Any rumors what screen could be used on the quest 4. I hope it is at least a qled mini led.

If their only goal is to sell as many headsets as possible than there will be no Quest 4, but rather a quest 4s.

Puffin prototype at 100 grams sounds doable with their holographic pancake lenses? We've seen that internal render of Metas concept headset already, with the reverse passthrough on the visor, open sides, varifocals and all.
Off loading the battery AND computer is certainly interesting.

WRT alternatives to keyboard input, I'm hopeful throat/subvocalization mics will continue to get better so that, when paired with speech to text, silent input will be possible in public without a keyboard.

I think Microsoft is missing a golden opportunity to get into this race. All they would have to do is contract with Guy Godin to port Virtual Desktop to the Xbox, throw some money at a few developers for a couple of kick-ass exclusives, and just like that Microsoft is in the game. They don't need to invest in their own hardware, just use exactly the same model they use for Windows. Focus on the software and let other people develop the hardware. If this were to happen, I think Xbox would instantly be the new front runner in console VR due to the fact that it would be accessible by any headset that can run Virtual Desktop. It would be great for Meta too, as the Quest 3 would now be the one headset to rule them all, giving you access to their own library, PCVR, and now XBVR. That might even give Sony a wakeup call and get them to kickstart some new initiatives. Microsoft has more money than even Meta. I can easily seem them offering a deal like "buy HaloVR, get a $100 discount coupon for a Quest 3 or Quest S. Hell they're so rich they could throw the headset in free, it would still be cheaper than R&D for their own headset. I doubt it will happen, but I think it would put VR over the top if it did.

I agree about the casting from child account. I recently went through this setting up a child account for my son. Casting from child account only casts to a chrome web browser it won’t cast to the phone app. Seams like that would be a necessary safety feature. I’m pretty tech savvy and a lot of the parental control controls are not user friendly at all. No wonder some parents just don’t bother

1:47:39 I use my Quest 3 in Mixed Reality all the time to clean my house while watching UA-cam and Disney+, which frees up my hands for cleaning
Typically, I use Virtual Desktop using my PCs browser when I do this, as Meta’s browser fades away if I’m too physically far away from my virtual display

I think Meta could make 'all day' full AR glasses by using a battery puck to periodically quick charge the glasses for a few minutes every few hours throughout the day. Perhaps some of the radios or even some of the compute could also live in the puck. The glasses would wirelessly connect to the puck and the puck would connect to the world. Not ideal but a tradeoff I and I think enough others would accept to speed the adoption of AR glasses "like in the movies".

what's the official VR download bingo? This episode was tough for my liver. I downed a big shot when Ian mentioned the Joycons when talking about the Apple Watch. Walkabout was mentioned a couple of times as well!

Ultralight headsets interest me. Never been able to make the Quest 2 or 3 feel comfortable, it irritates me all the time. Doesn't stop me using them, but I know many people can't put up with them.

So you guys talked about the AI and Operating Systems a bit. I’m going to pivot then to something I asked Ian about the other day in Walkabout Mini Golf, the idea of a Generative Operating Engine
What would be necessary for LLM, Operating Systems, and Game Engines convolve into the a “Generative Operating Engine”? What I mean by this is; if I want to play a video game, Skyrim for example, I would have to download the entire game from a server. However with a “Generative Operating Engine” I would make a basic request like, “…I want to play Skyrim”, and the GOE would send that basic request to an external server, and that server would respond with the necessary prompt instructions for the GOE to understand how build the game Skyrim on my device, but custom tailored for my hardware profile.

    • @ArlenKundert
      @ArlenKundert 14 днів тому

A hypothetical "Generative Operating Engine" (GOE) could offer a range of advanced utilities, enhancing the gaming experience and broader applications. Here are some theoretical utilities it might provide:
      1. **Dynamic Content Creation:**
      - **Custom Game Worlds:** Users could request and generate custom game worlds tailored to their preferences, including unique landscapes, quests, and characters.
      - **Real-Time Updates:** The GOE could dynamically update game content based on player actions, current trends, or seasonal events.
      2. **Adaptive Performance Optimization:**
      - **Hardware Adaptation:** The GOE could optimize game performance by adapting content and graphical settings in real time based on the user's hardware profile.
      - **Efficient Resource Management:** It would intelligently manage CPU, GPU, and memory resources to ensure smooth gameplay.
      3. **Personalized Experiences:**
      - **Tailored Gameplay:** It could generate personalized gameplay experiences based on individual play styles, preferences, and history.
      - **AI-Driven NPCs:** Non-playable characters (NPCs) could adapt their behavior and dialogue based on player interactions and choices.
      4. **Flexible Development Tools:**
      - **Real-Time Prototyping:** Game developers could use the GOE for rapid prototyping, instantly generating and testing new game features and mechanics.
      - **Dynamic Testing:** The GOE could facilitate dynamic testing environments where developers can simulate various scenarios and player interactions.
      5. **Enhanced User Interface:**
      - **Natural Language Interaction:** Users could interact with the GOE through natural language commands to create or modify games, reducing the need for complex menus and interfaces.
      - **Interactive Feedback:** It would provide real-time feedback and suggestions during content creation and gameplay, enhancing user engagement.
      6. **Streamlined Distribution:**
      - **On-Demand Game Generation:** Instead of downloading large game files, users could generate and play games on demand, potentially reducing storage requirements and download times.
      - **Modular Content Delivery:** It could fetch and integrate modular content from external servers, allowing for up-to-date and expanded game experiences without large initial downloads.
      7. **Educational and Training Applications:**
      - **Custom Simulations:** It could create tailored simulations for educational purposes or training scenarios, adapting to specific learning objectives or skill development needs.
      - **Interactive Learning:** Users could interact with educational content in a gamified format, making learning more engaging and effective.
      8. **Creative and Artistic Tools:**
      - **Collaborative Creation:** Artists and designers could collaborate in real time on generating game content, with the GOE handling complex aspects of the design process.
      - **Procedural Art Generation:** It could generate unique art assets, such as textures or character models, based on user-defined parameters.
In essence, a GOE could revolutionize not just gaming but also content creation, user experience, and interactive entertainment by providing highly adaptive, personalized, and efficient solutions.

I stayed away from smartwatches for a few years after looking to buy one was hugely disappointed that the battery life still blows. Ended up buying a galaxy watch 5 pro. 3 day battery life should be the minimum.

I love you Ian, but you should find a way to relax more. You have this frustrated tone going on that overshadows the joy you are trying to foster for the VR community. You aren't wrong, I just think you need to find a way to balance your mood. I can tell you are trying to find the positives, and certainly real life is not just a picnic, but we need to maintain the optimism for the future as well. Anyway, you are doing a great job keeping the conversation going, I enjoy listening to your shows each week. Keep up the good work.

18:15 Meta Quest 2 had that over a year ago. Its possible to turn on that when people come into your space, whether that be dogs or people it will visualise a shape of them in the headset. Unless its gone... It was there in the boundary settings. Will look later and edit this post.
