17:03 I had no idea you were such a talented astrophotographer and accomplished astronaut! Quite a lot of hurdles, but worth it for such an interesting little machine! Nice work :)
What a cool old machine, so different and so ahead of its time in many ways. Shame about the KB, will it run 98 (maybe on a new/ different HDD) to see if that might have drivers for the KB given that by then such things were more common than they would have been in 95. Seeing that install screen took me back more years than I care to remember, many thousands of times I saw that 😂😂😂
I never really used 95 much, jumped from 3.1/DOS to 98 back in the day. But I quite like it. It’s just an operating system, nothing more, nothing less. It doesn’t focus its energy elsewhere, it just does what it’s supposed to do. I like your 98 idea, I did wonder if that might be the solution. I also noticed if I browse the rescued hard drive image on my iMac it shows the Japanese characters properly so I might use the translate feature on my phone and see if anything relates to the keyboard.
@@TheBasementChannel I agree about 95, it was a great idea with no bloat,, then they screwed it up - top Idea using the Mac and translator (apologies as Im so used to dealing with windows users) I reckon the info you / wee need is out there on some dark dusty corner of the web and it will just take some enthusiastic digital spelunking to find it - best of luck

Windows from back then, a western distro, would NEVER be able to run JP software well, or install it, sometimes. Why? Well, and I speak from experience trying to communicate with friends in Japan in the late 90s, a thing that was an utter hell until Unicode became a thing that everyone used... Software was encoded in Japan in S-JIS (sometimes EUC, a different encoding), as well as webs. Western system distros used ANSI encoding. Not compatible at all, hence the garbled text or just squares. And the kicker is that, many times, JP devs would use Japanese characters for hard drive install folders in the code. And they were HARD CODED. And a western system could NOT interpret them, so it would not install certain pieces of software from installers created in Japan. It was a complete, total and utter goat fornication. When Vista and later W7, on the window side came by, things became unified all across the world as everything would be encoded or converted to UNICODE. Better coding practices in Japan, such as not creating hard coded folders in non-latin alphabet characters, also helped. Myself, one of the reasons I switched then to Mac is that Mac had always been encoding-agnostic and would have all languages in the installer, which meant that soft released in JP would ALSO have the installer code in English, so you'd never get weird folder name issues. Also I refused to use Vista, bc it was crap. But yeah, trying to send and receive e-mail in the w95, 98, 2000 and XP era in Japanese using a western language version of windows was an utter nightmare. One wrongly sent or pasted byte would basically render the whole message unreadable, to the point that I remember, for years, using Notepad, and a very basic IME (not even the Windows one, as it was not included and I had no means of getting it, I'm talking about an early version of NJSTAR, which was crap), and screen capture, sending my letters as GIF files. Go figure. We have come such a long way.
Ha wow that’s really interesting, I never really thought about it as I was only ever in English speaking countries during this time. Thanks for sharing!

Ha, thanks! The rocket rental was pricy!
Love it! I love the power supply mod too! Be interesting to see what you do with it. What kind of graphics does it have?
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that in the video, it’s got an ATI Rage LT onboard. 👍
Nice retro PC review!
Thanks!
Surugaya is one of the best second hand electronics dealers in Japan I think.
Aha, good to know.
Pity the remote keyboard didn't work, but nice to see the Model M get some screen time.
I can’t hear this comment over all the clicking 🤣

I know right! First thing I thought of, except it predates the Xbox by 4 years 😆
