This watch essentially takes the existing Suunto Vertical endurance-sports focused watch that was released this past spring, and gives it an AMOLED display. Alongside that, it gets an updated user interface and a number of new software features (which will also be ported back to a number of other existing Suunto watches). Oh - and for arguably the first time in recent memory, Suunto has absolutely slaughtered the competition on price here. The base unit is priced at just $449, including a sapphire crystal display and stainless steel case.
So, here’s what’s on the Suunto Race:
New 1.43” AMOLED touch screen, 466x466px at 1,000 nits
GPS battery life time starting at 40hrs in multiband/dual-frequency (and up to 120 hours in ‘Tour’ mode).
Standby/smartwatch battery life of 12 days in gesture-based display mode, or 7 days in always-on display mode
Adds digital crown
Adds new nightly HRV tracking, as well as HRV trending features
Adds Suunto Coach integration with aforementioned HRV tracking (will give guidance inclusive of HRV changes)
Adds workout planner to the watch itself (plus mobile app and TrainingPeaks)
Adds Training widget/watch face with TSB/CTLHRV
Adds new daily companion, new daily widgets, new mini widgets
Adds sleep stages shown on-watch
Adds ability to do multiple alarms (e.g. wake-up alarms)
Adds ‘Find my Phone’ functionality
Adds ‘Stand-up’ reminder
Adds ‘Progress’ running race estimates & HR run threshold
Adds new sport mode…umm…Rope Skipping
Adds customization of the widgets
Adds do-not-disturb mode
Improved music control touch controls (for controlling phone music
First Suunto watch using fully in-house algorithms, transitioned away from FirstBeat algorithms
Retains existing snorkeling depth gauge features, with existing 100m
22mm industry standard strap (silicon strap included in the box)
Retains/has military durability specifications
Two model options: Titanium ($449/EUR) or Stainless steel ($549/EUR)
Sapphire crystal display on both models
Weight comes in at a claimed 69g for titanium, and 84g for stainless steel

I think I’m going to switch to this from my garmin soon. The value seems unreal
I might actually consider this instead of getting a Forerunner 265/965. Very exciting!
I'm currently using a Suunto 9 Peak but considering updating to the Race S or maybe even changing over to a Garmin Forerunner 265. I'm still somewhat new to the running watch game and have found your videos to be super helpful. Thanks for taking the time to make these honest reviews & deep dives, dude!
My first ABC watch was Suunto’s Vector: simple, reliable, made by Suunto in Finland. I’m pausing for a moment of nostalgia.
Suunto the OG of adventure watches is finally back! Good stuff
Finally! A worthy competitor from Suunto at a great price! Loooong time coming.
I am a long time Suunto user. Current;y Peak 9 Pro. Great for training. Was going to go Vertical for battery - ultra runs up to 40 hours. I have had my watch burn out even on reduced mode more than once which is frustrating. But the Race looks great and should be fine. Your reviews have been incredibly helpful - as they always are. So grateful you do what you do. 😊👍🙏
MY FRIEND HOW DO YOU ADD MUSIC ON THE 9 PEAK PRO ?? CAN YOU HELP ME ?
@@thiegoac sorry but I do music straight from my iPhone with Jabra Sport earphones. And I have switched to the Race and it is every bit as good as I hoped it would be.
This is crazy man. Forever & a day ago I loved the Suunto 7 for look/design/feel/screen, but it was a piece of sh*t for battery life and heart rate accuracy - this (bc connects to chest strap) fixes all that and adds all the latest expected features, and honestly might bump the ever-present Garmin from my wrist! Absolutely insane. Can't wait to get my hands on one.
I am thinking the same, the sleep tracking in my Fenix 7 is too much every night I have a poor sleep, the new polar vantage 3 is like a Coros apex 2 pro.
When will you have a review ready?
@@Ordinary-Hendrik yes! And wellllll - the new V3 is much better than the apex 2 pro for wellness, recovery and sleep, and now screen!
@@DailyNickLife and.... who have a review ready?! I am small-time so working on getting one (desperately) at the moment. But either way I'll def be doing a review as soon as possible - this is a super incredible watch by the specs and I'm half interested in seeing if it will bump my F7Pro off my wrist as a daily driver
@@fitgearhunter Thanks and appreciate! Wait for your review! 🙏🙏🙏
DC, you are being featured on "The Verge." That's HUGE, brother! Watch your subscription skyrock. Well deserved.
