WATCH: bit.ly/3YjLPbT In our exclusive interview, Richie talks about his Flying V Custom, live gear, recovery from his recent health scare and how he nearly missed the call to join Judas Priest!
I just bought a Gibson SG 61 standard reissue... What a great great guitar, what an absolute beauty.... Thank you Gibson!!! The pick up guard is much nicer than the Batman logo pick up guard on the Standard... I really prefer this one ❤
Gibson, if you could get Tony and Angus Young together to talk about the SG, I would be QUITE happy.
Jamie Bruner and maybe can be because both are friends!
Jamie Bruner that would be next level
Good luck getting Angus to appear in anything unrelated to ACDC!
Seriously, I'd absolutely LOVE to see something like that, though....
@@mycubiclepenguin868 Did you ever see the clip where Angus introduces Ozzy at some music awards.
Quite nervous, was the bonnie wee lad
Uff!
Toni Iommi is still one of the greatest guitarist of all time
Sam Anderson he is the original Riff Master of Metal !!! Absolute Legend
@@MetalMayhem1978 Ultimate Riff Lord!!!
The Riffmeister general
Read his autobiography for some kind of insight.. nothing. All very quaint like this interview. "Oh I liked the Shadows and played blues.." and then all the technical side.. then out of nowhere the most radically different and dark and sinister guitar music of that time. Yeeeea, he's not really telling us everything that was going on
What's up with riff master? He was/is a master of soloing hes good in the studio but Live he's something else.. truly genius
Tony Iommi has a real natural coolness. Ozzy said about him, "When he got diagnosed with cancer, he just dealt with it. That's him. I'm going [imitates crying sound], and he's, like, 'Whatever I have to do.' He's like that. He's always been like that. Very calm."
The Riff Master feels no pain!
How else does one deal with cancer?
Iron man
He's so stoic compared to Ozzy.
Cancer has shit on Iron
Tony is 72 and his mind is still sharp. The proof that playing Guitar helps your brain
*GibsonTM ;)

Tony is such a relaxed modest guy who created the best riffs of all time.
The Review Channel Exactly, well put.
Pingu Wetone what?
Black Sabbath - They wasted so many riffs in each song!
In all honesty, Tony Iommi may be the most influential guitarist alive today. He basically created/inspired a totally new genre of music. Hendrix and EVH transformed the way people play the guitar but Iommi's legacy is just as important.
Agreed sir
not just style wise either - he has spawned innovations in Gear as well.... - Imagine if he(or Picarto) could have gotten Royalties on light gauge strings........
Very true. IOMMI IS THE MAN
When KK retired, I thought it was the end of Priest. Richie, however, proved to be a fine replacement. He has the chops, the look and the vibe to be in that band. Tony is just pure class and pure metal. The King.
It's a shame Ritchie can't afford a pair of real pants....... You would think a big band like that would pay better....... 😂
Nope! KK did not retire, and prove that KK is now on tour playing at almost all music venues in north America by the name of his new band KK's Priest!
Also as a loyal fan of Tony Iommi this video is fucking bullshit for the reason that there is not video being posted with Tony chatting with the real metal gods of Judas Priest KK Downing or Glenn Tipton???
Give me a fucking break!
Man are people on this page air-headed and stupid!
It's a new era for Judas Priest.
The Innovator, not the Imitator, Tony has certainly made history. not just a musician, but has a humble and gracious human being. Thank you, Mr. Iommi...
You know whats interesting is he drop tuned his guitar to C# because standard tuning was hard on his fingers, and by doing so ended up creating a new dynamic sound that ultimately became heavy metal.
Tony shook Faulkner's hand with both of his hands...a sign of humility and at the same time appeared like he imparted some of his magical guitar ingenuity into him.
I have been a Tony Iommi fan ever since...
People can split hairs and debate who and when and hey, I see the arguments and the similarities but the fact remains .......
When Black Sabbath walked into the recording studio history was made and recorded (literally) and released to the public. And for the first time you could put your finger on it. It was there. Right there. And you knew it. And we still know it today.
Forever......
