My father had a saying growing up. "An animal is only as smart as it needs to be." A simple saying that pretty much means every animal is brilliantly smart at the things that matter to their lives. For example, squirrels and cats can do complex physics equations in milliseconds while jumping and climbing around.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about crows. Some of them are smart enough to use tools, make traps and bait them, and even use currency. They've been also seen experiencing empathy, making sure that every one in their flock is well taken care off, and even held grudges against certain humans while making friends with others.

    "He died suddenly"
I've heard of birds dying suddenly after the lightbulbs were changed, or after they bit something that otherwise isn't known to be toxic, but is to birds. Seeing how the bird lives in an artificially-illuminated environment full of painted blocks and various synthetic materials, maybe it was exposed to one of these unusual toxins?
    Just a guess.

    • @millienexu5684

i imagine because it's literally his life the things he was exposed to were closely monitored for their safety to birds? but not sure vid quality makes it seem like it was from a while ago, so its possible standards weren't that high. but if its a toxins thing wouldn't they be able to find out?

Birds instinctively hide their illness because in the wild they would be left behind or be targeted by predators. What seems sudden to us could have been an illness building up over time, it's why you need to monitor a birds behaviour thoroughly and if you notice so much as a change in mood or energy you rush em to the vets because even if a bird loves you and trusts you to the max, it's instinct tells it to hide how sick it is from you because you might abandon it.

@Miro i was not referring solely about intellect, chimps are better at humans when it comes to seeing a series of numbers appear and then going blank and picking them in the right order. Doing so much faster than a human can. Nautiloids and birds of prey have better eyesight.
These are just a couple of examples. Different organisms have us beat in various factors.the major advantage we have is our ability to reason and share complex ideas.

    • @SeabassFishbrains

He had a heart condition and plucked due to his physical illness. Alex, and all of Dr. Irene Pepperberg's birds, was one of the most well cared for captive parrots on the planet, his condition was congenetal, not stress induced. Also, the number 1 cause of plucking in African Grey parrots is low humidity, not stress or boredom. Most birds that pluck due to stress, trauma or boredom will pluck themselves bare in a matter of days.

My favorite clip of Alex is a clip from the Alex and Me documentary where Dr. Pepperberg hands Alex a chunk of corn, Alex says "Corn!", takes a few bites, then looks directly at Dr. Pepperberg, drops the corn very deliberately onto the floor and says "Pick up corn!" to her.
Also it's worth noting that Alex didn't actually show no signs of ill health before his death. He was actually struggling with a heart condition for which he was receiving care from an excellent avian vet in the months leading up to his death, and his death was caused by his heart condition. You can actually see in some of the clips in this video that Alex started to feather pluck a little bit as one of the first visible signs of his illness. Parrots pluck for many reasons: boredom, stress, mental trauma, skin conditions, lack of showers, low humidity, improper sleep, poor diet and often when they just aren't feeling good. Alex was the epitome of a well cared for, well entertained bird so it was obvious that Alex's plucking indicated a medical problem.

I actually used to have teachers kinda like that... One was a math teacher, so I mostly just silently lost my mind during his classes, because I'm ridiculously bad at math (though I did do good in his chemistry class...) and the other one was a physics teacher, who got so ticked off by the other people in that class, that his lessons became a lot less fun, very quickly...
That math teacher was actually the most amazing teacher of all time... he vanished on day while I was in 10th grade, and just never returned. Neither did I.

Technically you are not dumber since you can operate inventions and understand concepts
We don't call creatures dumb for not understanding human features or smart because they can, we usually call them smart based on how they live, crocs are smart because they usually go around rivers when there are migrations, not because they can count

That chimpanzee spent it’s entire life doing that memorizing game
Automatically explains why it does it better
Also we know only humans can code that game
So u can’t say they’re “smarter” through one trait

    • @madyjules06
      @madyjules06 2 роки тому +3

@Sora Lee I completely agree with you; it’s impossible to judge intelligence through one trait.
Thought you’d enjoy knowing that the chimp footage was from a National Geographic special and the chimp which we saw on this video clip is less than two years old (at the time it was filmed) he is the fastest at the memory game. (way faster than the adolescents & adults in the group…)
in fact his only serious “competition” is his own mother -> who also loves to play this game.
The scientists that work with this group of chimps provide them with a beautiful environment (as close to nature as possible) and they’re only able to test the chimps when the chimps decide to enter the testing alcove (which is easily accessible from their living quarters) so the chimps decide whether they want to play the game (or not )
the chimp that you saw in this video like his mother loves to play this game and as a result he’s become much faster than the rest of his family group. And by one year old he surpassed his mother’s speed & accuracy at the number ID game…
I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s variations and there’s a genetic as well an environmental component. ✌🏼
