Never thought any reactor would find this buried treasure. John Stewart btw was a replacement member on the Kingston Trio, a mid 20th century folk band. I had a billion of their records.
Ditto that!!!
I was thinking the exact same thing. Love this song.
I told you a million times to stop exaggerating
The best song very few people have heard of. Glad you found it.
It's well known to me but then again I'm old enough to remember hearing it on the radio.
Never heard it but❤it
John Stewart also wrote one of The Monkees' biggest hits, "Daydream Believer".
My John Stewart story. I was a satellite dish installer back in the late 1990's. One day i got a work order for John Stewart. I showed up at his house in Novato, Ca. He met me at the door. By this time in his career he was mostly retired. His wife of many years was going thru cancer at the time. They were both gracious people. After I realized who I was in the presence of, I noticed a series of Gold records on the walls of the stairway as we walked upstairs. One of the Gold records was for "Daydream Believer' which he wrote. I mentioned I grew up watching "The Monkees" and heard Daydream Believer many times. John sort of chuckled and said, "That song has bought me a few houses". I spent the afternoon installing his Satellite system. It was and still is a fond memory.
Back in the 70s and part of the 80s, everybody was singing with everybody. Stevie Nicks was no exception. She sang duets and back-up vocals on many songs
This is not just Stevie Nicks doing backup, it's also fellow band member Lindsey Buckingham on guitar, as well as contributions from Mike Botts, the drummer from Bread.
Pretty sure that's Christine McVie on the keyboards.
lindsey learned his style from stewart. it is stewart playing the guitar licks in the song.
You must be deaf. Stevie, Christine, and Lindsay did backup for this album.
John Stewart was a member of the Kingston Trio, wrote "Daydream Believer" for the Monkees, was a master guitarist and teacher whose students included Frank Zappa and Lindsay Buckingham who also appears on this song.
OMG!!! Finally someone reacted to this gem!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Can you believe it. Someone finally got around to it.
I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THIS SONG!!
Stevie's grandfather taught her when she was quite young how to sing harmony and she can sing harmony with pretty much anyone.
Stevie's grandfather was a never really made it Country singer, he did play bars, events stuff like that but never recorded that I know of.
Wow, someone discovered this incredible song which is absolutely bad ass, some dirty guitar on this! I still have this on a 45. I'm 55 and heard this when it was released. Underrated classic!
One of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. "California Bloodlines", "July, You're a Woman", "Friend of Jesus", "Armstrong", "Daydream Believer" for the Monkees and many many more.
I'd been waiting for someone to react to this. Thank you for doing so. With that beat and those vocals, you just can't sit still or not sing along. Another song that gets stuck in your head. Again, thank you.
Shawn and Mel...i LOVE your reactions!!! 💞
Wait. What? Omg. Lost classic. Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️
I love this song . I didn't expect anyone to play this great song . THANK YOU
This is such a great old song, I remember being a little girl singing this song! Love it!
So glad you did this song! I just heard it again last week and wondered if you reacted to it yet, no time better then now!
Amazing song. Love to watch your first impressions of some amazing music. I loved this song in high school.
One of my favorite songs of all time. This is indeed a buried treasure
"Gold" became a top-five hit in the United States, Canada and Australia. It made lesser showings in the UK and New Zealand.
Chart (1979) Peak position
Australia (Kent Music Report ) 5
Canada RPM Top Singles 4
New Zealand (Recorded Music NZ) 13
UK Singles (OCC) 43
US Billboard Hot 100 5
US Adult Contemporary (Billboard) 42
US Cash Box Top 100 6
Year-end chart 1979 Rank
Australia 38
Canada 24
US Billboard Hot 100 51
US Cash Box 35
This was another gem missed by us here in uk along with doobies what a fool believes, strangely enough i was aware of both. If a song did not make tv on top of the pops it quite frequently did not have impact.
I remember this one from back in the day. The 70s were thick with good music.
You guys seem to enjoy Stevie’s vocals. if you have not already reacted to Kenny Loggins “Whenever I Call You Friend”, I highly recommend you check it out for an even better “featuring” Stevie Nicks song where she has an even more prominent vocal contribution to the song.
Love love love !!! Thank you to the person requesting this. And Lindsey on guitar ! edit This is a lip sync video of the original track, so they're not on stage (darnit)
You can tell when you know it.
I was out in LA about five years ago driving back from Malibu on an incredibly winding road to the Valley with a huge moon and this song came on the radio. Just one of those moments you never forget where a song is almost like a movie soundtrack.
Still have my album after all these years, Bombs away dream babies, and cherish it.
Stevie Nicks did duets with
John Stewart - Gold
Tom Petty - Stop Dragging My Heart
Don Henley of the Eagles - Leather and Lace
Kenny Loggins - Whenever I Call You Friend
Sheryl Crow - Sorcerer
Dave Stewart - Cheaper Than Free
Marron 5 - Remedy
Walter Egan - Magnet & Steel
Awesome memories! Love this video and of Stevie Nicks backup voice! ❤❤
If I remember correctly, this was recorded at the same recording session as the Fleetwood Mac song "Sisters of the Moon" (off "Tusk"). The guitar settings (guitar by FM's Lindsay Buckingham) and overall vibe of the song are identical.
