I feel like physical media may not be as predominant for a good while, but the whole time it’ll slowly make a “hip” collectible comeback like vinyl records.
@@megamikethemovieman To a degree, I think so, just because of how aesthetic driven we humans can be. How big and relevant will it be, only time will tell.
@@harvesterofstorms4932 Makes sense. I always think there will be that collector market for it, since collectors like being able to hold something where with digital/streaming there is no ownership over the movies. Do you collect a lot of physical media yourself?
I do support physical media channels by a "like" and watching all the way through. I shed a tear when I visit Wal-Mart physical media aisle. I love movies and I wish they had more movies in their store. Yes, voting with our $ and supporting physical media channels will cause the boutique labels and studios to take notice.
Thank you for the support. I hope physical media can stay around for a long time. I do wish we had more store experiences with aisles of movies but that just seems to be on a constant decrease. Where do you receive most your media from currently: streaming, stores or online ordering?
@@mlowe7245 Ya I hope the stores keep physical media as long as possible since the hunt is always fun. Have you seen any movies out at the stores that have caught your attention recently?
Yeah I don't think physical media is becoming extinct. It's just becoming more of a niche market than ever before. We can't ever expect it to return to what it was before streaming came along. But 4K sales and releases are actually growing, and last year was the best year ever for the 4K format. So I think it just depends on how one looks at it. But I think there will always be collectors, just like with any other hobby. We're not going anywhere. As not only a movie collector but also a music collector (i.e. CDs), I largely stopped shopping at brick-and-mortar retail outlets probably a decade ago. I don't seem to have any problem finding what I want online. Places like Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart etc. have always been shit for physical media in their actual stores. They cater to the lowest common denominator, so selection is bound to be very limited compared to what you can get online. But I don't think most serious collectors completely depend on big box brick-and-mortar retail outlets to get what we want. We shop at boutiques and independent outlets online, as well as places like Amazon, Deep Discount, Best Buy online, etc. So the way I see it, physical media isn't going anywhere. It will just become more niche and expensive, and collectors will have to purchase online instead of in-person. But I agree, collectors are keeping physical media alive.
Great points that you brought up and I’m so glad us collectors have those online sources to go through. I agree, so much great 4Ks came out this year and can’t wait to see what we get this year. What are some of the titles you are most excited for so far? And I hope it doesn’t get too expensive for collectors. Some studios have been doing a great job keeping prices reasonable like those Lionsgate steelbooks. Do you think the boutique labels will ever be able to compete on a similar price level to studios while maintaining quality?
@@megamikethemovieman Well when we're talking about the expense to collectors, I do think inflation and soaring energy/fuel costs have definitely played a role. But aside from that, I don't think the boutiques are trying to soak their customers (in most cases). I think they probably operate under a pretty small profit margin, and their prices really do reflect an attempt to recoup some of the costs of putting out the releases. Boutiques often assume all the risk and costs when a major studio licenses a title out to them. We know that 4K retorations are very expensive to execute, and I think a lot of these boutiques have their own in-house people doing the restorations. They're not going to have the same kind of resources and staffing that a big studio like Lionsgate or Paramount would have, so it likely really is more expensive for them to produce these releases. Not to mention, the cost of paying an artist to create new artwork, the cost of the high-end packaging (like Vinegar Syndrome's patented magnetic clasp box with their VSUs -- i.e. Road House), etc. So I wouldn't expect the prices to come down much for the boutiques (aside from occasional sales). I think the way they remain competitive is by continuing to release unique titles that the big studios aren't willing to take a chance on. And they deliver top-notch restorations and packaging to boot. But I do think that, most of the time, the prices reflect what they need to do to be able to stay in business and continue offering us titles that no one else has. The appeal is that they put so much care and love into the work they do, and that's what we're paying for. That said, I do think Shout/Scream Factory needs to step up their game a bit if they're going to continue charging what they are for their products. Their restorations are good, but their packaging is pretty weak compared to a Vinegar Syndrome or Arrow. I also think Severin Films overcharges quite a bit (they're even more expensive than VS).
@@TheOriginalFuzz Makes sense, I agree. Quality and unique titles are some selling points of the boutique labels. Scream Factory can definitely do better with packaging, even if they just improved the discs holders so discs don’t fall out would be a big improvement. Hopefully the competition between all the boutique labels cause them all to improve even more. What has been your favorite boutique label to collect for?
Physical media isn't going away. Streaming services are a massive loss for studios. Not only that, but people will be wanting to keep their favourite films on Physical media, and more and more people are suspicious of streaming, as they have no true possession of films and series on streaming. People have had series disappear while they were in the middle of an episode. Give it time, and attitudes will shift. Especially when you consider the revenue you can gain from physical releases.
