I met Bill when he was working out of his garage. I brought him my Tama Superstars for refinishing in Candy Apple Red and some bearing edge tweeks. Amazing job. I believe his first gig was a painter at Drum Workshop. I later bought a Pork Pie kit that smoked my Tama’s. Their thrones are the best. I once sent him a message how much I loved his work. Got a bunch of swag in the mail a few weeks later. Much Respect.
FINALLY a fair review and demo of a Pork Pie set. All the rest of them out there, including some made by the company itself, were not very informative or well-produced. Another great job by Nick D'Virgilio.
I love PP drums. I had a cheap Asian Luan kit re-edged by Bill Detamore back in 2013 and it made it sound insanely good. But really, Nick is such a great drummer in these Sweetwater vids. Sweetwater should have him do longer vids of him just performing on these kits.
You can make pretty much any kit sound good with proper tuning, heads and recording gear.. it's the drummer that makes the difference. Yes this is a boring, depressing comment but it's true.
Definitely agree, but a kit should reflect the player too, different sizes/tunings can help manipulate a kit to have “your” sound. Like over the years I have purchased, traded, and sold items to help me create my perfect kit. Still always wanting to try new things but I do have “a sound”
Let's not forget where the shallower depth on your Kik drums the beater comes back quicker so you're able to do double strokes with ease as compared to a deeper kick drum.
As always great review. The drums sound great. The only complaint that I had was I thought the drums should have been at a higher level in the mix. Felt I had to listen too hard to hear them. Love the sound of the snare, thought the kick drum sounded a little dead. But definitely would have been great in a small room or church.
I wish you guys had more Pork Pie drum sets. I have to buy from Guitar Center to get some of their higher end drums but it's not the same as ordering with Sweetwater.
I think you can get that same snare with the usual Pork Pie "hourglass" lugs. Bill (CEO) is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in the industry. Very accommodating. He will pretty much make you anything you want.
those lugs are only for this shell pack. they make ones without it like i have two pork pie snares and one has tube lugs and the other with the standard porkpie ones
I have to be honest. I’ve been watching Nick demo a lot of kits lately & I’ve been on the fence between a Tama Starclassic, Mapex Saturn V or a Mapex Armory kit but these drums, I don’t know if it’s the way they’re mic’ed up or the heads he’s using, sound better. I prefer the sound interval from 13” to 16” more than 12” to 16”. This kit has those classic sizes. I just wish that they offered it in more than one color.
I don't own a lot of acoustic snare, I have converted over to electronic drums for the time being. That being said I bough a vented 13x7 pork pie snare and slapped some sound control snares and a coated hd dry and hands down has become my favorite acoustic snare.. soooooooooooooooooo drrrrrrryyyyyyyyy.
Hey Nick I'm looking to buy a drum head my pork pie snare...if you can get back very soon ,if u have time...what batter and redo head do you recommend...much appreciated
Hey, Rowan. Thanks so much for your interest. Recommending heads is tricky without knowing what style of music you play. My personal favorite is very traditional - Coated Remo Ambassador on top and a Hazy Remo Ambassador on the bottom. I hope this helps. Jason Thiele, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1391, jason_thiele@sweetwater.com
So far so good. I had to go through and tighten up all the lug screws because they were assembled pretty loose and lube the tension rods (which really is minimal and should be done/ checked either way). I got it in blue sparkle with a 13×7 snare, 12, 16 toms and 20x18 kick. Head replacement is a must (comes with the crappy Remo UT's) which was not a big deal thanks to the closeout price. Tunes up easy and holds it well so far. I'm happy with it.
Hello, Joe! The drum heads that come on the kit are imported Remos with the Pork Pie logo on them. Thanks for your interest! Mike Wuchter, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (260) 247-8114
