I love that they still use Nintendo Power instead of just looking it up on the internet. I'm not aware of any other Let's Play channels that do that, and I think it really adds to the experience.
Watching these is a blast. This was the first game my parents bought for me along with the N64 when I was 6. I couldn't pass the sewer level because I was scared shitless of the octopus-like things underwater :(
I love watching this series because it really feels like 2 kids playing the game. a bit more cynical to be sure; but some of the reactions are just so genuine that it's a hoot.
I've noticed that doing this game in first person is a lot easier to play through the game because everything is auto targeted for you a bit better. 3rd person is only useful when you are using the jet pack later in the game. But that's just me. Man, this brings back childhood memories. Me and my dad would always switch off the controller between levels. The whole game was fun, except for the turret sections.
Actually, when James and I were playing this, I noticed the first person was easier as well. Not in every situation, but overall, it was the angle to go for. Now I know for next time. -Mike
I love it when you guys play through entire games like this, it makes us relate and relive the same frustrations and fun we had when we played these games. Can't wait to see more videos like this, do more series!
I love James & Mike Mondays, one of the best video games commentary, their funny easily watchable, huge amount of hilarious moments, and the chemistry between Mike and James is god tier.
Baboska Thanks! Glad you're enjoying James & Mike Mondays so much! What's your favorite episode? And do you you have any games you'd like to see us cover? -Mike
Cinemassacre My favorite episode are the Super Ghouls 'n Gouls, Universal Studios Theme Park, and theses Star wars episodes, but I really do enjoy everything you guys make. And It would be awesome if you guys played Twisted Metal 2 for the PS1 and battling it out between you and James. That would be fucking great. Thanks for reply. :D
yeah, I always thoguht the train level was fun but boba fett beat the shit out of me as a kid. I finally beat him years later but then I think the sewer stage is next and I don't think I ever finished that one
This is by far my favorite N64 game of all time. Its so nostalgic for me as i played it as a kid too. I remember being so good at it. Love getting those flashbacks to when i played it watching you guys
Some communities are full of agressive "fans" that hate everything, some are really funny and witty, some are filled with teenager girls... And then there's this. To Mike, I still think you should try to draw something decent using LJN Video Art, that'd be your ultimate artistic test.
Try doing the sewer level on expert! Fucking challenging! Medium is challenging as it is but it gets ridicously challenging at the Gall Spaceport level. Anyway, I love the game and I still remember how to get through most of the levels. What would make me happy is an HD remake!
+Illusive Man OMG! The Gladiator Droid. It starts off easy but gets more difficult throughout the fight. When its just the head, its harder to hit cuz the thing can move fast. The best strategy, stock up on disruptor bombs, try to get far from him, take flight and try to hit the nearest wall with the disruptor bombs. Should put him out of misery!
13:19 "i'm trying to get the higher ground, that's what i'm trying to do..." that higher ground thing really seems to pop up in any star wars related stuff, doesn't it?
I think the instruction manual gave you hints for this game. The train yard for instance I remember reading don't jump trains while they turn. As for the Boss levels you had to spend time going around picking up seeker missals, plasma, and various other ammo unless you stocked up prior. Plus there is tons of health lying around. You kinda have to explore the Boss level and not just attack head on. Especially later when you face Boba Fett because you have to take out his ship and you cant do that with normal laser ammo.
The conversations Mike and James have, remind me of the conversations I used to have with my friends when I was seven. On a different note, it's pretty safe to say that Shadows of the Empire is one of the better games for the N64, along with Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64. Maybe Mario.
This playthrough inspired me to purchase this game for my n64 again. It's been so long since I've played through it that I forgot how good it really is! I really enjoy the playthrough guys, I can't wait for part 3!
That junkyard level SUCKS, and IG-88 is a tough out. I remember getting here for the first time back in 1996 and wanting to chuck my controller for distance. The length of the level is too long, and checkpoints are scarce. Then IG-88 is overpowering the first few times you face it, until you've had enough time to formulate an attack strategy. Unlike most boss fights at the time, there's no way to really analyze IG-88's attack pattern, and retaliating the wrong way or with blunt force puts you in a firefight that you lose often. I imagine that, if this game was remade today (kinda like Turok, which had some unnecessarily tough/erratic platforming), it'd play better... mostly because the camera issues would be fixed. Jumping from car to car is tough to judge with the camera angles given, and made worse by the controls (which take time to get used to). Really excited that there's a Part 3. Gonna beat this thing, aren't you guys?
I was young at the time, but I remember it being pretty challenging as a game. It's still one of the best star wars titles of that generation though, for sure.
this is one of your funniest vids in a while! you guys are so into it just like when it was new, screaming, jumping, scared of the bosses, etc. its great to see the youth come back out.
My cousin was very good at this game when it came out. He defeated the AT-ST by jumping up on the higher ledges and shooting all of his seekers into it. On the junkyard level he found a spot where the droid would jump up and down but never shoot. I don't know how he ever figured that out.
I also found the invincibility power up on one of the ledges too i think, helped a lot. That at/st was easy to beat, the second one you had to beat was tough as nails though.
This is such a great episode. You can see the boys reverting to being 8 years old again. Mike being like "Over there you idiot!" and James showing us his thumb and saying "I jumped, see?!" as if that proves anything.
