Today, Darrell Thorp is here to share his top 6 plugins. These are plugins that he uses all the time, on almost every one of his mixes.
1. Oeksound Soothe
The Oeksound Soothe is one of those plugins that works every time, in all kinds of different applications, while remaining extremely simple, quick, and easy to use. When Darrell uses the Soothe plugin, he says he can pretty much put it on a track where there is some harshness, and just let it do its thing. After that, simply adjust the depth or resolution slightly, and then let the plugin do the rest!
2. UAD Neve 1073
As far as pre-amp and EQ goes, the Universal Audio Neve 1073 Darrell’s favorite. He uses this on almost every genre of music, and it still feels and sounds incredibly musical. There are tons of options with this plugin, an Darrell loves to use this EQ on drums, vocals, keyboards, pianos, and more.
3. Plugin Alliance Brainworx Townhouse Bus Compressor
The Plugin Alliance Brainworx Townhouse Bus Compressor one of Darrell’s favorite new stereo bus compressors. He has always loved an SSL style bus compressor on his mixes. When he is working on an SSL, he generally uses the bus compressor that is in the console, and he says he has always had great success with that and enjoys how it sounds. This plugin produces results that he is just as happy with!
4. UAD Ocean Way Studios
The rooms at Ocean Way are some of Darrell’s favorite rooms, and the Universal Audio Ocean Way Studios plugin is a great emulator of those rooms. With this plugin, you have tons of options as you can choose from 3 different microphone positions - close, medium, and far - and can also choose from different mics for each of these positions. If the default position is not quite where you want it, you can adjust each of the mics to nearly any position inside the room.
5. Plugin Alliance Brainworx SSL 9000J
As Darrell loves to work on SSL consoles and loves the way they sound, this has become a favorite plugin. He says the dynamic section and the EQ sound great, and he has been loving this plugin ever since it came out.
6. Valhalla Vintage Verb
The Valhalla Vintage Verb is one of Darrell’s go-to reverbs. This plugins sounds amazing, you have mix controls, pre-delay control, and get great reverbs quickly and simply. You also have extreme control in the dampening and the shape, and so much more!
This plugin has three different versions within it: a 70s version, 80s version, and a more modern version. You can switch between these three versions to get the sound you want.

What are some of your favorite plugins?
MJUC Klanghelm
@@darlenesheffield9835 great plug in!
Console 1 - Especially Brit Class A and Summit Grand Channel. Default SSL strip is great too.
UAD Ocean Way Studios
UAD EMT140
iZotope Ozone
Melodyne
Recently UAD Capitol Chambers
Surprised plug-ins from Sonic Anomaly and Variety Of Sound.
Ocean Way Studios alone is almost worth the price of admission for the UAD world. It is a very special plugin especially if you record in your typical small home studio environment. Perfect for close-miced guitar cabs and sampled drums. Gives you that room sound your typical reverbs just can't quite give you.
Sounds amazing! Absolutely incredible!
THX have Apollo x4 , Ocean way Studios , uad API Channel Strip , and more but plug alliance has a 3 day sale. 29.00 so I picked up the { Metic AB }. Black Box , and SSL 4000E , so far
nope, IK Sunset and M1 mac. I sold all dsp uad and I'm glad I did. Sunset sound Reverb is mind blowing.
I just want to say Thank You Darrell, that was one of the most informative vids I’ve seen, like ever. I have the UA plugins you mentioned, and alts of the others, but what was so great was you talking through how they work and how you use them in context and demonstrating. Actually seeing and hearing rather than just theoretical applications was soooo good.once again Thank You.
Fantastic! Knowing what Darrell loves and uses is huge!!
Thanks ever so much! Agreed!
Darrell, You rock as usual and thank you Warren!!!!! Amazing as usual!
Thanks ever so much James!!
Excellent! Thanks for sharing Darrell. Most of these are what I've landed on as my go-to plugins as well. After experimenting and spending $$$ on so many different premium plugins over the years, I find it funny how it comes down to a channel strip with a good preamp, EQ, compressor and $50 reverb/delays. It's honestly all anyone needs to mix a professional, commercial-quality record. Toss in a couple unique creative effects and use of automation and you've got your signature sound as a mix engineer. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for these recommendations!
