    Lyrics
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beat time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Well my buddy Jim Bass past he's a-workin' pumpin' gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to his soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Ah the California girls are the greatest in the world
Each one a song in the making
Singin' right to me I can hear the melody
Story is there for the takin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold (ooh)
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beat in time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Flyin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold (ooh, yeah)
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold (yes they)
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
    Rockin' on the radio
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
    slippin' down the back road
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold (yes they do)
People out there turnin' music into gold, into gold
I think that this was the song where I fell properly in love with stevie nick's voice... i love that she's aged so well. We lose a lot of incredible musicians over the years (RIP christine), but it warms my heart to see stevie still going strong....

Amazing song by an amazing artist. Worked with John on a couple of projects in the mid 90s and opened for him on two occasions. This guy was one of the main artists responsible for the Americana sound. You could go down a big rabbit hole with this guy. (and he wrote Day Dream Believer for the Monkees)

I can't tell you how big this song was in Australia. I was only 8 or 9 years old, but I remember it being on the radio constantly. Even my parents had bought the vinyl single so we could play it at home. I think, for the time, the only songs that may have been bigger were The Knack with My Sharona (that was MASSIVE), and the Split Enz songs of the times (One Step Ahead and History Never Repeats). This song was a true international hit. These reaction channels (when authentic like the WHz) are a great way to remind people of fantastic music that has been otherwise kind of forgotten...

And this song did turn to Gold. I believe it went number 1 in the charts in Australia that year. This song, night time in the summer of 1979 is a period of time I can’t even explain. It was that unique.

John played all the guitar parts. Lyndsey was supposed to play on it. But ended up because of other commitments not able do it so John had to.

does anyone ever know how Stevie Nicks ended up on this record ? Did she know him? were they old friends? Why doesnt she appear in the video? and why does he fake playing the Lindsay Buckingham guitar solo?

    • @dandobrowolski5818

I believe Mr Stewart had a crush on Stevie Nicks at the time...he had been in the industry orbit of Fleetwood Mac. As for why she doesn't appear in the video....I'm guessing she was on tour with Fleetwood Mac when he was ready to shoot the video. It may have also been a contract situation...or money....who knows, she has never said anything publicly about it in any detail.

He and Lyndsey were friends that’s how she ended up singing on this and on Midnight Wind from the same album

That’s Lindsey Buckingham on there as well (thus the Fleetwood Mac sound and signature guitar sound. Plus his harmonies with Stevie).

I hate to correct you but I was a friend of John’s from when I was 17 in 1973 until he died in 2008. Lyndsey was supposed to play on this but then he had a commitment he had to tend to so John played all the guitar parts.

@@markstanley565 Oh really? Ha ha must be a Mandela effect - I thought he had done the guitar. Thanks for the info. I do love Spinning of the World.

@@jeanio2010 I love that song too. Lyndsey was a huge Kingston Trio fan. He and I were sitting back stage the first time I heard Gold. I told John, “that’s a hit!” I had him write out the lyrics with the chords right then and there so I could add it to my shows. So I was performing it 6 months before it was released. I still have the paper he wrote it out on.
Also, Jim Bass is a real guy who worked at a gas station where John would get his gas at. Jim Bass asked John to put him in one of his songs. He got his wish.

Check out on UA-cam my version of John’s song “Shadows of the Angels Wings.” I’m playing the guitar in an unorthodox way because I contracted bacterial meningitis and had to have the ends of all my fingers amputated. So I taught myself how to play a little bit by using the knuckle of one finger and my thumb

The cocaine was working overtime on Stevie for this one. It was all she could do to get the words out.
Another great song from this album is Midnight Wind. Check it out
