  • Having videoed the 'The Cotswold Festival of Steam' the previous weekend I heard that the two West Country class engines, Wadebridge and Wells, were operating the following Saturday - May 30th 2015. Being an admirer of the Bullied Pacifics I visited and shot some library footage for a project that I am planning. I took the opportunity to shoot some scenes for this short video. A bonus was the positioning in the bay platform at Toddington, of the almost complete Merchant Navy class 'Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co.'

Unrebuilt bulleid West Country class locomotives are my absolute favourite class. Beautiful

Excellent video of the Gloucester and Warwickshire Railway (GWR!). My granddaughters live near the track and we go along to wave at the engine drivers and passengers. Great fun.

    Lovely Alan
I've also had a fascination for the Bulleid pacifics all my life. I had the 0-Gauge tinplate 'Golden Arrow' set, then saw my first real one when it stopped at Bath Spa station (believe it or not) when I was a very young trainspotter. Later I used to see them on the Pines Express through Radstock if I was lucky. Of course at the time I didn't appreciate how lucky I was. I guess we all took the classic steam railway for granted until it was gone.

***** What was a Bulleid doing at Bath Spa? How I envy you seeing them on The Pines. I just couldn't resist another day on the GWR with those three Bulleids there. I hope to get over to the SVR for some more magic with Sir Keith and Taw Valley on Friday.
      Cheers Alan

I don't know why the Bulleid appeared at Bath Spa (on the GWR main line for those who don't know) and at the time I was too young to question the event. I do remember it was in spotless condition. Perhaps it was on a special or may be it was part of a loco exchange? It must have been in the mid 1950s I suppose.

Thanks for a really enjoyable video. I know they had their problems, but they are outstandingly handsome engines in either guise, & the romance of the WC names, excellent choices!

I cant decide which for is better rebuilt or unrebuilt !?! What is your preference :)
I know these locos where West Country Class but I have to say Merchant Navy is my favorite class of loco :) ...

I'm a Bullied fan too. I admire the audacity of both the design and getting them built when he did! I'm also a heretic and prefer Jarvis' redesign which I think resulted in the most handsome passenger loco bar none. I have a gauge 1 rebuilt Merchant Navy and it hauls the boat train very nicely in kidney shaped circles around my yard!

My newest favorite of all the British steam locomotives since I first watched Thomas & Friends Season 22. I wonder how much it would cost 2 build a live steam 12 inch gauge replica of the Bulleid Pacific locomotives both rebuilt and unrebuilt and 12 inch gauge railway on a large piece of land.

I went for Wells as I've seen Wadebridge in steam many times before.

GWR Steam Railways My interest was the reverse. I rode behind 'City of Wells' as she was then, many times on the mainline in the 80's and saw her at Llangollen in March but needed footage of Wadebridge. Will have a look at your video shortly. Alan
