Me: *a month ago* for my first pathfinder game ever, I’m gonna play a battle mystery oracle :))) Nonat: Oracle is the MOST complicated Pathfinder 2E class Me: *now* YEAH IT IS
Since this is your favorite class maybe you can help me out here because I am trying to create an Oracle for an upcoming game. The curse seems to be incredibly restrictive since there is so much emphasis on having domain and Oracle revelation spells. What is the point of having a 2 or even a 3 focus pool if you can't use it. Ie at lower levels if you use an Oracle spell earlier in the day or your at minor curse for whatever reason you can only cast one focus spell and no not end up overwhelmed. At higher levels if you're in minor you can only cast 2. This seems massively restrictive Since so many feats give you a focus point and an extra focus spell. Especially since you can't even get to major until a high enough level most players never reach
@@ketrava0425 You can use them. Casting normal spells doesn't progress your curse, only casting revalation spells (focus spells with the revalation tag) progresses the curse. You can go up to a moderate curse at 1st level, and refocusing drops you back down to minor. At 11th level. you gain a focus point at the same time as you gain access to your major curse. Hopefully that helps!
Correction on Moonlight Bridge: The enemies automatically fall straight through, they cannot walk on the bridge AT ALL. Given the fact you can angle it up and the bridge doesn't have to connect to anything, its basically a full-party flight spell. There's a reason I say Cosmos is the best Mystery.
While I don't always agree with your opinions on what you're discussing, your observations and explanations provide incredibly helpful insight to how the mechanics actually work for players new and old. You're one of the only accounts doing informational deep dives like these and I appreciate the hell out of it, it has helped my new players beyond anything I could have ever done. Keep up the great work!
fun fact. space is roughly 3 degrees Kelvin( -273c or -454.27F). however because there are so few particles to impact against you, you dont lose heat to conduction or convection as quickly so thats why people dont instantly freeze
My first ever pathfinder character was a cosmos oracle and I love the class so much and that mystery xD besides CHA I made CON her highest stat and she was like so tanky for a spellcaster (that physical resistance is incredible)
i think the best part about ancestral form is that you can still sustain spells while youre in your ghost form so if you have a flaming sphere or summoned creature (or both) you can just keep spamming sustain and not worry about being disrupted
Played a Cosmos last night for the first time in Plaguestone, it was great! Enfeebled in a bar fight with physical damage resistance at level 1 -- so good!
That physical damage resistance is NUTS at level 1! Against any 1d4 unarmed strike from an untrained humanoid, you're likely taking almost no damage at all!
It's so weird to me that Cosmos Oracles can't choose Star as one of their domains. I wonder if that's because it was from Gods & Magic? Feels like the most thematically appropriate domain, and it's got interesting focus spells to boot.
Some additions to the great video. Ancestors: Ancestral Form lets you fly, including upwards (and it's not difficult terrain for you), plus the exploration and stealth options of being invisible and resistant to physical damage. Battle: Having fast healing means that every time you are dying at the beggining of a turn, you automatically lose the dying condition and wake up again with some hit points, and you have your turn. Bones: Negative healing means that you are inmmune to negative damage. Which means that you can blast some negative damage spells (like sudden blight) with you in the area without a problem. Also, the intereraction between upgrading a major curse (wounded 1) to the Extreme Curse (doomed 2), is extremely dangerous since you can be permanently dead in one hit. I don't know if that was intended or not. Cosmos: Enfeebled also affects encumbrance, so be careful with what you carry. 2. As a GM, I would not include Trip as forced movement (because it is against Reflex), but I will count the trip damage as falling damage. And the most imporant part of this: lnterstellar Void starts with a Fortitude Save, not a basic one. AFTER the target is already affected you can sustain the spell and they get a Basic Fortitude Save. If they critically succeed the first save they are not affected, but that is the only way they can avoid that spell.
