Baitfish are criminally underrated for eating, especially anchovies. I've been told that for jacksmelt, the black stomach lining makes it taste bitter and scraping it off should make it better
You mean an extra little snack in there?! Hahaha like LBSF Guides said, they're usually harmless as long as you prepare them correctly. But I never really run across that many fish with parasites. However Zebra Perch will almost always have one of those tongue eating parasites in their mouth. Its crazy looking lol
Perch Jerker!!! Awesome video!!!! Glad to see you eating jack smelt. Every time I clean the smelt, I usually get these long worms coming out of their flesh. Not sure if that's even safe to eat. Glad to hear and see that the smelt is yummy. I'd survive to try the anchovies one day. Thank you for sharing and posting. You're a Crazy Man for eating the smelt. But thats what makes you Awesome!!!! You the Man!!!!
Totally enjoy your videos dude. I grew up in the OC in a time long past. Went into the Air Force outta high school. I don't back often but really like seeing my old fishing grounds. Didn't hit Huntington often usual hit Seal, Newport, Balboa or the rocks. Rock on bro....
Yesterday I couldn’t catch a decent sized baitfish at H.B pier, so I threw two jacksmelt, hooked em’ through the head and caught a 20” Hali in 14 seconds, try two!!!!
I fish there saturday in the eving at that pier cool ass pier but way to high up tho lol loo but nice I fish late at night next to the bathrooms at night and got my pole bent and my drag was going fast bleave it was a big lepard tho I use a fish finder rig 8/0 circle hooks and I screwed up and didn't get it quick enough but parking is costly 16 dollars lol one DAT I'll run into you there I watch your UA-cam channel quit a bit cool tho
Those snails in the hoop net are Kellet’s Whelks. They have no size limit and a bag limit of 35. They are actually very good eating and are very valuable in the commercial market.
I WAS SEARCHING FOR THIS COMMENT! You're the VIP lol so how do I prepare them? Pull them out and eat the whole thing? Or do I have to remove certain parts? I'll research more, but I'd love your opinion.
@@theperchjerker Clean them off, then boil them for about 15 minutes. Afterwards, use a skewer to pull them out of their shell. If you’re interested, the website for the Dory Fish Market in Newport Beach has a few recipes for these whelks because they sell them.
@@theperchjerker they get way bigger than what you pulled up, also these are one of the few snails that has an open and closed season. Their season is July 1st to the first Wednesday after march 15, if you are curious to try snails you should go tide pooling, also I believe to catch them legally you have to do it by hand or by hook only, no nets or snares or anything.
I’ve never eaten either, but I like canned sardines. I eat whole just legal size fried fresh water fish ( skinned). And I don’t know what call little salt water catfish there or if y’all even have them. In Texas we call them hardheads, but almost everyone considers them trash fish because they are really slimy. I throw them on ice water over night. Wipe them down, skin, defin and angle cut the bloodline out and fry them whole and they’re great. Great vid 👍

Dude can you make another surf fishing video for perch? I tried going yesterday i was by tower 19 and didnt catch shiet! Idk what i was doing wrong or maybe it was the wrong area
Last time I was at hb was Saturday night and I put live smelt out like 4 times and each time I kept catch huge skates I don’t know why but they just choked it and wouldn’t touch mackerel at all but total I caught 10 skates 4 on smelt and 6 on squid
Well said. That's exactly how I feel lol. There's only a few fish that stand out significantly to me than others... Thresher Shark, Halibut and Mahi Mahi. Lol now I'm hungry.
So kinda new to fishing. Bought the ugly stik medium/heavy 10’ rod and reel combo from Walmart. Gunna be fishing off the pier in hb and balboa. Is that to big?? I saw a 7’ medium/heavy GX2 ugly stik combo I might just go get and return the 10’. What do you think I should do? Thanks buddy!
UA-cam is slowly starting to accept The Perch Jerker! Lol I'm trying to reach 10,000 subscribers. I hope to look back on this comment one day see that as a small sub number. Lol we got this!
Nice job dude I’ve never done that but it’ll be on my mind next time out I’m sure it’s better to eat them off the pier like you rather than from inside the harbor where I catch them lol
I finally figured out how you position your gopro. At first i thought it was custom. It's a magnetic clip right? Sick video 🔥🔥 I like how you fish with your viewers. Let us know how those snails taste.
No need to transform into iron man Travis! Hahaha trust me, strap and a hole... You're on your way to success hahaha. Thanks for watching bro beans. Keep those shark bangers coming over there in Texas! You're killin it!
What’s up Perch! Yeah man everyone has an opinion ( usually bad ) about smelt! Honestly that’s the first salt water fish that my Dad and I brought home to cook when I was about 8. I always thought it tasted fine . I’ve noticed some have more slimy fat than others and some have very dark veins in the meat. That’s probably what scares everyone but with so many other game fish to choose from it’s not a option unless it’s a survival situation. Also I’ve seen everything from Pelicans, Dolphins, Halibut, and other predators target Jack Smelt so you already know I’m of fan of it as bait! Glad you were down to try it…if the grocery store ever depletes we know we have an endless food source 🤙🏼 That was cool to see Luke trying the halibut rig, did he get anything?
No halibut this day that I saw, I'm sure at least someone got one that day. The smelt were everywhere... Lol but yeah jack smelt is the most under rated fish out there! I'm a firm believer now.

There are no salt water catfish in SoCal. However, there are reports of channel and blue catfish swimming into saltwater in San Francisco Bay.
Imagine being in the bay and pulling out a cat fish! Hahaha that would be epic.
