With the release of House of the Dragon on HBO Max, Game of Thrones is back! Dragons fly again, in the prequel story about when House Targaryen ruled the land of Westeros. However, Davis is still feeling hurt after the end of Game of Thrones Season 8, and isn’t as interested to watch. But his inner fanboy won’t give up without a fight. As someone who read Fire and Blood some years ago, HoTD has actually managed to surprise me with several plot lines and characterizations 🤷🏽♀️
It’s actually really cleverly done. If you hadn’t read the books, you’re going to get surprised by everything that happens. But if you have read the books, you’re going to still be surprised, because it doesn’t depict what was written as having happened - rather, it depicts how things “really” played out.

I’m gonna be honest, I know how the timeline plays out and I just don’t feel like getting invested in a bunch of characters who are almost all going to die horribly for no good reason other than the Targaryen bloodline has to be thinned out to a trickle.
After the despicable end of GoT, I originally had decided not to watch HoT, simply to not spoil the good read that I had with Fire and Blood. After a surprisingly positive review I then did decide to give it a watch and was extremely happy.
Honestly think, that in many aspects, this show actually managed to improve the story. At least one can not deny that they honestly tried and that it is a worthy add to the "franchise".

I'm not a Game of Thrones fan, but I decided to try House of the Dragon, and I've enjoyed it so far. Matt Smith is definitely the best part.

During the reign of King Bran the Broken, he creates the first ever articles of war.
Bran’s son and heir, King Robb II Stark, claims that dragons and magic are too powerful in the hands of men and declares that only Earthly materials can be handled by men, by law.
*500 years later*
The Six Kingdoms are a distant memory, Republics, dictatorships and Anarchist states litter Westeros.
Hoping to gain a new advantage in siege warfare, the Northmen have created flying machines.
A shortage of lumber forces the Ironborn to switch to coal-powered steel battleships.
The Dornish have discovered abundant amounts of flammable liquid beneath their deserts and created machines powered by the liquid.
The Reach needed faster transportation for their livestock so they created steam-powered transportation machines that slide along specially laid tracks and others that can go wherever there’s a road.
The Riverlands needed a military advantage so they created spears with explosives on the tips. Now, at the flip of a trigger switch, a projectile comes flying from the “Boomstick” that tears the enemy a shreds.
Finally, King’s Landing needed better communications with other cities, so it laid wires traveling for miles that can be used to transmit messages in minutes.
Me too, game of thrones was too much of a commitment by the time I was interested, House of the dragon has really sucked me in to the world

There's way more to a story than "wanting to be surprised" and the whole "I know how it ends" thing never seemed like a fair criticism for me, certainly not enough to drop a piece of media that's otherwise good.
Agreed plus it’s like 100 years ago so they basically could do all kinds of things
I've loved most prequels that I've watched/read/played. The "we already know how it ends" aspect of them has never really lessened my enjoyment.
Man the fact that I know what happens is exactly why I jumped at HoTD, the dance of the dragons and the blackfyre rebellions are the 2 civil wars in ASOIAF history I most wanted to see play out on screen. I have not been disappointed fucking loving it
I am tired of prequels for that reason though. The writers are limited in how the story eventually goes, because we all know what happens.
Star wars prequels was fine, but then somehow, everyone thought they needed to do it too.
Nah, you already know what's going to happen, you how things are going to end up. Sure you can make up some details, but in the end it's just that, details. Prequels are only welconed when there's a dark spot, some unknown event in the past that is essential to understand current events.

I remember after S8 some people were hyped about the prospect of prequels in the works and I was not with them at all. I had lost all interest in all things GoT after that dumpster fire of an ending. House of the Dragon came out and I didn't even bat an eye. Then I watched Knights Watch reviews of the episodes on UA-cam and thought it sounded good enough to check out. So far, it is honestly so much better than S6 and 7, let alone S8. It is not early GoT good, but it is easily better than most of the garbage that comes out today by orders of magnitudes. I did not expect to be so happy about GoT's return, but I am.

I was with you up until 3:42. After that and all I would say is that you've underestimated my hatred for season 8 and everyone who had anything to do with the choices that were made (which includes the network.) I'd rather be irrelevant than give them another moment of my time.
After watching Episode 1/pilot I've decided to not watch House of the Dragon further because the actors behave like they're affected with Down's Syndrom & my (life-)time feels too precious for wasting it this way; so I've started rewatching THE Game of Thrones again (inclusive S8).
Here’s the difference between Seasons 6-8 of GoT and HoTD. D&D ran out of books and thus had to write whole new original material. HoTS doesn’t have D&D being involved and has an actual clear ending. All they need to do is follow the book

No Man don't fall for it. even if it's better it's still ultimately leading up to the disappointing crash and burn of an ending season 8 was, this spin off won't erase it. Besides you don't need to worry about relevance by skipping it. The most popular show right now is Yellowstone not this.

Before making House of Dragon, they should have atleast remade the botchrd season 8 finale. That would have made the any upcoming prequels or sequals will give more confidence to the viewers...
