Always liked this song... The music's cool and the lyrics have humor, intelligence, some sarcasm and great turns of phrase.
I always relate this song to summer time. It's like the epitome of good energy summer music to me.
One of the best 1 hit wonder songs of the 90s! Still turn it up when it comes on the radio
Yea totally! All they did was this song, but hey its a hell of a song. Any young kid growing up in the mid to late 90s is going to use this song as an injection right into their viens for a quick trip back to the good old days for a brief moment.
Check out sad sweetheart of the rodeo
"If you're bored then you're boring" words to live by
Factual!
Flagpole sitting was a fad back in the 1920's. People would climb flagpoles and see who could sit on top of them the longest. Today they would probably call it the flagpole challenge.
It was seen as a test of endurance. Colonel Potter forced Klinger into staying on a flagpole much longer than Klinger wanted to. Klinger wanted a medical discharge but Potter wanted him to break the current flagpole sitting record.
Don't give people ideas now 😁
@RockMeAmadeus Calm down Brad. You're looking into the lyrics too much.
@RockMeAmadeus (hands you a box of tissues)
@@evilfantasy69 Klinger also ate auto parts at one point to try to get out. That seems exactly like what you'd see in one of these tik-tok challenges.
"They cut off my legs / now I'm an amputee / God damn you!" is the pièce de résistance in this song. It never fails to make me laugh. Even my parents get a kick out of it.
They put you in a box before you had a chance to run wild and discover your true self? Or what you think it meant loo
This song is essentially a cry for an identity. There's an obvious jaded perspective on life and society in this song. .He doesn't feel like like he belongs in the world that he perceives, nor do others belong either, and yet humorously knows at the same time his perspective is blurred and skewered.
The singer is a music journalist. He had a bit of a sarcastic jadedness to the whole industry. Thank you Todd!
He actually did publish zines.
He was an editor at weekly newspaper The Stranger here in Seattle.
Yeah, and it was just a sort of fluke hit. They never wanted to get big or anything, just totally weren't into the mainstream music scene.
A good song after this would be “Pepper” by the Butthole Surfers
I feel like Brad couldn't get passed the name to enjoy that band lmfao
Yessss!
Pepper is one of my all time favorite songs!
And then someone needs to let them know that it's the same singer from Ministry's 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' lol
Jesus Christ, don't do that to them!
Zines are handmade, xereoxed underground mini magazines that were distributed at clubs and coffee houses and record stores in the 90s. Usually they were about politics, art, music or nerdy fandom stuff or had poetry and short stories or essays about weird, random subjects. Usually they were free or they cost a dollar or something.
I've always enjoyed this song. The chorus is so catchy and you just wanna scream at the top of your lungs with it.
It's also funny seeing Brad being totally into a song while Lex is kinda confused, completely different than most reactions you two do.
Yeah, I was thinking about the role reversal there too.
Always top of the lungs!! Totally agreed
"I'm running underground with the moles digging holes"
I love that line
Loved this song from the first day I heard it back in the 90s. Absolutely a song to belt out at top volume!
To me, this song always embodied the overall attitude of the alternative culture of the 90's.
Yes you had to be old enough then and there to feel it
I was in a band when this came out. As always bands kept an eye out for who got a deal, who's going where, basically whom to be jealous about. When these guys played SXSW (this was when it was still strictly a music festival) with this song they were the absolute darlings of the record labels. HUGE things were expected. You could not get away from this song in Seattle.
Irony being they're one of the most textbook cases of being absolutely screwed by their label (mostly in regards to their follow up singles and entire second album)
I went to High School with one of the guys in the band. Jeff Lin was a first chair violinist in Orchestra at Shorecrest in Seattle, WA with me in 1988 when we graduated together. I played Violin and Viola with him too. He was one of the most intelligent people in my class. I was begging you to do this during your live show. I love your reactions. All my love to you both.
