    So i just came across your videos an hour ago and I am hooked. First, I want to thank you for sharing your insight, for students like myself who are about to graduate with their bachelor's degree in accounting I find these videos relaxing. Second, I am a financial accounting major, about to graduate in May and I am not interested in getting my CPA. I am more interested in a 9-5 accounting position (besides busy season). I am kind of loss on where to look for jobs, I feel as if everyone wants a CPA or the hours completed. Do you have any insight on the next steps I should be taking when I graduate, or even steps I can take as of right now to help the process along? Thank you so much!!!

    Great advice Stephanie. I 100% agree with you how important our time is. I am currently learning to say no to others and not feel bad for it. I am trying to work on my career and goals as you stated and my family is constantly harassing me saying your always studying, or doing school. Well I take 20 credit hours and have been since I started a little over a year ago. I have a 20 year who I am trying to get through college as well as a husband who has health issues I deal with. So like you, no to don't want to waste my time, I want to work on my goals and spend time with my spouse and child. I go to bed at 9pm and am usually up by 5:30 am so I can spend time doing what I love and get my stuff done also. Glad to see your doing well and thanks again for all the great info your sharing with us. I am excited for my accounting career!!

    Hi Stephie, thanks for your content. Have you heard of any law changes regarding 100 hours weeks? I heard recently that some laws are on the table regarding this issue (I believe it came out of the retail management sector). I'm 45 and start on my bachelor's, hopefully at Yale after this year, and simply won't pull 100 hour weeks on salary with no compensation. That's not happening.

    I have kind of a few specific questions. Does the university you complete the cpa requirements matter. Also my university doesn't have an accounting degree, but it offers all of the accounting classes, but they are all under the Econ title/department listing. Does graduating with an Economic degree rather than an accounting affect job opportunities in the accounting field. Lastly what do you know about Deloitte, they are one of the firms coming to my university in the fall, like what do they look/ask from their applicants?

    • @oliverlikescheetos
      @oliverlikescheetos 8 років тому +3

      It doesn't matter if your major isn't accounting. If you have the classes and the firms know you're on the path to CPA after graduation, you're good. My college UC Berkeley, doesn't have an accounting major but the Big 4 still recruit here.

    Hey lady, I know this is an old video lol, but I wanted to ask if you can share some advice to go about looking for an internship particularly with the big 4. I have basically left my schedule open to get an internship with MTA in NYC. and no luck. I am a member of an organization that is having a convention in Dallas, and PWC contacted me to secure an interview, but it's only for the convention. Sigh. I'm nervous about interning at one of the big 4's without interning anywhere else. And I really don't know how to get an internship. Any advice is appreciated :)

    How much can i expect to start making with a CPA, no experience, at a mid-tier or small firm? is it hard to move up in the ranks? is it competitive generally?

    • @rebeccataylor1729
      @rebeccataylor1729 8 років тому

      $50k+ as an A1 :) Promotion tracks are generally structured but can be accelerated for exceptional work. Yearly raises, promotions every 2-3 years until you hit manager!

    • @Deism4life
      @Deism4life 8 років тому

      Thanks for replying! what do I do if an employer asks me how much I expect to make, I say $50K, and they just say "that's too high for someone who doesn't have the experience" and then tries to rip me off for a lower pay? i'm always concerned that would happen.

    • @rebeccataylor1729
      @rebeccataylor1729 8 років тому

      $50k is slightly below the industry average in my area for a student straight out of college. So they won't even be a CPA yet, still needing the hours to be certified! I'm not sure where you are living, but I would be shocked if they said it was too high, because it is a conservative/fair pay rate (again depending on the cost of living in your area). But if they said something along those lines, I would just respond that you are open to options and other incentives (compensation packages vary widely between firms!), but that you know the work is demanding and you've worked hard to get your degrees and you plan to be committed to the company so you hope to be compensated fairly!

    • @Deism4life
      @Deism4life 8 років тому

  • @SunnySharma-ip1xn

    • @rebeccataylor1729
      @rebeccataylor1729 8 років тому +2

      Unless you are an intern, you are likely on a salary basis at a major public firm! But, bonuses are often based on over time hours/billable hours and can be quite hefty.

    I'm considering sitting for the CPA. I have no intentions of owning my own business. And I feel I will get a lot more responsibilities, a lot more stress and not enough more money for the CPA credentials. So that is holding me back. Any insights on that? Just another thing I'm in a small town, less opportunities, salaries are not that great anyway. I have no intention of moving to a bigger city.

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  8 років тому

      +brasnany I would say based on what you've outlined, it probably wouldn't make sense to spend the money & time on studying for a CPA license. In larger areas, a CPA license could lead to higher salaries and opportunities but if you intend to stay in your town, I wouldn't if I were in your shoes. Maybe later in life you'll change your mind and can always get it then... just may not make sense to do so now and keep up with the continuing education requirements based on what you've said.

    Hey Stephanie! Very informative video. Been hearing a lot of things where you really have to sacrifice a lot just for Big 4.
    Oh i was the person back a few videos ago that decided to do Accounting as 2nd degree ^^
    So now i have the classes registered for Summer and Fall. I'm kinda eager to start a new career and do everything i can to be successful. Technically i can finish it in 2 years for BS degree. I decided i'll just do BS degree since BA may not be enough.
    I have a question. Should i get an internship for Accounting this Summer or next year Summer? Since i still don't have a lot of background on the subject yet. Should i just apply next year once i have more classes down the line? I have a full 15 credit course so that's why i can finish it asap.
    Also i've been reading some basic accounting principals books. Do you think i should start reviewing for Accounting software as well as other programs like brushing up my Excel skills. When should i also start reviewing for CPA?? I read they are changing a lot of stuff in 2017. I'm preparing for what's in store in the future.
    I'm glad to hear that, despite all the hours taking a toll at you at Big 4. You said you really learned a lot when you went out.
    Keep up the videos!! Really enjoy an insight on what it's like being a CPA and Accountant.

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  8 років тому

      +Chrom Zero Hi there! If you can handle an internship with your course load this year, I'd say go for an internship this summer. I did my internship without doing an audit class, I think I had done intermediate accounting. It helps to have practical experience as you are doing your classes, helps the concepts stick. I think it's good to get proficient at Excel although you will pick that up on the job. CPA review, I'd start studying once you become eligible so you can retain the information. Especially with the exam changing next year. Hope this helps!

    • @chromzero915
      @chromzero915 8 років тому

      Thanks Stephienese!! Though after talking to my internship coordinator. She recommended me to just finish my summer classes. Since i'll be taking both Accounting Principles I and II on the summer. And it's best to just concentrate on the classes first since i never had any experience on both subjects.
      One good thing is i have recently met a new friend who understands my situation. He will try to enroll me in their organization and help me develop communication skills as well as find internships along the way. But it's probably going to be fall since there will be no meetings this summer.
      In the meanwhile, I'm gearing up and preparing everything i can to retain everything. I already started reading my book and wow. It's a lot of information and things you need to remember.
      Thanks! I'll study Excel for sure in order to develop these skills. I'll be watching your videos from now on if you don't mind XD
