My HS team was an extra in the movie Legendary with John Cena. Our heavyweight head-threw me probably 47 times that day all to not be in the big gym shot lol Wish that awful movie would've been on here.
Love seeing legendary Burroughs break down wrestling scenes in movies. Love the movie of Foxcatcher, as they actually had some professional freestyle wrestlers on the scene , like Reece Humphrey and JD Bergman. Just one thing abt the behind the neck pull ups tho, I’ve seen some Chinese professional Olympic weightlifters do those to get more stimulus on their back and rotator cuff muscles. I always think behind neck pull ups are stupid tho bc it greatly increases your risk of injuries for sure, prolly risks weigh more than benefits.
Oh...yeah, JB is just wrong on that one. I won't argue with him on Wrestling...for the most part. But yeah, the pull-ups behind your back, I absolutely did those to work on my traps, neck, shoulders. Then I'd do regular pullups to build up my lats, my arms, just more back and arms. JD by the way...hard headed MFer. Wrestled him a dozen times or so. I liked the dude...I really did, but I hated him on the mat(and I'm fairly sure he felt the same). There were times where we were just...GRINDING our foreheads into each other almost trying to just crush the other mans skull. Really nothing more than that and banging. I remember about 15 minutes after Wrestling him once he said something to me...and...my head was killing me. I used to get migraines and they come on slowly...so I would know one was coming and in an hour I'd be puking and done. So I got that match JUST in and I remember, I couldn't see, my head was killing me FROM the match and he came by, his head wrapped up(accidental headbut as we both shot) and he said something like, "dude, you got a hard fucking head...how does that shit never bother you." And I'm...just trying to hold the puke down sitting there and I looked up and just shrugged and said, "eh, just wrestling..." and I was so fucking glad he walked away because I just started puking RIGHT then and I couldn't open my eyes and I had to put ice on my head and neck(which I'm sure he later saw!)...but I played it off like, "oh nah, I'm good." And I was just in fucking AGONY. Tough dude...good dude. Would have been so much cooler if I'd won that one, but I did not.
The best wrestling moment on film for me is from Born on the Fourth of July. Oliver Stone, who I believe wrestled, at least in high school, dramatizes Cruise's Kovic getting pinned in a way that captures that feeling with an emotional intensity missing in any other wrestling depiction I have seen. Of course, Dolby Surround helps.
Obviously as former wrestlers and wrestling fans, we love to have someone of Burroughs' caliber to do one of these videos. It's amusing though how he muses at the prominence of big moves to the exclusion of other things such as hand fighting. For theater, and film and the storytelling from which the art forms derive their purpose, almost always contain an overbalance of the extraordinary compared to real life. That's the nature of it. It's what we call "action", and not just in the sense of an action movie, but rather the depiction of movement in camera or on stage. Sports films in general contain a greater percentage of big plays than the games themselves. Ditto the depiction of the general occurrences in life. What? You think the ten minutes of bank robbery footage out of an hour and a half of film represents the life's balance of a bank robber? I mean, sure, there are arty films that capture realism by way of experimental technique and a focus on the more mundane aspects of their subjects. And, sure, a wrestling nerd could probably create one wrestling fans would appreciate. But the audience numbers for the NCAAs would be a box office disaster for the movie's opening weekend.
I'm so glad someone finally did a video like this. He said exactly what I was thinking about Vision Quest. ". . . a lateral drop. . . and against the best guy in the state." Couldn't they have made it a little closer?
Jordan is old enough that I would think *"VISION QUEST"* should be almost holy to him. If you wrestled HQ from the 80s to 2000s, you can perfectly quote most of the movie and call the moves and transitions before they are made on the screen/mat
The last scene was 100% most realistic. If you were to be in that room you wouldn’t have thought it was a movie for sure cause every move was real and executed pretty well
My grade school coach took us to see Take Down (Lorenzo Lamas, Maureen McCormick, Stephen Furst, and Edward Hermann), whose dramatic ending includes and edge-of-your-seat "will he or won't he be able to lock his hands on the cradle and thereby no doubt get the pin?!"
My favorite scene from that movie was when the three coaches were in the corner. All three had very different attire on. From business suit to sweat pants. That right there is the epitome of high school wrestling coaching.
When Giamatti & Cannavale watch the vids from the Ohio State finals to confirm that the kid wrestled and find out he was 2 in state is classic and hilarious!
I remember channing tatum coming to work out at my highschool in the wrestling room and gym while filming foxcatcher, but everyone and their mother heard about it on facebook and ruined it for the wrestlers who were going to workout with him. They had our middle school wrestling coach in foxcatcher in a couple scenes, which we didn’t find out until we watched it… super noticeable too, since he’s a tiny little guy. Pretty awesome
there's nothing you can tell me that says AC Slater's wrestling footage isn't 100% authentic. Im pretty sure its pulled from California State competition footage. I mean the guy scored 7 touchdown in one game against Valley
He was nice to "Vision Quest". He could have picked that movie apart. Coach defaults the match because of a little nosebleed? Not a chance. You hear the ref award a takedown when Shute breaks down Swain from referee's position? Maybe that corrected a continuity issue due to an edit? Made no sense in the wrestling world. Just to name two things.
I agree and imagine the focus on a brief scene worked in the film's favor. Another example of what I think is a dramatic flaw is that, in the final moment of the final showdown, the drama plays out as if Swain needs to pin Shute to win, which is not the case since he had put himself up on points by the time he had him on his back.