Thanks so much for the inquiry, Jose. That actually is a unique kit we are having made for us with mahogany/birch shells and that exclusive Firethorn Red Lacquer. It is a very special kit!! Let me know if you have other questions, happy to help. Derek Senestraro, Senior Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1243, derek_senestraro@sweetwater.com
I used to have a custom made pork pie maple kit I bought at guitar center and was cool but then I bought a tama starclassic bb and my god I could tell a huge difference in tone, volume, build quality, hardware on the kit and the innovations, much better mounting system and mounting systems, floor tom legs and bass drum Spurs but most importanly the sound and feel was just absolutely mind blowing compared to the pork pie. Most important piece of info is that my pork pie kit was a 3 piece whichran me 2,000 bucks. The tama kit is a 5 piece and got the exact same sizes and finish I wanted for 1900 shipped straight from the tama warehouse. It’s just not even a competition. I also bought a 5!piece tama silverstar as a gigging kit for 500 bucks which destroys my old pork pie kit as well. And they the tama superstars which are also a mid range cheap price with amazing sound and quality. But Starclassics are just the best drums in the world for me. I just don’t get why anyone would pay for a custom kit from a smaller company when you can get 10 times better quality from a bigger drum brand like tama or other big brands. But that’s just my opinion. Some people just love the boutique style custom drums from small companies but I’ll take the much better build quality and cheaper price from a tama anyday. Also much easier to get replacement parts for any part of the kit or add ons from bigger brands. That’s my opinion but don’t get me wrong pork pie is a good custom company, better than all those other custom small companies.
Totigerus sadly yes I am but as a consumer I’m not worried about being patriotic and sticking with a small USA or even bigger USA companies. I go with what’s the best deal and best gear in general where I get every pennies worth and what sounds feels and looks the best. Everyone is different and some people just love smaller companies or American companies which is cool, it would suck if the whole world played the same kit and same company. But for me tama just kills everyone with their prices on most of their kits outside the star range.
kodiak wild I guess it would be Walmart vs smaller companies if it was a Walmart with Walmart prices with Whole Foods quality. ( I know Walmart sells more than food but you get my point ) lolll.
That's interesting. I have owned numerous Tama snares and one Tama kit over my lifetime of drumming. And I now own two Pork Pie snare drums. And I wouldn't trade those two snares for all of the Tama snares I've ever heard...much less the ones that I've owned. Different strokes.
Hello, Scott. Happy to help! I would assume that as well, but I'm not 100% sure. Let me shoot an email to Pork Pie and see what I can find out for you. Thanks for the message! Derek Senestraro, Sweetwater Senior Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 Ext. 1243
Hi again, Scott. Got the final word from Pork Pie on this, here is what they said: "The bearing edges on all Little Squealer drums are a 45 degree on the inside of the drum with a round over counter cut on the outside of the shell." I hope that is helpful for you, and if you have other questions or want to talk about the subtleties of bearing edges, I'd love to chat. Underrated brand tbh, I've got a PP snare and has sounded consistently fantastic for a decade without a single skin replacement
Nick could make Tupperware sound GOOD!!!
Chris Wright Nick could make me buy Tupperware 🤣
Chris Wright That’s what I started on. I used to fill them with water to change the pitch. I jammed to Kiss albums as a kid.
You ain’t wrong!!!!!!! Heck, you could set up a kit from junk for him and it would sound amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently he has here! The only person to make these sound good is Tim Alexander.
@Derek Frampton 😆 yep! Chopsticks were my weapon of choice 😉
Nick, you are a badass drummer.
I’ve been using that same pork pie throne for 7 years it’s still as good as when I bought it. And I use it a lot. Really great quality.
FINALLY a fair review and demo of a Pork Pie set. All the rest of them out there, including some made by the company itself, were not very informative or well-produced. Another great job by Nick D'Virgilio.
This guy looks constantly amazed by every stroke he plays.