Iommi + Gibson = Timeless music
Can't forget a thicc Laney
Don't forget "JayDee", John Diggins, his luthier, he created his legendary custom SG, "burned" looking, Toni loved it and played it for many years live and in studio
G. Chris well if wasn’t for the pickup on the Stratocaster kicking the bucket it would be today “Iommi + Fender = Timeless music”
he started on a Strat.

I was working with a painting crew and they were painting the inside of this huge white church and one of the painters was blasting out "Hells Bells "by AC/DC and it sounded fantastic echoing off the inside walls of that place!Good thing they didn't play any Sabbath apparently but I would have liked it !🤘

Thumbs up for Richie Faulkner! Great job here! Enjoyed every minute of it.
I'll say it again, I really think Sabbath's story could make one fantastic movie.
rbkahuna yes!!!
What would the story arc be based around and what would be the ending?
@@lmjones7716 I think I would keep it about the early days. Tony's fingers, finding their audience, coming up with the spooky music idea which basically helped invent metal. especially show how shabby the critics reaction was and then jump ahead to end with hall of fame induction. Otherwise it could really easy turn into a movie just about Ozzy. Might save that for the sequel. LOL
Thatd be dumb
Roland Vigil well i guess it’s good thing no one said you had to watch it, right?
Richie is a great interviewer. This is awesome.
I could listen to Mr. Iommi all day long.
You think of guitarists and their riffs and you can maybe think of 8 or ten maybe that define them. With Tony Iommi you could probably go 30 and counting. Truly the most Iconic guitarist of all time and thankfully lived through it these last 50 years. All Hail the King!
Ashley Coates well put mate
Jimmy page lol
@@AC-sd6fo Jimmy certainly the man in a live setting. No one comes close. But most of early Zep stuff was let’s say his interpretation of other songs, hence the lawsuits or co-wrote... But you can’t deny his genius...And he did have the more talented JPJ in there as well...
@@AC-sd6fo I totally agree. Those guys can def go punch for punch but in terms of riffage, it goes to Tony. Page takes pretty much everything else

Tony Iommi is an absolute hero of mine
The Heaven and Hell album is what really closed the deal for me. Tony's riffs are truly unique.
It's cool how when he describes Geezer bending the strings , he demonstrates with his left hand , as the fretting hand , bending the strings , as a right handed person would play .
great eye
I remember seeing a clip of Paul McCartney handed an upright bass strung for a right-handed player and still asked to play. He didn't hesitate but played it perfectly. I think many who saw it didn't realise what was happening. But I saw the strings being strung right-handed. I thought it was interesting. He made the adjustments like a true pro. Tony I believe could do the same if he had to. He did say he played right-handed for a bit.
@@Nordicroo would be a pain in the ass even if youre a pro lol
kiko loureiro/steve morse/dave hill are southpaws who play right.
...that's a spot on observation.
tony lommie is just great and so is gibson . Black Sabbath is the best
Only one musician/writer ever impacted me enough to change the direction of my life for the last 40+ years. Tony Iommi.
First Heavy Metal guitarist😎🎸🤘🏻
For me, heavy metal was born with the first Sabbath album, so it turned 50 this Feb \m/
I have heard this story so many times, but I just love to hear it again and again and again. I love Black Sabbath and I love Tony Iommi
Saw Iommi with Sabbath on the 13 tour.
Not only was the show fantastic, but Tony was absolutely on fire that night, playing through a giant wall of Laneys.
As someone who's ripped off and idolized Mr. Iommi, he was at 200% that night and took a bunch of solos to the next level.
A true original, icon, and gentleman.
Just a shame bill ward wasn't there🙁
I saw Sabbath in the same tour. Best show of my life, and i ve seen many shows! Tony was brutal that night.
I saw them on the 13 tour as well. Probably the best show I’ve ever seen. The only show close was Metallica in 1998. I’ve seen both bands 3x and those 2 shows were just above and beyond.
Saw them at the O2, London on that tour. They turned up with their A-game and absolutely killed it on every single song. Fantastic resurgence and amazing gig
Tony's laughing is such a giveaway for his evil sense of humor...lol Great interview and Richie asked all the proper questions getting Tony to talk on some things we haven't heard before. Good job guys!
