It's not just a PR stunt - it advances the industry forward. Other companies look at them and determine what is possible, it inspires others. The first people to make a folding smart phone were probably laughed at, but it's gaining more and more traction now - and that was born from the idea of a concept. Eventually, a concept phone could come out that defines the game all over again.
cant imagine a tech guy would say stop to concept phones. I love concepts. I loved like all the stuff you showed. I get that your point is by the time its released as a concept phone, it means its not likely to ever come to fruition, they just want to gain some attention so people think that some day they might do something cool like that showed "that day". i personally just love seeing the tech. we dont see much innovation in phones anymore. a big part of that is money. too much innovation, the phone costs too much, people wont buy. and companies arent in the business of making niche products. still though. its nice to see where the tech is at and yea, ill be a sucker and hope that some day, a company will do the tech its justice and we'll see it released. maybe it'll be well received and lead to more innovation through competition. the foldable screen is a great example of that. it's niche, but people like it enough for multiple companies to attempt it and innovate it. That could be the case with any of the tech in these concept phones.
Tech Guy that is clearly an Apple fanboy and never waste ANY video to criticize Android phones, even on titles? Yeah, he still thinks he is a journalist.
They’re not JUST pr stunts. They are also a way to test the waters and see what features people would be willing to spend more for, what’s worth investing more in miniaturizing / reducing production cost on, etc.
The issue with liquid cooling is that it's still limited by the thermal capacity of the phone's body. So in other words you can have an almost as good effect for far cheaper by turning the whole phone into a better passive heatsink (heatshield and all metal case with a good connection to the SoC) or you actually get the heat out of there with air cooling.
So they are stunts? You just described the specific type of PR stunt. The get find out what kind of people like and spend money on by making a render. Companies have focus groups. There’s a reason Apple sells so much. They give people a good smartphone experience. Not everyone wants to root their phone or have every single inch customized or even care about a finger print sensor. People are willing to spend more for the same 3 things as always. Battery. Screen. Camera. Nothing else in a phone matters
I thought the Mi Mix Alpha would make the list for crazy concept phones, the way that phone looked and the charging animation is so cool, futuristic and conceptual!
Tbh Mi mix alpha just had the looks nothing else was beneficial in it. Like why would you turn your device to see the other page when you can just swipe it? The only thing that was interesting and practical in that device was the virtual volume rockers.
People might remember that Apple used to do "concept videos", where they'd take a research idea and get it far enough along to show a cool demo video of it. So it wasn't something you could buy, but it showed off some of the ideas that Apple was working on. Those died when Steve Jobs returned. He hated them. I believe he liked the saying of "Real artists ship".
No, Apple do it. They bring forth (for better or for worse) real concepts and others follow. Good ones: Brought 2x resolution with retina, 64bit architecture, Designed their own SoC Questionable ones: Headphone Jack gone Notches and islands.
@Marton Low - you're describing real, buyable products which deliver the actual concept. I'm referring to concept *videos,* which would show off some amazing technology which wasn't actually implemented yet. The most famous example being the video for the "Knowledge Navigator" in the late 1990's. This video from Marques looks at a product which (kinda) delivers on some cool-sounding concept, but in such a weak implementation that it's almost certainly a dead-end. It does not look like it will ever become a must-have feature on a mainframe product. Since the return of Steve Jobs, Apple has had a few product announcements which were mis-fires, but not "concept" products.
Why would you want them to stop? It's really cool to see these kinds of concepts and I'm sure the teams that did all the R&D work also get a kick out of showing them.
is it practical? not really ***(at least as it's being used now, although definitely practical in concept)***, but it's cool to see this concept coming down the pipeline, it gives a lot of inspiration.