Some very solid points made here! Regarding Interstellar Void, the way it's written looks like the "Saving Throw: Fortitude" is referring to the basic save itself. With the way that the spell is worded, they get a Basic Save right when you cast it and every following turn when you sustain it. I take this to mean that, even if they crit succeed their initial save, you can keep the void around them, forcing saves on all following turns. The void itself doesn't disappear regardless of the initial save as it's more like a physical effect you sustain (similar to something like animated assault).
Want to note that it's understandable that the you weren't enthusiastic about the negative healing bonus for bones considering they don't even mention it gives negative immunity too. Probably just an oversight, wish they would've just snuck a little box detailing that trait's effects instead of summing it up and only listing its two downsides and only ONE of the upsides.
The oracle was by far my favorite 1E class. I was super happy with the 2E version. I kinda miss mix and match curses, but for balance this was the best choice. I can't wait for more mysteries to be printed!
Omg!! This is the video I’ve been waiting for since I first bought the APG!! I’m playing a Goblin Oracle with Ancestry mystery. She’s elderly and speaks mostly in creepy but playful rhymes. I named her Baga because she’s kind of a mix of Yoda and Baba Yaga.
Been enjoying the content! I'd say that finding your videos while scouring youtube for pathfinder 2e stuff was quite the revelation. Why I didn't find them sooner is a mystery. Also, have an algorithm bump... Have a Kit Kat.
35:00 A sideways bridge that connects to verticle pillars becomes a wall. It specifies they pass through if they attempt to cross the bridge, so this may prevent this from working.
Fun fact about the Bones Oracle: A Dhampir who takes the Svetotcher ancestry feat gets to calculate the drained condition as if it were 1 less. This means that Dhampir bones oracles basically get to ignore the most debilitating part of their moderate curse.
I'm currently running the Age of Ashes for my PFS group, and at the end of the AP, the players are awarded with some new, unique backgrounds to use for future characters. The reason I bring this up, is that I have a PFS character planned for after the AP is done: A Kobold Ancestors Oracle using the 'Touched by Dahak' background. My thought is that, rather than being haunted by his ancestors, the kobold is haunted by the lingering essence of Dahak's character. Can't wait to play him! :D
Oh hey, you're actually totally right! I didn't realize that "Stupefied" inflicted a status-penalty specifically! That makes a ton of sense and makes the major curse a bit less negative.
@@CyberBlastoise Not exactly. 1e penalties aren't typed at all. They way it works is that penalties from the same source don't stack. So for example if a spell gave you a penalty to attack rolls, being hit by that same spell again even if cast by another caster wouldn't stack.
Around 8:50 you mention playing a fighter and being able to get the moderate curse with the Oracle Dedication/Archetype. I read through the Oracle archetype and I'm fairly certain you cannot progress your curse beyond minor with the archetype. The First Revelation Oracle archetype feat states: > Use the minor curse from your mystery, but when you progress it again, instead of your mystery's moderate curse effect, you become flat-footed in addition to the effects of the minor curse.
Yeah, unfortunately I learned that after posting this video. It's a sad fact, but I understand why they did it. Sadly, my oracle fighter will simply be doing it for the flavor now.
@@Nonat1s I keep expecting to be able to get the moderate curse through the archetype and have to remind myself every time I look at it that it's just the minor curse. I get it, but at the same time, I wish there was a little more potential there, because I feel like there isn't a reason to take oracle archetype over cleric except maybe to grab the initial focus spell at 4th level or whatever, but the domain spells are pretty solid and don't give you nasty penalties.
@@epee11c Unfortunately, the only real reason to take Oracle over Cleric is to cast with Charism over Wisdom. I'm shocked they didn't add like a level 8 feat that would allow you to reach moderate curse. I may see if my GM will allow me to homebrew that, as I don't think it'd be too overly powerful..
