The audio chip is the IR3R53N next to the volume control. The speaker you replaced, from a Switch! They are popular for use with the sound Mod! 🖖😁👍🏻 All this time I wondered were my T-Shirt went. You robbed it from my wardrobe. It's OK brother Steve you can use any of them, just not! when I'm wearing them 🤣
Ah, thanks brother Steve! 😁 The speaker works well, and is definitely loud enough! Good to know where the audio chip is, thank you! I liked working on this, so i might get another one. Maybe a DMG. 🤔 ps. Sorry about the t-shirt! I'll wash it before I return it! 🤣
Steve, just wanted to say thanks for making all of this feel so much more approachable. Best I'd done before watching your videos was splice some wires back together to fix an old PS2 controller., and every step of the way I was sure I was going to break the thing. Seeing how simple some basic component swaps are though gives me a lot of hope I can maintain my old consoles for no other reason than to say I did. Today I ordered a new speaker for my own Gameboy Color ( I think it had the same rust issue yours did) so fingers crossed I can manage to solder 2 wires without destroying the board.
Nice video - if you didn't know, you could've checked the speakers resistance to determine if it was dead, though I can't tell if the ohms are even written on the thing so may not always be useful. Also, always upload easy ones - lets people know things aren't always hard to fix and they may try it themselves... plus I enjoy them regardless :D
Thanks Ziks! Yeah, I shoulda checked the Ohms reading, it would have at least told me if it was functioning at all! Appreciate the tip! Cheers, Steve 👍
I love watching you fix things that most people would throw away. Some questions StezStix, how did you learn this electronics stuff? What do you do with these gadgets when you’ve fixed them?
I too have the same t shirt. Nice fix Steve, now back to making my 36v Li-On scooter 10S 3P battery pack with cheap Chinese bms. The fire station is quite local to my home 😂
Hope you’re feeling better! Don’t worry about the simple fix, it was still interesting to watch! A nice and practical one that I could do at home. Keep up the great work Steve! Loving the videos!
I’ll tell you what Steve, whenever you get that de soldering gun out I hate the look of it and want it to fail….. But alas, it seems pretty good lol !!! Nice quick fix my friend - nothing wrong with that!!
Thanks SpaceGod! Yeah, I don't know what I'd do without this desoldering gun now, it really is so easy to use and makes life so much easier! Definitely recommend it! 👌
I really like how i had a very similar experience with a gameboy color. Audio was not working, a copper wire was loose in the speaker. It looked so easy to fix, but after nearly an hour of swearing (being french give me an edge with that), i just ordered a bunch of speakers on ebay... Anyways great video as usual!
Thanks Etienne! 👍 Yeah, i think it will usually be worth replacing the speakers as they are very cheap and the fix will be much more reliable! I'm really happy how this one turned out, it sounds great!
Thanks Stephen! 👍 Yeah, they seem solidly built, so I guess there isn't much to go wrong with them! I imagine screens, speakers and button membranes are the most common! 😊
Another excellent fix - never hide the straightforward ones or you’ll make folk think this game is hard 😀... ps, was there a headphone socket to check when the speaker failed? Sometimes it points the finger from the chip towards the speaker itself if the headphone is getting some audio. Keep up the great work 😀👍
Man dude idk what it is but I am loving your videos. I like repairing boards too, maybe that has something to do with it. There's a strange satisfaction in fixing something that is broken, even if it costs more to fix it than to buy another one, at least that's how I feel. Keep it up bro!
Nice fix, Steve! Every fix is an interesting one. Even a simple fix makes a good learning video for someone who doesn't know how to fault find or where to search. And the gun, OMG, the gun! 😂
Nice fix Steve, that will free up some time to fix the MicroVision keypad!!! Only joking, it is inhumane for any living being to spend that many hours working on them. Would make an interesting video though 😂
I had an issue with my old gameboy color that had no sound from the speakers replacing the speakers did not fix it but it turned out the issue was with capacitor c38 near the speaker was dry and needed replacement. Due to how old gameboy colors are now people should heavily consider recapping the boards to ensure longevity of the systems life.

T' tree 'Ouse 'Er Orrr-Rorrrs. As tie-ins go, it looks like it could be a decent game. Kinda surprised the Switch speaker worked - not sure what the wattage and impedance (ohms) differences are. As Chris has already suggested, I'd have tried the headphone jack first; either on headphones or some 3.5mm stereo jack speakers such as PC speakers. But meh, you got it working. 🤘😎 Pretty cool to see inside of the speaker part itself though; cheers for that Stez. You rock! Hope you're feeling better.
Thanks Toxo! Feeling much better now, thank you! Yeah, i shoulda checked the 'phone out - no idea why I didn't think of that! That Simpsons game is actually pretty darn good! I've had a few goes on it now. Cheers! 👍
True, but then the headphone jack is broken too and you search on the wrong end. Ohm measure the speaker and look up values for it then. But for the quick check, go for it. It either works or not and it's fast.
When you tried to fix the wire around the voice coil and test the speaker - you neglected to put the cone back on the speaker. It would not have made a sound even if it was working. I think It would have worked!