Karen DiZefalo
Nice to see an interview where he was quite relaxed and occasionally being himself laughing out loud, he's such a humble guy for all what he's achieved. I know what you mean about the laugh, off camera I bet he'd be a great guy to have a beer with.
@@pleasepermitmetospeakohgre1504 Totally agree. I've been lucky enough to meet him. Tony is a great guy,... he's super caring and kind and has a great sense of humor.
The way he laughed when he said the church burnt down😂
Hard to imagine such a calm and humble guy in a band with Ozzy.
What a humble and respectful gentleman Richie is. THIS is how an interview is done.
honestly you cant find better man for do this interview than ritchie, the interview was brilliant!
The blowing out the candles story was hilarious.
Loved it,
I was there when Rob Halford stepped in for Ozzy at the last minute. Amazing how many people booed and left the venue. To me it was metal heaven.
It was an amazing evening!
Rob didn't have much time to learn and rehearse those songs, so some of it was pretty rough.
Ive been playing guitar 30 plus years tony been such an inspiration. Early on i ran a drill bit through a finger. Unbeleivable he could play with no feeling on his fingers. Mine somewhat healed but even now years later sometimes when i bend a note it hits the spot and trust me it sends you to your knees. What an accomplishment no feeling and the ability to persevere all these years dealing with that pain and playing through it when it hit is incredible. I was so conscious of it or scared of it i quite playing gigs. Seriously at times more painful than hitting your finger with a hammer. Just wanted to say thanks tony i wouldnt be playing at all without your insperation
@@bobpugliese4428 You can see how it hurts him all the time. Or thats how i interpretd many of his facial expresions in every single live video i saw of him.
I was there at the Pacific Amphitheater. 2 nights. I disagree - everyone LOVED IT. It was cool and weird. They had 8 record contracts offered for Sabbath with Halford but he'd just signed a multi-album deal with Fight.
I could listen to iommi for hours
A metal guy interviewing a metal guy. Beyond cool, Gibson. It's not really an interview, it's a chit-chat. I dig it a lot. Keep it up, Gibson. If this is Mark's brainchild, bravo.
I could listen to Tony tell stories til the end of time!!!!!
Tony and Sabbath mean so much to me.
I wonder who owns that Iommi Strat now. It's probably worth millions. Thanks alot Gibson!
Great interview! So much better to have a real musician ask the questions.
Richie Faulkner definitely has a second career as an interviewer. He's a natural. Great chat between two great musicians.
Thanks for watching
This is already a great interview as the questions were asked from someone who has a clue. Plus we all could benefit from sitting under the learning tree of Iommi
Two of my most favorite guitarists together! Absolutely awesome 👏
What a great interview. Tony is a total legend and so humble. Ritchie is a phenomenal player in his own right but was obviously in total awe of Tony.
Let’s not forget he also did a great job interviewing! I would just be speechless. And then ask him nonstop questions about Eternal Idol and Headless Cross. Underrated albums.
Tony is the man that made me pick up a guitar at a young age and learn to play, always thankful to him for that, my mom not so much =-P
Black Sabbath was way ahead of time and my all-time favorite band!
My favorite live player is Tony. I saw him 7 times and took every opportunity to see him play that I could. He is just so good live. Too bad cancer has restricted his playing out these days, but at least he is still with us.
What a lovely humble guy Tony is absolute gent and Richie you're apart of that JP legacy and you 100% deserve it dude
Tony Iommi is God, I even named my son after him. Greatest heavy metal guitar player ever!
Tony is definitely the godfather of Metal but there is ONLY 1 GOD and that is Jimmy Page!
Iommi torres...yeah, it has a ring to it (".)
Amazing guitarist and artist... Yes... God- no!
Was supposed to see Sabbath on Easter 1982 in Phoenix Mob Rules tour. The churches got it changed to Monday. They said the colesium would collapse and kill everyone inside if the played that Easter. Great Great show
Sir Tony. Ludicrous that he hasn't been knighted. Bleeding Ludicrous!
This could have been 4 hours long and still held my interest.
What a pioneer of metal music Tommy Iommi is. So great that he stuck to his roots and his own style instead of copying others
Not a pioneer. The inventor.