@@n.s-studios just because it's not practical doesn't mean they should stop it, the main motive for concept and rnd in general is to find a way to make impractical things practical

Literally just watched Linus's video on this and honestly I'm happy with the ongoing innovation.. Its tough to have a water cooling solution for phones due to the lack of space but still c'mon.. it will more likely contribute to more research in this sector and better overall performance for the consumer market. Also OnePlus back with them innovations. Edit : That is very true. OnePlus used to be one of the best at price to performance but now its alas.. By Innovation i meant companies like Xiaomi or OnePlus always go a little way to add extra features or gimmicks that makes them fun.. not perfect in any way but who doesn't love a bit of new. Edit 2 : I meant innovation in phones in general but definitely was a mistake to highlight OnePlus in this case.. i loved this feature although it didn't provide that big of a performance difference because i always loved the concept of a water cooled phone so i became a little too excited when this was brought on lmao.
To all the people saying “it’s a great way to test the waters and see how people feel”: Look at concept cars; they’re (typically) always WAY more cool than the final product. Consumers get excited for the concept, then the manufacturers deliver underwhelming products. It’s been this way for decades.
It's also a great way to gauge whether people want a particular idea. I'd love a screen that is natively matte (how it used to be done for all displays until about 20 years ago). The matte screen protectors that I use dim the display a little anyway.
Built in display matt layer also decreases sharpness and makes screen dimmer, there is a reason why screens are not Matt in laptops even though they don't have touchscreens
@@cyjanek7818 If someone, like me for example, installs a matte screen protector, and is willing to make those sacrifices to do so; doesn't it stand to reason that getting a device with fewer layers, and thus better clarity than a screen protector, makes sense for that person? It doesn't mean that you have to choose it if your prefer glossy. Also matte laptops, and desktop monitors are still common, because they make looking at the display in real world conditions much easier.
The idea sounds pretty sick, I did have quite the heating problems when using my iPhone in the tropics. Like putting a block of ice on the back of the phone to be able to use it at all.
I do feel like rollable phones are going to be a thing since Samsung is putting a fair amount of resources into it. I also feel like they make more sense than foldables. No crease, no extra cameras or screens, no double thickness.
my favorite concept phone was that all screen xioami phone where the entire phone was a screen it even wrapped to the back, i loooved the charging animation on that and the seamless ability to take selfies using the back camera without a "separate" extra tiny screen like other concept phones
I think we should keep an open mind. This really could be ground breaking if it is combined with the Solid State Active Cooling that was showcased at CES earlier this year.
We could move liquid in much smaller spaces decades ago. The real question is whether this has any practical sense, or that said company is hyping up something that won't be useful. My 2 cents: focus on more efficient chips and use the water cooling space for battery and other useful elements.
I'd be really impressed if someone made a concept phone without optics hanging out its rear end and a hole in the screen. And then followed through by making it into a real phone
Soon Marques might as well become a movie director, cause WOW his production team is seriously good. Keep up the eye-pleasing visuals and great content.🔥
Great concept, but done in a lazy way. He water may remove heat from the processor, but they should increase surface area. Maybe make the fone of aluminum, or putting some fins in the camera module
New iPhone: Same design, barely any changes. 50% improved battery and 2x faster processing. New OnePlus: We've added flowing water to speed up charging by 1 minute 😅
Tbh, LG did put a lot of concept phones on the market like the Chocolate, the LG Wing or the 3D phone... Didn't worked that well lol. But it's really cool to see some crazy ideas once in a while
Earlier on this morning I watched a video on this exact phone on the LTT channel. Funnily enough OnePlus asked Linus *NOT* to do deep diagnostics text on the phone, so he did it anyway lol 😉
Companies always seem to be focusing on gaming phones for their concepts but phone gaming isn't really that popular as a lot of normal phones can run minecraft and more just fine.
Truth behind this: a company spends a ton of money on R&D, and it doesn't pan out. Best thing to do after? Create some PR to show you are trying to innovate. Not a big deal.