Do you think then there will be an increase in more people going back to collecting physical media, that way they keep what they like from disappearing?
@@megamikethemovieman Here is what I know. In the UK, we have this chain of stores called CEX. And they sell second hand items in there, like computers, games, and DVD/Blu-Ray. These stores do very well, and there is constant turn around in stock. People buy DVDs and Blu-Rays, watch them, pile them up, then trade in. So it is a little like flexible rental, in a sense. DVD still is vastly larger than Blu-Ray, though. People see it as "normal," and will only get into them when they replace their old DVD player when it breaks, and such forth. So the adoption to Blu-Ray is that much slower as a result. Also, you have HMV, a chain of stores that still sells physical media. They also have some pop culture stuff as well, connected with films and television. They really struggled about 2010 or so, but held on, and are doing well. And they stock things like Arrow and 88 Films releases as well, in dedicated sections for those specialist names. They also are back to selling in a big way vinyl, which is what HMV was selling originally, when they first started in 1921. If this is of help to you.
@@horseradishpower9947 Those sound like some awesome stores. I will have to check those out if I visit the UK again. Seems to be still some great options for collecting physical media which is awesome for us collectors. What boutique labels do you think you will collect most for this year? Will it be Arrow since they have such great UK releases? I’m still hoping that Robin Hood set comes out State side.
@@megamikethemovieman I honestly don't know what I will get. One thing I am doing, is trying to get as much of the DVDs I have replaced with Blu-Ray, and trying to have steelbooks where possible, because shelves of them just looks good. Also, I don't have a clue as to what upcoming releases are, and who is exactly out there. I know of Arrow Films and 88 Films, because I have at least one of their things on my shelf. Also, I am wanting things that are going to be unusual, like Hatching and The Feast. These I saw back in October at my local cinema, which is a Picturehouse. This is a chain of 26 cinemas in the UK, and they work on showing a range of films that are more obscure, and also older films as well. Meaning I had the joy of watching films like Die Hard and Clockwork Orange for the first time at the cinema, and not at home. So I do feel a little spoiled in that regard, because I have that nearby. Hope this is a helpful answer, I have to dash off and start work.
I’m so glad we live in the online era since that is where I get most of my physical media from. Do you think online will always be able to keep physical media collecting alive or do you think that will get scaled down too?
Great video Mike! Don't forget that we should be getting a Barnes and Noble in 2023...looking forward to some hunts there. I agree though, we will lose the in-store selection for places like Best Buy, Walmart, and Target but the online presence will still be there.
Yes, we must do some hunts together when they open. Especially for the Criterion sale! Is it for sure a Barnes and Noble that will carry movies though since I know not all of them do?
Bad news: I’m not sure how many person just buying DVDs all at once and it is sold out what did I do? Do not tell me there’s an actual streaming service on DVDs and Blu-ray converter
The only bad thing about online only is you pay a lot more. For example, to get Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure in 4K, I think it was between $30 and $40. And it’s bare bones. You get no Blu-ray or digital copy. Just a 4K movie and that’s it. You can’t really risk waiting for a sale either. Because sometimes these places put these out, and then when you go back later, the site says “out of print” or “no longer available.”
The online and looking for deals is definitely a risky game. I personally say if you love the movie/edition go for the preorder but if it’s one you’re in between on or it’s a complete blind buy I don’t mind waiting for a deal. What do you think of that strategy?
@@megamikethemovieman that’s exactly what I do 😃 Or if I own it on Blu-ray already, I debate if a 4K upgrade is really really worth it or not. There’s a few movies I’ve bought in every form of media from VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K. Magnificent seven, Field of dreams, and I saw Rebel without a cause is getting a 4K release in a few months that I’m excited about. 👍🏻
Streaming is definitely killing physical media. I can't remember the last time I saw a commercial promoting a physical media release of a modern film. What seems to happen nowadays is a film completes its theatrical run and goes straight to the nearest streaming platform. The promotion for the streaming release has replaced promotion for the physical media release. I would not be surprised if DVD and blu-ray sales are down forcing stores to keep less of them in stock. The day is coming when physical media will completely disappear from the shelves of major retailers. Online order services like Ebay and Amazon will be the only option.
I do not think physical media will completely go away. People are already getting tired of streaming in some ways & creators are getting upset at the fact that several of their movies & TV shows are being censored or altered on streaming. And there are people that can't afford streaming with the high prices & there's no guarantee that the shows & movies that you watch will stay on the streaming services that you subscribe to. They can be removed at any time either due to license fee disputes or the rights expiring. Streaming shouldn't be the only way to enjoy media. There should be a way for physical media & streaming to co-exist. What will the legacy of movies & tv shows be if they will only be released on streaming & nowhere else? And who knows where streaming itself will be in the next 10, 15, 20 years? Streaming could become a thing of the past by then.
Amazon and online stores are the biggest stores for disc's Disney won't release any of the marvel shows on disc's Amazon has released the boys on Blu ray