I just purchased the valhalla plugin and this is what I have been searching for for a long period of time meanwhile. It sounds great!
Thank you Darrell and Warren!!!!
Hi Jason, you're very welcome!
Besides his brilliant career as an artist (and yes, this collaborative specialty is art) he just seems like a sweet, funny, humble guy. And that's the best compliment of any.
Yes, agreed! I'm a huge fan of Darrell's! Great guy!
That was awesome Darrell! Thanks!
I already liked that Soothe, but that Valhalla has me wanting it now. Thank you Darrell!
Thanks ever so much Audrey!
Don't have enough experience with plugins yet, but I can see so many cool ways to express creativity with them. This handful of plugins worked well and watching Darrell tweak the tones was really fun. Thank you!
Love the format of this show 😁👌🏾💯plug-ins heaven 🤫
Thanks ever so much Jamal!
Wonderfully inspiring video. Thanks for making it!
Really helpful and great plugin tips from this amazing and experienced Engineer, awesome to get tips from the first hand 🤘🤘
Thanks for the time stamps!
You're very welcome! Thanks ever so much!
Nice recommendations. Thanks guys!
Super duper for this great tips Darrel, love how you treat the drums!!!!
Yes, spacial thanks Sebastian!
It is incredible that we can mix and master in the box and can achieve amazing results. Software has come on leaps and bounds thanks to the developers. Thank you.
Agreed 100%!
this is going to be amazing
Thanks ever so much my friend!
Such a great video!
Thanks ever so much!
Wow, he really put in the time. Great to see an expert using some of these plugins that anyone can buy.
Exactly!! Thanks ever so much
This is super helpful to all of us. Which one to choose for and such. Thanks so much.
Love the Distortion on the vocal with the 1073! I'm gonna have to mess with that more The Oceanway plugin is pretty sweet, I might have to demo that one.
I love UAD Fatso and API 2500. You guys are super inspiring. I've started my own and try a lot of your tips on there.
Thanks so much Darell! Well, now I have to add a few more plugins to my arsenal :-) I use Ocean Way all the time on virtual instrument tracks, it's absolutely amazing how it gives "flesh" to a sound which is basically just an assembly of samples (even though the samples are of high quality and the products very sophisticated). I love Valhalla reverb although I use a lot UA Capitol Chambers, this plugin is incredible on vocals, you just have to put Al Schmitt"s preset "the one" and it"s pure magic! Thanks again to you Darell and to you too Warren. Cheers
The Valhalla ones sound so cool!
Another great video! valhalla reverb and the proq 3 are the plugins I'm really considering of buying
All the Tokyo Dawn Plugins.. inspiring! 😎
Awesome video, awesome engineer.
Valhalla are amazing. I was Vintage verb and Freqecho all the time. They recently made Supermassive free as well!!! Plug plug plug.. those guys deserve it. Amazing! Great share @producelikeapro and Darrell Thorp! 🎛🤘🎤
Great video!
Thanks ever so much!
I have all these plugins and I use it all the time thanks for this honest review
Fantastic!
I have no doubt that this is really important and valuable to learn, especially from an expert! Awesome work here man!
Thanks ever so much!
@@Producelikeapro Cheers my friend!
HI@@RC32Smiths01 I asked you a question on another video, please tell me more about yourself!
@@Producelikeapro I am a musician who is fascinated with the kind of things mixing is. It looks really cool!
@@RC32Smiths01 wonderful! What's your real name? I appreciate all your support!
Thx a lot , Your a Blast to watch !! Great Advice ,
Darrell Rules!
Love that you enjoy The Vahalla Plugins perhaps the best quality /price reverbs on the planet. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Fantastic Richard! Thanks for sharing!
The UAD Neve 1081 EQ is my go-to every time for non-surgical EQ. It sounds beautiful, it gives me just enough tone shaping without getting bogged down or distracted, and it also includes a line amp circuit that immediately adds a bit of heft to the source.
Thanks ever so much Melissa for sharing!
I LOVE THIS VIDEO GUYS! THANK YOU AND CHEERS FROM VENEZUELA. 🤓👍🏻
Thanks ever so much!
Valhalla Freq Echo is FREE currently even without buying anything else.
Thanks for the great content, Warren & PLAP Crew!
Good stuff. Thanks
Very good video....great real world demonstrations....