Interesting story thanks for sharing
Harvey Danger are from Seattle where I live. Singer Sean used to be the managing editor at a weekly leftie newspaper called The Stranger, the parent paper of columnist Dan Savage who lived in the same neighborhood as the paper's offices. It was also owned by Village Voice Media. My friend wrote articles for Seattle Gay News part-time and was invited by Sean to interview for a full-time writing position with The Stranger, but he left and eventually ended-up writing a book, for film and working with University of Washington.
They wanted to be a witty, more artful band. When they broke huge for a brief time, they were appalled at how literally everyone took their lyrics. Fans would come up and say, "look, I got my tongue pierced", not realizing that the song was laughing at people who succumb to pop culture and fashion.
If he was making fun of others, he failed. But, if he was talking about his own misery, then it's a poetic nice song.
You lost me at "Lefty".
Look what they have done to your once jewel of a city.
@@davidjackson2690 Honestly you were probably just lost, anyway, regardless of being lefty or not.
@@avestuart I have a great sense of direction.
Look what the Left have done to Seattle.
Who is lost?
This song will always make me think of American Pie the movie!
Definitely! Right away!
Tommy Boy for me
@@frequentsee3815 that’s a classic for sure.
Disturbing Behavior for me
They could never put American Pie out today😔😒😂
This song is # 1 on my “clean your house btch” playlist. It’s a good song to get me hyped for vacuuming.
yer funny Zoey
i usually just play ramones for getting stuff done
Nice!! I'll have to try that
I hate cleaning, but with a burning fcking passion, so I need all the help I can get. Here’s a link to my cleaning playlist, if y’all need inspo. It’s a work in progress but it’s pretty effective so far. Not 100%, but I’d rather do math then clean and I suck at math, but it helps.
Peep Show C4 in England used this song as it's theme, so apt, so befitting of the main characters within Peep Show.
I’ve always liked this song. The lyrics are fun and the music itself is great and perfect for blasting in the car! Reminds me of being a little kid cuz my dad would play this song during road-trips lol.
Great track, it's used as the theme tune for an iconic British sitcom called Peep Show which is well worth watching! Would love to see you react to Roads or Glory Box by Portishead live from Roseland NYC ✌️
Peep Show is amazing!
Seconding my fellow Adam's suggestion of Portishead: Sour Times, Mysterons, Glory Box, Roads, All Mine are all pretty good.
Such a smart, fun song. Finally something Brad could get in to ...
Harvey Danger only released a few albums. The album this song came off of, Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone, is actually full of other smart, fun songs
I just requested this song from their last song reaction...Great song...Barenaked Ladies - one Week...Flagpole Sitta and One Week, were always in competition on TRL in the mid 90's
Ohhh! My follow ups after this song would be Eve 6 "Inside Out" and James "Laid" - both amazing songs
Inside Out was great! They deff need to react to that song.
Inside Out 👍👍👍
"Laid" is SUCH a good song. Imagine how much fun they'd have with the lyrics!
'Laid is SO FUCKIN GOOD. Damn it that's a good song, gonna go listen to that now...
Perfect idea! Just watched it, Steal My Sunshine was also an appropriate followup, even if it came first.;-)
Good '90s pop punk music. Skate punk rock.
Brad is the best. Great reaction. I think you would like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - The Impressions That I Get.
Oh yes they MUST do some Bosstones. Someday I Suppose would be another great song to check out.
Or Sell Out!
@@steffurness by Reel Big Fish?
@@mikethemotormouth yes,I believe that's the one
Yeah the Mighty Bosstones Detroit Rock City
This is one of those songs I can’t help but crank it up and sing along at the top of my lungs anytime I hear it. Thanks for getting to this one, guys! 💗
I'm one of the 12 people who saw this band live at Union Station in St. Louis for free. Was actually a good band live. Sounded good even though I only knew one song. lol The song is just light-hearted, don't take too seriously.
I'm subbed to a handfull of review chans and yours is my favorite. Great content and reviews, with chemistry. Keep up the good work and know that its appreciated!
Flag pole sitting is long gone form of self expression. There was a guy who sat up there for more than a year. Some did it to test their own ability to an endure extreme situation. Some did it as a form of peaceful protest. Others did the same thing up a tree.
wrong!
