The Ppc 2.8 catches even small amounts of pressure. Have you seen the guys starting downwinder boards without a wing or paddle just by bouncing them? If you add a touch of wind to that and a wing you’re away, especially with some swell
Nice, just ordered the 1180 to start Paddle DW, I'm winging them ok on smaller volume wings but wanted something a bit bigger for the paddle and low wind.... Nice vid..
@@roymassey1364 advanced+ fuse is not shorter, it means the fuse attachment point to the mast is closer to the front foil by 6cm for the advance+. If on the old non advanced fuse I believe the front foil has a longer lever arm between it and the attachment to the mast. Think of a wrench/spanner and trying to remove a stuck bolt, a short 20cm wrench vs a longer 50cm wrench. It leverages the power. With the advanced+ fuse your inputs feel amplified and you won’t be pushed around as much by the foil
Hi, I use the 80cm axis pro ultra high modulus. It’s the only mast I use for Downwinding surfing or winging, well for everything. I have a 90cm original military mast which cost a fortune but no longer use it as that extra 10cm in length gives me a disconnected feel, like I’m ridding on stilts. I was then ridding the mast before the 80cm pro came out. Actually I do use shorter when surfing shallow reef, but my experience is that shorter always feels better, as in connected to the foil… the down side of the 75 or 68 which I on reef is the bigger boards dimensions stop fitting in and around the wave. Chop wise, once committed to a certain length I find my ridding changes to suit, with the shorter mast you learn to pick better lines through the chop, I surf the chop now, and any chop too big is now a wave. Hope this helps
The 2.8 is the biggest wing I use, even for winging. I use it from around 9knots… I won’t bother with less wind than that but below that is where the other wings would have to come in. But then you cant pump ‘em because they’re too big.
@@downwind_drifter I seem to need to improve my technique, I find I cannot make much upwind progress with such light wind (say 10-11knots) and small hand wing. Do you have any suggestions? This is on ART 1201 or ART999 foils and generally a 4m wing.
@@JoshWiden it is more difficult and I know what you’re talking about. Having the right foil helps something efficient and big like the 1401 for me helps. The rear foil plays a big part too in reducing drag, the skinnies have helped. Technique wise, keeping a high speed is beneficial and ridding well tuned” you don’t want to be nose high, ridding stalled, overweighting the board. You can experiment with different foot pressures for certain conditions, eg do you possibly want the rear foot or front foot holding the pressure as you push up wind, and is that foot in the optimal place doing the optimal job… lots of micro beta here to be played with, the racing guys probably have it worked out. Using the ocean terrain to your advantage, there would be a lot to go in to here.. but surfing your way upwind helps using wave energies to your advantage. And ridding the foil high Best of luck
40L aztron future dry bag. It’s not a particularly great bag but it’s good enough, I think I could probably squeeze a 4m wing into the 40L bag. The dry bags tend to be narrow which make packing the wing frustrating, you’d do well to try find a wider looking bag if you could. This one does have a zip compartment on the inside which I put my phone in insides it’s own little dry bag for extra waterproofing.
Love your vids so much thank you 🙏
🤙🤩🤙
Thank you
Awesome run. Getting me inspired to start my DW journey this summer. Subscribed
Do it, and don’t give up. I’m happy to help if I can.
Also mind blown by the 2.8m wing!

Awesome, keep me updated with your progress and feel free to ask questions.
Thanks will do..
I tried the 1401 but it was waaay too much wing, got up so easy but I couldn’t turn it!!
@@dwninetynine interesting, was it an advanced plus fuse? The advanced plus really lets you take control of the bigger foils.
Interesting how does the advance fuse give you more control I thought the longer fus would give you more control?

What size mast are you on? Do you use different sizes depending on the conditions? The higher chop the higher your mast ?

Awesome vid! Looks really light for the 2.8 sail. I take it DW board and big foil help a lot?

How many liters is your drybag and what model is it? Any suggestions on wing size vs drybag size?

Curious, would you recommend the 1180 as a light wind foil, im 87kg and in Auckland and have a SF 960
The 1180 is a great all around foil for light conditions. 1401 is more efficient but less fun when things pick up just a touch.
