  • Which pigments should you look for if you want to paint with a RYB color theory palette, and more importantly, which are the advantages and disadvantages to choosing a given pigment?
Let's nerd out on pigment and look at some of my favorites - all excellent options for painting with RYB color theory - in opaque paints.
    HIGHLIGHTS:
2:34 - Primary yellows, pros and cons of different ones
9:40 - Primary Reds, pros and cons of different ones
14:49- Primary Blues, pros and cons of different ones
If you want to use acrylic, watercolor, or gouache and mix in a controlled and consistent way, here are some excellent choices.
Cut costs - Lower your studio toxicity - Choose classic paints with phenomenal tinting strength and clean color to last the ages - whatever you want to accomplish with paint, you've got great choices in RYB
LESS TOXIC: Benzimidazolone yellow - Pyrrol Red - Ultramarine Blue
LOW COST: Hansa Yellow Light - Napthol Red - Ultramarine Blue
CLASSIC BRIGHTS: Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red Medium, Cobalt Blue
CLASSIC FULL-VALUE: Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Red Light, Ultramarine Blue
PUNCHY AND MODERN: Pthalo Red Shade, Napthol Red, Arylide Yellow 174
What's your favorite RYB? Have I missed one you love? Let me know below!
DONT FORGET: PW6 - titanium white. I use about 4:1 between white and colors and I really make an effort to keep white out of the mix. It's going to be the paint you use MOST.
