Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. They were a late 80’s, early 90’s band that came to S. Cal. every year. Your recipe for mackerel sounds delicious. I definitely will be trying your recipe. I wonder if it will work on Bonito?
I just went to that Pier, right where you were fishing, couldn't get a nibble, nobody caught smelt, it might be too cold already, I hope Huntington Beach Pier, still has some time left.
That's Newport Pier... Bad ass fishing pier 🎣💯 Balboa Pier is the next pier over to the South... in Balboa. If you throw a whole filet of fresh mackeral on the right corner with a big weight you can get something good on your new Daiwa.
Man, I grew up fishing at Newport pier all through the 90’s up until around 2005 was the last time I fished there. I still walk down to the pier to see what they’re catching. It’s kinda sad to see that it’s usually all mackerel despite the nice chart at the beginning of the pier with all the species of fish that used to be there. In the 90s we caught corvina, perch, croaker, and halibut. The bait to use for those was sandstorms they were. $20 dollars for 10 at Grant’s (gunstore). 0:05 Mackerel, we’d catch 3, 4 at a time with the sabiki, bringing home a bucket full of mackerel, and that was a bad day of fishing at McFadden Pier. Anyways, I enjoyed your video. You are a brave man. The only non-Asian I’ve seen eating mackerel like that. Thanks. I'm visiting Newport Beach again, but forgot to bring my rod. Best thing in California is that no license is needed to fish a public pier and free entry. Downside is that there is little free parking, so might pay >$20/day. Most I've been on about all you see caught are long thin mackerel, like here. They have a dry meat like tuna, which many people like (not me). The Newport Pier is said to be one of the best since a tongue of deep water is just offshore, so said to produce a wide variety of fish. Probably the worst pier is Oceanside, between Newport and San Diego. Even the sign says they found after building it ~1920 that it was placed in a "dead sea" almost void of fish. If you've ever fished Florida piers or the Gulf Coast, you will find California fishing much less interesting.