One of my favorite songs. Such a lyrically fun song.
Love this song!! this will always remind me of the movie "Disturbing Behavior" !! fun 90s teen movie w/ an awesome 90s soundtrack :)
This is one of my favorite songs and one of my favorite bands, most underrated band of the 90s IMO, been listening to it for 25 years-- I just now realized the bridge is making mention of 90s bands. I had no fucking idea. Way to go for picking that up on your first listen. Sean Nelson is a brilliant lyricist.
Any PEEP SHOW fans out there?
Love this song.
Yes!!!
Yep, great show!
Yes…! First time i heard this song was on this show…!
Love this song! It's funny and catchy as hell.... lol
Loved this song, was a minor hot here in the UK that later got used as the theme to Mitchell & Webs brilliant Peep Show.
Always reminded me a little of The Dandy Warhols who were also quite brilliant
A classic 90’s song- Also a very easy fun baseline to play.
Always loved this song
Like the guys vibe. Wants to understand the subjective interpretation. Picked up on it right away, but deep diving into lyrics were lost because of the girl. This guy knows how hard that song hit, it did the exact same to me. Still liked and subscribed. But discuss your pov, and keep like company. Much love
It's a shame these guys were a one-hit wonder, the entire Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? album is fantastic. They released some other singles, which are good, but none really caught on. Woolly Muffler is my favorite of theirs, and Jack the Lion is a great song with a unique perspective on death and dying.
Great band, I'm always one to point out that if a band has one "hit" that doesn't mean the rest of their stuff isn't good, just that people struggle to keep up...
Carlotta Valdez is my favorite of that album.
Why I'm lonely from king james version has got to be one of my favorite songs from the band
One of my favorite albums of all time still
I was in pre-high school. I remember when American Pie came up. My older cousins blowing the speakers up with this song all the way back in 99-00s.
This song is totally about beating the bishop and there's at least two other songs from this time frame that follow suit: "Longview" by Green Day and "Black Hole Sun" By Soundgarden. You're welcome.
Four naan, Jeremy? Four? That's insane!
Makes me think of the book The Catcher in the Rye. This is such a fun song, you gotta crank it up! One of the best 90s songs. Another good one was from Local H - Born to be down.👍They always seem like a pair.
I would say from personal experience that this song absolutely speaks to people who are suffering from mania.
First time I heard this song seventh grade on a school bus on my way to Camp Bernie for a class trip.
4 Naan Jeremy, 4? That's insane
You two are funny in your analysis. Very enjoyable. I love this song along with the best song on the CD, Carlotta Valdez. Hard hitting punk rock!
Great tune! I don't know how much sense it makes, but it's kick ass. We all run our fingertips up the flagpole to see who salutes, but no one ever does. 🤣
I've loved this song since it came out when I was fifteen, it always felt like the lyrics perfectly balanced being in pain while trying not to show it, or knowing we need to keep cool! The agony and the irony...
This song is fucking genius !
I'm glad you finally got to check this out! Great reaction!
Sugarcult - Bouncing Off the Walls
Brad seems more like a philosopher with all these questions rofl This is why some people research songs before they react, so they aren't sitting here trying to get answers instead of listening to the music.
But it would be less of a reaction if they were prepared for the lyrics. I know I've never researched a song before I listened to it, and I doubt there are any bands out there who would want you to do that.
Trivial sublime isn't the right lyric. It actually says Mc Cready is so fine as in Mike Mc Cready of pearl jam. Used to see these guys playing bars in Seattle before they got signed. Their album where have all the merry makers gone is a banger Check out the song private helicopter
Always loved this song. It defines me. It makes no sense and makes perfect sense at the same time
I was in high school when this song came out. I always get the biggest kick out of it.
I love this tune. And as others say it was a one hit wonder of the 90s.
Another 'wonder' of the 90s were
The Wonderstuff - Size of a Cow.
That's Brad's best reaction!
I heard this song for the first time just a few months ago and I love it now. Fun lyrics and great energy.