Thanks ever so much!!
Agree!
@@rsnhf.9073 thanks!
Saving this so I can come back when I wanna get some new plugins. I’m trying to build a list of stuff I eventually want to get. So far I’ve only got stock stuff from what comes with Logic and two free ones from Izotope.
But I’m always looking for new stuff to grab whilst I’m learning more
Great video 👍🏽
Thanks ever so much Wade!
I'm still fairly "noob" to the whole plug-in thing but am becoming more and more enamored of the Waves DBX 160 compressor, API 2500 compressor, API 550 EQ and the Kramer Master Tape. The preset clicks of the API EQ boost and cut are really effective and the sound is great. Quite often, I end up just doing minor tweaks to factory presets and getting really great results. It's a huge boon to the self-engineer/producer who'd rather be on the artist side of the glass.
Just got the Adptr Metric AB. Very happy with it.
The FreqEcho was fantastic!
Agreed!
@@Producelikeapro especially for free
That clipping on the slide was killing me😩 haha
wo00ow you it look so much fun!!
Damn, I use the Mic In on the Helios 69 all the time and didn't know that the Neve has that option as well! Wheeeee! Thanks for that.
Thanks ever so much
Thank you for posting
Thanks ever so much!!
Awesome duking video
Haha thanks Jose!
Your professional insight is greatly appreciated! Thank you! I just picked up the neve 1084 and OWS plugins a couple days ago after demoing. So very rich! I have all plugins except for Valhalla delay but I am very content w/ EP34 and Galaxy echo. Valhalla echo is free. Any suggestions on a DI box for bass?
Awesome video and insight! Loved his breakdown of the Ocean Way Studio room recording locations... that could have been a video on its own!
Pushing the Neve to that super harsh distortion is actually pretty useful in parallel... the guy who mixes RTJ uses the technique a lot on bass... I love it on vocals... esp for male singers... you find the JND where you can’t hear it anymore and wham... your mix just sits better and the vocalist feels right up front
Awesome Darrell, Great choices on Plug-Ins. I miss Ocean Way. Something about SSL........
I've only just started, so imagine how thrilled I'd be if I could get some of these great plugins.
Little background story here and a following question.
I used to have a lot of fun recording and mixing using Cubase. That was a long time ago. My memory is not that good, but it must be atleast 18 years ago. I loved it. I enjoyed every minute that I could find to record my songs. Simple gear, great result.
So what happened? My computer crashed, couldn't get it fixed, I had no money, things went terribly wrong with my life and then, six years ago, I had a cerebral hemorrhage (I had to look that up) that caused me to forget a lot, it forced me to learn how to play the guitar again (I used to be good - I even gratuated at the conservatory of music in '97, but I lost it all, I couldn't play anymore), I couldn't (and still can't) read a simple manual and I lost my ways of expressing myself verbally the way I used to.
I'm doing a lot better now and the one thing that I want most is to record and mix my own music again. It took me a long time to find the means to be able to record on a 9 year old iMac, using Pro Tools and a simple audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) an SM58 and a Blue Ember. I'm overwhelmed with joy. This has taken me so long. But despite the fact that I can finally start recording again (and given the fact that my brain doesn't function the way it used to, it will not be easy for me to learn), my lack of money is still a huge thing for me.
I don't remember a lot and maybe I just remember it wrongly, but what I THINK I remember is that there used to be a lot of free VST plugins. Some of which were pretty good. Now since my brain is failing on me and my life changed so drastically and money keeps being a problem (atleast for another year - long story), are there people who can tell me where I can find some good, yet FREE plugins? Some cool stuff? Handy tools?
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to do anything illegal. I'm a musician, I want to be paid for the songs I wrote and the work I put into it. And for the very same reasons I don't want to illegally download stuff I should pay for. But I'm sure there must be some fun stuff for me to download and use for free.
Suggestions anyone? You'd make me very happy! :-)
I'm sorry for the long story. I always feel the need to explain the reasons behind questions like these.
TDR Kotelnikov is a sick free bus compressor. Also, you can do subscriptions for plug-ins. 14.99/month. Slate is good. SSL's own plug-ins are nice. Also Boz Digital is very cheap and a great place to start.
