiful plants. It really stood out & adds the element of calmness in this home. Thanks Local Project
You are so welcome!
one of my all time favorites! the attention details in architcture landscaping and furninishings is on a modern perfection level!! nice job to the homeowners also!
I dont know that this narration gave as much detail or emphasis to the architecture that I'd like but having said that...
I love the direction of the edit and seeing perspectives from the nature and the liveliness of people through the space.
You guys always deliver incredible visuals of these projects and Im constantly in awe of how you're pioneerring the presentation of architecture videos
Definitely captured the modern home vibe. I feel like you'd have to wear sunglasses inside more often than outside! LOL The entry courtyard is amazing.
Amazing space! It's a feel good home. What a peaceful place for kids to grow up!
The woman's voice fry was so strong that felt as if she didn't even want to be talking at all.
Actually had to stop watching the video because her voice was so annoying. Beautiful house though.
Man, the vocal fry on these two. T.h.e. h.o.u.s.e i.s g.r.e.a.a.a.a.t.
Cool garden/house design.
So beautiful! It’s dream! Bravo 👏🏽
Amazing! Truly made with the heart.
Wow this is so beautiful, the sense of openness and transparency is incredible, and the landscape is amazing, thanks for sharing this with us
Our pleasure Isaac!
Absolutely stunning! What a joyful home
this is a beauty
Really beautiful and cosy house!
Loved the integrated duality, on this project, so much. It's so well aligned and achieved to the point of not being obvious if it was rather a house built inside a garden or a garden built inside and around the house. A genuine *sigh* of love from me to you, beautiful nature in the house in the nature.
The editing in this video is so cool
Great work!
This is a beautiful build. Must be nice to live in an environment that enables an open architecture. Try that in the Midwest or South USA. 😅
I always think the same thing; you couldn't pull that off in southern Alberta, Canada! I love that open air architecture. Guess I need to move to California.
What a stunner. Very well thought out and peaceful.
I love this house so much. Thank you for making this beautiful video! 🙌🙏😍
May god bless this family even more.
The house with it's spaces and gardens is incredible...and then you live in Sunnyvale 😅
Seems like a very happy home
너무 좋아요...
all i want is an indoor garden in my future home
beautiful home but I would feel very anxious at night..
definitivamente este proyecto es mi favorito.😍😍Estoy encantado con el concepto y su estética naturalista. creo que en la modernidad es importante diseñar las casas para que sean santuarios para relajarse y desconectarse de la rutina acelerada de la ciudad.
beautiful home.
Great work as usual. It's lovely to have you in California!
Thank you, it’s good to be here!
I absolutely love this!
I wouldn't mind to see something like this in Canada. 😂
It's beautiful! Loved the Ukrainian flag :)
SUNNYVALE MY HOMEEE ❤
Amazing project. Surprised to see a Ukrainian flag near the house number! 😎
Thank You ... Well Done ...
Love Sunnyvale, love Eichler, good landscaping. But please skip the music, or turn volumn way down.
Прекрасный семейный дом по домашнему уютный дети бегают играют счастливы и это главное спасибо
I want to believe that there is something wrong, because from here it looks so darn perfect.
Hermoso concepto de pensar en las áreas verdes antes que en en el concreto. Mal por the local proyect pues no ves más de la casa, detalles que este parece solo estética y sombras.
Good work, come to Palm Springs !
Coming very soon! 🙂
Amazing
nice house! personally not a fan of the square tiles being all over but other than that it looks great!
謝謝!
Thank you!
I live in sunnyvale!
Would have loved to see some ‘before’ shots
I love the incorporation of nature into the house, how airy and open it feels and how intimate at the sometime. One issue is that, to me, it feels too white. It has white wood ceilings and beams, white walls and light grey floors. I wonder how it would look like with natural wood ceiling vs. white-painted one? maybe it's deviating too much from the original mid-century design?
Lush lady garden indeed
100% сад есть , дома нет , нужен садовник , реклама магазина растений
Stunning, luminous home. I could do without the designer’s California voooocaaal fryyyyyhy…
Great editing and shits on this one!
Psssst! That maple needs more room for its roots.
Love the openness and airy vibe
Unfortunately this video is falling back into the same pattern of not showing the actual architecture of this structure. The last few videos seemed to have made the conscious choice to show more of the homes spaces and transitions and thankfully some drone footage to show neighborhood or topographic context. This seems more like a commercial for some type of picket fence stereotypic American lifestyle. Please put more emphasis on the architecture and not a 100 percent overly romanticized propaganda short films. Don’t want to be harsh because the production value is good but seems extremely surface driven.
