You said it - "the beauty of Matteo's delivery". That's the most striking thing as far as I'm concerned. What might appear mechanical in other hands sounds magical in his because his sense of phrasing and dynamics - and his ability to execute them at will - set him apart from all but the greatest. I get the same feeling listening to Matteo's playing as I do listening to Eric Johnson... and that is saying something, since I can't think of any guitarists with a more beautiful sound than Eric J, regardless of whatever style he happens to be playing.
That little bar on the top and between his pickups is his occasional thumb rest. . .Very Very cool ! This young man is already becoming a legend. The guitar world and people who know what talent "really" is will make sure this lad has a career, ,he really is such a talent and I wish him all the success he deserves .
Matteo is one of my favorite players of the modern era. So unique. I love how he mixes his smooth jazz with bluesy hard rock licks. I also love the finger picking. It's always been my favorite way to play.
Saw that video. Al was my guitar hero of the seventies and eighties and with him giving Matteo such high praises, I thought "better check this kid out." No exaggerations and no regrets.
Matteo is now about 23 and he is still studying music, his father was a professional musician. Also Matteo already have a contract with Yamaha and is present at NAAM and other venue to promote their guitars.
Totally agree with you that young players like Matteo needs some Love. As me being a piano guy there are many euro artists that are phenominal that have no notice. Thanks for the post because good music from artist like him needs to be recognized.
I’ve been following Matteo for months now.. his playing is so amazing to listen to, but when you see him playing it, it is a whole new game.. I heard of his playing through Mike Seal , who is another finger style player with the Jeff Sipe Trio... Matteo reminds me of how I felt when I first saw Stanley Jordon play live years ago.. What a future this young man has in front of him.. the guitar is still alive and well..
His right hand technique is from an old classical guitar style that has been used by many Spanish players and is the beginning of the claw and chicken picking style of that the Country players have popularized in recent times. It allows for a very consistent string attack and the facility to play with a lot of string skipping and raking in a seemingly effortless manner. Mind blowing that he is still in the infancy of his musical creativity.
This guy reinvented guitar. This is beyond next level. I was a bit sceptic because of him doing covers. But his own work now on his first album is insane.. And then you just know.... this is unearthly. I really can't recall any guitar player that comes even close to his technique. WITH 3 FINGERPIKKING but making it sound as a pick??? What? his improv boxes, schales, chromatisism, arpeggios..harmonics... creativity, all blended so well together and so clean. F*cking insane man! You know, Tina S can cover music really good, but this is another universe. And he is just 27...
Joe Bonamassa is a great, great musician, a great guitar player with great feeling - which is the most important thing of them all when playing a lead guitar, besides having perfect accuracy and technique. music is a language of emotions, transferred from the musician (and the composer) to the listener. emotions that can't be described in letters and words. directly connected to us, without the need for interpretation. but, this dude is playing in a higher league.
This is the first video of Matteo that I came across and was blown away from the start of the video. I had just discovered him a few years ago. I never knew this guy existed. He definitely has his own style of picking. His father is no slouch on guitar by no means either. I believe his father was his inspiration as is clearly noticeable through his playing. His playing does have an Eric Johnson vibe to it, only because of his clear and precise finger picking that eliminates the pick noise when the strings are struck. Just phenomenal. Watch/Listen to The Chicken, his three piece band. The bass and drummer are equally as talented as Matteo.
3:07 all classical guitarists play without a plectrum 😃 When Alip_Ba_Ta plays fast he uses the nail of his index finger as a plectrum. Mancuso uses the flamenco technique or more simply the electric bass technique

Matteo started playing because of his father. He was a little kid, so seein' his dad playing fingerstyle thought that was the way to play guitar. He found out later that guitar can be played with a pick: so he simply didn't know :D Anyway, he developed his own fingering technique: the "bass" one is for fast runs on close strings, while the other one opens new way to approach sweeping since he can selectively string skip (at least on his own words). Still waiting for his debut album which should be on the way: never enjoyed a "jazzy" player as much as Matteo
The take away for me is to use your technical prowess as a means to enhance the overall musical quality or phrasing as opposed to some stand alone pyrotechnics display that we see all too often on youtube. Matteo has that unique ability to still make music in spite of his jaw dropping technique. His interpretations are super clean, creative, awe inspiring, but I still feel like I can groove and tap my feet to it all.