damn, these are one of the best sounding drums I ever heard
I have that snare, and I love it , it just sounds so good! I've had it ever since I was in 4th grade, and I still love it
Great kit and 1 of the best drummers on Earth!!
Thank you Derek. I appreciate you getting back to me.
Great sounding kit...Pork Pie Drums have become the 'Go To" for custom drums.
Those toms are tuned so well!
Awesome sound and awesome drumming!
Are you guys every going to carry more of there pork pie drums? I really want a 2 up 2 down set up of the Blue Fade Dip kit they have. lol
Kick drums at 14X22 or 14x22 allow for much better beater bounce or control, in my opinion. Sweet kit. Nick killing it as usual.
Glad to see a 13 inch rack tom, those are fairly rare to see with everyone playing all even sizes nowadays...
haha that's just not true....13's are quite common, bruh
Great kit and lots of depth in this review. Love the backing tracks as well.
Let's not forget where the shallower depth on your Kik drums the beater comes back quicker so you're able to do double strokes with ease as compared to a deeper kick drum.
Wow!!!Incredible drum set man!!!😀
i wouldnt have expected a pork pie kit to sound this good
good configuration like my old big R Rogers
Great technique!
Drums sound awesome!

The snare sounds yummy.
sir, you forgot about the drum throne..
When are y'all going to do a review of the ATV aDrums?
Sounds fantastic, lovely carry ,also sounds a lot different to any thing I've heard 👌
Id love to try out that snare. But im not a fan of the lugs..
i thought so..

I have a pork pie little squealer steel snare . I use it as a back up snare. But I must say it has great projection of sound.
The sound of Primus!!!
Whoo!
Those EV mics are the best tom mics ever. Sound great on guitar too.
I don't own a lot of acoustic snare, I have converted over to electronic drums for the time being. Did we get to see the throne ?
Tim Alexander of primus uses pork pie
He did, been with Tama for years now.
Great Video. I would like see some Pearl products with Nick 😁
Nick has already done a couple of videos on the Pearl Music City Custom. Look them up. Really good stuff.
Hey Nick I'm looking to buy a drum head my pork pie snare...if you can get back very soon ,if u have time...what batter and redo head do you recommend...much appreciated
I still have the stock reso head on my pork pie snare but for batter heads I use Evans HD dry

so big and warm and love that snare, too bad you get this kit anymore
I'm having a hard time deciding between this or the PDP wood hoop.
Jonathan Bormann Both great kits
@@galleryofrogues I actually went with a Crush Sublime E3. Got it on closeout for 1/2 price

Nick wasn't lying when he said he really likes red drumkits
If you guys wanna see Nick SHRED on guitar, check out his Instagram account!!
Dude....do a video on the Hip Pig set....
Dude rocks
Pretty good kid for sound 👌
Is there a 6 peace or 5 peace shell pack?
Aren’t Pork Pie making the new Rogers snares ?
The snare's mic aint to sm57. Can someone tell me which mic is it?
What wood is used for the shells? They sound incredible
50/50 mahogany and birch... a pretty unique combination.
Dave McCall nice one, they sound great on headphones! Was considering buying a star classic but these just threw a spanner in the works......mmmm
I'm out to buy it in an HR or so...👍
sounds tasty. now i'm hungry
Eat to the beat homie
@@adderon done and done... :^V
sorry cant get this kit anymore
Weird there is no mention of the shell construction at all.
The website says its mahogany and birch shells 50/50
@@kwakudarko4546 that would probably be Philippine mahogany, not real mahogany, like African.
@@NEALBABBITT yeah👍
Are the factory heads Remo USA, or Remo import?

Forgot to review the throne
Snare with SM57 ??
The Shure SM57 has been the go-to snare mic since...forever.
No no. In the video EV mic on snare... Pay attention.
No, look the video... The description is wrong because the EV mic is on snare too.
Looks like the ND44 because the pivoting neck...
They sound like my Premier Genista kit
They sound best low tuning.
KICK ASS tom and floor tom
\m/
This guy could sell drums made of ice to folks at the North Pole.
Those toms are wide open, without that plastic tone.
😎👍💗🇺🇸🐽 🥁🔥🎼 🔊BILL!!!
Bill does outstanding work!
The godfather of drum customization!
I'm having déjà-vu....
Is it just me or do those drums look orange
It’s just you
PTHRofficial It's you.
kind of a burnt orange+
A lillll bit
Hi ya doin everybody
Quite nicely usually
Nice, but easier to hear without the music.
Great drumming and drums....awful music 😬
Love steel snares...a lot of drive.
Wrong, this kit was not made in LA or by Bill. Say it with me... China.
Honestly not the bigest fan of this kits sound
these vids were soooo much better when they weren't so cleanly edited and didnt have crappy music playing over the drums
Pork pie has to be the worst possible name for a drum company
Too much camera movement!!!!! Making me nauseous.