Yup, I began using Polar HR-watches 1996, then Suunto 2004 and Garmin 2020. I have been happy with all of these top HRv watches as technology has evolved. Suunto’s very competitive price tempts me to get one as a pair for my Fenix 6X Pro 🤗
Same re:Polar, but I am now looking elsewhere given the price of the Polar Grit X2 Pro.... Garmin Epix 2 for example, are on sale for incredibly good prices from what I can tell, that might be my best VFM.
Suunto are coming back from the oblivion. Great. I’ve almost thought they won’t ever make it back. Their Ambit series was great but since their products were just worse than the ones from either Garmin or Polar at the same price point. Now this one is realty good.
Suunto is back in the game 🔥🔥🔥
Really love what Suunto is doing. $450 for that watch seems like a smoking deal. Not really sure why anyone would spring for the extra $100 for the titanium since all you’re getting is a marginally lighter case.
At this price it is very intriguing. Sapphire and AMOLED for $600 here in Canada. Unheard of!
It's amazing to see Suunto back in the game I was really inticed by the vertical but matrix displays just feel so dated in 2023
Yet many people still prefer them over omoled because they feel less like having a phone on your wrist.
@@SeanonyoutubeHi 🙋
@@SeanonyoutubeYes. Personally I do not see any reason for amoled on a sportswatch. Sure it is pretrier to look at, but one does not stare warch screen that much and I take the 2-3x battery life with always-on display any day.
There’s a certain, old-tech charm to an MIP screen that makes it more appropriate than the ubiquitous AMOLED on a wristtop display - somewhat analogous to a good old graphing calculator.
I agree however is important to know why those screen are still useful
Kudos for suunto for roadmap and update older watches. Polar learn from competitors!
Personally I would never leave Garmin but I have to admit that Sunton is doing things well
watch I was waiting for, great job Suunto
Tested in store. Smooth UI. Comfortable on wrist. The crown works great. Walked away with Ti edition.
Anyone using a Garmin at this point must be sponsored. The build quality of the Suunto is unmatched. The lag is not going to hurt your little workout.
Really intrested in the reviews of Suunto Race, especially in comparison to F265 cuz they got such similar Pricepoint.
Been waiting for long for a top watch from Suunto
Disappointed it isn't made in Finland but seems like a necessary measure to price it competitively. Looks awesome
freedive/shallow dive mode is a winner for me. To get this on a garmin watch you need to pay at least 900USD
have only just got the vertical solar, I'm hoping time will show why the vertical is better, this looks great
I allso just bought vertical and after couple days this beauty come out.i sent back vertical and waiting for new banger
Great overview there Ray. It would be so cool if within Suunto's store there is an alternative to Garmin's own Virtual Racer. Also I think map labels are sorely needed on that magnificent display.
wow, this looks great, can't wait for the in-depth review
Waiting like hell for a full review and a comparison with Polar Vantage V3, hopefully it won't take long.
Polar delayed the watch today, thus, review also delayed till things are final.
Thank you. I would like to see a side by side with the Garmin Forerunner 965 as size and price are more similar than the Epix.
As the number of views on this video just surpassed that of the Polar, this is sure to be a strategic victory for Suunto not only price-wise, but also in the timing.
Awesome video Ray! Looks like a heavy hitter from Suunto, nice to see the scroll wheel too for extra usability 🌟
I'm glad that the 9peak pro is also getting the update. the watch has come a long way with the updates and got alot better and cheaper
Can you load maps also?
When will the review come? I am very interested in the HRV implementation. I’ll wait to purchase one after I’ve seen your review 👍
Funny how Suunto and Polar basically released their newest watch at the same time. Suunto Race and Polar V3
but which one is better
suunto has sapphire glass, it is cheaper and in my opinion looks better. It's just a pity that you can't play music on any of them without a phone
@@riku4783I'm a big Polar fan (V2 owner), but am giving Suunto the win here. (For now)
I would suggest that people be advised that Suunto is taking orders for the Race titanium and collecting payment and is not shipping watches yet and is not saying what the holdup is. Zero communication from Suunto. Not a good situation. Also, they won’t let you cancel your order even though it hasn’t shipped and they won’t tell you when it will ship. And good luck getting through to customer service.
Nice video.
I just read your article about the hiking tour you did with the suunto race, forerunner 965 and vantage v3.
How can it be that the suunto race is using so less battery compared to the other devices? Does it record less data or so because the difference is huge. All of those watches were used with always on display right?
Hope you can help me because I didn’t know how to reach you that’s why I‘m writing here. Thx Matthias 🙂
That looks like a solid watch and with the sapphire lens I am impressed. I currently use the Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar and I do love the very extended battery life on the non-amoled display, and the high number of data fields available directly on the main screen, but if I were to buy a new watch today I would definitely be looking at this new Suunto if nothing else because of the sapphire glass. I have tried paying several hundred dollars for a watch with gorilla glass 3 previously and will never ever do that again.