Well, at least get rid of the bubbles. I’ll also be really interested in hearing how the liquid reacts to cold. Some of us encounter subzero temperatures from time to time, and while no phone likes those, imagine the liquid freezing and bursting the tiny tubes. ☃️
Maybe the bubbles help with temperature expansion, but i think that they are mainly there for the looks. Especially in a concept phone where they can clearly show that the water in there is moving.
I feel like it’s the same as concept cars, it may not be commercially viable, but it does push the boundaries of the industry and can put some very creative ideas out there and lead to meaningful innovations
Smartphones have reached the pinnacle of innovation in terms of hardware, what all things can be cramped into a 6 or 7 inch device is already there and so in the coming years, most of the upgrades will be on the software side and marketed as something new and groundbreaking.
From LTT's testing it seemed like it works, but phones are so small that there isn't a lot of surface area to saturate with heat. Water cooling is probably a better option for devices that actually have a fan or more surface area so it would be interesting to see if this could be useful in a gaming laptop for example.
R&D is also to put the company in a good position if an idea was to take off and puts it in contention. Imagine if meta takes off and you don't have anyone who can take advantage of it, you're on the back foot already.
Concept phones aren’t just the end result of research and development, but they are part of it. One thing they are researching is public interest in certain concepts. That phone this year with the matte screen is a perfect example, they want to see how much buzz it will make to see if it’s worth pursuing it any further
It's dum to put a liquid cooling in a phone. It's limited by the area of the phone for cooling. The best way is to use vapor chamber. For active cooling heat sink + fan, is the only way to have efficient better cooling in a phone now.
The concept phones are the one's keeping it interesting it shows how much effort is put to make the consumers buy their products and it's always interesting. If the "concept" of multiple camera's on a phone didn't hit we may not have seen them, same for fold and so many other innovations in tech and yeah type c charging port in an iPhone isn't a "concept"😂😂
You remind me alot of myself Marques. I always liked tech since I have been a kid. Might consider doing tech on my youtube as time goes on. I shall be known as...The Beatbox Techman
I actually think the RIZR is a more interesting rollable than the Oppo concept because of its small size. The back panel also works as a cover display like for the Flips and Razrs. There will obviously be durability concerns. The part that rolls up looks very flimsy as many pointed out. But I think this concept already made foldables look very boring and outdated. Rollables can remove a crease. If this ever comes to the mass market, it will be my next phone. But it's just a concept. I remember seeing foldable and rollable screens back in CES 2011. We didn't get the curved displays about a year after the Samsung's YOUM announcement in early 2014. Then foldables by 2019. We could be waiting for a while for this next generation RIZR. Rollables can be the new gen for sliders like the OG RIZR, Z9, LG Chocolate, Nokia N95, etc. I currently still use a Razr 5G next to a Flip 3, iPhone SE 2022, iPhone X, and Pixel 3. But my sim is inside that Razr because I prefer using it as a phone the most even if I prefer my Flip 3 more as an overall device. Motorola and Nokia have the best reception and call quality. Looks like my next phone will continue to be a stylish and pocketable Motorola. Wishlist 1. Motorola RIZR 2. Apple iPhone 13 mini
The problem with this “cryo flux” and why it sounds like it will barely make a difference is that it doesn’t actively cool. All liquid does is move heat around, you’d still need a fan or radiator to extract the heat from the phone. Without that you’re heavily limited
Asus and Lenovo are absolutely not the only ones to try active cooling. Razer was the first with vapor chambers, and you COMPLETELY left out the leader in active cooling, RedMagic. How can you not know your information being such a popular and renowned reviewer?
For the sake of imagination and inspiration I hope companies never stop showing prototypes and concept phones, cars or tech in general! It wouldn't surprise if one or another engineer has been "influenced" by seeing one of those concepts in detail and developed something cool that actually comes to market! The pop-up-camera was a cool thing to do on a Xiaomi Mi 9T, I think ... and with those "ultra" or "plus" models today for 1000 bucks there would be the enough room and money to do that again.