I loved saved by the bell. I HATED those Wrestling scenes. And I don't know why I care. I even listen to JB and I'm like, "dude, chill out...of COURSE that shit ain't real." But if you put a screen in front of me while I'm watching this shit...I'm just bitching. Yelling at absolutely nobody! "WHY IS HE WRESTLING A 125 POUNDER IF HE'S A FUCKING HEAVYWEIGHT? OH...YEAH, SLATER JUST GETS TO STEP IN...DON'T NEED TO CHECK IN AT THE TABLE...NOPE! JUST SAY, "HEY, I GOT THIS." I've been told I take it a bit too seriously. There was a movie with a NJ State Champ(so from JBs neck of the woods) who was in a movie with a real famous actor(the guy from Succession I think...the States Attorney). The name eludes me, but that had good Wrestling.

Tom Cruise wrestled in HS in New Jersey. From what I heard, he would not have felt out of place on his back, but I couldn't say for sure.
Mario Lopez placed 7th in California state for Chula Vista in 1991 which is no joke.

His blast double leg is actually insane. Jordan can chop cedar trees down with his double leg takedowns.
Winwin with Paul Giamatti is one of the better movies with wrestling in it. Is guilty of a lot these issues too, but a good movie
My favorite scene from that movie was when the three coaches were in the corner. All three had very different attire on. From business suit to sweat pants.

What the hell happened to the movie reversal? That by far is the most accurate wrestling movie I’ve seen. Based out of Washington, PA.

The American Wrestler is great and based on a true story. The wrestling is good

Surprised there wasn’t anything from On The Mat
Jordan and I went to high school together. Not Jordan Burroughs, but a different Jordan.
y'all forgot to show him the wrestling movie reversal
Where's Dangal?
Reversal was one of the most realistic high-school wrestling movies of all time from cutting weight to women getting in your way.
They wore polos under their singlets... I have seen that but the hoodie helped cut more weight
I don't ever remember seeing that in real life in my 50+ years in the sport.
5:04 He really had to do ben askren like 😂😢
Nice to see John bones jones getting some work post ufc
If anyone watches this movie believe me you know this movie is amazing
Burroughs seems like a normal human when he is obviously an Alien.
"Didn't work for Ben Askren" 🤣🤣
I'm disappointed that Dengel didn't make the list
My brother just met him in fargo
Dangal is the best wrestling movie ever
JB is a wrestling legend and still going. 🇺🇸🥇🤼♂️
