Well, that ship sailed about 30 years ago and it’s so sad. I just called the third episode that Timothy Dalton was going to do as he episode of missed opportunity.

He’s earned better fanfare with the popularity of Daniel Craig, who based much of his approach on Dalton’s performance.

Nah these days he's got a cult following and is beloved by that cult. In 1987 people just weren't ready for him. They were so used to Roger dressing up as a clown and shining from a vine with the tarzan sound effect... That a serious Bond was wrongly interpreted as bad acting. Dalton would of been better to start with On her majesty secert service.

They wanted Dalton for Goldeneye, but his contact had expired. Broccoli would only renew his contract if he committed to three or four more films. Dalton didn't want to do more, he just wanted to do Goldeneye and stop. So he didn't sign the new contract.

Living Daylights was written with Brosnan in mind BUT Licence To Kill is totally Dalton's, two completely different movie's. Dalton knew he was being compared to Brosnan back then that's why he resigned while making Scarlett in '93. Then Brosnan came in with Goldeneye in 95

For me the only two Bonds that matter are Timothy Dalton and Daniel Craig. The world in 1987 was not ready for Dalton who in my view did a superb job as Bond as his depiction was close to the character in the Novels. Dalton a stage actor had much more depth than Connery, Moore and the soulless, wooden Brosnan. Unfortunately the producers still were going in the absurd direction of parody that Began to infect the Bond Movies that started as early as Goldfinger. While Goldfinger was entertaining and Connery was charming, you began to get that feeling of staleness and comic book like vibe that began to carry the Bond movies over into absolute silliness. And the Roger Moore era went full blown parody to the point that they were at least to me cringe worthy to witness. Brosnan had absolutely zero passion and believability especially with that one expression he always wore, delivering his lines with zero conviction. And his slight, almost skinny dad bod definitely did him no favors. Dalton SHOULD have been the one to do at least 3 of the Brosnan Bonds and I’m quite sure that he would have brought the real goods and raise the standards of those films considerably. Unfortunately that didn’t happen. But thankfully Barbara Brocolli came to her senses and realized after Brosnan whose last film bombed, a fresh perspective was definitely needed in a dying franchise that was fast becoming irrelevant in the emerging era Of The Bourne Supremacy etc…..Audiences tastes had changed, it was a new generation of movie goers who wanted serious depictions with intelligent themes, not the silliness of the previous Bonds that were pure Hollywood schlock. And in came Daniel Craig who single handily brought Bond back into relevance and the 21st century in a BIG WAY. Craig built off of what Dalton started and took it to unprecedented levels thanks in large part to his excellent talent, daring directors and adhering to how the character is in the novels. Like Dalton Craig was a very talented stage actor who brought incredible depth to Bond and his physicality and physique and ruggedness made it very believable that he was a top tier killer. Craig significantly raised the bar and hopefully the trend continues with his successor.

I am 40 years old.. and for me, when James Bond is mentioned, the first association is immediately Timothy Dalton! Nor Connery with all due respect.. . neither the timid and comedic Roger nor the totally unwatchable Craig nor Brosnan... but Dalton.. the only regret and I say this as someone who normally deals with films and who grew up with Bond films is that Lazenby didn't get another film and that Dalton didn't go with a View to Kill and that Goldeneye is his final Bond! And all the rest are poor copies of Bond...