Really cool video I wish there where a part 2. Also there are good things from just those types of phones that become true like the samsung fold and flip
I don’t think they should stop. Companies push the boundaries of smart phones, which lead us to the phones we have today. So, I see no problem in a company getting good PR for their efforts and pushing the market forward. Some tech is just too early, but may eventually make it to the market. Most of the models you showed were in the last 2-3 years. Maybe we’ll see them in the market in 5+ years because of the R&D done already.
It’s incredible that you have not only the best, most insightful thoughts on tech, but that your production continues to be at the bleeding edge. You can watch your videos just for the cinematography and editing. It’s unbelievably impressive
I think water cooling could be a viable option in the future. Remember when water-cooling PCs was brand new, and it was practically a joke. Also, as Linus showed, the pumps and water cooling didn't add to the size by very much at all
Your are the #1 when it comes to video quality on youtube. When are we getting MKBHDR! that's right HDR if you upgrade then others will most phones can do hdr! make it a thing! why not make your videos look better than every one else and really stand out.
Well, as Chinese are not allow to make their own chips anymore, a few degrees of cooling or some “out of the box" thinking are basicly all they can do to differentiate their products.
The thing is for most of concept phones, is more like they can't make it to the massive production right now, but they still wanna try and get testified from market, so they get a chance to make it possible in the future. eg. Folded Phone used to be concept as well. The PR thing is a result, not a cause
That liquid cooling thing I think is mainly useful when you attach a peltier cooler. It can spread the coldness evenly instead of making condensation in one spot.
First mistake Marques is making is thinking the cooling solution Oppo/OnePlus made is only for phones. I can see this being used by laptop manufacturers in future. Cooling phones/laptops should be top priority for manufacturers and any innovation here is gladly welcome. Vapor chambers have their thermal limits reached already.
I know you missed a lot of doubles/triples and other references but that is 100% understandable considering your new venture into the lyrics & meanings of Em’s songs - there are so many more layers to Killshot than you may think, Em also basically replied to everything mgk mentioned in rapdevil
For the matte display: you can buy matte screen protectors. They look AMAZING on any phone and are very thin, so you more or less feel the glass underneath.
I fully disagree that its time to stop... its because of this we have foldable phones, this is how new ideas are tested and might make it to market some day.
My favorite concept phone was like two phones stacked on top of eachother. Still only one screen but the back part moved up slightly and that's where the camera was. So it was a full edge to edge display with no camera interrupting it, plus you could put a bigger battery in the the back half. And since the camera slid up it's by default a physical privacy cover
As Linus already said... It works but only up to the thermal limit of the device.

Like how a 1 inch sensor did not excite Marques, it excited MrWhosetheboss Arun. They saw that ofcourse for an average consumer, none of these are useful, now. But they did not deny the possibilities. And that is what Concept devices represent, possibilities.
Not everything have to save lives. If that was the case a knife, that can cut a human and vegetable alike, would have never been invented.
Well said Sir! 🙌
sameway ... Samsung bought the large screen we see everyday from concept to reality 10 years ago.... ppl made fun and then its the trend
You missed the point, there’s already phones out there with this technology. And it works… this isn’t groundbreaking technology
👏
Rollable phone would be sick
It's amazing and helps innovation I'm all for it, nothing wrong with concepts
Yeah Concepts phones are the reason Why we have now foldable phones
Yeah I’m all in for concept phone
Too bad not many actually came through
I just want the cool lights lol.
screw innovation
I can't quite understand the title of this video. Innovation is essential in this market. It always was.
I like the blue lights. Cool cooling system.
Phones do get hot. I always use mine on speaker phone
cant imagine a tech guy would say stop to concept phones.
Imagine believing this Grifter lmao, he's a Squarespace shill and an Apple Fanboy.
That usbc iPhone comment sure aged well😂
Okay the floating phone at 2:42 was so sweet; especially with it being a video (note the exiting car in the background).
