Derek was already quite accomplished and you knew he would continue to grow. His slide playing is now so unique and has such an incredible vocal quality to it that he stands alone.

Raphael Rabello's interpretation of "Luiza" is spot on. The song was written by brazilian legend Tom Jobim, world famous for "Girl from Ipanema". The music gained national recognition in Brazil when it was used as the opening title music for soap opera "Brilhante" in 1982. To me "Luiza" is highly emotional, there is a romantic anguish to it that usually moves me to tears if performed with sensibility. This interpretation from Raphael Rabello hits the right spots and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. Yes, I shed some tears while listening. The song has also been interpreted by other brazilian greats such as Chico Buarque.

His phrasing takes a lot of inspiration from gospel singing. His licks are typically more akin to a "vocal run" for that reason. It takes full advantage of the fluid and inherently microtonal nature of slide guitar.

That tremolo technique of Yamashita’s was well-known among mandolinists of the 19th century - only they used the nail of the right hand pinky finger with a pick between the thumb and forefinger. Radon Zenkl has mastered the technique.

What Derek Trucks does with his band...the builds...the hushes...the screaming leads and the harmonies. it's what I call 'crowd control'.. but instead of controlling a crowd with weapons, Derek controls a crowd with his band and his guitar. Truly amazing.

Many people play notes on a guitar. Derek sings those notes. He's the only guitarist I know that makes people tear up when they hear a solo... I don't know what goes through his mind but I'm thankful whatever it is. Have a listen to the version of Midnight in Harlem with Coltrane. The Indian influences are just beautiful.

The Allman Brothers have always been my favorite band. I've seen Derek play many times. IMO, he as the best left hand of any on a guitar. His licks are mind blowing and mind boggling... and I have never seen anyone play so effortlessly and without any emotion. If you watched him playing from the chest up, looks like he's watching a boring tv show. Lol.

I've seen the Yamashita video many times. I was fascinated with Yamashita and read up about him a few years ago. As I recall, the straight-laced classical guitarists of the time kind of ostracised him because of his unorthodox technique, using small finger etc. Too bad many couldn't accept his ground-breaking utter genius because they were threatened
