I was actually able to revive a dead pump by tearing it down and cleaning all the debris out. There was about 2/3rds as much debris inside the pump as caught on the screen. Going forward I will be disassembling the pump every time I do a haldex service. The internals are pretty simple, not many components and it only takes an extra 10 minutes. Just have to remove that last torx bolt on the face that the screen sits on. Be careful because there are some springs inside.
Nice and clear video on Haldex Maintenance Charles! The Pump basic settings is not to prime the pump but to calibrate the pump. Without correct calibration the generated pressure scheme is not correct and you will have wrong pressures. Always do the calibration when cleaning or replacing the pump.
Hello. So even if I don’t change the pump, still need to calibrate it after the oil change? I would do this myself but don’t have VCDS so probably gonna have to take it to the dealer.
By VW service manual its recommended and not mandatory. Car calibrates everytime you drive and will give error if not possible then you go to calibrate
It's been 3 years since I last changed my fluid so I'm here for a refresher. Thanks! My manual on my 2015 A3 says 32 Nm on the drain and that both fill and drain plugs should be replaced. Pretty scary the dealer has no seals! Reminds me of Ford, when I went to the dealer for the then exotic transmission fluid for a scheduled change, the lady at the counter said they have none, have never ordered it nor had it in stock.
Glad you covered the pump motor reset in VCDS! That was the magic sauce for my S3 Haldex service. Turns out my pump hadn't been primed after the previous Haldex service (before I bought the car) so I was running 2WD for a few years without realizing it.
My understanding (maybe wrong) is that this is not a required step -- you can just run the car for 30 seconds, then top it off. If you have a lot of debris clogging the screen, or the pump is replaced, it is good for the pump to be reset to the optimal pump current (would have been higher with blocked screen). Or maybe I don't really know.
@@attocoulomb That could be the way its supposed to work, but mine went for a long, long time without the pump working. I bought the car with 37k miles, so the Haldex service was done just prior to my obtaining it. I didn't realize my AWD was not functioning until I got stuck on an icy driveway about 2 years later! When I did the next Haldex service at 65k miles the screen and fluid were both very clean.
Great video Charles! The Haldex is one of the most neglected components in an AWD car, right up there with the differential and brake fluid. I had the Haldex go bad in my Ford Five Hundred. Yes, you read that right - a Ford! Ford had partnered with Volvo in the late 90s, and the Ford Five Hundred/Freestyle both used the Swedish Haldex as the AWD coupler. I believe Ford still uses the Haldex all through Taurus and Explorer production too. FYI - The reason the AWD failed on my car is the screen was completely blocked with particles from the wet clutch. When this happens the pump will eventually overload and short out, taking the differential control module with it. That's what happened to me. Luckily there were enough of these Fords in the wreckers that I got a replacement DCM, but I did buy a new pump. Ford says this is a 'sealed for life' system, which is a total crock of crap. It should absolutely be a service performed every 30K or 3 years, which ever comes first. BTW - The Haldex service on that VW was a breeze compared to my Ford. On my car you have to REMOVE the driveshaft to pull out the pump, as the CV joint flange on the drive shaft blocks the pump, and there's no room to temporarily move the drive shaft up out of the way. Also, there's no drain plug! You're supposed to vacuum suck the fluid out the fill hole. I scoured the Ford forums, and although it was not recommended, many people drilled and tapped the case for drainage. That's what I did - no regrets! As for the AWD fluid, Ford didn't have it in stock at my local dealer, so I went to the Volvo dealer instead. The Volvo fluid was half the price Ford wanted FOR. THE. SAME. DANG. FLUID. GRRR!!! Regardless, the AWD 'wrench' light turned off after the service, and the AWD has been flawless since. So learn from me: Maintain your Haldex! Thanks for the video Charles - cheers from Frosty Canada!
I have the Volvo equivalent system as you’re Ford - and I’m getting ready to go through all the same crap. My DEM (same thing as your DCM) is dead, and unfortunately unlike your Ford my S60R uses the Bosch ME7 system for the entire car. Which means that each module is linked to every other module and you HAVE to have the dealer program new modules to your car. I am a little jealous of that lol.