This came out about 3 years before Tusk
@@TonyM1961 Gold was released in May 1979; Tusk was released five months later.
@@jamesdignanmusic2765 ok, my memory is way off. I knew I have been having some problems but didn't think that I was that far off
Great song choice.... Very few reactions to this hidden gem...
To us oldsters who first heard this back in grammar or high school it will definitely bring back memories.
Terrific find. John Stewart is huge rabbit hole to go down. I had the privilege of working with John on a couple of projects in the 90s (plus he remains my favorite singer song writer). He was an amazing songwriter (including Runaway Train, a number one hit for Roseanne Cash and Daydream Believer, a number one hit for the Monkees).
stewart was also famously the writer of the monkees' hit 'daydream believer'.
Hi Shawn and Mel, I love this song! I probably haven't heard it 25 years. I agree with Vincent its a "buried treasure". Its got such a great vibe. If I close my eyes I can remember this playing on the radio and singing it with my friends in the car as we drove past the bright lights of Los Angeles. It's great how a song can transport us to another place in time!
The Song peaked at # 5 in 1979
I love that you appreciate the Goddess the one the only Stevie Nicks
Damn! Haven't thought of this song in years!!! Great song!
You have to hear Dolly Partons "Me and Little Andy" have tissues handy.
Wow! Completely forgot about this song but I'm happy to hear it again!
Great song! Happy to hear it, tyvm.
"California girls are the greatest in the world, each one a song in the making!"
Per Wikipedia John Stewart wrote the song some time after he left the folk group Kingston Trio. The song is from the album Bombs Away Dream Babies, in which Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham contributed. The song has a smooth funk/pop rhythm.
The song takes a light-hearted but cynical view of the recording industry in Los Angeles; in time, Stewart would feel the same way about the song itself. He would eventually stop performing "Gold" in concert, calling it "vapid" and "empty" and meaning nothing to him, having done it for the money and to please his record company.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Whenever I hear this I also think Of Nicolette Larson and Little River Band. Not sure if my memory has them in the correct year or not LOL!!!! Thanks for dusting off this gem!!
I've heard this song before but never realized Stevie sang on it! Thank you for another great song! I am new to your channel and subscribed based on Shawn's reaction to Silver Springs. He *got* it. And I'd love to know how he felt when he learned Stevie wrote it about Lyndsay. Can I recommend "If You Ever Did Believe" from the Practical Magic soundtrack. It's my favourite Stevie song.
Love ❤️
Wow I had forgotten about this one it brings bach great memories
I only got to see Stevie on stage once...it was 1978 at Cal Jam 2 when she got on the stage with Bob Welch. :(
You guys are great!!! Great song, great reaction....
Love it!
🙏☺️🎶✌️🌸
Love it. Thanks
Turning music into gold = gold records by selling 500,000

Multi Platinum - over 2,000,000
Diamond - 10,000,000
Great summertime driving song!
Its from the 1975-1979 period where anything Fleetwood Mac, or its members did outside of the group was 🔥
There was another song on this album called Midnight wind that was very good and Stevie backed him up on it too.
Wow I never knew that Stevie Nicks was singing in this!! Of course I can hear her beautiful voice but not when it come out!!!!
Stevie nicks and Lindsay Buckingham are on the recording, not on stage. Always loved this tune.
I know more about the music industry in the last 50 years than 95% of folks. I have this song in my favs list. I fell in love with Stevie the first time I heard her. I’m shocked and basically a dipshit for never realizing that was Stevie til now….I’m a failure of epic proportions
Gold, the breakup song, drivers seat. Similar melodies. They change ur vibration
I've often wondered how he managed to throw in his guitar AFTER he jumped in it.
If I had a choice between gold and music I'd pick music! Great song great reaction!
💖💖💖💖💖
Love this song!
Listen to Stevie Nicks Beauty and the Beast
If you like this you should check out ‘Midnight Wind’ by John Stewart ft. Stevie Nicks
my husband got me hooked on your videos ...GREAT !!!!!! I'd like to see you review the song by Bob Dylen 's Hurricane song ...😊
Hi from Australia
Don't forget us Aussies! Here are two songs from one of our favourite R&B/Soul singers Renee Geyer:
1. "Heading in the Right Direction" and "It's a Man's World" Please check her out. Love your site.
This dude wrote "Daydream Believer" performed by The Monkees! If you like this one, check out Midnight Wind. It's a sexier song.
Hey brother n sister
Cool song
More magic from Laurel Canyon
Y'all need to react to a group call One way and their song call Lady you are
My mom suggested Fats domino I found my thrill on bluberry hill
Stevie Nicks. Christine McVie. Lindsey Buckingham. This is John Stewart basically fronting Fleetwood Mac. All three of them are there. Obviously.
Apparently non of Fleetwood Mac are in the music video.
Next try Frankie and the knockouts singing “Sweetheart”. It’s awesome.
The video is being over dubbed by the studio recording. That is why Stevie isn't on stage.
Is it just me or does John Stewart sound a bit like Merle Haggard?
Stevie’s vocals and Lyndsey Buckingham’s guitar!
This video is misleading.
This is a lip sync performance by John Stewart, that’s why you hear but don’t see Stevie.
LOL! Different strokes for different folks...One of the worst songs ever... Sorry my opinion!
