    How smooth -- like riding a couch! I spent some time riding a quarter horse / Belgian cross -- it was so comfy and smooth, and Bobby looks even nicer!

    Sorry for a silly question .. but do Mules have shoes like Horses, or have they hooves like a Donkey ?

    • @ByrdMann2010
      @ByrdMann2010 3 роки тому +2

      Not silly if you don't know. Horses and donkeys, and therefore mules, all have hooves. "Shoes" are applied by a farrier, they are not born with them. The hoof, as seen on all equines, is the remnant of what we humans know as fingernails, specifically the first 2 fingers. If you look at a horse's (or donkey's or mule's) hoof from the bottom you will see that it has a left and right side. These are the vestiges of the two fingers - what's left of both the boney and the soft fleshy parts.

    • @bpattique8753
      @bpattique8753 3 роки тому

      @@ByrdMann2010 Thank you for your response .. so if a person say owned a Mule or a Donkey would you have it shod by a farrier on a regular basis like you would a Horse ?

    • @ByrdMann2010
      @ByrdMann2010 3 роки тому +2

      @@bpattique8753 Mixed answer to that one. Yes, farriers do shoe work. Whether or not you have your equine shod depends on the type of use they will see. These days, many of us op for a "natural hoof" as our animals don't really have a need for the traction and other benefits of a shoe. However, as I described the hoof being like a fingernail, just like a fingernail a horse's hoof needs to be trimmed on a regular basis and this is also done by a farrier. Most of us have it done about every 6-8 weeks. I've been told that mule hooves grow a little slower and don't need trimming quite as often. I don't have practical knowledge of this yet. I have no idea how often a donkey would need to be trimmed, just that they would as well.

    • @bpattique8753
      @bpattique8753 3 роки тому +1

      @@ByrdMann2010 I had no idea about any of this, the only thing I knew is that horses are shod regularly. I've not seen a Mule, or a Donkey for that matter for years. Years ago around where I used to live, there was a large and very strong looking Mule used by a local delivery man. That Mule was such a good and patient animal and I do think enjoyed being made a fuss of by all us children on his route around our district .. anyway, thank you again for your response 😊

    • @nicstr28
      @nicstr28 2 роки тому +1

      Mules hoofs are a lot harder than a horses and dont need trimmed as often as a horse. Part of what makes them great on rough,rocky trails.

    It is nice to know a mule can run or canter. However, a mule this size has a nice long stride with plenty of strength for endurance to cover a whole lot of ground. So the better choice is to stick with walking the mule where its long easy walking stride covers the ground. I always thought you were supposed to be nice, calm, easy going by walking the mule. The strength and long strides of the animal allow you to go the distance without getting the mule all tired. Running a mule seems counterproductive to me because its strengths are its long walking strides, strength and endurance.
    I would rather walk a mule for 20 miles than run it for a half a mile, make it tired or have it step in a badger hole or God forbid break a leg. Save the running for the Kentucky Derby track because in the real world you just want to go nice and easy on your mule or horse. Trotting a short distance is okay but running an animal is something to avoid in the real world of badger holes, rocks and gopher mounds. All of these can trip or hurt an animal. You walk the animal to enjoy the day but also so you the human don't have to walk home with a sad face after injuring an animal.