I've always been a thrash metal guy but I've always thought this song was catchy. I've always liked it. Great song choice and reaction.
Totally.
Hah. Great pick. If you liked this you'll probably like Ben Folds Five: "Army" (though that song is significantly more coherent than Flagpole Sitta.)
FR the cadence and the bass line carry it for me
Really underrated band with smart and funny lyrics. I really liked their follow-up album, "King James Version," too, especially the first single, "Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo."
Yes love this song for those reasons too Brad
Another of my Top Ten, even after all of these years...actually got to see them live in Charlotte
I knew Brad would dig this one 💪
You guys should check out the movie this was on a soundtrack for. DISTURBING BEHAVIOR, starring a young handsome James Marsden and Katie Holms...fresh from Dawson's Creek. Lol
Think... Stepford Wives (og, not the remake).
I always thought it was about being frustrated with life (in all ways) and going nuts about it...
Love your content!! Keep it up.
Crosby Stills and Nash. They have some of the best songs ever recorded. Check out Suite Judy blue eyes.
YES! That entire album is Fantastic!
The chorus really gets me lol I liked this song as soon as I heard the chorus
It's sorta free association. And a flagpole sitta refers to a kind of trend in the 1920s where people would dare each other to climb a flagpole and stay there for the longest time...
I’m giving Brad the points on this one. Good job Brad.
Watch the movie Disturbing Behavior. This song becomes more powerful.
This song epitomized 90s power pop. Catchy as heck, funny and weird...
Everytime I hear this it reminds me of "Disturbing Behavior "
Love the comedy of 90s, keep it up!
Both of you are awesome. You have great chemistry and she is absolutely adorable.
Little Round Mirriors is another good song they made. They break out the French Horn in that one.
This whole album is killer!
The "Rock and Roll True Stories" channel did a pretty good video on this song (and the band in general). If you dig this tune I suggest giving it a spin.
Nice review. You both rock.
Sean Nelson (singer/writer) is more writer than musician; indeed he was primarily a music critic. So basically he's just letting rip on all the "clever" subcultures in the 1990s.
Todd in the Shadows (a music critic on YT) has a "One-Hit Wonder" series and we spent YEARS screaming for him to do this. Did not disappoint, he points out a bunch of little things from the video. You might enjoy that.
Next time: "Spirit in the Sky" (Norman Greenbaum)
"Na-Na, Hey-Hey, Goodbye" (Steam)
This song has been a whole mood ever since I heard it in American Pie.
Love this song. Great one hot wonder.
Also it’s nice to see Brad like a song but it’s funny that Lex usually doesn’t like it if Brad does.
"Kill my mind" I think really just means his thoughts are going and going, non-stop. Thinking about everything, hence the semi-randomness of the lyrics of the song. Maybe he's got ADD., and he just wants some peace and quiet.?
Many tv shows like peep show and movie and one great song
Love you guys. Great song!
Wait what. Never listened to the lyrics. This song is hilarious.
This band has fantastic wordplay. their later work slaps. 👍
Forgot about this one. Thanx guys
The greatest one hit wonder of all time!
Rage Against Machines was a term in the 70’s against the government or rules. Sublime it’s meaning of its own
@RockMeAmadeus I thought the same back in the day
Brad's reaction to this video... it's like he's in my head.
One of my favourite all time songs, fuckin love it!
I've heard all the musics.. no matter the time or genre this gd song is one of my faves
there is a badass female vocalist remake of this song by the group " Elohim - Flagpole Sitta " it's a totally different version, they really made it something different
This was a question in pub trivia last week ... I was the only person to get it right .... where was I ... oh yeah ... my daily request for The Decemberists "Crane Wife (1,2,&3)", "The Infanta", " Yankee Bayonet", or "The Mariner's Revenge Song"
Damn man lol, I haven’t thought about this song in years😂
Of course Brad liked this song!! It's very "wordy." In fact, Todd in the Shadows described the songwriter as a "snotty 90's Morrissey." You should watch Todd in the Shadows analysis of this song; he explains a lot.
Yes Lex you're in the know now😂👍