Hey Charles. I've done the haldex service last week following this video. Thanks for documenting this as you did, made it pretty easy to follow along. Prior to the service, I had a pretty weird sound coming from the back when making full lock turns at low speeds (manoeuvring). My local VW dealer said a haleex service is the first thing they'd do to try and solve this. Right after servicing, the issue appeared to have been solved. But yesterday I found myself on a wet patch of grass and the car making the same sound as it struggled to get out of there. I was able to prime the pump using OBDeleven but it made a pretty weird and loud sound when doing so. I didn't get any errors, so I assumed everything went okay. But now I'm doubting again. Do you happen to have an idea of what's causing this? My best guess is that the pump needs replacing. Thanks again!
Hi Charles, quick question for you-how the heck do you get the pump cable clip to release?? I just spent 2 hours under my 2016 Skoda Yeti-it was on a 4 post lift-and just couldn’t get the cable to separate, and neither could any of my buddies in the workshop either. The car has done 75,000 miles so I thought it would be a bit stiff-but no way could we get it to release…….I know it has a catch on the connection but couldn’t get that to move either. In the end I just refilled the oil and checked that the pump was running and will try again in the new year.
greetings, I did everything as you said, but I have some knocking in the haldex when I wind the wheels, is it possible that there is air left and how to get it out
@@HumbleMechanic But, time, process and equipment what need for simple oil change in diff...I can't imagine at home to do that, you need twice more time...Where car industry goes...
Hello, very nice amd clean job! Now, please a question. On a Audi Q3 40tfsi I have a noise when accelerating hard and full steering, I did oil change in Haldex and in the differential. Noise still there. Rep says no problem, no contamination, noise normal 😢 But I am sure it is not and that they didn't service the haldex pump. Now where can that noise come from? Haldex, diff or shaft? Thank you! PS: my2019, 50,000 km
Dumb question. When you were doing this service working at a dealership, did you pull the pump, or is that something you do for yourself (and did when you could sneak it in faster than book time)?
As someone who just came back from the dealership and was told my vehicle needed a HALDEX service this video is remarkably helpful. I am curious though how long would a service like this take? I was charged for an hour and 160 for parts. does that sound about right?
Charles, when should one do an oil flush? My car is 2.0TFSI CHHC Audi TT 2016, 56k miles and did all long drains (every 2 years or 18k miles). What do you think about engine flushers/shampoos like CASTROL ENGINE SHAMPOO?

Can or Do you have a video of a Bevel box service?
greetings, I did everything as you said, but I have some knocking in the haldex when I wind the wheels, is it possible that there is air left and how to get it out
Holy shit what a job for diff oil change...Old cars are the best!
It’s really not bad to do. Getting the car on the lift is the toughest lol
Thank you for the video amazing VW master
Dumb question. When you were doing this service working at a dealership, did you pull the pump, or is that something you do for yourself (and did when you could sneak it in faster than book time)?
Only pulled pumps when there was a concern
Other people have mentioned resetting the pump re-learn system on the computer?
Is it possible to do the haldex service without vcds or obd11
Nice.
You mentioned the pump won`t start if not started from the menu when taken out a second time? or did i misunderstand
Nicely done!
Good job Charles:):)
nice video! I want to replace my TT haldex oil soon, the rear wheels off the ground is a real must have?
Charles, is this procedure same as RS3?
Looks like what wass added again, all dripped 😁
whats the name of the oil that u put inside haldex system ?
It’s amazing how many dealers don’t offer drivetrain or transmission service for audi. They don’t plan on you keeping these things past 100k
It’s a tough sell since it’s not on mmm in the owners book
Interesting, have done a lot of research on this most say you need to do a haldex relearn with vcds or equivalent, to adjust the voltage settings?
Need? No. It is however good practice
Great video and very informative.
But seen other videos were drain, clean pump, fill then start car and fill again. Is it enough ? Tx
Sooooo, where can I get a Humble Mechanic hat? I need one, lol
As someone who just came back from the dealership and was told my vehicle needed a HALDEX service this video is remarkably helpful. I am curious though how long would a service like this take? I was charged for an hour and 160 for parts. does that sound about right?
My local VW dealership (Long Beach CA) did it for 160 for parts and labor all together.
Can you use a laser thermometer to check the temperatures?
Charles, when should one do an oil flush?
My car is 2.0TFSI CHHC Audi TT 2016, 56k miles and did all long drains (every 2 years or 18k miles).
What do you think about engine flushers/shampoos like CASTROL ENGINE SHAMPOO?
Good guide!
Differential service too !