They’re not JUST pr stunts. They are also a way to test the waters and see what features people would be willing to spend more for, what’s worth investing more in miniaturizing / reducing production cost on, etc.
I would buy it if the back was metal, just slap fan gamepad and say bye to throttle
So PR...
Bro that’s what PR means 😅
I thought the Mi Mix Alpha would make the list for crazy concept phones, the way that phone looked and the charging animation is so cool, futuristic and conceptual!
I loved that concept phone
that phone left a lasting impression on me for sure. what a stunner that piece was
Tbh Mi mix alpha just had the looks nothing else was beneficial in it. Like why would you turn your device to see the other page when you can just swipe it?
The only thing that was interesting and practical in that device was the virtual volume rockers.
@@dragonforcegaming7555 it had better and unique features than many of the concept phones in this list
@@AntonyGeorgeBoltzzz name some the unique features other than the virtual volume rockers and pressure points all around the screen.
Yaay!! We've finally heard the classic "I've been using it for weeks" phrase after years! 😂
For me one of the best concept I've seen is the under screen camera and its getting successful now rather than the mechanical pop up camera
4:00 omg it was real
People might remember that Apple used to do "concept videos", where they'd take a research idea and get it far enough along to show a cool demo video of it. So it wasn't something you could buy, but it showed off some of the ideas that Apple was working on. Those died when Steve Jobs returned. He hated them. I believe he liked the saying of "Real artists ship".
RIP AirPower.
@@Knevitzdoug Apple never officially said anything about that... It was always media websites like MacRumours, Patently Apple...
No, Apple do it. They bring forth (for better or for worse) real concepts and others follow.

Brought 2x resolution with retina,
64bit architecture,
Designed their own SoC
Questionable ones:
Headphone Jack gone
Notches and islands.

@@Vee-bv1vh I'm agreeing that they should keep making em, my comment was a bit confusing sorry lol.
Because, like in this case, it's useless.
@@wayando but what if it was useful? You don't know untill you try, what if the water cooling worked way better than right now? You will always have failures but that doesn't mean to entirely stop trying. If companies stopped trying to do weird stuff, we would never get the foldable phones or under display cameras etc
But where is the "innovation" in this phone 😅😅
Didn't Linus say that the liquid cooling worked though, Marques says it doesn't work at all
@@sabret00the It worked a little bit :)
@@hundredfireify buy a walkman mate 🫡
Agreed.
To all the people saying “it’s a great way to test the waters and see how people feel”:
Look at concept cars; they’re (typically) always WAY more cool than the final product. Consumers get excited for the concept, then the manufacturers deliver underwhelming products. It’s been this way for decades.
I'd probably drop it, get liquid damage on everything within 5 minutes of unboxing it
I mean, their motto used to be "never settle". This is exactly the move to go back to their roots
It's also a great way to gauge whether people want a particular idea. I'd love a screen that is natively matte (how it used to be done for all displays until about 20 years ago). The matte screen protectors that I use dim the display a little anyway.
I don't like it. The image is worse. Shiny screens look much better. Better colours and light.
Matte glass is bad. Look bad on amoled displays and even worse in LCDs.
@@Its_BMOn Jon touchscreen displays? Fuck gloosy displays.
But you will not have stand feature like flex mode but of course you can get stand case for rollable phone? Btw I'm typing on z fold 2
my favorite concept phone was that all screen xioami phone where the entire phone was a screen it even wrapped to the back, i loooved the charging animation on that and the seamless ability to take selfies using the back camera without a "separate" extra tiny screen like other concept phones
LG's rollable phone DID ship. It was production ready when they killed it. Korea-only and less than thousand units but it did ship.
I think we should keep an open mind. This really could be ground breaking if it is combined with the Solid State Active Cooling that was showcased at CES earlier this year.
