    Your video does an excellent job of reinforcing the learning I'm doing around motor speech disorders, so thank you! I second the comment below, and also want to thank you for expressing your thoughts on Gumbel's ableism and pointing out how problematic it is - AND how The Greatest was not having any of it.

      Hello, Perhaps take a recording when it happens and then take it to a speech pathologist or doctor. Might not be anything to worry about but might as well check!

    can strokes affect the basal ganglia and thus lead to hypokinetic dysarthria?

    • @johnepierce
      @johnepierce  3 місяці тому

      Yes! That's what vascular parkinson's/parkinsonism refers to at 1:20. Typically it is many very small infarcts over time but larger strokes can also cause hypokinetic dysarthria if they bilaterally affect basal ganglia.

    Hypokinetic And spastic dysarthria difference

    If hypokinetic means reduced movement, why does the person present with rapid speech?

    • @johnepierce
      @johnepierce  5 років тому +13

      Valerie Perez That's due to festination which is a feature of Parkinson's. I'm not sure what the mechanism of festination is outside of just saying it's dopamine-related. But movement basically means range here, and decreased range means you can complete more phonemes per unit of time. E.g. You can do more push-ups in a minute when you cheat and don't go all the way down.
      At least, I imagine that's a likely cause as festinated speech goes hand in hand with underarticulation.

      It's reduced movement within the articulators, so for example the tongue may not make it all the way to it's target location

    When you say he is running all of his words together, is there a special term for this?

    • @johnepierce
      @johnepierce  Рік тому +1

      Yes, festinating speech.
