Well something DID happen. It didn't take long that day. Third time IS the charm. Almost did it twice, too! That second one was shaped like a crappie, it was so round. Congrats!!
Ya, crazy cold fronts. I never know how that will effect the fishing in the fall. Sometimes it turns out like this. That last fish had the craziest proportions. Certainly one that has a chance to grow past state record size. Thank you!
Love to see it man! Born in IC ... Hard to believe how crazy it can get in the river. Had an epic morning last summer by dairy Queen. Great to see people I've met in your videos. 😂
@@styrofoamned Ya it’s a pretty cool place. There are a lot of regulars down there that have been fishing this spot for many years. Say hi if you see me down there. Thanks for watching!
You were right about being worth the wait! I was laughing out loud over your new PB, like "oh, well, seems like a nice fish. Wait...what? 17.6..." Congrats, Sir. You earned that joy.
It would have been nice to catch it in the light as the pictures using my iphone light don't really do it justice but I'll take it how I can get it. I usually try not to use a light when I'm fishing in the early morning. I have a superstition that the light spooks the fish (as well as other animals that might be fun to look at). However, after several of my biggest catches this fall came in the pitch dark I did start carrying a head lamp for filming purposes. Thanks for watching as usual!
My local lake/reservoir/spillway, doesn't have wipers. I had no idea they got to those sizes. IDNR did start stocking pure striped bass around 2018. Big fish are turning up now. I'll be trying for them come spring with a rod setup similar to what you're using. Thanks!
Congrats on your new PB! An amazing 3 day run of Wiper fishing. You're little slice of Heaven doesn't look too bad! I bet there is an even bigger one there waiting for you in the future.
Thanks, it sure seems like someone is going to pull out a 20lb from there sometime. The fact that there were three 15+ fish in there and probably plenty more that I didn't catch suggests to me that there are bigger fish lurking. Fishing heaven indeed!
@@Kentuckytacklebox-g3k thanks! It was really interesting how the small wipers that I usually catch seem to have left the spillway and only big ones were there. Maybe the big ones chased them out.
Thanks, I hope I can catch some stripers sometime in the future. They look like a blast to catch! Wipers are awesome. They stop growing longer at some point and start getting tall and thick. Thanks for watching!
@ if your ever on the east coast in spring or fall 40lb stripers are not uncommon. They typically run to warmer water when a cold front hits, i like going after them during the fall run when its that first nice cold more rain the better. I wonder if the wiper has that going on here.
@@PizzaShrimp Sounds good, thanks for the tips. A 40lber would be crazy! The wiper bite tends to get really good once the weather starts to suddenly change in the fall similar to what you describe for pure stripers. This was one of the first really cold mornings of the fall and that probably triggered this fire bite.
I was on Palo this summer catching big walleye and bass one morning and left to get some work done. I should have stayed out. It was one of those days I could have gotten into something really good.
Dude that is crazy, it's crazy to see that length affects weight way more than their belly mass. If that 17.6 let would've had a shape like that 15lber but it's own length I think it would've been a state record, congrats!!
I think it would be much easier to get a state record in the Spring. Some of these fish could put on several lbs of egg weight. Maybe you can get a 20 lb pre-spawner.
22.2 lbs is crazy. I think our state record is 19.6 lbs. I know several people have gotten very close to breaking that this past year. Your dam sounds like it can grow the giants!

WOW Man that's awesome congrats!!! I don't think i would of made it to work after catching 3 DDs. I can't wait to catch my first DD wiper!
Thanks, these wipers are fun no matter what the size but I hope you get a DD this year!
@BackroadsAngling yea they truly are no matter the size!

Man these videos make me jealous. Can’t say it enough, these are easily the best fishing vids on UA-cam. Keep em coming!!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Donkey day and congrats man, I haven't gotten on a good spillway bite for wipers in a while. Boat has taken over my life 😅
Thanks! Ya, I know you are addicted to that boat life now. I don't blame you it looks fun.
Your more dedicated than most so you deserve it well done!
Thanks, I have put a lot of time in at this spot and the knowledge gained definitely pays off over time. Much appreciated!
Absolute madness 🔥🔥🔥. You are living my dream 😂
@@EngineeringHooksets thanks! You’ve got a pretty good thing going with those big stripers!
@@BackroadsAngling Eh, my first 4 trips were great. But I've been skunked my last 3 times there. May have just been a good week.
They'll be back!

man i wished i lived close to this spillway. amazing hogs! awesome vids as always
Thanks, it's a good trophy spot. I appreciate you watching!
Congrats that was Epic. Your catching Trophies without a net that Will Come back and get you. Bring your net brother Happy Fishing
Thanks, you're right I'm living on the edge landing these fish without a net. Maybe 2025 will be the year I start using one.
awesome video! you'd love to get on some double digit stripers, wish we had wipers over here in maryland, they look like TANKS.

Shorts in winter in Iowa. Just like Coach Caskey.
I definitely regretted it on this day. I wasn't prepared for the brutal wind!
congrats on the monster

My local dam holds our state record. 22.2. My biggest is 15. The run will start in April. Should come on up. It also holds state record walleye also!

Fyi we catch wipers all night long! Its better at night. 👍
Same, especially in the fall when the temps are dropping. My best trip was in November, caught one double digit and a lot of 7-9lbers
I've had a few good night bites in the past for wipers at other locations but usually at this spot they wait until first light. Thanks for watching!