@megamikethemovieman I usually buy the new movies but alot of the newer movies Thor love and thunder and wakanda forever I skipped because I had such a let down with them but I am getting ant man and many of the major movies bit the marvels
Idk. It seems to me that more and more 4ks are coming out. I think studios have figured out that they can have 3rd party make the 4k transfers and the studios get a big bite of the profit. Why get rid of it if they can get paid for both streaming and physical media. But i could be wrong. If the studios are making the 4k transfers themselves then i can see why they might get rid of it.
Whenever I come back to making videos, you’ve inspired me to make a video talking about this. It’s something I feel as if we all need to be talking about.
This is definitely going to be a hot take on this channel, but now that I have a 4k Roku, I have been thinking streaming is better for me. Every time I watch a DVD it is always so noticeable how much lower the quality is from the 4k streaming. I can't really afford to buy every movie on Blu Ray. Adding that to the fact that Prime Video can let you rent almost any movie for a few dollars, I think that streaming is the future. I do like physical media, I just can't sustain such a hobby. I would rather spend that money on another streaming service, and I would have so much more content to choose from with high quality. I do like to get my favorite movies on Blu Ray though, definitely had to buy The Batman. That being said, I definitely think that physical media shouldn't die out. There are lots of collectors and people who buy them. And some people just like having the physical version. And I love physical media channels!
I get it, absolutely lots of pros to streaming and sometimes that is the best option for a lot of people out there. I stream some stuff myself. I do believe the best of physical media is still better quality wise when compared to the best of streaming, but that gap is shrinking every year. Do you ever think physical media will completely disappear and when do you think that might happen?
@@megamikethemovieman It is definitely possible to happen, I would say it would have to be a while though. It would take a long time to happen but its probably inevitable