It might just be me, but the loading of the maps when moving around the maps seems much faster than Garmin watches and polar watches.
In my opinion by far the biggest news (neglected by most reviewers) are:
1. Suddenly no claims regarding sustainability.
2. It's not made in Finland.
As a conclusion: If the wealthy people don't pay the full price of these products, the poor & the environment do.
Please touch this in the final review Ray!
1) The sustainability claims for the Vertical apply here as well.
2) Suunto transitioned to making watches in China many years ago.
1) Do you mean the carbon neutrality? How about workers' rights and conditions?
2) But Vertical, 9 Peak Pro, 9 Peak, 9, 5 (newer) and 3 (newer) are all made in Finland. @@Dcrainmaker
@@StrangeLoLSamkovic🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 go buy some glue
Who cares about sustainability or the workers?!
Clever people do. They also know that there's no sustainability without respect for workers' rights. @@ricardomontalbanjr1943
I hope Suunto updates the Peak Pro lineup and borrow these new features from the Race. Really love the Peak Pro design
I'm very excited to see the follow up, big question is how accurate is the open water swim data?! Has SUUNTO finally fixed it 🤞
Race or vertical ?
I hope this amoled screen won't sucks as suunto's 7...
Was really looking into upgrading to a Vertical from my old 9 Baro... now I am wondering if I won't save some $ and go for a Race instead :o
Looks great last time I has a suunto was the ambit 2s. They finally are using their game again. Have a garmin Felix 5 pro so no need to get a new one but seems enticing if I was
Super, i was just want to buy garmin epix 2 but it doesnt have sapphire and i love Suunto design. And its cheaper than Garmin.
Wow I like it. Waiting for full review
looks really tempting, as a happy Garmin user, I am really curious what Garmin's answer will be. (Enduro 3 sticking to MIPS would be great).
How does this compare to the Garmin Ultra 2? I'm coming from the Garmin Forerunner series. I figured the Ultra 2 would be the do all end all watch for the long term.
DC is he kinda guy who hits every coffee shop in Hawaii before doing a watch review.
Great as always Ray. Can you tell me if the listed weight is for the case only or includes the strap
Looks like a great watch! I wish it was made in Finland like their other watches. I’m getting tired of everything being made in China.
YEES! Finally, Suunto!
There's one feature that's kind of worth a 150 dollars for me; DRILL LOG. I don't know but it's such a useful feature Garmin watches have..
A Suunto T6 was my first "sports watch" back in 2006 or so. I've been Garmin since 2010 or so, but might consider this. I'd like to update my Fenix 6 to something with a nicer screen, at least
I've just got a Garmin 965, otherwise, I would probably be doing the same.
Any chance of a new review of the Vertical with the software update once its out?
Suunto is BACK!
DC Rainmaker, the only sportsman/UA-camr/Techguy being able to shoot all over the planet, ubiquity... !! 😅
Amazing video thanks a lot, i struggled to keep up haha i had to slow down the video for my non english brain, love what you do thanks a lot
Can you please give us information about how good the Suunto race is going with vo2max estimation having in mind that the previous Suunto products were way too off.
Hi Guys, I'm not able to reach informations about integration with TP. For example if I'm using Wahoo Bolt for bike activities and for all the rest I will be using Suunto watch will be the training load recorded by Wahoo visible in Suunto app or watches? Meaning if Suunto is able to download activities recorded by different units and include them into week training load overview. Thanks!
Can you see the splits on your interval training sessions on the watch and app? I have a polar vantage v and can only see that data on the website. Polar flow all doesn't show. Each individual 400m time on a 400m x 10 session for example
Except for the display and maps, is this watch worth the extra money compared to the 9 peak?
Did you have a chance to check accuracy on mermaiding, freediving depth wise? Does the watch have an option to automatically start and stop the timer once underwater? Does it have recommended recovery interval timer before next dive?
I understand it shows depth to 10m, what happens with the depth meter after being deeper than 10m? Is it OK to dive deeper with it? Do you think this Amoled display will last shorter than Vertical display, supposedly Amoled has shorter life span (4-5years) than LED and burns out quicker. What do you think?
Thanks
At last, reborn 🎉
So it can't play music ? Why did they even released some headphones ?
The last suunto i baught was a core back about 2009, i still have it and it works great. I was to get the suunto race but with a 700 dollar australian price tag.... yikes. And thats just for the stainless version!
