    Wireless charging has a lot of uses.
    • If your charging port goes bad. (I've seen this happen)
    • You have a bunch of cables like me that all say use original charger cable and trickle charges your phone
    • A good wireless charger will charge both android as well as IPhone so you can charge everyone's phone who comes to your house.
    • Charging your phone at night in the dark and fumbling for your charger and plugging it in right is a thing of the past
    • There are plenty of other advantages and I'm sure there will be many disadvantages too. I think this was a great idea, and was never supposed to be life changing. Just a better way to charge your phone at home.

      Matt Ferrigno this is spot on!
      Some chargers work great, others not so good. I have one that has quick charge capability and I have an 18W charging cube for it. Which makes it perfect!

      This is exactly what I was going to say. For a science channel, I'm sure he has to understand what friction does to the contact pads by using a charging cable. If anyone is like me and prefers not to spend $900+ (last phone was $1200) every year or two - then you'll look for ways of prolonging the life of it.
      There's also the convenience aspect of it. Just sit the device down on the pad (for me, in any orientation) and bam.. it charges. It takes seconds compared to tens of seconds of time (science efficiency, undervalued?).
      And like you also mentioned, one wireless pad for a multitude of devices. I have an Xbox controller, Apple TV (Siri) remote, two iPhones, and some other hacked together electronics (Raspberry Pi) that all charge with the exact same pad. I count three different types of connectors there.
      I guess in the science world, if something is stupid simple then it has no use case.

    FINALLY, someone else that has realized how inefficient wireless charging is.
    I do electrical design for commercial buildings & I'm surprised the energy code hasn't ban them all together.
    20% is HORRIBLE.
    I was using 50% or a little under 50% efficient. Just based on the wireless battery packs seem to charge about. 1/2 as much if you use the wireless charging vs the corded charging. (That's very rough. I only looked @ 1 and how many times it would charge a phone if full. Using each.)
    The energy to make the worn out wires / broken charging ports, could be factored in though.

    A very good reason for wireless charging is it saves the mini port. These little ports wear out mostly from abuse, but never the less they are usually bad before the phone. They will probably out last the phone with wireless charging.

    Yeah they never made much sense to me either. 50% efficiency if they're any good and you can't even move the phone from its designated topping up spot. Hardly even charging, because you don't get a ton of current in these things, as the receiver coil would invariably sit right flat against the battery, and you don't want to bake the battery.
    I like magnetic cables though. Near lossless in comparison and super convenient, and you can get them for like $2 a piece. Great protection against breaking the socket for clumsy individuals too.

      My phones socket is worn so it's easier to use a wireless charger than trying to find the sweet spot where it will actually cable charge. Also got a wireless charger in my card ( as part of the phone cradle ). It's nice to drop the phone in and not have to plug/unplug a cable each time

      Magnetic cable suck what we really need is little holes on the back of the phone that when you set it on the charger there are tiny pins that stick into those holes that charge the phone preferably make everything as flat as possible then for example you can walk up to your computer set it on top of your computer case and it would make that noise that computers make when you plug in USB cable to your phone

    I am not an engineer and I have not tried it practically but if I'd to say it's the frequency, at lower frequency of little Hz or few 100khz or even 1 or 2 MHz eddy loss is abundant. So may be 5 or 6 MHz or more needed to be supplied after all most commercial devices uses of 6 or 7 MHz. I happen to look one in a product and wondered why it was so high but never gave a thought before this.

    I have a wireless headset, but I'm often using it in wired mode since I keep forgetting to plug it in after using it. I just put it back on the stand. It also regularly happens that I forget to turn it off, and when I want to use it the next day it won't turn on.. Therefore I wanted to set up a wireless charging system so I don't have to bother plugging it in.
    Wireless chargers are great for that reason. For instance, if you get in your car and you put your phone in the phone holder to use it as navigation it's annoying to find the charging cable and plug it in if you remember to plug it in in the first place. Usually I'm driving and I suddenly get a notification that the battery is at 15%, and it's dangerous to plug it in while driving. Wireless charging would completely solve that issue.

    everyone I know who uses wireless charging uses it because they move their cables around too much if it's plugged into the phone and ruins the cables, the connector, and quite often the port itself. Have you never battled with having to have the cable in at JUST the right angle, otherwise it doesn't connect, requiring you to rig all sorts of devices to keep the cable pushed in at the correct angle or wrapping the cable around the phone to create tension? Not a problem with wireless charging.

    DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU'RE NOT EXPERIENCED.
    New wireless chargers have smart object detection, unlike this.
    Doing this:
    1. Any coin or metal placed on your pad can cause FIRE.
    2. Your pad will ALWAYS draw power = BIG electricity bill.

