    In the final year of my PhD something clicked and the steps I needed to take became clearer. Academia in the end is just a game with rules and it helps to attach less to the outcome.

    Thank you for being a valuable resource for insight, strategies and tools for surviving the journey that is the PhD. Mine started around the time of the 2019 just as Covid was changing the world as we know it. I realized like many that this was my last chance to pursue those things I truly wanted. I started reviewing statistics and probability at the undergraduate level and worked my way to graduate work in Statistics and Computer Science (Masters level) with an emphasis on machine learning and AI. I was accepted to a PhD program at 59 just recently. I have much farther to go and the work is in information science and technology with an emphasis on data science and analytics. Classes start in January. I must admit to being intimidated but know that "Fear is the mind killer." Your "success thesis" is a great strategy to begin when meeting with professors and any future thesis advisor. Waiting to be told what to do is definitely not going to be a great strategy.

      Have a look into "computationally intensive theory construction". There is high demand for this type of methodology at the moment, and it would suit your interest in statistics and ML methods (I work in the same field).

    A PhD is not the same in the UK or Australia. I have to be TA which is time consuming. I also have to take classes. I am in USA but I was in the UK. My supervisor in the UK from a famous university told me that every body pass because students pay a lot of money. they do not have to publish for getting a degree and I met several students that got the PhD with no a very good thesis, but since it is famous university, they got a good job. In the UK is easy to get a PhD they do it in 3 years here in the USA 5 years.

    for the PHD, do I have to write a thesis necessarily?

    • @leandergihr9598
      @leandergihr9598 8 місяців тому +1

      No, there is a possibility to get a PhD by submitting papers, but you still need to to the writing. As an example, you need to do three publications around this topic and attend a conference as a speaker.
      But let me ask this another way around. What scientific value would your app add to the academia world?
      Designing an app to handle data for researchers makes their lifes easier, but does not add scientific value, you know what I mean?

      I can understand your position from the point of view of someone who did it "the old fashion way" and most probably put in more work than others.
      But from a general point of view, this enables the right people to spend more time on the creative part and include more information than ever and thus, be more scientific about the conclusion. I think this is a beautiful effect of technology in the future.
      But again, I can understand your point of view and respect that, I just wanted to give you a new perspective to think about. Have a great day mate!

    • @lizzi437

      @@leandergihr9598 I understand your perspective. You don't understand mine, because you don't know what this "someone" has or has not done. Generally, you, and others, simply overrate the process--and the result.