My new Gsrmin sports watch requires 2 mobile apps and 1 desktop app to fully control. Seems they threw KISS in the trash. I hope Suunto is simpler.
Does the flashlight shutoff automatically like the Vertical or will it stay ON until the user turns it OFF?
Looks like a solid piece of kit. I am currently the proud owner of a Suunto Spartan Ultra, a tracker that works well and I love it but it doesn’t read v02 max. And it requires a separate chest strap for heart rate monitoring. Maybe it’s time to upgrade?
Hello, how is the heart rate and GPS accuracy? How many days does the battery last with 24/7 health monitoring?
Thank you
Thanks Ray!
Does it has a continuous 24/7 heart rate monitoring?
Yup!
I'm impressed with how much the 'traditional' sport watch companies have improved their offerings (better performance, screens, UI fluidity etc, I used to have a Garmin Venu and the UI stuttered all the time and looked super basic) meanwhile Apple has stubbornly refused to fix battery life in any meaningful way... (Said as an Apple Watch user)
Is the back of the watch stainless steel or is it plastic like a Garmin 965? Can you adjust the font size for notifications? In the past with Suunto I have had issues being able to read the notifications because of my old eyes and the font size they use. Thanks for the review
The backing comes in either stainless steel or titanium. Depending on how much you want to spend
@2:46 you can see some other colours for both models. Any idea when those will be available?
The beginning audio had me confused that I was playing the latest Drop podcast 😂
It seems like a great watch but that lagging probably it's gonna get worse with time.
How is the altitude measuring on these new watches? It used to be terrible in the past and for trailrunning that is a bit of a showstopper.
And can you use music streaming services? Because Garmin Coros and Suunto all look a lot a like these days.
Suunto is not a big enough company for music streaming. Too expensive.
I would like to know if they added a countdown before repetitions in the intervals mode. It's now possibile to set the distance of repetions to OPEN? Thank you very much
can we trust the optical and HRV data on the watch?
Suunto Race of Garmin FR965?
Does this Suunto Race watch offer the "unspecified sport" option (which I use to track my ElliptiGO workouts
Has Suunto sorted its App / web site ecosystem. One of the reasons I left Suunto was its mishandled migration of App system. They closed a good, if slightly tired looking web site, to a new system which lost far too many features. It's good to see Suunto catching up, though, I don't like its three button interface. Polar's flow app / web site is probably worth the extra cost.
Funny: I am using a Garmin Epix since a year or so and what I am really missing is the Suunto app that I liked way more than the feature and designwise overloaded and dated Garmin Connect App.
Suunto has improved a lot its app, I think is one of the best, but the lack of a website is something that Suunto has to fix, especially now that they have map on their premium watch. It is not so easy, and fast, to download them only by wifi.
I need a recommendation for a good watch for hiking
nice, but here i am just wanting suunto to update the core line as well. but i guess im too old school.
Can the Suunto Race change main "time display" to other faces...??
This or Polar V3 for running ?
My first sports watch 20 years ago was a suunto. I thought they had disappeared 😂
Well, now I might have to return my 9 Peak Pro Titanium...
Suunto race or garmin 965 ? Can u select for me.
Wow!
can you use the media control while running using thr screen?
i cant do it, i need to use the buttons to control the music when running
Can you please inform us if the buttons could be pressed under the water?
Best regards
Yes, no problems.
good job Rey !!!
Hardware & price wise this new Suunto looks amazing. I just wonder if it's too late for many of us long time gps watch users? Even though $150 is a massive price delta, I know I wouldn't switch from Garmin at this point. I have over a decade of data on Garmin's platform. I like Connect. The features are amazing, and I'm just use to it. It's sorta like Apple's ecosystem lock-in. I'm here & I'm not moving. But I think Suunto's new direction will def. appeal to brand NEW customers looking for their 1st endurance/sport watch.
That’s interesting. I don’t feel the lock-in as I’m more concerned with data sent to Strava. So I feel it’s easier to swap around for sports watches. Went from Fenix to Vertical recently.
Yeah I can see how using a 3rd party platform gives you the freedom to move around. I just don't use Strava cause I was one of those old school DailyMile users. When that platform vanished I lost data. So I'm 1st party now. Also, I'm just WAY more privacy/security conscious now, so Strava is a big no for Me. @@peakproofuk
SUUNTO Race or Polar V3? Witch has the best HR and screen for example?
This or the Polar Vantage V3?
Jesus...those animations were crawling!!
This looks great!!! I still wear the suunto spartan writs HR...need to upgrade...what is the actual size of this watch as my suunto is 51mm?