Pioneers would be kinks, who, beatles, jimi hendrix, cream, blue cheer, led zeppelin and king crimson etc etc
Totally enjoyed this! Tony Iommi is the father of metal guitar...he reigns supreme! He developed a guitar sound all of his own! Absolute brilliance! Tony is the reason I bought an SG myself! Man what a great guitar!
Two of my favorite musicians. This is brilliant.
Whoever at Gibson decided to start producing more of this content deserves a raise. These are some of the highest quality interviews of guitar legends out there, surely they will be preserved and watched by many long after they're gone
And THAT’S how you interview a legend. Well done Ritchie.
Thanks so much for doing these videos with Tony. He and Geezer are the reason I play guitar today. Tony is a true living legend. Again, thanks Gibson.
I could listen to Tony tell stories all day, every day. Great interview!
I could listen to Tony talk all day long. Such a brilliant man. Thanks for everything over the year's Mr Iommi. \,,/ \,,/

One of my top five favorite guitar players of all time, Mr. Iommi! Great interview Ritchie.
I love listening to Tony Iommi, both playing guitar and talking. One of my mentors. Great interview.
This was fantastic! I had never heard the story about Tony selling the Strat to get a saxophone - wow! That's so crazy. Imagine if you just bought that in a pawn shop all those years ago!
Richie has truly proved his ability to supplant a legend like kk anyone can play the songs but to go and study the origins understand where and why this music evolves into the entity and understand the man who is undisputed in his creation of something meant originally to be no different than anyone else to play for a liviving also with Richie having access to the other band most responsible for the evolution and the men who were there and are considered Tony’s peers you understand the causality of the unrelenting drive to do this because they both were there played with each other but would not accept anything less than complete originality, complete artistic control, a vision that would be brought to fruition no matter the cost. A laser focus that made the world go away until they had to return to show the beautiful art that had been completed and to accept nothing less than a lifelong drive to never deviate from the original passion and mission statement but to never revisit the past and never ever stop evolving and creating til death stops it. Only Ritchie could do this interview because he has the respect of a metal progenitor who has no one before him. With that said the environment to attain the info from Tony himself is assured because tony feels comfortable and also respects Richie for his abilities his similar mindset and preferences and see a kindred spirit in Richie in a mentor yet mutual respect type of situation. This was an amazing interview. Thank you for this gem and a revelation of the elements that led to a genre that will never stop growing and branching out and has the loyalist fans and a legion of bands to form and do this for the same reasons. Tony iommi is the metal god.
Iommi = living legend
Brilliant. Imagine an album with these guys playing together 🤘👍
Nice score getting God to show up for an interview.
The Queen should knight him.
Sir Tony Iommi, Lord of This World.
"War Pigs" and "Fairies Wear Boots" each have more classic heavy riffs in one song than most bands have in their discography. He turned a physical limitation into the birth of a powerful musical genre. Tony Iommi is a true original.
The thought of Iommi playing with a string section excites me because I'm into symphonic metal. I'd love to hear him and Geezer create a horror movie soundtrack.
Tony Iommi is a genuinely nice guy ! I hope to get a signature epiphone one day . I have a black epiphone sg 400 standard now . if I can’t buy a signature , I’ll get his signature pickups!🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼
Phillip Pitts Assuming you’re going for his early sound, you’d probably be better off with p90s. He used them until heaven and hell I’m pretty sure, then he switched to humbuckers

Tony is looking and sounding well!!!
This is a wonderful interview! Ritchie is a class act and he gave a very professional interview. His questions were polite, not gushing (like I would be), and there’s a mutual respect between the guitarists. Of course Tony is always a gentleman, cool and calm, and his demeanor is nothing like what we’d expect of the legendary riff master. He is simply the best.
Great job to Gibson for making this happen. More, please!
Thank you for watching
Well, if Rob gets around playing the guitar, Ritchie could always go after a reporter interviewer type of work. Seems a bit refreshing hearing his questions esp. considering he is in that world and can reference other artists. I'm particularity glad he skipped the "fingers" question even though Iommy revisited the matter through the lens of having to relearn the guitar.
No shit. Ritchie conducted that interview and made it seem more like a discussion than a standard Q&A interview. Brilliant. Maybe a hidden talent, or gift? Would definitely like to see more.