      Good question. The problem is that I have reached the maximum wattage of the system, that is why the voltage dropped from 5V to 3.5V. It's because the source refuses to push any more current than 100mA so it clamps the voltage inside the source. If the output voltage were higher (i.e. 2:1 for 10V), it will still max out the current and clamp the voltage again at 3.5V.

    well I guess it's just basically a transformer in essence, expect __actual__ wireless charging is a transformer plus a whole communication interface with it's own protocol and all that it entails.. preamble bits, packets, detection methods(i.e. not just burning whatever is put on the transmitter) and checksums, modulation techniques....
    anyhow, still a good video =)

    Why use microwave transformer ,.. the problem is your oscilloscope cant deliver much power at 100ma so instead of using microware transformer use transistor to amplify the current with the same resonant frequency in short use the oscilloscope as oscillator and the transistor to provide additional power and it will drive your coil with enough current to power your phone.

      Between you and I, (judge me if you wish) I was leaving town for the holidays and that was also my final exam week. I was tight on time and couldn't design a proper amplifier - its not as easy as you might think at so high of a frequency.

    Reasons:
    A) The connection on the device to be charged is broken.
    B) Build the charging pad into the coffee table.
    C) I don't trust strange USB ports, I enjoy the protection of wireless coupling.

    In my case wireless charging has been very useful. Solely because the charging port on my phone broke and the only way I can charge it now it's wirelessly and it has kept me from buying a new phone.

    Pal, dunno if this was said before but to calculate transformer efficiency you need to account for the voltage and current phase angle, ie Pin = IVcos(theta) where theta is the angle difference between voltage and current assuming the circuit is inductive, ie lagging Power Factor aka cos(theta). The same needs to be done for the output as well. Then you can calculate efficiency. Great video btw. Keep up the good work and merry xmas.

      If I'm remembering correctly, using RMS (root mean square) values means that we can use P=V_RMS*I_RMS. Assuming the same voltage on each coil, the ratio of power the same as ratio of the currents. If we felt like using peak voltage methods, all that is out the window and we would need to do what you said.

    Wireless should be as simple as a charging cradle, with actual contacts for charging, neodyms to pull it into correct position.. Instead of the flimsy charging ports that are ubiquitous on all the devices out there...

    I’m currently building a wireless charger in a car that can plug into the cigarette lighter.
    Boosting the voltage to 24 v and running a circuit that is 1amp draw

    Is Kanthal, possibly AWG, wire conductive? I've got 20 gauge all the way down to 32 or 34. I know to most this is a "stupid question" & I believe I know the answer that it is, indeed conductive. Just thought I'd ask the crowd. Answers? Comments? I'm new to any kind of electronics. Pls be kind.

    WAIT! ....Now teach us how build a wireless power supply that feeds off of outside high voltage power lines so we can wireless charge our drones. MIT wont release any of their information on their project. And the guys that hang cameras from power lines wont either....You are my last hope. GO!

      For one thing, MIT is over-hyped.
      For another, it's not difficult to pull power away from high voltage lines with a coil of wire. There are stories of farmers putting spools of wire on their property so they can steal power.
      As, per drones... I don't imagine that the range would be very good being inductively or capacitively coupled to a low frequency source such as the power lines.

    Your efficiency calculation of your MOT setup was wrong.
    Firstly, since your coupling between primary and secondary was surely pretty bad for an iron core transformer, the output voltage is not going to be the same as the input voltage.
    Secondly, some of that primary current is going to be just reactive power, meaning it doesn´t count as a loss.

    Actually, no, you did not.
    There's lots of reasons for qi wireless charging:
    1) wireless charging is safer. Wall chargers can malfunction, and destroy the power circuit in your phone.
    2) wireless charging is more reliable. I have 3 phones where the wired charging jack has broken.
    3) wireless charging can be as fast or faster - both my iphone and android charge faster with qi.
    4) wireless charging is more convenient. I don't have to look for the cord, I just set it on its stand.
    As for your "demo," starting with a source of only 100 mA is not going to charge a phone, typically, even if it were 100% efficient.

      Maximum power transfer occurs at the resonant frequency. As you stray away from it power drops. Power output looks like a bell curve where the horizontal axis is frequency.
      A good example of resonance is pushing somebody on a swing set. The best time to push them is right at the peak of their swing. Push them before *or* after that sweet spot, and some energy is lost.

      Are you familiar with Faraday cages? A sheet of conductive material doesn't allow an electric field through, protecting what on the other side. Likewise, a magnetic Faraday cage can exist where a sheet of magnetic material doesn't allow magnetic fields through.
      Phone chargers have a ferrous plate behind them so that the magnetic fields don't pass through and affect the electronics.

    How many V are you putting into your "transformer"?

      OFF-Grid HillBilly Style I assume you mean the small coil. That was theoretically 10 volts, but since the frequency generator can only supply less than 100 milliamperes, the voltage dropped into the low single digits; not sure beyond that.

      I measured the current in and the current out and compared the two against the theoretical value using the efficiency equation: efficiency = (measured - theoretical) / theoretical