💩
concepts will almost never be released. OnePlus Concept One never was. forget this.
I didn’t expect that liquid cooling was possible on a smartphone at this decade.
We could move liquid in much smaller spaces decades ago. The real question is whether this has any practical sense, or that said company is hyping up something that won't be useful. My 2 cents: focus on more efficient chips and use the water cooling space for battery and other useful elements.
@@h4x0y ye i agree with this point, especially when overheating is not the big problem in smartphones in these days.
This is from the future, iphone with usb-c port exists
I'd be really impressed if someone made a concept phone without optics hanging out its rear end and a hole in the screen. And then followed through by making it into a real phone
Let people try. It's never a time to stop. If they shipped an unfinished or faulty product then you can term it as "CRAZY".
Soon Marques might as well become a movie director, cause WOW his production team is seriously good. Keep up the eye-pleasing visuals and great content.🔥
Wouldn’t he than rather be a movie editor?

LTT also did a review on this and tested for the cooling and it does work to some extend (burst loads, not extended ones)
Thanks!
Great concept, but done in a lazy way. He water may remove heat from the processor, but they should increase surface area. Maybe make the fone of aluminum, or putting some fins in the camera module

Tbh, LG did put a lot of concept phones on the market like the Chocolate, the LG Wing or the 3D phone... Didn't worked that well lol. But it's really cool to see some crazy ideas once in a while
True
Not a problem in my country. Here the water my burst the tubes by boiling.
@@SIPEROTH Sounds uncomfortable. Kuwait?
Maybe the bubbles help with temperature expansion, but i think that they are mainly there for the looks. Especially in a concept phone where they can clearly show that the water in there is moving.
@@martorth If anything, the bubbles could be steam. More likely either sloppiness or design. Looks cool, though.
@@vondahe Steam? This is not a motor from a car that has to be cooled :D
I feel like it’s the same as concept cars, it may not be commercially viable, but it does push the boundaries of the industry and can put some very creative ideas out there and lead to meaningful innovations
Marques has returned and we couldn’t be any more ecstatic. His tech reviews are always the best.
2:04 to 2:11 Best moment of the video!

My Heart: It's MKBHD therapy ❤️
The concept phones are the one's keeping it interesting it shows how much effort is put to make the consumers buy their products and it's always interesting. If the "concept" of multiple camera's on a phone didn't hit we may not have seen them, same for fold and so many other innovations in tech and yeah type c charging port in an iPhone isn't a "concept"😂😂
Everyone is better than the iPhone in innovation.
I mean the fact that these are “conceptual” ideas are just insane. You’re holding possibly revolutionary tech in your hand. Mind blowing to be honest
What processing in a phone requires liquid cooling ?

Would love to see them try to sell the 3 to 4 additional FPS in an Apple-like graph that no one can really get behind

As always your productions are super high end, and it's obvious you all worked hard on this.
I just loved his video description 😂
A slab of copper heatsink grid will probably passive cool faster than any active cooling solution.
Also, as Linus showed, the pumps and water cooling didn't add to the size by very much at all
Keep concepts coming! Not a time to stop :D
Your are the #1 when it comes to video quality on youtube. When are we getting MKBHDR! that's right HDR if you upgrade then others will most phones can do hdr! make it a thing! why not

You should try the red magic phone
Well, as Chinese are not allow to make their own chips anymore, a few degrees of cooling or some “out of the box" thinking are basicly all they can do to differentiate their products.
IMO the liquid cooling can’t work in the mobile, exchange of heat will always be a problem
THAT ROLLABLE concept is super nice!!!
God forbid you crack the back of the phone with water flowing through it.
Well explained
4:01 If only he knew...
A world without innovation would be very dull.
Been testing the phone for 3 weeks now is biggest flex!
I think the camera bump looks much better in this circle-only style than the wraparound hybrid of the standard Oneplus 11
These really excites me, I hope they don’t STOP!