With how busted some of the curses are if you combine them with other classes, I honestly prefer that they did not let other classes access the full curses. At least it is impossible for a multiclass oracle to be overwhelmed. The Oracle has some nice feats, cast with charisma, and has great focus spells. Maybe later they get more sweet things. I think that they are just as good as any other spellcasting multiclass dedication.
I think you might have made a small mistake at 08:00 , I think it isn't any action that isn't a strike, I think it is any action listed on the other ancestors so any skill or spell action would result in a flat check. You could raise a shield, command a minion or move for instance without having to roll. (seems you're correcting it in the 11'th min)
Currently playing through the fall of plaguestone as an Orc battle oracle and let me tell you... its the most inefficient way to play a barbarian without being a barbarian! And its fun so far. I would say the moderate curse is not as punishing as it seems, since more than likely you are making 2 strikes per turn to get rid of the debuff. Definitely could see this option dropping off pretty quickly in the mid levels, since all other martial characters are just hitting more easily than you would, but for low levels its nice!
I mostly talk about gameplay in these videos, but in my opinion: Flavor is greater than efficiency, so if you're having fun then it's doing well!! Plus that Party Initiative Buff will ALWAYS be useful.
The Oracle always attracts me because it is original to PF ! My first PF1 character was an Oracle (a Dwarf, with burnt hands -4 to hit :P, Ancestor Mystery).
I'll explain it when I go over class features, but all curses have the same "Extreme" effect. You unlock it at level 17. "When affected by your extreme curse, you become doomed 2 (or increase your doomed condition by 2 if you were already doomed). Once every 10 minutes, when you fail an attack roll, skill or Perception check, or saving throw, you can reroll it and use the second result. The reroll has the fortune trait and doesn't require you to spend an action, meaning you can use the reroll even if you can't act. These effects are in addition to all the effects of your major curse, and they can't be removed by any means until you Refocus to reduce your curse to its minor effect"
Would be good for a Monk to take the Oracle -> Battle subclass archetype? You don't care about being stupefied (well, not regarding spells...) and those +6 damage, when you attack so often, could be good, right?
Started a 2e campaign. Rolled battle oracle. I'm doomed. Also, since you mentioned Sailor moon, Cosmos gets moon domain spells, one being "touch of the moon" aka "turn your dwarf barb into sailor moon", something I was strongly considering before I settled on this woeful gish.
I've been kinda disappointed that PF doesn't really have anything equivalent to a warlock (or a bladelock at that) but the battle oracle seems to scratch that itch for me.
I just wish the battle curse was a bit stronger. With how brutal the negative effects are, I wish the bonuses were a +1 to hit while moderate and a +2 to hit when major. That would at least make it stronger than the Ancestral Curse (Martial).
@@Nonat1s im not sure how this would end up being balance wise but could possibly be at least thematically cool if the curse raised your proficiency in martial weapons as it got worse. Yeah it would be knocking on the fighter's door with a legendary proficiency eventually but you'd have to be on the major curse for that
I've an Oracle question, if you take the Oracle dedication one of the feats you can take is called "First Revelation" which outlines how the curse progresses when using revelation spells BUT what if you only take Basic Mysteries (Domain Acumen - Initial domain spell which you cast as a revelation spell with the cursebound trait) THEN you gain focus points from anywhere else, use those focus points on Initial domain spell twice... what happens? No curse at all until "First Revelation"? Moderate effect from Curse?
Looking into this question, I've learned some REALLY unfortunate facts about the Oracle Dedication. You CANNOT progress beyond minor curse effects with the dedication. If you take Domain Acumen, yes it will be cursebound and activate your curse, but no matter what level you are, if you try to extend your curse beyond minor, you become permanently flat-footed until you refocus. You cannot achieve moderate or higher. "Use the minor curse from your mystery, but when you progress it again, instead of your mystery’s moderate curse effect, you become flat-footed in addition to the effects of the minor curse." Seems like the main draw of the Oracle Dedication is "Mysterious Breadth" which grants you some extra spell slots.