Justin Beck ; Thank you so much for your advice! ❤️
So, Daniel Thorpe is using (lets asume this is 100% real in every day situation) 3 out of 6 as I do ITB on every single production. I use Valhalla FXs, Townhouse and SSL emus by Brainworx. To fill up the cup up to "fantastic 6" I am adding MAAT's EQ (SantaCruz) and a metering tool (DR Meter MK2). Lately I added a brand new and amazing mastering grade compressor Unisum. Team behind Unisum deserves full recognition and exposure.
Darrell is a badass!!
Yes, he is!!
I have the Townhouse Buss Compressor but I really like the sound of IK Multimedia's version of the SSL buss compressor. I use that all the time.
me too. ill have to try out the IK
@@ractorstudios marvellous!
Thanks for sharing Larry!
I had a moment with IK's Bus Comp. If you ever get tired of its mid bump, check out the free BusterSE plugin from Analog Obsession (and Britpressor is really nice too for less snap and a little more color).
@@dirkchurlish4074 Too bad there is no AAX version for my DAW, Pro Tools!
Of the groups I cover he recorded. Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Goo Goo Dolls , Radiohead , The Wallflowers, Filter. He has 9 Grammy awards. Holy Shit !!!!!
All amazing albums!
Thank you for your knowledge, what do you think about the Townsend microphone if it was the only big diaphragm mic you cool buy, and if it was, what about two of them?
Karzog s Tru Iron and good ole decapitator
Tru Iron is a really smooth saturator, I use it to mangle a parallel vocal or parallel drum bus
🤘🤘🤘
A Mazing!
Thanks ever so much!
Soothe 2 is such a game changer
Don’t have Soothe or Valhalla Vintage. I know Darrel mentioned it but I love the new 1084. Being able to shape/focus the top sheen of a track with the lo pass filter in conjunction w/ the high shelf is important to me. Also love Megaverb by Goodhertz, oh and their Vulfcomp is jaw dropping. Love kazrog’s True Dynamics & Iron. Otherwise, yeah - the uad 1073 is still the right choice in cases. the OWS is something I use when I post-edit small room recorded drum tracks every single time; I usually bounce the three tailored ‘distances’ separately to audio tracks, keep phase in check and then drop the audio right into my drum bus and blend to taste.
thx!
The Nonlin on the ValhallaVintageVerb works a little bit different than the other algorithms. The Decay knob doesn't seem to do anything. You have better control of the envelope of the reverb using the Shape: Size and Shape: Attack controls.
Having 3 of the 6 already aint bad
Yes, indeed! Thanks ever so much!
You have a hardware Weiss DS1 in the rack behind you, but are you using the Softube Plugin? It's not an emulation, but ported code directly from DS1-Mk3, so it is identical, and you can run multiple instances. Their Weiss EQ1, is stunningly good too. I agree with MakerPD about Console 1. Couldn't run my studio without it now! Lets you mix with your ears again not with your eyes/mouse, with great workflow.
I would like to know how he has his computer monitor attached to his desk. Also what monitor he is using. I want to get my screen much closeer to me but angled, this looks bang on. Warren can you find out?
Great video, thanks! Sounds like he's working on some Will Hoge?
Hi Bob, it's Robert Jon and the Wreck!
townhouse is sweet :)
Agreed! Amazing!
What is the name of the song and the artits? ANyone knows? Sounds Really great !!
I have alot of Waves plugins and alot of Plugin Alliances plugins and many more that Ive purchased here and there, I don't need anymore!!..Ohh who am I kidding, I cant stop buying them
Do you use Soothe version one rather than the latest Soothe2
@ Valhalla Vintage Verb, I went WOO! too.
If you complete the user survey in plugin alliance you get a 25 bucks voucher. So you can get this buss compressor for $15. I got the maag EQ4 instead (15 bucks too). If I saw this video before I would have purchased the comp. Anyways, I'm so surprised/pleased with the maag that I don't regret it. Your call, guys... just passing information here lol
Bani Grisson What user survey? Where’s that?
I was watching another video then this one popped due to UA-cam's algorithm .I heard the intro and i was ok cool then went to grab some coffee and suddenly i heard a different voice and i was like ''where's Warren ? '' :P :P :P
In your opinion which ones better quality for the price that you would pay a $50 plugin emulating a real piece of equipment or the real expensive piece of equipment?