So glad James and Mike are doing this game. The music, levels, and overall nostalgia make this one of my favorite Star Wars games ever Try first person if you're having trouble with the camera angles. I find that first person gives you a better sense of depth for the platforming, and aiming seems to lock on to enemies better For this game I find that first person works best for on-foot gameplay, while third person works best for any vehicular gameplay
I'm so glad you guys are playing this. This is one of the best star wars games I ever played. It's really cool to watch you guys run through it again! It's making me want to drag out my old 64 and fire this one up.
I loved this game growing up. If you input the WOMPA STOMPA cheat, you could actually control NPC's using the D-PAD and L button. Me and my brother would both share one controller - he would control a storm trooper, and I would control the main character. Same camera angle for two players. Good times.
Keep up the updates guys, subbed and lovin it. Watching these vids helps me relax and reminds me of the good ol' days when I used to watch my cousins play video games for hours. Shadows of the Empire is still, to this day, one of my most favorite Star Wars games. You guys got the strategy down right on the AT-STs, but thought I'd point out a helpful hint: try shooting the blaster around 4-5 shots, then stop for a sec to let the percentage rise back up to 100%, then repeat. By doing that, you get max damage with the blaster every time and do more damage over time with it. If you just keep tapping it and hitting the enemy with a low percentage on your blaster, you'll do very little damage. That's why it's best to shoot a couple of volleys at a time, then wait for the number by the blaster to go back up to 100 and repeat for max damage.
The vehicle levels are THE reason you play this game. They're gated behind tough as nails Dash levels that are hard as fuck. I remember wanting to get to the Speeder level so BAD when I was kid, but it was gated behind a gigantic canyon level that took hours to navigate with Boba Fett to greet you at the end. Freakin' BOBA FETT. This game made you WORK for that Speeder level!
any tanks or large moving siege can be taken out by single units if they maneuver correctly and target their weakness. The point of heavy artillery and siege is to target large groups of units in front of it
You should see the debug cheat for this game; you literally have to move the analog controller with your face because of how many buttons you have to press. xD
Merchant2006 You had to hold down a bunch of buttons, then use your face to press the analog stick to the left for 5 seconds, right 5 seconds, left 5 seconds (might have the directions mixed up, but you get the idea).
Mike, you can use a GameCube controller on N64, with an adapter like this one : www.raphnet-tech.com/products/gc_to_n64_adapter/ There are a few other homemade circuits you can assemble yourself to do the same thing, as well. Would be interested to hear how you and James find games like this play with the different controller.
That's pretty badass. I'll have to look into that sometime. Though I don't know if I'd want to use it for a video like this. Since part of the fun is reliving what it was like to play these games back in the day. Thanks for watching! -Mike
...so, Im not the only one who was kinda scared/disturbed/freaked out/whatever by the IG-88 fight when they were younger, right? There was just something very unnerving about it all.
planescaped C'mon you can go further. Outside of Dooku and Vader's opening moves in ESB they never even use typical sabre style moves. Star Wars lightsaber duels are blends of katana and longsword moves.
I'm not big on Star Wars but this game looks awesome. If it wasn't for the shitty camera angle and the shitty N64 controller, this game would be the shit. Someone should remake this game for the newer generation. I'd play it for sure.
It doesn't help that he keeps button mashing, and keeps pressing the manual aim button even when the game has auto aim. He keeps shooting at his own feet...
The Camera angle's aren't that bad in this game, you can use the trigger button to look around at your will as well. The N64 controller isn't shitty either. It just has the unfortunate flaw being made for someone with 3 arms. If you want a shitty controller look at the Coleicalvision.
God, this game. Hoth, the wampas you had to shoot a million times. I just stood still and tapped the B button until the lasers all fused together into one big beam. The battle with IG-88 on Ord Mantell, the sound he made used to scare the shit outta me. And he jumped all over the place. One Hell of a bossfight. Gall Spacestation and the fight with Boba Fett and Slave-1, the sewers, Xizor's palace and that big fucking robot with the floating head. The speederbike level, am I the only one that always went back and cruised around Mos Eisley after killing the swoop gang? And last but not least the Skyhook Battle. This game should be a movie. Disney, do you hear me? Make it happen.
The scariest boss I ever defeated growing up IG-88, Recently picked up a nice metal articulate 10" figurine of him. So cool, thanks for the awesome videos guys! Cheers from Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada

good game, but nes hard
Watching this puts me in the mood to play Star Wars games again...
Why do they always refer to extra lives as "extra guys" and stages as "boards"? Is that NES lingo or something?
Old school gaming terminology
IG-88 still gives me nightmares.
Mike has a huge... Collection of N64 games and accessories...
Haakon Anderson Atari
That fight with ig88 shows some of the best tense moments a videgame can give. (Even if the controls were kinda shitty)
The IG-88 boss fight was terrifying! The weird sound he makes when he moves and the place is all claustrophobic. It was so nerve-wracking!
The train level scared me, the noise of that droid, and the speeding train... the music and if you dont make it off, the firey explosion. Scaryyyyyy
That's what I love about old consoles, you can get your friends with you and have fun.
"GO ANYWHERE! NOT THERE!!!! ANYWHERE!!! FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Its always funny when it isn't happening to you.

So glad you guys are continuing this next week, it really comes into it's own on the next level, I believe.
I love Mike's Star Wars 'fanboy' impression. Hahaha!

I remember playing this game as a kid, I loved it!

This very well might be James and Mike's finest hour(s).