I think nowadays it's quite hard to get broken Gameboys for a good price. Feels like everyone wants to buy broken devices nowadays to make some money with it. Retro-Gaming / collecting, Modding and all this stuff is great, it's a huge trend and I really appreciate channels like this one. Great entertainment. Thanks for that! But unfortunately that's very bad for the prices :( For example I started collecting Masters of the Universe figures I think 5 years ago or so. It was already expensive, but still acceptable. Now the prices of some figues have tripled or even quadrupled (if you find them at all). Nowadays many people just can't collect this stuff anymore. That's a pity.
It looks like the same size of speakers you'd find in those cheap old crapoy headsets with just a flimsy foamy stuff as padding. The kind of speakers we had in the headphones for Walkman in the 80s. It's the same type used here.
@@StezStixFix Just ordered from CPC Farnell for 80 odd pounds. Should be great for replacing sticks and buttons on controllers, will make life a lot easier.

I find there's always easy fix for the game boys. Btw, new GBC speakers are very cheap online tho. Hope you get to replace it with a new GBC speaker later on. Thanks for the Video :D
Ah yes, the old voice coil detachment syndrome, it seems that some models were affected by this, I had to repair my daughter's GB color as well as my nephew's GB color because of this exact fault, I was able to repair the speaker on my daughter's GB by re-glueing the coil to the diaphragm ( which you didn't do so that explains why it was still not working, it needs the coil attached or it will not make sound...) on my nephew's GB I had to replace the speaker, because the voice coil had come apart, the coil is held together by by a thin enamel coating. But now I know that a speaker from a switch is the same impedance as the GBc, good stuff.
General GB sound issue tip: If your gameboy doesn't make any sounds through the built-in speaker, try a headphone. If the headphone works, then it's just an old crusty speaker you have to replace. The headphone jack is also a switch, when you plug in a jack it disconnects some lines (disabling the built-in speaker) and reroutes the sound to the jack (or maybe the jack is always connected, I don't know). When corrosion gets to this switch part it can easily disable the built-in speaker without having a jack plugged in. Clean the contacts and it should work in this case.
Haha, oops! You're absolutely right. That's the thing that vibrates isn't it? Yeah, not gonna hear anything without that! It might have worked then, but I think I would still have swapped it out, the Switch one works really well!
Great job mate 👍 👏 👌 so enjoy your videos 📹 👍 please keep them coming 🙏 👍 and here to help get your videos 📹 😉 out to everyone to enjoy 😉 😀 cheers mate 👍 👌
I don't think the speaker will be audible enough to hear without the diaphragm attached, so that was likely the main fault toward the end of the video. But even if you put the cone back in place it would probably be pretty quiet/distorted since the diaphragm is likely meant to be permanently attached to the rim of the speaker. You might have been able to fix it with careful application of glue but I doubt the sound would be "as good as new" if you did, so yeah, best to just replace the whole thing.
In your experience- which one console has the most useful parts for Frankensteining other consoles back to life? Like if you got a great deal on an absolutely unfixable lot of one particular console.. ?
Fantastic job, I have a game boy color that stopped turning on, I soldered the switch connections, it worked again, until it stopped working again. If deep cleaning doesn't work either, do you recommend the fuse bridge?
I was seller some years ago of retro consoles and videogames (i am programmer now), used to buy a lot of Game Boy Consoles from Japan in bulk broken, with broken buttons or very damaged to sell as used, because were very cheap, and in most cases the screens were good and were sold as parts (i sold a lot of parts of other consoles too, and kits of new replacements as capacitors, rubber contacts, etc.), and sold a lot of them, and the boards, well the problems where almost always, but always the speaker, i dont know but the speakers of the Game Boy consoles were very bad, because always were broken or almost muted, other times were the capacitors, some corrosion here and there, a dirty internally power button (i open them with the solder, clean the internal and close it after a common problem in all the Game Boy familly, from the original to the SP and Micro, that little one is a pain to open carefully to repair the power button) but only found a couple of times a mayor problem to have to discard the board, and the boards were sold very good too, and always were sold with a new speaker.
I'm curious, Steve (anyone) would that switch speaker have any higher sound output or clarity over the original (in an ideal world where the GBC one doesn't have 20 years of wear) as I'm curious if it's any kind of upgrade. So many mods now for cleaner audio and better video(IPS panels) it seems worth while asking.
Do you still have the Game Boy Color and maybe a Samsung phone ear bud or another one with multimedia buttons? I was looking at a used GBC today and heard a clicking/popping noise every 250 to 300 ms. Now I'm not sure if this is expected with these types of ear buds or the headphone output is faulty.
I broke my DSi XL trying to replace the touchscreen. I couldn't see well and I broke a pin. Unfortunately I don't have a magnifier. I had to send it off to a motherboard repair person. :(
If you ever open one of these up and fix them up, I recommend replacing the plastic lens with a glass one. I got mine on Ebay. www.ebay.com/itm/193536256960
Would have been a lot easier if you just tried measuring the resistance of the speaker. With the coil obviously disconnected, you would find out in less than a second.
