As a person who does all 3 peaks of olomana weekly I think a lot of us could take these suggestions more seriously if they were consistent and made sense. Pu’u manamana I understand, sacred places are worth limiting or restricting access to. But when you want to say it’s about safety when you close stairway but hikes like olomana exist, it just doesn’t add up. I’ve done the stairs, they’re NOTHING compared to Olomana. So what’s the truth then? Is it just easier for the rescuers to collect the bodies off olomana or what? And why do I feel like the answer to this would just be to spitefully make olomana illegal before you ever give up that losing fight and make the stairs legal again.

Haiku stair is closed due to safety reason? i don't think so, since getting to Haiku stair thru Moanalua Valley Trail is much more dangerous.

If friends told you to jump in a fire, would you do it?!....EVEN when you know it was dangerous?!

This place is the most beautiful thing you can see in Hawaii but he is right it's super dangerous. Almost 90 degree angles on all sides once you get to the swimming hole/waterfall. Don't do it because if something happens your putting others in danger.

Can anyone tell me if Ka’au crater hike is off limits? It’s otherwise known as 3 waterfall hike. I’ve done it myself several times but I don’t see many signs on it.

The solution is simple, but maybe not totally enforceable. If hikers go into restricted areas and require rescue, they get charged for the rescue..cash or credit?

After 14 years here I never tried to go to sacred falls out of respect for the people who died there. Now that I know there is heiau at crouching lion I won’t go there either. Maybe if the State put an informative sign about the Heiau and respecting the culture of Hawaii it would work better than just a sign saying trail closed. Most of the hikers doing these are in their 20s and think a danger sign doesn’t apply to them.

It's the most beautiful place I've been to but what happened to everyone like Jennifer Johnson is just sad beyond words. God bless her and everyone affected by this horrible tragedy. I went the last time right before this tragedy and would NEVER GO BACK.

You may hike into a heiau along a number of sanctioned hikes throughout Hawaii. The real reason for banning this trail was people were tired of all the tourists going there and that death was all the justification that the state needed to close it off to the public - Crouching Lion

I actually appreciate this video, at least it offers clarity on these rules. Unfortunately I’m the minority of my age group with this opinion.

The leading cause of death to visitors in Hawaii is drowning. Is the state going to close the ocean next? Way more people die of traffic accidents in Hawaii. Is the state going to close down all the roads next...
Let people be in nature at their own risk... If they get in trouble just don't rescue them...

The whole state is culturally sensitive, sacred space, and should be protected by the people native to that place. Good video, but the native families who been here for generations should have access regardless the situation. If you know the protocols , the land knows you. There you are safe.

why not introduce a lottery mechanism (like Yosemite's half dome), and use these funds to make the hike trails safer?

Well just spin me up in bubble wrap, toss several masks on me, and roll me to next luau. All non-paved hikes should be illegal. If a stroller can’t make the trip then nobody should. That way I’m protected from all the slippery rocks, and sacred rocks, and meth rocks. I know you’ll be careful not to restrict access to my wallet though.