Hello, my dad owns one of the last independent video rental stores in Minneapolis, MN. Would you be interested in purchasing a large lot of films to grow your collection? Video Universe’s collection consists of an estimated 45,000 DVDs and 20,000 VHS tapes. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to browse the history of home video from the 1980s onward, all under one roof. Many of the films available for purchase are out of print, and you cannot find them on streaming platforms. Please let me know if you're interested.
I think physical media will decline in popularity slightly, but I don't think it'll ever die. I prefer streaming rather than physical, only because I can't afford a 4k player, and many 4k upgrades, but I can watch any movie on 4k streaming. Sadly netflix has a "premium" subscription that I can't afford either, which is $5 more a month to watch in 4k. Maybe it'd be worth it if Netflix was the only streaming service I use, but I watch Amazon Prime, and HBO more.
I hope my favorite movies will continue coming out on physical media. Costco is almost non existent on physical media. When it rains or is windy TV doesn’t work however, physical media will work.
Target and Walmart. If I really want something, my son will pre order it on line for me. Some things I want can’t get on line. I still want Live Grinch the musical.

The average consumer ALWAYS goes for the convenient option. They used to buy physical media because it was their only option. Now that they don't have to leave the couch and clutter their house, that's what they are going to choose. Even when they were buying DVDs, they weren't building shelves and showing off their collections. They were stacked in a closet or in drawers. They were never collectors. @@kimba8387 Thank you for sharing that info with me, I always enjoy learning something new, so much appreciated. Do you find yourself watching more shows over movies?
Part of the problem is that the various streaming services are hoovering up the new release movies or series and are taking a lot longer to come to dvd if they do at all. Then again a lot of the newer release movies and shows are utter crap anyway. I mean what kind of market is there for She Hulk or Willow on dvd? If they never get a dvd release then it's no loss. I have been filling the gaps in my dvd collection via Amazon and eBay. Mainly used but good condition and generally quite cheap. I found a set of all 14 Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies for £9.00 on eBay. The real threat to physical media will be reduced availability of players, not the discs.
That makes sense. When they stop making the players will be the real big issue. When do you think that might happen? And do you collect mostly DVDs then over Blu-ray’s or 4Ks?
As a distribution medium? Yes. As a storage medium at home? No. But physical media will make a comeback as a distribution method, because there are physical constraints to available bandwidth that will become the physical wall 4k video downloads and beyond with crash against. What we will eventually see is a permanent shift in physical storage media. After all, the current maximum bluray capacity of 128 GB doesn't even hold a candle compared to SDXC flash cards, which reached twice the blueray capacity in 2016. Physical media won't die because you need somewhere to keep things at home.

The whole shopping experience has changed. Less footfall so less of a retail floor plate is needed. Some clothing stores in the UK are basically becoming a pickup and return hub and the main movie retailer in the UK, HMV, has become more of a collectibles and vinyl shop. I think there still is a strong market both for collectors but people who don't want films to come and then go from streaming services and also watch them in the best possible domestic product which is 4K Blu Ray.

Buy physical media whilst you can, having lived through all the different formats since the 70's history tells me that no format lasts forever. And availability of a previous format can disappear from the shelves very quickly. I used to a have massive collection of VHS, then laserdisc which i kept the best titles of, then DVD and now Blu Ray/4k. At least i can compare the various formats until my players stop working. Here in the UK, you have to use mailorder if you want the latest titles, they are no longer stocked by high street stores, my only local store is a very much smaller HMV with a poor selection of older shelfworn titles that i refuse to buy. How much longer will Blu Ray and 4K titles will continue to be available will be down to demand. The cost of remastering older films into 4K means that they will become too expensive to buy, and then they will stop making them. If you want to see a realy bad 4K transfer, try a copy of "Trains Plains and Automobiles" the skin texture in some scenes are very poor, my laserdisc looks better and so does a standrad Blu Ray, the 4K one is the worst transfer i have seen.. The future of physical media looks very uncertain.
@@megamikethemovieman If they can find a way of squeezing 8K onto a disc that is at it's limit with 4K then we might see 8K on a disc. I've accepted that physical media is a niche market and will never be as widespread as it was 15 years ago, but I do think we are turning a corner with studios realizing they need to carter to the niche audience. Studios are slowly starting to realize that streaming is more an additional source of revenue instead of being the big, paradigm shifting new way to distribute everything they were banking on it being. I'm already seeing studios increasing their releasing of physical releases over licensing them to third parties the past few months.

I tend to consider myself a movie fan, so my focus is all over the place. My collection is a Mish mash of genres from superheroes to horror to drama to anime/animation, action, martial arts, comedy, and more. I just like good movies, subjective to my tastes of course. I've ordered a lot from Vinegar Syndrome lately, and yes, that Roadhouse 4K is awesome , but have enjoyed Arrow, Kino Lorber, Shout, and just got my first 88 films release and was impressed by the release.

I've been expanding my collection the past few years. I hate current Hollywood so I'm collecting old content. A lot of older obscure content is not found on streaming. Also, with outrage culture destroying everything, there's the fear of older content being edited for the easily offended. Hopefully it will be like vinyl and have a comeback.
I definitely think there will always be a collector market for the physical media. I know you said you are collecting older content, what kinds of genres and from what decades?
Surprisingly enough even 2nd hand thrift stores around me have downsized the media section, yet the book section has doubled 🤔 I love going on the hunts but in recent years I find myself buying through Ebay/Hamilton 50% of the time and thrift/pawn stores the other. There are media specific place like Vintage stock that have nearly endless amounts of physical media cause that's what they specialize in but those places are far in few between.
Vintage Stock sounds awesome, I don’t think I have any stores around that like me. I wonder why thrift stores are downsizing? I would think they would get all the physical media people get rid of. Where do you think that physical media is going?
@@megamikethemovieman it's all about profits to these thrift stores, they dont specialize I anything specific but when it comes to media book outsell the movies and when movies sit there for weeks and dont sell they recycle what's old. That's going to be a major issue as the years go on, I don't expect the CEO of these thrift stores to understand the dynamics of the physical media industry but if they keep recycling movies on mass eventually maybe in 50 years well see less to buy and collectors will hold the capitol on physical media cause eventually the numbers will catch up. In the future people that want physical media will be paying an arm and a leg for a movie that was a dollar on the resale market because 50 years ago business owners just throw out what they think won't sell.