Which is what makes The Local Project so good. Each project is unique and captures what the author wants use to see and feel. Brilliant work as always.
I’m in total agreement 👏🏽
All the American videos are just not as heart warming… just my opinion
I think what is potentially missing is arguably the foundation of design literacy: the FLOOR PLAN. It would be so beneficial to ground and orient the viewer to the concept. The visuals would then articulate and reinforce what the goals were. Shots of bark and plants doesn’t help understand the indoor outdoor connection but a plan showing the courtyard and all the openings would. You raise a good question about how one might think they are communicating design and how design is actually communicated. If we reflect and ask ‘What is the take away here? What did this content reveal or demonstrate about successful design? What is going to make me remember this piece of architecture?” I’m not sure I could respond with anything more in depth than ‘courtyards are good?’. 🤷🏻♀️ They didn’t speak about zero thresholding, or continuity of materiality between inside or outside, or the size of the openings, or view lines, or how the courtyard and backyard relate etc. etc. and relate it back to the plan… Never Too Small do a great job of showing how the architecture works, you might enjoy their channel.
I agree I feel like I didn’t get to see the actual house or decor which I really enjoy.
😍
♥♥♥
oooff... that vocal fry
I could not get through their grating voices, turned it off and just watched the images of the interior.
Cute
I love when your editor is on acid!
The choice of having the primary bathroom be so transparent to the inner courtyard, and thus all the public spaces of the house, is really weird to me. I get wanting to open the bathroom into the space, but unless you live alone the lack of privacy would just be too weird to me.
@3:36 is that a maple tree?
The house must have a a lot of echo if I can hear it through the video.
vasadhi, vaipu
bismillah
Noice! Video production is right out there - on the verge of intrusive maybe.
Beautiful house! Watched as much as I could before the vocal fry drove me out.
It seems like your main goal was White paint.
The problem with this property is the small lot it sits on.
The home is good but you should definitely speak from throat.
Hope that toddler doesn’t fall in. No pool gate???
The vocal fry used by both presenters is distracting.
Sunnyvale native here. Raised in an Eichler. Why was Eichler never mentioned, student of FLW. Nor did you mention that these homes are historically protected and can only be modified in a limited way. This video implies you designed this house. This is a tract home Eichler. Kind of implied taking credit for Eichler design.
Surprising to see people let such little kids run by a pool like that.
Too much about the “feeling” of the house. Would love to have seen more about the actual redesign, layout, materials, before/after etc.
Why is everyone on this channel talking like they have a pair of fish in their throats?
that SoCal vocal fry is turned all the way up 😑...
why is she talking like that?
First time in a video I hear both, a female and a male, speaking in vocal fry.
What is wrong with the woman’s voice? Is she alright?
Such a nice house, such an annoying vocal fry!!!
I usually enjoy these videos, but there were too many close up shots here that I couldn't get a feel for anything the floor plan in this house does. I kept thinking they would close-up a paper clip. If there is a site with the house featured, I would like to see it because the house seems like something I would like, outside of the close-ups on the plants, the kids toys. Oh and the woman's voice was so off-putting I had to turn off the sound, then when it got to the kid on the patio chair, I gave up.
I was so excited to see a house in Sunnyvale on this channel - Bay Area native here! The home is beautiful, but I had to stop watching the video. The vocal fry was annoying af. They both sound so pretentious.
The background music on this video sucks. Too bad for the architect.
Saw like... one room. Using 1000 camera tricks.
Not trying to be mean but i think the garden will be a big hassle to maintain.
Her voice really distracts me, I can clearly hear it is forced to go low. Some Americans do that, I don't know why, I guess there must be a sociologic reason.
You couldn't find a worse music to annoy your subscribers within seconds, could you? 😂
Sadly this channel has made the choice of showing homes without actually showing them.
I love the home choices but i wish someone came after them and just gave me a house tour video, so i can understand what im seeing
everything about the house is perfect, except for the lady's made up accent
music bad
What's the point of an atrium? It always looks so goofy
Edit:
Unwatchable due to the cuts every 2 secs. Absolutely nauseating. Stop being so pretentious
That blonde’s affected vocal fry made it unbearable to watch and listen
It was difficult to listen to, sounded painful.
exactly
that woman's voice is so annoying