@@Nonat1s Right, you're quoting from "First Revelation" (FR) - I'm saying what if you DON'T take it, what's happening with the curse at that point? is there no progression at all due to "You gain the mild, constant effects of the mystery's curse described in its first paragraph, BUT NOT OTHER EFFECTS THE MYSTERY USUALLY GRANTS" sorry, caps because I can't bold that part.
@@brentoncarmichael2748 Ohh, now I see what you're saying. Hmm, that's super vaguely worded. My final interpretation is that, yes, you can cast the spell obtained from Domain Acumen. It will have the "Cursebound" trait, but it does not progress your curse at all. The only way you can progress your curse is to take "First Revelation". Once you've taken that feat, any "Cursebound" focus spell will progress your curse. It's not perfect, and I believe this will hopefully be errated to make more sense in the future.
I recently posted about this on reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/jbyrp9/oracle_multiclass_dedication_and_cursebound/ The dedication feat gives you mild effects, but not any other effects from the curse. To cast a cursebound spell you have to have a curse, it's in the trait; but the dediction itself states that other than the mild flavor, you don't get other effects. Right now, it seems that you must take First Revelation if you want to cast any cursebound spells. I hope there is an errata.
My first ever 1e character was a Metal Mystery Half Orc Oracle and I'm super hoping Metal Mystery makes a return. Tho I'm not sure what the curse would consist of.
I'm confused by this class. You get more focus points early on and can recover 2 instead of 1 when you refocus, but you are limited on how many you can use because you'll become overwhelmed and unable to cast focus spells. If this is correct, then the extra focus points and recovery are meaningless unless you take a dedication that also gives a non-revelation focus spell to use. Am I wrong?
Still watching the video and notice that if you don't have your curse active and use the Battlefield Persistence reaction focus spell you gain +2 to the saving throw but then become cursed and take a -1 to saving throws, removing half of the bonus from the spell.
Why did you do an alchemist deep dive, then the barbarian, and then follow it up with oracle? I was looking forward to a bard deep dive, but I guess that will have to wait.
I actually started out with the Investigator Deep Dive, followed by Alchemist and Barb. I'm following the pattern of an APG class, 2 CRB classes, APG class, 2 CRB classes, etc.
@@Nonat1s The oracle is looking good so far. It's nice to see the oracle's curse actually cause detrimental effects in 2e. In 1e, the curse penalty was hardly noticeable.
an important note for battle mystery, status penalities don't stack, so stupefied and the penalty to saving throws don't stack, just the worse one applies
I'm playing a level 20 Gestalt Barbarian/Oracle. Very cool to roleplay, mechanically it's a mess and a very bad mix. Casting while raging is hard enough. But add the curse to all this?? Yeah it's fun, but if you want to min/max, choose something else lol
Personally I hate how the 2e Oracle is designed. It's not any mechanical flaw, it's just that coming from the 1e Oracle, this one feels so railroaded. With the 1e -> 2e Cleric you can pick any domain while still getting the Caster/Martial option (because I understand you shouldn't be a god at both like 1e Cleric). However, 2e Oracle doesn't get that choice whereas they previously did. I also don't like how every Mystery has a specific curse, but I suppose that's something that could be changed with alternate class options in the future. The whole way curses are handled through is amazing, and I think if my two other issues were fixed in the future then Oracle would go back to being my favorite class again.
The whole drawback that you can’t mitigate in any way, bugs the munchkin part of my brain. One combo I found interesting though was combining Dragon Barbarian with Flame Oracle. I initially thought of the idea because I thought the temp hp could help soak up the damage and then as I was looking into it I realized that fire rage damage combo’d well with incendiary aura. As for ancestries there is of course dragonborn, or perhaps elemental heart dwarf, or if you really want to go all in with the pyromania there is torch goblin.

