I have been using scraps to make hats and scarves to give to the homeless shelter so that people can stay warm throughout the winter. Everytime I bring in a bag of them my local homeless shelter is thrilled to see me coming with them. I usually take them about every 2 weeks to a month and the hats, scrarves and gloves get used up fairly quickly.

I've come to the decision that using leftovers needs to be "not my problem". Almost all leftovers go in a bag, when the bag is big enough, I go on Ravelry and offer to ship them in a flat-rate box anywhere within Canada. Then they aren't my problem and they're someone else's solution! That said, I do have a lot of minis that I sometimes struggle to use (aside from gnomes, of course!)

I'm actually working on building up a scrap stash... I was so terrified of having "useless" yarn hanging about that I would throw away perfectly good leftover yarn. Seeing you work on busting your scrap stash is actually helping me feel more confident about keeping mine, and knowing that there's plenty I can make out of these scraps. It's part of trying to be more environmentally and fiscally sensible with my crochet

For the 2nd year I am now busy not buying yarn for a year, because I have a lot of yarn and leftovers, mainly acrylic, which I no longer want to use for myself, but I also regret giving it away, so I have obliged myself to first use all my acrylic and then mainly the remainders first. Last year I knitted hats for the food bank and this year I'm making blankets for the food bank and people under administration. but to avoid the grind and boredom I do all scrappy blankets with dice I take 2 dice and take 11 different colors of yarn and throw each row with a dice and the number of eyes you throw then corresponds to a certain color and in my case I crochet then in with the linen stitch. so it remains a surprise for you which color is next. I have also made a calculation how many grams/balls will be in the blanket. I need a total of 17 100grams balls of leftovers for 1 blanket of 130x200cm. I just crochet a few rounds every day depending on my craft time that day and that's how I work through my acrylic stash this year and in December I bring all crocheted blankets to the food bank as a Christmas package. the customers happy I'm happy ;)

I can’t wait to see how your granny stripe finishes up. And the granny square too. I have just recently started knitting and don’t really have scraps. So I am taking the leftovers from current projects and rewinding them. Then putting them wrapping them up to open as my own advent. One of the best things about a bad memory is by Christmas I won’t remember some of the yarns. 😂

My crochet group uses lots of scraps to make our Comfort Critters that we donate to the dementia care wing of the Assisted Living
Centers and to the Sherries Dept., to give to little kids who need them. If you have extra scraps, we would love to use them. Thank you for your fun videos.
    Sue.

Tiny sweaters are what I hope to make from scraps moving forward. Next xmas my fam is getting sets of tiny sweaters with the first initial of each member of the individual family units arranged in a garland to drape over a doorway or on the wall. Maybe the year after that will be tiny pet sweater garlands. Eventually I'll get into amigurumi to spend scraps on I imagine

It's interesting how people classify things differently. I love scrappy projects. For me though, most of the yarn I see here I'd call stash. To me, anything that is 20g or more, or untouched, is stash. So only my bits and pieces of leftovers are scraps. These go into scrappy projects I love, along with selections from stash to blend things and add up as I require something of course.
When it comes to leftovers, I giggled and liked Stephen West's philosophy that as soon as you've wound up a ball you can consider it leftover lol.

I enjoy making baby booties for charity with scrap yarns. They are small projects that easily fit into handbags, are quick to make especially on the go, and I only have one pattern that I use so that I am not having to refer back to a document. Charities are also extremely happy to receive such items, especially seen as i use mostly acrylic (and am working my way though my own stash like you did last year) making them washable and good to give to low income parents.

I am also doing some scrappy projects - one is a striped Lifesavers cardigan - each stripe is a different mini or scrap. The other is making tons of i-cord with scraps which will then be knit into a chunky blanket. I am going to employ my husband to do the cranking of the i-cord maker. :)

In the fall of 2022 I started working with my leftovers/scraps. I made a lot of hats to donate and I started a scrappy blanket from al my sock yarn scraps. But the blanket is more a memory blanket, than a scrap yarn blanket. I also love colourwork and striped socks, so most of my sockyarn scraps will be used for other socks.
My focus this year is if I finish a project (but not socks, because those yarns will be used as I explained), I'll (almost directly) make something with the leftovers. I think it mostly will be (baby)hats, because I like knitting them, they're great, quick projects after I finish a garment(because this year I would really like to make garments with sustainble materials for my warderobe) and I can donate them to people who can use them. Or if I end with a lot of leftovers I'll maybe make a hat or something for myself. I think that I made a wrong calculations when I bought the yarn I started making a sweater from yesterday, I'll think I will end up with multiple balls, so I'm thinking of making a scarf with it (already found a beautifull pattern)
When I look at the box that hold all my scrapyarns, it feels great to see that they're are not that many scraps left! It feels good to use almost all of the fiber, saved money by working with what I already had, donate items and don't waste a lot of yarn.