I don't know about sounding like Eric Johnson. He sounds like Robben Ford to me. He mentioned in another video that he heard Robben Ford and learned his style of playing.

Then he went on to study classical guitar in high school and he said it helped him further develop his right hand technique, even though he didn't like the repertoire, and he is currently attending conservatory studying jazz guitar.
This kid plays like anyone he thinks about. Like a computer. He can't be put into one category. He's himself and whoever else he wants to sound like on a thought. Amazing.
@@alward5678 you’re right to a large degree. He is a technical marvel right now but he hasn’t developed a complete unique musical language like Allan did. First of all you probably mean grammy and not emmy, and second of all who the hell cares about grammy's? Cardi B has a grammy for god's sake. And just because eric johnson has had a long career nobody can compete with him? And a 'bunch of succesful albums' what does that even mean? I agree that matteo could put out some original work but why would the populairity of his work have any effect on how good he is?
@@petezah4597 Well spoken. I don’t think age is any prerequisite of greatness, and the point is that Matteo is at a level beyond virtually any guitarist… ever. The fact that he is playing like this in his late teens/early twenties just makes it seem inevitable that he will have an excellent career.
@@MrKittles1123 unfortunately I'm not convinced that his playing being like this in his early twenties makes it inevitable that he will have an excellent career, look at holdsworth, he died poor and couldn't really get any gigs but maybe youtube will provide him some more sustainibility than holdsworth, I surely hope so
@@petezah4597 That’s honestly a very good point. I think that part of Holdsworth’s problem was being so far ahead of his time, as well as playing a style of music that didn’t have the type of online clout it does today, especially in his wake. Only time will tell! But if nothing else, Matteo certainly has one hell of a good start going for himself considering he’s a fusion player.
To play devil's advocate - try finding a video of him playing without the sock tied on the 1st fret. What happens when you pluck two or three strings but only fret one of them using the strap/sock? He is a remarkable guitarist - highly skilled and fun to listen to.
You are right, but I would consider it a disadvantage of the technique rather than a flaw with the player. By hand picking he's developed the ability to execute insane licks with a stunning precision and taste, I guess having to use a fret wrap is a very acceptable compromise. BTW, if you check some of his posts he can do without if he plays clean, though he totally needs it for distortion.
I think we should get over the age vs speed syndrome...there were and are many players of young age in all genres and instruments who are supreme virtuosos...but the most important thing is are you musical and individual and unique that you will be remembered. Not taking anything away from his magnificent technique and musicality because well done to him for working hard at achieving such a hight standard but I still prefer players like Bill Frisell because as good as this is I shutoff in less than a minute whereas players with very original melodic phrasing and harmonic invention digs deep into the soul like Bill Frisell playing 'You only live twice' - live at the village vanguard New York, 2016/NY...of course only my opinion...give me the melody
He has all of the mechanics of a 60-year-old dedicated jazz player along with laser-accurate bends, tasty vibrato, and an innate sense of MELODY!!!!!!
The thing is that he doesnt miss a note, smooth and fluently flawless
I would think any guitarist listening to this would be flabbergasted by the sheer beauty of Matteo's delivery.

Only time will tell! But if nothing else, Matteo certainly has one hell of a good start going for himself considering he’s a fusion player.
Pat, John, Larry and Robben peuvent dormir tranquilles. La relève est là.
You know Nick Johnston?
No I do not.
You guys are right. He doesn't need the sock.
His playing makes me reevaluate even using a pick.

Unfortunately, great musicianship is lost on everyone except for other musicians.
He explains why he changes his hands, The thumb is a resting place. I watch this video everyday May 8 2024
I think we should get over the age vs speed syndrome...there were and are many players of young age in all genres and instruments who are supreme virtuosos...but the most important thing is are you musical and individual and unique that you will be remembered.
Good point. Thanks for your feedback!
