    Awesome video man. I'm still a little off about this but I do want to get rid of my clutch fan. When it sits and I have to go in a hurry it sounds like a semi. My friends look at me like " the hell was that " lol.

    @arandao11 Thanks for watching. You have a couple of choices, the way I do it is with my air chisel to impact the nut loose and then spin it off by hand. The other options is to rent the tool (spanner tool) from your local auto parts store. Just ask them for the tool to remove the clutch fan assembly. There are other ways, but they risk damaging your actual fan blades. The best way is to rent/buy the spanner tool so that you can lock the fan in place, then you will be able to loosen the nut.

    @spunkzilla123 Thanks for the comment and for the thermostat tip! I am going to try that out. I like my electric fan, but I think I am going to go with a dual 11" SPAL (Part#: 30102052). I found that this Texas heat was really hard on my dakota with just one fan. But with a dual setup and the thermostat I am curious to see how it does. I will make a video of the dual fan install when I get the part in. Thanks again for watching and the tip!

    @rerc85 Thanks for the comment! That is a very good question, most folks that do this modification usually buy aftermarket pieces (Jeggs, JC Whitney...) to hold the washer fluid and radiator overflow. Some folks have even built their own using PVC piping. For me, I just left the factory upper and lower fan shroud in place, so I could continue to use the washer fluid reservoir and radiator overflow reservoir.

    Nice Job. I'm thinking about doing the same swap on my 360 powered '73 Dart. Just not sure yet what parts or brands to use. That fan must pull a lot of air, it seems to only cover about 60% of the radiator.
    Most dual fan set-ups don't fit my radiator, but I live in a colder climate than Texas so a single fan should be ok I guess. Good luck.

    @tim4766n Interesting question, thank you for posting. In all my dealings with the durangos and dakotas I have not seen a pulley that was removable. The water pump and pulley should be one assembly, in which case you can just leave the threads at the end of the pulley exposed. Some folks buy after market chrome "covers" to dress it up, but that is purely for looks and does nothing mechanically to the water pump pulley.

    @JustRide626 It has an aluminum radiator, but the overflow tank and windshield wiper fluid reservoir are made of plastic and sit about the radiator fan and clutch fan

  • @MrZdvy
    @MrZdvy 12 років тому +1

    Yeah, in hindsight a stroker would have been better. But it's a decent rebuild. Still a lot stronger than the 318 that was once there. The stock radiator has been rebuild from 2 to 3 rows, so there is less space between the radiator and the engine. I'm getting tired of the wind noise the fanclutch makes, but the heavy flex fan I used before was even worse. Step on the gas and you hear some sort of hurricane under the hood. Anyway, you're never finished working on these old things. Take care.

  • @TheTexasCoder

    Thanks for the comment, and sorry about the confusion. To remove the clutch fan, you will turn the nut counter-clockwise, and to install the clutch fan you will turn the nut clockwise.

    I have an 07 Dakota and it sounds like a semi when the clutchfan kicks on. I'm a bit hesitant to do this mod because of the wiring and how it would affect the ac operation. Would the same procedure apply for the 07 model year with the 4.7, any info appreciated, thank you.

  • @TheTexasCoder

    @MrZdvy Thanks for the kind words and watching! One of the Mopar club members has a '73 dart, with a 408 stroker build, with an aftermarket large capacity radiator. I remember he did something like a Dodge Viper single fan, which is 4,000+CFM....that thing was a monster! I love the darts, good luck on your project and if you need anything give me a shout!

    @Delphi450r Thanks for watching, and for the comment! The only reason that I replaced the fan clutch was strictly because of the noise. I replaced my fan clutch with a new one from NAPA, and it was still too loud. It made a massive improvement over the sound, the engine is quiet on idle and take offs, and makes for a nice long drive experience. I will make a note to get a video of it running, good idea! The fan is not noisy, I can hear it. My wife and daughter are amazed at the silence :-)

  • @TheTexasCoder
    @TheTexasCoder  13 років тому +1

    @tim4766n Thanks for the comment! If your truck is equipped with A/C, then you should already have an electric fan on your radiator. But yes, the new fan should have a plug that connects to your factory plug. If your truck does not have A/C, then it will not have the electric fan, in which case you will need to wire in your new fan. But the new fan should come with instructions on how to do that. Let me know how it goes, I am glad to meet another Dakota owner!

  • @abram7117
    @abram7117 12 років тому

    Same on Chevys with clutch fans , when acelerating from a stop, truck is sluggish, and when it kicks off after around 20 mph, there is noticeable amount of more pep, sometimes it,will kick on in second gear and you can feel it suck the life out of the motor. Also very noisy as well, fact sometimes ppl will look of when I acelerate, sound like a big rig, other car with an electric fan, does neither of those things.