Hi Natalie! I actually made the caliqo quilt shawl as a blanket! There are tips in the pattern for how to do this, but you basically knit the shawl and then pick up from the top and knit another shawl - making a square blanket =) So if the minis are 20g this is perfect since each triangle uses just under 10!

Hooked by Robin's how to crochet the continuous join as you go (CJASG) method is my favorite for joining granny squares! There's no seaming them together and you don't have an extra end for each square. In my opinion, it's the best way to join the squares if you have them all done before joining. I've used it so many times that I don't have to watch the video anymore :)
Also, if you could keep up with a square a day through vlogmas, joining 3 squares per day should take you around the same amount of time as that and if you occasionally did 4 squares you can totally get it done in Feb!

I usually knit baby things like mittens and hats out of my scraps, but I produce more than I can knit up 😅 maybe because I’m not a crocheter but do you explicitly want a double round of accent color between your granny squares? Like in the inner parts, according to your calculation, two rows will meet on the side of each square, but not so for edge and corner pieces.. if not intended you’ll have plenty of yarn to make something else out of 😅 cheers from Germany, love your bubbly podcasts

All of the yarn I have purchased, I had a project idea for but over time what I want to knit changes and the yarns I love come and go. As I do a lot of fair isle knitting I collected a lot of colors of different types of yarn too. So now I'm at the purge the acrylic worsted weight yarns and fuzzy blanket yarns that I don't think I'll use. I will hang onto my fair isle wool fingering and sport weight yarns as they are my Palette for fair isle projects and designs I'm working on. I will also keep the yarns for projects I have planned- a few sweaters and such.

I love your videos and seeing all your beautiful yarns and projects. You have such a great choice in your country. We don’t have much choice where I am from. Thanks for sharing.

I have 2 scrappy projects in the works! I started a fingering weight granny stripe blanket a couple of years ago after I started watching your podcast. It's getting semi close to being done!
I more recently started a scrappy hex blanket where I'm going to throw different weights of yarn into it by holding yarn double, crocheting extra rounds, or using a bigger hook.

Thanks for another great update - I love these stash series. Every time I see your granny stripe I want to start one myself. But I’ve got a mitred square blanket on the go and want to finish that before I start any other blankets. I took out all my scraps ( that weren’t minis ) and decided that I’m going to make a marled magic shawl with them.

Natalie, love seeing all the ideas for scrappy bits. I am working on a few scrappy blankets using various weights of yarn. I am really trying to use up as much of my oddments as possible this year.

I love scrappy projects. Each one is a mystery. I’m using my stash to knit coffee cozies for Birthday presents and a dozen or so Sophie Scarves for Christmas presents. The coffee cozies are a quick 2 hour knit. I plan to make at least one Sophie Scarf a month. Also pulling from my scraps for contrasting cuffs and ties for socks this year.

I'm using up my left over sock yarn & fingering weight stash in a scrappy granny stripes blanket. I'm holding two strands together.

when I get to the point that there's little useful yarn left and/or I've decided I don't like how that yarn knits up, I put them in a bag for stuffing for when I make animals or pumpkins or other objects so I don't have to use polyfill.

When you said that the granny stripes blanket would be your first project I was extremely shocked for a second, cause I thought you meant you would be starting a brand new granny stripes blanket and trying to finish it in January 😂

this is great! i started crocheting this year and already have a significant stash, so i'm definitely going to keep these ideas in mind for the future once that stash becomes scraps 😂 i have actually not yet done granny squares of any kind much less turning them into a blanket--i didn't realize that the joining would make two "edges" between squares! i thought adjoining sides would be connected by one row of stitches

Similar to the Radvent Throw I’m working up the Creative Advent Throw with my Homespun House 2022 advent. Good pattern variety that uses the majority of the mini skein! 😊

I adore the continuous jayg. Did it for a baby blanket for a friend last year and it goes surprisingly quick. If it's your main projects I think it is feasible to finish a blanket in a month. It took me a month and a half to do 130 small squares. I'm slow tho so ymmv.

Hi, Natalie - thank you so much for so many great ideas! How do you deal with your ends in your scrappy projects? Do you use the magic knot or do you sew/weave in your ends? Thanks!

At 96 squares for your join as you go blanket you’d need to do about 4 squares a day and that leaves you 4 days as a buffer (or 4 days to add your boarder?) seems fairly doable if you have a lot of crocheting time 🙂