Didn’t know Steven Slate was singing professionally. Cool
had the same reaction @25:48 lol
I'd be interested to know what Andrew Scheps top 6 plugs are -- seeing as he works completely ITB now.
@Frank Lee Probably...
@@JustinNathanielAdams I'd love to know as well!
@Frank Lee the Omni channel is amazing!
Valhalla is incredible
Yes, it's amazing!
Apart from looking nice and having great branding. Is there something that can't be achieved with stock plugins?
anything? yes, but I would easily say that (most) stock plugins are more than good enough for beginners and even intermediate people. I would never say the problem with a mix is that a neve 1073 wasn't used on the vocal. That being said, some third party plugins really good. Soothe2 deals with harshness better than anything else. You can technically use MB compression with narrow bands but it's a lot harder and sensitive to pitch changes. Some tools just don't exist in some DAWS, deessers being an example (some deessers work like MB compressors, and MB compressors can be used, though, so not a great example i guess).
Also, different compressors and eqs sound different. However, they don't have the same effect as changing microphone or room, so that's where your priorities should be.
Special Processors like soothe, DSEQ, the sonible stuff, gullfoss, dynamic EQs etc. are usually not found as stock plugins in DAWs. Doesn’t mean you cannot mix without them, but they can make life easier.
Soothe, Entropy eq+, Waves SSL Bus compressor, Waves AR Saturator, Rev Plate140, CLA Mixhub, Scheps Particles, Omnichannel, 73, Tokyo Dawn Labs eq M. All TC Electronic hybrid 2290, 1210, 8210 and DVR250, Most of the Harrison xt plugins, Waves SSL G-channel, Waves BSS dpr402, Wavbes AR Studio3, AR Chambers, AR j34, Orchid chorus, Izotope Ozone 8/9 Elements/ Vinyl, pfff what else...
What about those damn roses? I’ve had it with them!
1:11 😂
Why dont you have a discord? Or why dont u put the link on your vids?
I have all except the Neve 1073..where's my wallet...
Skip the 1073 and go straight to the new 1084 Preamp. Same EQ but you get the extra EQ band which is totally worth it!
Haha I hear you Paul! Thanks ever so much!
@@0dtp1 Thanks ever so much!
Anyone else having trouble with that Valhalla Freq Echo plugin? I find it a pain in the butt - I set the delay sync to any given number, close the plugin window, and it resets itself to something else. I should probably take this to the Google machine, but just curious about you lot
SoulChorea have the same problem with some sync settings. Not all. I think it’s only the display, but it is annoying.
A m6/9 thank you - I couldn’t find anything in the forums so at some point I’ll have to reach out to tech support
I own just 4 outta the 6 plugins. I don't have a UAD hardware nor software
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Okay. Siniswhatitis!
Is pt ever going to fix their shitty plugin windowing? I don't think I could deal with windows3-league aesthetic ignorance.
UAD APi Ch. strip, Tube tech Ch. Strip Softube
Thanks ever so much for sharing
TBPROAUDIO DSEQ does the Oeksound Soothe but at a much cheaper price
Whats the song and artist?
The Artist is Robert Jon and the Wreck, it's from a new amazing g course we are doing with Darrell Thorp!
Produce Like A Pro cool! really cool song!
I can believe he uses that delay and having tons of gear. Maybe it’s sponsored ?
He mixes entirely in the box! Always! All of these plug ins are made by different companies that would be difficult to get anyone to sponsor a video that shows off different companies at the same time! Haha I wish you all the best!
He's very well known for mixing in the box, so why would he need to use the hardware Delays?
@@timbrown7652 exactly! Thanks for your great comment!
bx_townhouse is now 40 bucks at plugin alliance. No brainer.
Fantastic!! Love that plug in!!
I compared Townhouse Bus Comp with a stock compr in Logic 9 and it sounded the same. Then I compared Waves SSL Bus comp . . . and it was much better. In the video . . he didn't level match it. So in my opinion . . . it is not that good.
I so badly want to mix on a console
Consoles are rather wonderful to work on indeed!
@@Producelikeapro I've been thinking of building one since it would be too expensive. Will probably be a year's project lol
Now, we need FREE VERSIONS... Lol! But, seriously -Someone chime in. Thanks...