Getting rid of physical media will kill the movie and handing industry
Do you think physical media will last forever then?

Great point on the commercials, I can’t remember seeing physical media advertisements like that in awhile. Where do you mostly go to consume media?

Every time I watch a DVD it is always so noticeable how much lower the quality is from the 4k streaming. I can't really afford to buy every movie on Blu Ray.
Great points! Do you collect a lot of physical media yourself?
most of us older media collectors are ether getting too old or dying off and the younger would be collectors just don't want to be bothered
I could see that as a possibility. So you think it’s the older generation that is keeping physical media going the most?

The whole shopping experience has changed. Less footfall so less of a retail floor plate is needed. Some clothing stores in the UK are basically becoming a pickup and return hub and the main movie retailer in the UK, HMV, has become more of a collectibles and vinyl shop. I think there still is a strong market both for collectors but people who don't want films to come and then go from streaming services and also watch them in the best possible domestic product which is 4K Blu Ray.

This hobby will become extremely exclusive and expensive. 4K sales are growing
Do you collect a lot of 4Ks yourself?
@@megamikethemovieman yes, I collect mostly 4k now with blu ray as well. The prices have only been going up over the years at retail, and the level of interest from the masses has declined. It’s still going to be a huge market just for a select few. Same thing with availability, you never had to worry about pre ordering a 4K unless it was super exclusive 5+ years back when it first came out. Now you wonder if it will sell out and be sold for double the next day on eBay. Same thing with value. That’s the main plus I think over all other benefits. Some titles will just continue to go up and up in value. Making collecting that much more exclusive. I’m happy I’ve held on to all of my titles. Just to give you an example. I bought Lawrence of Arabia on 4K steelbook a year ago. Never opened it and watched it, I looked on eBay two colts available in the U.S asking no less than $225.00 to $250.00! Buy physical media whilst you can, having lived through all the different formats since the 70's
history tells me that no format lasts forever.
And availability of a previous format can disappear from the shelves very quickly.
I used to a have massive collection of VHS, then laserdisc which i kept the best titles of,
then DVD and now Blu Ray/4k.
At least i can compare the various formats until my players stop working.
Here in the UK, you have to use mailorder if you want the latest titles, they are no longer
stocked by high street stores, my only local store is a very much smaller HMV with a poor
selection of older shelfworn titles that i refuse to buy.
How much longer will Blu Ray and 4K titles will continue to be available will be down to demand.
The cost of remastering older films into 4K means that they will become too expensive
to buy, and then they will stop making them.
If you want to see a realy bad 4K transfer, try a copy of "Trains Plains and Automobiles"
the skin texture in some scenes are very poor, my laserdisc looks better and so does a standrad
Blu Ray, the 4K one is the worst transfer i have seen..
The future of physical media looks very uncertain.
So you don’t think 4K will be the last format? I wonder what they will do next. Do you think there will be an 8K format?
@@megamikethemovieman If they can find a way of squeezing 8K onto a disc that is at it's limit with 4K
then we might see 8K on a disc.
The problem will be the cost of the discs and players, the harsh reality is that DVD's still outsell Blu Rays,
4K is mainly bought by AV enthusiasts that appreciate the better quality, but the cost stops it from ever
becoming a mass market product.
Only time will tell if they develop an 8K physical format.

Not in 2023 it won't. Maybe the amount of titles in stores will keep decreasing to just a rack or 2. But the on-line and boutique labels sales are flourishing. My local Walmart has only 2 racks of movies and 3 bins of $5 movies and out of one rack they took space to put Funko Pops and Vinyls records! In a few minutes anyone can scan all of the movies were a couple of years ago it would take a half hour or 40 minutes. I don't have streaming services I prefer physical media.