This gave me the idea for an "air head" claustrophobic halfling...(cosmos mystery, fortune teller background)
Yeah it would be knocking on the fighter's door with a legendary proficiency eventually but you'd have to be on the major curse for that
Legit love it
I've an Oracle question, if you take the Oracle dedication one of the feats you can take is called "First Revelation" which outlines how the curse progresses when using revelation spells BUT what if you only take Basic Mysteries (Domain Acumen - Initial domain spell which you cast as a revelation spell with the cursebound trait) THEN you gain focus points from anywhere else, use those focus points on Initial domain spell twice... what happens? No curse at all until "First Revelation"? Moderate effect from Curse?
Looking into this question, I've learned some REALLY unfortunate facts about the Oracle Dedication. You CANNOT progress beyond minor curse effects with the dedication. If you take Domain Acumen, yes it will be cursebound and activate your curse, but no matter what level you are, if you try to extend your curse beyond minor, you become permanently flat-footed until you refocus. You cannot achieve moderate or higher.
"Use the minor curse from your mystery, but when you progress it again, instead of your mystery’s moderate curse effect, you become flat-footed in addition to the effects of the minor curse."
Seems like the main draw of the Oracle Dedication is "Mysterious Breadth" which grants you some extra spell slots.
I recently posted about this on reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Pathfinder2e/comments/jbyrp9/oracle_multiclass_dedication_and_cursebound/
The dedication feat gives you mild effects, but not any other effects from the curse. To cast a cursebound spell you have to have a curse, it's in the trait; but the dediction itself states that other than the mild flavor, you don't get other effects. Right now, it seems that you must take First Revelation if you want to cast any cursebound spells. I hope there is an errata.
Been playing a Cosmos Oracle. Me and my bulk weighing half and someone needing to carry me has has actually come up a few times.
Going back and rewatching this after i just watched your kineticist video... not so complicated anymore is it?? 🤣
turns out you don't count as your own "ally" ...so battle oracle's "call to arms" doesn't affect yourself.
I was told there would be punch and pie.
You were lied to
My first ever 1e character was a Metal Mystery Half Orc Oracle and I'm super hoping Metal Mystery makes a return. Tho I'm not sure what the curse would consist of.
Ha! Fighters: We even make Oracle subclasses awesome!
Commenting for the algorithm!
This is as difficult as remembering that you chose to make tindertwigs as an alchemist
Goard leshi Oracle with warfare mystery
A haunted Jack O' lantern wielding a scythe
All I can think of when people talk about Goard Leshies is "Over the Garden Wall" episode 2 lol.
I'll make an oracle now ty.
❤
the strongest focus spell you've seen... is melee demoralize with a tiny bit of damage? I'm not impressed lol
Okay, Orc Barbarian with the Battle Oracle Archetype.
That last one reminds me of Biotics from Mass Effect.

the bone oricle could take the sentinel archetype :)
This thursday im playing in a game and im playing as a cosmos oracle poppet who is in a cult
_Call upon meeeeeeee~~~ Call upon your Fighter Class~~~_
....I think I'm just going to try a cleric 1st 😵💫😢
Interesting...
The whole way curses are handled through is amazing, and I think if my two other issues were fixed in the future then Oracle would go back to being my favorite class again.
woo Oracles!
ancestral form reminds me of gaseous form

here's a comment for the algorithm, 2 years late :D
The whole drawback that you can’t mitigate in any way, bugs the munchkin part of my brain. One combo I found interesting though was combining Dragon Barbarian with Flame Oracle. I initially thought of the idea because I thought the temp hp could help soak up the damage and then as I was looking into it I realized that fire rage damage combo’d well with incendiary aura. As for ancestries there is of course dragonborn, or perhaps elemental heart dwarf, or if you really want to go all in with the pyromania there is torch goblin.

You said howdy and I hit the like button. Then I realized it was Oracle and down voted it. Then I felt bad and reuped you.
Obligatory comment because I laughed at your plant jokes on the leshy video...