  • @TheTexasCoder
    @TheTexasCoder  12 років тому +1

    @infiniti05g Thanks for the comment! After running my single fan for a couple of months, I have decided that this coming spring I am going to change it over to a dual 11 inch fan setup from Flex-A-Lite. Most fan configurations will come with a wiring diagram and in some cases the wiring harness should match up completely with your factory plug. I will get video this spring of my new fan install and that should help you. Thanks again for watching!

    @smallenginemaster1 I am not 100% sure if the same 16" fan would work, but I found some great info over at SPAL's site, and I actually emailed a sales person the height/width/depth of my radiator and he gave me a couple of products that would fit. One of them was a dual 11" setup that I am saving up to buy. The dual kit, if I remember correctly, runs about 379.00. Thanks for the comment!

    @evangoldstein1 Thanks for watching, and great question! The best way to go about it is to contact the electric fan manufacturer and speak with them about the amps needed to power the fan(s) and more than likely they will have a relay/thermostat kit for your vehicle. I recommend contacting SPAL or Flex-A-Lite. Keep me posted on your update, and thanks again for watching and for the comment!

  • @TheTexasCoder
    @TheTexasCoder  12 років тому +1

    That is a great question! My buddy has an 07 and he has been thinking about the same thing. I highly recommend buying a Chrysler Factory Service manual (ebay) and researching the wiring schematic and electrical relays involved in your year model. It is possible to do, but you will need to know what amps the factory relay and fuse can handle in order to get the proper electrical fan.

  • @TheTexasCoder

    Excellent steps, the thermostat and rp additive are a great start! The analog guages may be mis-leading, the best and most accurate way to get your coolant temp is through an OBDII scanner capable of reading the PCM info real-time. Try that, but my guess is that your temp should hover on the high side of 200-220 and average about 195-ish on highway driving. You're dead on with needing to know the a/c activation and how the PCM controls fan operation and/or speed. Keep me posted and good luck!

      Mark Abbott The answer is yes... You will always gain power and mpg with an elelctric fan conversion. It doesnt matter what application, you will always see increased performance. Sometimes up to 25hp and 5mpg gains. Yes... 25hp, believe it or not.

    Fan Shrouds not cosmetic. [prob adapt to stock one but that 2 pc would take some talent]
    Your missing prob 40% of cooling fins.
    Shroud and 2 speed fan Much more efficient.
    Don't mean to criticize ,,but electric amps don't magically appear either.

    Beware of auto aftermarket parts made in China, (a la Harbor Freight style). Especially electrical, rubber, (gaskets, o- rings), products and fasteners. Work OK for awhile, price is right, but they do not last.

    @millwrightman99 That's cool, I did not know the Liberty had a clutch fan. The electric fan is there solely for your A/C you should notice that the electric will only kick on when the A/C is engaged. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    I have one of those clutch units in my Jeep Liberty -- but its not noisy at all -- It might have been an option because it has both the electric smaller fan like yours also ..Personally I would rather use the old stile flex blade units if they were available for the Jeep --Very simple and no extra moving parts .or electric draw .
    Different strokes for different folks .

    Those trucks left the factory with dual fans one electric one clutch fan you just wasted your money buying another electric fan you should have left the other one on there I've been driving my truck for 20 years like that only time I put the clutch fan back on is when I'm pulling a trailer in the summertime

    As preventative measures Ive replaced the coolant with a royal purple additive, truck has 47K miles, run an 180 stainless-steel thermostat, and all my cooling plumbing is in good shape...But I always seem to creep just above halfway on my temp gauge on a hot day. The biggest difference I see is in front of my radiator I dont have a condenser like in yours. I need to understand how the a/c is activated in relationship to the clurchfan coming on. Thanks for reply.

However im not going to do it until next week but did you notice less of a load on the engine or increase on mpg. Also that 50 amp fuse is way to big you should put a 20 or maybe even 25 a fuse it to protect the circuit and wires not give more power, just saying.

    how does it do when towing?

    • @alfierose
      @alfierose 6 років тому

      The fan knows when you are towing! Much stress is added to the engine/transmission if you're pulling/towing a fairly large load (boat, camper, trailer of bricks, etc.). You're gonna need a lot more horsepower to do that. The engine knows that less horsepower is used if you're just going to town to get groceries with nothing being towed. Towing nothing, your temp should be normal and no extra stress is really involved. As your pulling/towing this heavy load, the transmission and engine both say, "Hey man, i'm stressed!" Your engine is now pissed off because it's getting hotter than earlier when you went to town for groceries with no tow involved. If you're towing something, your engine, water pump, thermostat, tranny all know. "Hey driver, I'm pulling something heavy, i need [extra] help!" The other [electric] fan located in the front of the vehicle is already busy with cooling radiator down and performing A/C and condenser responsibilities. One fan located in the front of the vehicle will NOT assist you in overheat protection if you are towing. It will also know you're towing something because if you didn't have the fan clutch installed AND running, you'll most likely end up on the side of the road overheating, puking up coolant, or even worse, a broken/blown head gasket! Bottom line, don't remove the fan clutch, it has a very important job to do!
